A friend managed to pull off a very special surprise birthday treat for us--an off-menu dish that requires at least 10 people and what feels like a trillion hours of slow cooking. This was my first experience at a Yemeni restaurant, and it turned out to be an incredibly pleasant and flavorful introduction. We were served half a lamb, head included, laid beautifully on a large platter of rice. But first, the restaurant itself. It was refreshing to see a place that uses real cutlery, proper plates, and actual tablecloths. I much prefer tables and chairs over booths, which often give off a fast-food chain vibe. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, though there was some drilling and repair work going on--likely related to safety or exit signage--so that's understandable. Now to the food. The rice was fluffy and deeply infused with flavor from the lamb, clearly absorbing the richness of the long, slow cooking process. The broth had rippled into the rice, creating an incredible depth of taste. If you've had biryani, this was somewhat similar, but with its own distinct character. The lamb itself was exceptionally tender--falling off the bone and melting in the mouth. For anyone who usually avoids lamb due to its strong aroma, this dish is a must-try; there was no overpowering "lamb smell" at all. The meal was accompanied by a fresh salad and two side sauces--one tomato-based and another green sauce that was extremely spicy, so proceed with caution. The mint lemonade deserves a special mention: easily the best I've had. Not overly sweet, clearly made from fresh ingredients, and perfectly balanced. We ended the meal with tea and a warm dessert that was buttery, comforting, and topped with cream--an excellent finale. This place is an excellent introduction to Yemeni or Arab food if you have never had it before. The decor is modern with a Yemeni theme. I am not familiar with Arab decor so I can't really describe it, but the facilities are very nice. I got maraq soup ($3.00), lamb hanteeth ($29.00), and shai ($4.00). The sales tax was $2.14, the meal tax was $1.44, and the 2.90% credit card charge was $1.04. We chose a window table. This brings me to the one minus of our visit: the entire restaurant was quite cool, and when the door opens even more cold air comes in. Service is usually great, though it's not rushed, so be patient. I've only had bad service once. The beef Fahsa is one of my favorite dishes. It's nourishing and comforting, perfect on a cold day. Here is my rating for the food and the service. Service- 8/10. Everyone in the store is very nice but some individuals have hard time understanding the ask but no big deal. Food overall: 4/10 Appetizer: baba ganouch was good but didn't like Zahawiq with cheese. It's just a watery cream cheese version of salsa. Chicken Mandi: lack flavors Chicken Haneeth: looks and tastes exactly same as Chicken Mandi again lack flavors Chicken Fahsa: was okay as well with too much salt in it. Bread: was the only thing that we thought was 10/10 Drinks: lime mint, was okay as well nothing special Tea- it's just a Lipton tea bags.. nothing special. Special Shai- was good. Dessert: we ordered Kunafa, that doesn't look appealing at all.. like it was not freshly prepared but sitting on the counter. We returned that. She ordered the fahsa & saltah. Our food came quickly. I found mine hot an delectable. Hers was still boiling in its granite bowl! I especially liked to apply the green hot sauce to bites of lamb, bread, and rice. My wife found her meal to be a bit spicy despite asking to ensure it was made mild. She politely reported it to our waiter. I shoveled some of my generous rice portion into her bowl, and that seemed to reduce the spiciness to her. The owner also learned of her dismay and made it right by providing her a free serving of baba ghannouge with bread. He also provided her a most exquisite basbosa in two shapes for her birthday. There was a very generous portion of lamb that was cooked perfectly with fall off the bone meat. However, the rice had no flavor and overwhelmed my palate. A bit less rice, or a bit more spice would have really elevated the dish. I also ordered a coffee, but it was too watery for my taste.
