Everytime I go near NOVA/springfield I head this way, I love the food. The lamb palau is fantastic. There is so much and they give you either a salad or soup complimentary. It's also very inexpensive I feel for the level of food they give. I haven't had afghan food anywhere else that could compare. It doesn't look all that at all and its in a crap location but awesome! After a night of house hunting after work, I was exhausted and hungry. From my experience, there are not a plethora of food options in Springfield compared to other parts of Northern Virginia, but perhaps that is a bit unfair as Springfield is not as urban. Anyhow, I digress. I searched for the nearest restaurant, which happened to be Afghan Kabob. I went on a Wednesday night around 8 pm, and there were only a few other people in the restaurant. From the outside the restaurant was dimly lit, and on the inside the decor was a bit outdated. However, I was immediately met by friendly servers who were very helpful with explaining what to choose on the menu. As a starter, my husband and I were offered either soup or salad. I ordered the salad, and he ordered the soup that way I could try both. The soup was composed of a tomato base, and consisted of assorted vegetables, and spaghetti noodles. It had just the right amount of salt, and was very tasty. The salad was good as well, however, the soup was better. For the main courses, we ordered the Vegetarian Rice dish, which was composed of sautéed pumpkin, fried spinach, and eggplant, and the Peshwari Chaplee kabob, which sort of looked like a ground lamb patty consisting of onions, green pepper, and various seasonings. The 2 pieces of nan served were huge, and were piping hot and fresh. We enjoyed everything, and could not finish our meals as the portion sizes were large. I ended up taking the rest of the Vegetarian Rice dish and nan to work for lunch the following day. I think I would have given this place 4 stars if the upholstery and decor were updated. read more

Really good Afghan food. The kabob's are excellent (the boneless chicken thighs are sinful, just full of flavor) and the sauces are really tasty and the nan is served hot right from the oven. The Boolawnee appetizer (pastry stuffed with potato and scallion) is unique and flavorful. They will also customize a dish as much as possible to meet your taste/requirements. Since we are not fans of lamb, we order the Qaubili Palau (lamb, seasoned rice topped with fried carrot slices and raisins) with chunks of chicken instead of the lamb. This place is seriously the freakin bomb! I love it and I love taking friends here. Order a plate of Mantu and you're set. The Kadu, Afghan Carayee, and Superdish are other favorites of mine. The service here is great. From the outside and surrounding plaza, you wouldn't think that there'd be a white tablecloth restaurant inside; it absolutely deserves white tablecloth status (though you don't have to be dressy necessariy)! We used to be regular customers of this restaurant since about 15 years. It used to be very good. Good service, good food. The owners were very friendly. But the quality has been degraded since it was sold to the new owners. Customer service is bad now. Food consistency is not good. Sometimes it will be good and sometimes it will be bad. Now we don't go there a lot because of the problems, specially the customer service is really bad now with the new owners. So the real problems are two things, food consistency and customer service. If you there and your food was good, you will be really happy. But since we used to go there a lot therefore we had mixed experience after the new owners. Now we don't there too much. read more

The food is great and the prices are very reasonable. Any of the kabobs, the fresh baked bread, all of the vegetarian dishes and desserts are wonderful. Service can be a little slow at times but they will pick up the pace if you ask. I believe this is more of a cultural thing. We tend to want to rush through our meals versus relax and enjoy. I have found that many of the restaurants with the best food and value in the D.C. area are small family owned businesses located in older small shopping centers as is Afghan Kabob. I discovred this place about 3 and half months ago and have been eating there about once a week. Although I have not used them they also offer some great coupons for discounts. read more

Fantastic food, yet a little pricey compared to other ethnic restaurant in Northern VA.

I order the bone in chicken kabob and the shami kabob on a regular basis. The shami is seasoned so well. The way they prepare the chicken leaves it very moist and tender. The portions are pretty sizable, so come prepared to eat. read more

Wasn't sure about this place due to the mixed reviews. Interior is very nice and seems to be recently renovated. We went for the lunch buffet. For $9 you can't beat it! Two types of rice, amazing okra dish, really good spinach dish, chicken curry and chicken kabob were both very good, fresh nan, and the chick peas were ok. Didn't try the salad ( iceberg and tomatoes). I'm not a kabob or Afghan aficionado, but I consider myself to be a foodie. This was really good food in a really nice setting! Afghan Kabob doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that stop you! The interior is clean and beautifully decorated, and the staff is very friendly. I went with two co-workers for lunch and we all had the lunch special. We chose what kind of meat we wanted for our kabobs - I picked chicken - and our waiter took care of the rest. I'm not familiar with Afghan food so I liked that I didn't have to choose everything but could still try a variety of dishes. However, the full menu was also available in case you want something in particular. Our meal started with a delicious herbed noodle soup, then kabobs served with seasoned rice. We were brought chickpeas and eggplant as sides, along with naan and a dipping sauce. My chicken kabobs were tender and tasted great, and I enjoyed the sides and naan. Our meal ended with a hot cup of tea. The entire bill for three people was about $25 - a really good deal, especially considering the amount of food. Played it safe and ordered the chicken breast kabobs. This was my first visit but friends with me had been there. The sauces and bread with the kabobs were really good. The food here is good, but the customer service is seriously messed up. The first time I ate there, no issues. The second time, we arrived about 15 minutes after they opened and it took them an hour to bring our food out. The third time, we ordered carry out, and we didn't get our food until an hour and a half after they told us to come pick it up. I waited in the lobby for AN HOUR AND A HALF. I just tried calling them to order carry out again (because I'm a glutton for punishment, clearly) and the guy who answered the phone told me that he couldn't take my order right now, told me to call back, and hung up on me. I was so pleased with my latest meal here I decided to write a review. I eat here at least once a month, but could easily eat it every day! We always get the Bouranee Baunjaun eggplant appetizer and go back and forth between the boneless chicken thigh Kabob and the lamb. I am sure the other dishes are good but these are just so delicious. The rice is fragrant, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The meats are succulent and flavorful , and the bread and dipping sauces are as good as I have had. To my taste, this is the best Afghan food in the area. Courteous staff. The first time we ate at Afghan Kabob Restaurant, the food was so good that I took my lady back there on the night I proposed to her. I've been here multiple times, but I have only tried the chicken kabobs (thigh and breast). Both have been tasty, but not quite as spicy as other Afghan-style Kabob places that I have been to. This restaurant definitely serves one of the best afghan foods in the DMV area. I've been here a few times and have also tried out a numerous amount of other afghan restaurants. The place is nicely decorated and has a few big, beautiful paintings of Afghanistan. The waiter always starts us out with a complimentary bowl of soup or salad for each person. I usually order their boolawnee as an appetizer and boneless chicken breasts with their qaubili palau. I love the white and green sauce that comes with the kabob, the sauces add more of a pleasant taste to the food.
