Me and my family were craving kebob when we came to Virginia from New York. When we came we all noticed that the glasses were dirty and poorly washed. We ordered the combo deluxe and got bread on the side. The bread was not fresh and was soggy. The kebob was not fresh and it looked like they just heated it up. The service was bad and the staff were disrespectful to us. The staff also kept on telling us it was fresh and assumed we were not going to pay. We talked to the manager and he said that we didn't want the food they offered and he told us disrespectfully that we could have waited and got a new one to take it to go. Never come here. Afghan Kabob - Poor Service, Overcooked Food, High Prices Our meals at Afghan Kabob were a large disappointment because of the overcooked food, high prices, and poor service. Their lamb kabob was bland and the chicken kabob was overcooked. Despite having prices that are two to five dollars higher per item than other Springfield kabob restaurants, Afghan Kabob provides smaller portions than Kabul Kabob and Flame Kabob. As for their service - one time they were friendly, another time they were gruff. The time they were gruff I used a coupon, maybe it was that. I saw a guy doing take-out. He had to haggle to use his coupon, which the manager eventually agreed was valid, accepted. (I wonder: If they are being cheap by trying not to honor their coupons, how else are they skimping?) read more

Since Panjshir closed their Vienna location, I don't get my Afghan fix as often as I'd like. I was in Springfield around lunchtime and hit the lunch buffet at Afghan Kabob. Both the interior and the exterior are very modest. The buffet selection was relatively modest as well. But the taste delivered! Service was fine. This place is great and so cheap!! I will not spend alot of time writing b/c the person who posted before me in May hit most of the high notes. But I do belive this is one of the best secrets around for those in NOVA or the DC area. We started going here a few years back and it was almost empty when we would go. Food then was always great and people very friendly, it was just a secret I guess. In the last year or so they have done a very nice remodel inside, and gotten the word out so it has become alot more popular which is good for them. The green dipping sauce for the naan is out of this world (not sure of names, b/c thats exactly how I ask for it!). The super platter is ridiculous with eanough meat and food for at least 2 meals and the cost of everything is so low it is almost crime. Their website has coupons you can print as well, and we always get some in the clipper magazine in the mail. One other little known tip -- they do not sell alcohal there......BUT you can bring your own wine and they will open it for you, with no corking fee which is a great benefit! read more

Great food...a little pricey. The chicken kabobs are consistently amazing, and served in quantity. $14 is a little high, but the kabobs are the best i've found in NoVA. I wasn't there for the actual experience however my boyfriend did go to pick up some food. We ordered the deluxe kabob and shared it. Their meat is great because it's not salty, dry, or under seasoned. The fact that they open pretty late makes me happy too because now I know a place I can go to for late night munchies. My whole family loves Afghan Kabob. I have gone here frequently ever since they opened, and since I moved to Austin, it is the restaurant I miss the most. The food is always delicious. My favorite dish here is probably Quabili Palau. Their nan is soft and warm, and I love, love, love the white dipping sauce for the nan, which they also put on the gyros. Which brings me to my only gripe about Afghan Kabob- when you order take out, make sure they give you the sauce you ask for. Many times we have asked for extra sauce in the order, asked if they had given us the sauce in the bag when we got there, and then looked and seen it was not there. All in all though, the food has never been anything less than satisfactory. I can't wait until the next time I visit so I can get some Afghan Kabob! read more

Now if you want kabobs, this is the place where you want to go, I've yet to come across a place like this everything i've had here, from chicken kabobs to beef kabobs to kublaee pulao to mantoo they're all very good whenever i want to have really good Afghan/BBQ, either this or kabob place or Charcoal are the places i hit. But this place definitely takes the cake, from the first day i went there till now, the food quality is exactly the same, good as always, the Qahva (mint tea) is really great with the food. The place is a bit pricey, but for the quality and the ambiance they provide, it's well worth it, I don't give out five stars too many times as you can probably tell from my reviews, but this place is one of the places that deserves it. read more

My family and I have been going here for years. I've since moved to Richmond but every other month I come to visit and my first stop is Afghan Kabob. I think the to go order is a lot bigger then the dine in order, but the quality of food is still the same. Their chutney is to die for and I always ask for extra. The food here is delicious, but the service we got at the Springfield location was awful! Instead of bringing us a bill with an itemized list , the waiter brought us a piece of paper with just a sum written on it. And when we asked for a list of what each thing cost, he acted like he could not be bothered with the request and brought us menus to figure out the totals ourselves, instead! Can I give it no stars, puh-leeze? My friend and I sat down with our coupon in plain sight. (Coupon from the entertainment book) We ordered each a chicken kabob. The server said we couldn't use the coupon for kabobs. Really, the name of the place is Kabob and you won't let me use a coupon for a kabob??? The coupon was for $9.00 towards a $14.00 kabob for lunch on a Saturday and they wouldn't let us use it! Did I mention we were the only people in the restaurant??? Oh, the coupon did not exclude kabobs, just the server did. My buddy suggested we leave and the waiter shrugged his shoulders. Hey, here's a heads-up to this place: that's not how to act in this country. Having eaten there four times in four months, and having been impressed each time with the quality of the food and the service, I felt I owed it to these guys to write a review on here. Before I describe my experiences, I want it to be known that every time I have gone it has been for lunch on Sunday. With that out of the way, let me describe the experience for you: After taking your seat, you immediately discover that there are many dishes on the menu other than kabob. Feel free to venture beyond the familiar; we have enjoyed everything we have tried. The waiters will gladly offer suggestions if asked. While waiting for your meal to arrive, you will be presented with either soup or salad and whatever appetizers you ordered. When your entree is brought out, kabobs are accompanied by several dipping sauces and flat bread that was cooked in a clay oven. My mother likes the bread so much she requests another order to go! Now, at this point, your waitor will presume that you want privacy, so you'll need to flag him down if you want beverage refills. I'm sorry Nandina did not have as satisfying an experience. I am surprised her waiter was so brusque. That said, we too, have been informed that the coupon is good only for "entrees" and that kabobs (oddly) were not considered "entrees." Fortunately, the best dish on the menu, according to my family, is not kabob but rather "qaubili palau:" chunks of lamb nestled in a mound of sweetly-spiced rice with raisins and carrot shreds. If you came in wanting kabobs, you can still try the palau - and use the coupon - if you order the "super dish" and request palau in place of chalau. ;) read more

They seemed really nice but we went on Mother's Day and they were clearly overwhelmed. We wanted to love it but we ended up waiting over an hour and a half for our food, and when it came the portions of lamb were tiny, dry, and rubbery. They did bring us a few more pieces when we pointed this out, which was good, but overall the experience left much to be desired. Our waiter was working very hard, but you just need to have more staff when the restaurant is full like that. Time has not served Afghan Kabob well. A couple years ago, this was my go to place. I stopped going because I moved and the location is not convenient. But fond memories of Quabili Palau and friendly service sometimes wins out and draws me back. On the one hand, there have been improvements. The interior has had a complete make-over. The old stained carpets have been removed, leaving hardwood floors. The round tables that clashed with the square tables and made it impossible to maneuver have been removed. Now only square tables remain, and have been laid out in a sensible fashion that allows easy access for customers and waiters alike. Outdated curtains have been removed and replaced with darker curtains, and paintings no longer cover every inch of available wall space. On the other hand, the quality of service has decreased. While pleasant, our first waiter's service tonight was less than satisfactory. My table ordered drinks, an appetizer, two entrees, and an entree to go. We received drinks, and two entrees. After we were halfway through our entrees he realized that he had failed to bring us our appetizer, and offered to bring it, but we declined. At the end of our meal we waited for the to go meal, which never came. By this point, our original waiter had long since seated himself with a coworker to chat. A new man was happy to help us out, but had a difficult time understanding what we were trying to tell him. Once we were able to communicate that we were missing a meal and that the tab needed to be corrected, the new waiter was quick on his feet. This used to be a bustling restaurant where lots of people could be found almost any night throughout the week. And even on nights that the place was packed, it was always a pleasant experience. Tonight the place was almost empty - and the quality of customer has changed. Apart from my table, there were a handful of people seated at the back of the restaurant with three children that were out of control - screaming and zigzagging through the tables. They were disruptive to the point that the server bringing food to tables had to ask them repeatedly to move, and conversation was not possible. The parents did nothing to correct the behavior, and the staff did not approach the parents to ask them to control their kids. Food quality has not changed. The flavor is still great. The prices have remained the same, although portion sizes (of lamb) have been reduced and a different cut seems to be being used. Portion sizes of chicken appear to have doubled over time with no affect on price. The food was good, but I won't rush back anytime soon. I'd hate to see what happens on a busy night. read more

Buffet is good & service is almost nonexistent! Two male waiters today, one tall/skinny/friendly & the other one was short/balding & not as friendly. If you are having the buffet, ask for the Nan 'coz the mean one never brought it out nor did he ask if I wanted some. This is our go-to weeknight restaurant in the neighborhood. Our 2 and 3 year old love the chicken kabobs, fresh and huge bread, white and green sauces, pumpkin appetizer and especially the soup. 9 out of 10 times, the meat, bread, and sides are all cooked perfectly. Every now and then we catch them on an off night and something is a little cold or overdone. But there is a reason we keep going back. We love the lack of a crowd and quiet atmosphere - but people really should try this place out - it's great. read more

The Aush (soup) was incredible. The rest of the food was mediocre and bland. The chicken kabob was undercooked and very stringy, possibly what lead to the illness (see below.) The flavor was all right. Nothing special either way. My gyro was folded in such a way that there was a large chunk of tin foil right in the middle of the sandwich. I had to unfold it and eat it with a fork. Not to mention there was very little meat in it and what little there was had almost no flavor. Worst of all, we weren't feeling so well afterwards. After coming home I had some serious stomach problems and my fiance was throwing up. Let's just say if it weren't for the incredible Aush, it would've definitely been a 1-star experience. read more

How do you cook chappali kabob without spices, tomatoes, and onions. I am from that part of the world and they DO NOT know how to cook authentic afghan food. I came here for lunch and there were hardly any patrons so i had my doubts. The host/waitor/manager? showed me their buffet first and I am a picky eater so I choice to select from the menu. Loved what i ordered. Their salad was romain letuce but their dressing was very good. I ordered a spicy chicken dish and it was sooo yummy. They make fresh peta bread too. I cannot recall the name of the dish all I know is there was red and green peppers in it and that sauce was creamy and delightful. I will surely visit agan! read more

This is a strange place. It is tucked in a stripmall next to JAXX. The ambiance inside is weirder yet. You walk by a huge diorama of an Afghan village, with electricity and shantytown detail, to get to your table. It is always almost empty. The service is awkward but friendly. The food, however, is good. I recommend the lamb and rice dish (Palau) as it is super comfort food...warm and aromatic and juicy and saucy. You also seem to get a bowl of soup no matter what you order. They have a lunch special which is good and very reasonably priced. Chick pea side is mediocre. read more

The last time I went to this place I gave it an awful review. I was invited back and was told there's a new owner. The place was redone and looks pretty nice inside. I ordered mantu for my appetizer and lamb kabobs for my entrée. Both were delicious. I also sampled the aushak, chicken kabob and quabli-all were great, except the quabli was on the sweet side. I went during lunch time and ordered two appetizers, the Bouranee Baunjaun (the menu says it come w/homemade yogurt and Afghan bread) and Boolawnee (the menu says it come w/a side of homemade yogurt). After waiting for about 25 minutes, I finally got my two little appetizers. Only to find no yogurt and no bread. I asked the waiter for the bread and he told me that bread is not served with a carry out order. What?! After waiting for my food for so long and it wasn't even busy (only one couple was eating in the restaurant) I couldn't believe he wouldn't even be so kind to give me a piece of bread! He was rude about it too! I returned to my car but realized I forgot to ask for the yogurt that comes w/my appetizer. When I went back in to ask for it, the man insisted that I did get it but it was not in the bag. BUT, then he told me that they don't give yogurt with carry out orders. I couldn't believe either how cheap they are or if he was just being difficult and rude w/me. I told him that their menu is deceiving and if that was the case it should at least state that in small print. What complete false advertising! I told him I was upset about it and then he walked away while I was talking and went into the kitchen. I heard a lot of yelling and he took almost five minutes. He came back with a container of yogurt and didn't even smile or apologize for all of the inconvenience. I certainly didn't eat the yogurt because I was afraid that they did something bad to it since he took so long getting it. I will never go back and I would never recommend anyone to this place. i did not have that many expectations despite the good reviews once we saw the location. it's tucked away behind a gas station and filled with americans, and not many afghans which typically indicates authenticity. we ordered kabob deluxe and the quabili palau. I was really thoroughly impressed with the flavor of the food. kabob deluxe - you get a combination of the ground beef, lamb and chicken. the lamb was my least favorite. i thought they over cooked it a touch which made the meat a bit tough. the chicken was amazing. i normally dont like chicken kabobs because most places make it dry, but here it was perfect. still juicy and the char taste on the outside was just perfect. the ground beef was pretty standard. the combination of meat came on top of the naan bread. and holy smokes - the naan was amazing. it was warm and fresh, crispy outside layer but still soft and moist on the inside. prob the best i've ever had. quabili palau - this was also amazing. tender pieces of lamb with rice on top. but the rice here is topped with carrots and raisins which adds the perfect amount of sweetness to this dish. the meat sauce (palau) which comes on the side was essentially just huge chunks of meats. all together it was great. and it was such a large portion, i only ate half and got to take the rest home to enjoy again! the soup that they give before the meal was ok. nothing spectacular. dont expect some wonderful 5 five service because its just not that kind of place. you go for the food. delicious. totally want to go back and try some more stuff. read more
