My wife ordered via food delivery service which offered a nice BOGO free offer on select items. I chose the Shami which is broiled ground beef and came with rice, chickpeas, and salad. I thought it was ok but didn't overwhelm me with flavor or wow factor to give it a higher rating. My son ordered Shami as well, felt the same, and is somewhat of a rice snob to where he didn't eat much of his rice. The naan was plentiful in quantity but not taste as it was simply bread. I also ordered the baklava as I typically do at restaurants who make it given time spent in the middle east, and hoping to find something comparable. The baklava here was small for the price, overly sweet, and seemingly saturated instead of flaky. BLUF: Delicious food but some service and cleanliness issues My family used to go hear a lot before covid. It's the first time I've been back since covid began. They renovated the place and it's not as run down as it once was, although it's still pretty dark inside. I went with a group of five other people for dinner. First, the food. Everyone was very pleased with their food. We are also given a nice basket of naan bread and a salad for the table to share. Overall everyone's comment on their food range from very good to delicious. What are the downsides? Well, they have an earn of hot tea available for anyone to get some while they're waiting for their meal. The tea is actually very tasty. Which all sounds good right? The problem is out of the six of us two of us picked up cups that were there for us to use and found lipstick stains on them. Clearly they hadn't been cleaned. Kind of off-putting The other aspect was the service. Two of us had to ask for water glasses because they weren't on the table even though the table was supposedly set for six. Also service was slow, and the food came out for one person then I'll wait, then I'll wait for the next person and so on. Having said all of that I think they only had one server working that evening. Randomly stopped by and was pleasantly surprised. This place is spacious and very clean. The server was super friendly. But, on to the most important thing, the food. The deluxe kebab was amazing. Four pieces of chicken, four lamb and one beef kebab. The beef was very creamy. The chicken was moist. The lamb was rich with flavor. We moved to the area recently and found this gem. I've heard great things about this place prior but never had a chance to come out here! I ordered the lamb kabob. Delicious. Go get you some food from here because they live up to the hype! When we arrived for lunch, we were the only ones there for a good 10 mini before another family came in. This was a Saturday at noon so I don't think you need to worry about seating. They also seemed to have a busy catering business which is a good sign. Do I like this restaurant? Yes. Yet I used to love it. First off I think this is a first date friendly type of place. It looks more elaborate than say nearby Flame Kabob, and a number of other competitors. Very nice and polite staff here. I'd like to compliment them on this. I got ground chicken, the lamb pieces were grainy and ground beef was like jerky. I gave two stars for the tasty rice, side salad and chick peas. This place is amazing! Some of the best food I have ever had. We took 22 people there this past weekend for a celebration and everyone universally said the food was amazing. The service was great; you could tell the servers took pride in their food. The atmosphere is the only thing that could use a little work, but it is more than made up for by the food and service. The savory aroma and cozy decor made us feel very comfortable. The menu has all the traditional Afghan dishes plus a number of vegan and vegetarian options. I went here with a group friends back in March. I actually been coming here with my parents for a number of years, however this was my first time back in awhile and they had done some major redesign to the overall restaurant which looks very nice. I have also heard they are continuing to redesign the place as there is decorative lights that have been added. I should emphasize that these photos were taken in March of 2023 so the new additions of light are not included yet. First time customer here, and I ordered on the phone for takeout. Order was ready for pickup in 30 minutes. Items in takeout bags were accurate with disposable utensil packets. I was not impressed with the flavors of some of the kabobs that we ordered. Chicken and lamb meats were a little dry and not very tasty. Shami was good. Meat and rice portions were smaller than expected and presentation in a takeout box was not impressive (but, hey, it's takeout box). We found all the chicken, lamb, and shami kebab to be nice, though I found the neon orange of the chicken to give me some worry before taking a bite. Over the year I have grown an increasing respect for this restaurant. In an area where kabobs are common AK has always offered a quality product for a cheap price. Often I find myself comparing other kabobs to the ones I get here. Can you find better? Debatable. Can you find cheaper? Probably. But can you find this variety and quality somewhere else? Unlikely. The lunch special is a great deal. The chickpeas and spinach and both excellent sides and for $10 it is very affordable. I ordered the Aushak and it taste like it was microwaved out of the freezer, It was still cold. The rice we were served wasn't cooked yet still hard. I debated back and forth on giving this place 3 or 4 Stars. My favorite part was the incredible taste of the marinated and grilled lamb. The meals had disproportionate sizes. The Nan bread my grilled lamb was served on was a large portion with a tiny portion of grilled lamb. This to me made the price disproportionate as well. The bread wasn't as fresh as I would have normally liked. I really enjoyed the salad and dressing. The restaurant itself is fun to dine in. There is a large diorama of Afghanistan and a beautiful handwoven map on the wall. The service was fairly prompt - we were the only ones in the restaurant, we arrived when they opened. When i first walked in i saw the place was empty but it was because i came around 4 o'clock. it was very clean and tidy and my server was extremely prompt being that i was the only person there. each of their dishes excluding appetizers come with your choice of a soup or salad (highly recommend the soup). For the entree, i ordered Peshawri Chaplee Kabob which is Ground beef and chicken mixed with onions, potatoes, green peppers, and their house blend of seasonings. the meat was juicy but couldn't help but feel it should have been more fresh, juicy, and slightly bigger size wise. the service was phenomenal but i would not know if its consistent with more people. i will be back again to try out other items on their menu to get a better idea if some of the food is better than the others. read more
