We called this place 1 week before NYE and they told us we had the reservation booked for 8pm and it was confirmed. Out of curtousy, we called 1 hour ahead of time on NYE to confirm and they told us they didn't have the reservation. The man on the phone told us they had a party of 60 people and were not taking more people. We told him we had a previous reservation from 1 week prior. Leaves me a bit upset to be writing this review but our experience last night was beyond shocking and disappointing. We left the gym across the street around 9 and were starving, we decided to walk into afghan kabob for some healthy protein instead of heading home to cook dinner. As we parked the car and were walking in, I noticed someone was standing by the window looking out, I found this to be a little odd but we proceeded to enter. As soon as we entered, a gentleman approached us and asked if we were carrying out, which we replied no. We then asked to be seated and he once again asked if we would carry out which at this point, we looked at each other confused and said no, we would like to dine in. He looked at us tired and said that he would be back. He came back shortly and stated that they were getting ready to close in 25 min (it was 9:10 p.m.) and it's too late for them to seat us, and again asked if we would like to carry out. Please try to imagine my shock at this point. We quietly thanked them and walked out. We have dined at Afghan Kabob for years and have never been turned away. They claim that they close at 10 p.m. and we walk in at 9:05 and get turned away at 9:10 when that particular evening they claimed to close at 9:30 p.m. Honestly, we would've probably finished out meal quickly and well before 10 p.m. I am still in shock that I got turned away from a restaurant. I doubt we'll be going back here any time soon and most definitely won't be sending any of our friends or family. I hope management takes the time to read this review and train their employees to better treat their customers. read more

This is a very good Afghan restaurant in Springfield. It is located in an awkward place behind the Sunoco off of Rolling Road. You wouldn't think that a nice restaurant like this would be located there, tucked away but don't be fooled. Last time I went there I got the Super Dish- Chalau (white rice) & qaubili palau (brown rice) with carrots and raisins served with meat sauce (qurma) and one skewer of each shami, chicken, and lamb kabob. This is a lot of food. The meal also came with a salad. The salad was fresh, but nothing special about it. Even though I'm not the biggest raisin fan, I quite enjoy their qaubili palau with the qurma. The kabobs were all very good. They were juicy, not over cooked. My favorite was the lamb kabob, not too chewy or dry. Overall it was a very good meal. The service is probably the only thing that could improve. The waiter was for the most part attentive, but there were a couple of times when I needed a refill on water and had to wait a decent amount of time before he came and refilled my glass. This would not have been a problem if there were a ton of customers at the restaurant. However there was only one more family besides us there. Afghan Kabob is a good place for a meal if you are in the West Springfield area. read more

I've heard only great things about this place so I decided to drop in with my brother. Sadly they were out of the spinach side dish and stewed lamb palau that my brother initially ordered but they swapped that out for lamb kabob, per my brother's request and without hesitation. I started my meal with the vegetable soup then followed up with ground beef kabobs with a side of chickpeas. The vegetable soup tasted like a typical vegetable soup but with added chickpeas and spices and overcooked fettuccine noodles, I could pass on that next time but it was included in the price so meh.. The portion of the chickpeas was enough to feed me for dinner and lunch the next day - obviously I was happy with that. The kabob was pretty tasty and honestly it rivals that of my favorite kabob establishment--Kabob Palace in Arlington. I was also lucky enough to try the salad and rice from what my brother ordered. The salad was pretty small and dressed with something similar to ranch and the rice was really good with a strong but not overpowering flavor of cinnamon. My allegiance stays with Kabob Palace in Arlington (the 24 hour one that's totally stickerbombed) but for the location, Afghan Kabob lives up to the word of mouth. Hopefully the next time I'm craving Afghan food, the spinach will be on the menu. read more

I really like how their staff wear traditional clothing and the model of an Afghan village near the entrance never fails to entertain me (the cows are bigger then the villagers?!) Beware!!!! However, sometimes it's better not to read all the good reviews cuz then your expectations can get pretty high. This was one of those times. Although I gave it 4 stars, it's really closer to 3.5, and to be perfectly honest, I would say the food was only 3 stars. My buddy and I shared two different entrées and we also had an appetizer. Although they were both decent, there was just WAY too much salt on everything. I'm no Afghan-food-expert, but I just don't think there should be that much salt. The restaurant provides table service. The server was efficient but not particularly pleasant or friendly. The restaurant was clean but the furnishings, linen tablecloths and napkins, dishes, and silverware showed wear. Waited and went back in, told which car is yours I'll bring it out as it comes up. Few minutes later wrong order came out. Went back again. Does not even deserve one star. Went with my wife to eat around evening time, ordered chicken boneless and ground beef. The Guy asked me twice to confirm the order and still messed up the order and brought lamb kabob instead of boneless chicken. Ground beef tasted horrible that I could not finish even one quarter, lamb kabob was tasteless. I remember old management were making so delicious kabob that I went this time time to find this disorganized management. Restaurant employees were eating their own lunch inside the restaurant, which seemed very odd. Coke can which was warm, replace old management which used to bring coke with ice in glasses. Everything in this restaurant looked upside down. I will not go there again and will strongly caution friends and family to avoid this restaurant to save your money and to avoid making yourself upset. Heard good things about this place, decided to give it a try. Wasted 3 perfectly good hours in here. I went on a Friday evening with a reservation at 7:30 for 7. Arrived at 7:30 there were only 3 other tables with guests. Barely got greeted at the door, we had a reservation for 7 people and when they take us to our table it's a table for 4 with 7 seats in it. There was problem number 1. Problem number 2- we ordered drinks, i ordered water and one of the servers just brought out 1 glass AT A TIME. Not even complicated drinks - A soda and sparkling water. OH, did I mention it was about 80 degrees in there? So waiting for our drinks was hellish. It took a while for our server to take our order. Then he finally came around, took our order and then we waited. And waited. And kept waiting. It's 9pm and none of our foods have come out yet. 2 tables already ate and left. The other table that arrived after us got their food and were getting ready to leave as well. We waited. We call the server down and he says "food should be out in a minute" ......still waiting. We see the owner or maybe the manager pointing to our table and then our server runs up to the counter to see that our food ticket WAS NOT DELIVERED TO THE KITCHEN. You must imagine how my jaws dropped. If it weren't a birthday dinner for someone else I would have left. I wanted to leave. It was hot and I was bothered by then. They offered more free salad that we didn't want, I asked for bread at least to feed this hunger, he brought out ONE bread for a table of 7. We kept waiting and finally got our food. Chicken was still raw. Sent it back. They comped us with other plates but at that point nobody was hungry anymore and we just wanted to leave. No patience for dessert at that point. My dad and I ordered the same thing, chicken kabob. He got rice and I got a pita bread with some grilled veggies. He also ordered a chai tea with an appetizer, both of which never arrived. The food was okay but my dad had about six bite sized pieces of chicken and like ten cups of rice (not kidding). The owner - who was also our waiter- forgot our appetizer despite having to go back into the kitchen to ask if they had the one we wanted. He said no, then came back and made a suggestion he didn't fulfill, i.e. bring us the food. The restaurant is so cheap it won't hire waiting staff.
