This is the worst diner I've ever been to. Their waffles are greasy grilled eggo waffles! They batch bacon and homefries in huge quantities that sit on the side of the grill all day and night (or quite possibly dayS and nightS). The service is terrible, although I do feel bad for the underpaid overworked waitresses. I think that waiting on too many high school and college kids who order a coffee and sit there all night making a mess and then stiffing them for tips has had an effect. Three Brothers Diner, right down the street on Dixwell (towards Downtown New Haven, but still in Hamden), is open 24 hours, AND is delicious. Much better food and service than Acrop :). read more

Solid diner food at reasonable prices. I have to remove a star because when I came for brunch coffee and water took forever to come, and never got refilled until we got our check and specifically asked. The coffee tasted burnt and was not good at all. The food itself was good, but the service just wasn't anywhere near some other places in the area, so I won't go back unless its late at night and I'm craving diner fare. The servers just can't fathom a twenty-something coming in and actually ordering something, instead of goofing off. (Like most of the QU/Hamden High groups that SO often screw it up for the rest of us in the neighborhood.) Consequently, the service is short, rude, and don't expect much talking from them if you honestly decide that tonight you'd really enjoy a nice cold glass of *gasp* water! I was disappointed with my experience in this diner. We had to wait a bit for the table to be cleaned and then had to wait till the girl behind the counter to tell us it was ready. We sat down and had to wait for our menus, a few minutes later our waitress showed up to take our orders and we still did not have them. My younger son ordered spaghetti and meatballs, after the order had gone in we were informed that they didn't have meatballs. This diner has an unusual way of treating there customers. I was having trouble using their menu it is stretched out. AlI I wanted was a turkey sandwich on white toast with bacon. My new waiter was having a hard time and I thought I saw a special that combined it all for 10.25 with no fries or side. It comes out with no turkey, as I had misunderstood the special. I said that I could take it as is but the waiter kept saying that he could do it in a few minutes. And he did. Sadly, her forgot to tell me that they would add on 5 dollars. When I talked to the manager she coldly told me that this was entirely my fault. I paid $18. fora turkey sandwich with bacon. I did want the cost that was extra removed from the sandwich,I wanted nothing for free and I tipped the waiter 15% because he seemed clueless. I had been at the counter and over heard their loud conversation about a missing waitress and calling 911, but they took out their frustrations on me and the new waiter. If you go be very careful about what you order. The days of including fries is long gone at this diner, $4.25 will get you a side of those!!! The Acropolis diner on dixwell avenue is a landmark I remember coming from the bar with my friends having breakfast. I do not have just one breakfast I had two full size breakfast every time my friends and I went to the diner. There is one thing that you can never beat diner coffee. I have no idea how they make it but it's always wonderful. The staff it's always pleasant no matter what time or day you go 9:00 a.m. noon 5:00 p.m. 12:00 midnight they're always pleasant. Always clean never disappointing there and now for the chefs. When you order your order always comes out hot and fresh I've never been disappointed there once never if you need a diner to go to and you're in Hamden the Acropolis diner on dixwell avenue is the place to go. read more

Standard diner food, nothing fancy here. I like this place because it's always open and service is relatively quick. The breakfast is basic and consistently just okay. We usually get an omelette, eggs Benedict, scrambled eggs and sides. It's a solid diner. Came in Sunday night, needing a breakfast/dessert fix. I was seated immediately, my waiter was nice, and on it. He let me get my bearings, but I was ready. I had eggs with home fries and bacon before my tea was cool enough to drink. Like 6 min from order to filling my fork. I know I won't get this quick of service when they're busy. Not sure why all the poor reviews for this diner. While passing through the area, was going to get off the Merritt and grab fast food. Instead found this place right off the exit and decided to give it a try. Typical Greek diner, loaded down menu with 24 hour breakfast and tons of selections for lunch and dinner. Decided to order breakfast and it did not disappoint. Omelettes were pretty good and home fries and toast was done right. Grilled cheese, BLT and fries was also done just right. After reading the other reviews, I realize that I may not fully appreciate what this dinner means to Hamden locals. Sure I live here, but I'm not *from* here, so I don't have drunken late-night memories to enhance my feelings towards the place. T. and I came here for breakfast on a weekend, assuming that since it was nearly full that there must be good food. WRONG! Oh so wrong. How is it possible to screw up breakfast food so badly?? My french toast and "maple-flavored" syrup were disappointing. My husband's pancakes were so bad he didn't finish them, only the 2nd time I've seen him leave food behind at a diner! I had a side of bacon that was bland and dried. The service was slow, although the waitress was nice enough. OK- I understand that diners don't serve gourmet food. But it's really not too much to ask that you serve decent food. I promise- it's not all that hard to make good pancakes, french toast and bacon. What can I say? it's a pretty standard CT-style 24-hour Greek diner with reasonable prices and solid food. Nothing more, nothing less. Is it the best diner food I have ever had? No. Is it the worst? Definitely not. But I am generally happy with everything I have ever had here. I tend to go here whenever I am with one of my parents and we don't know exactly what we feel like having, everyone finds something at the diner. The service is a bit slow but friendly, the restaurant is always clean. And I can get breakfast 24 hours, which is never a bad thing. The standouts for me here are the turkey club (triple decker) which comes with their del-i-cious french fries as well as their giant salads. read more

I recently had a horrible experience here. I got out of work late so my dinner options were limited. I decided to give Acropolis a try. I was very disappointed on how the customers treated the staff. I understand that it's not the restaurants fault entirely, however I was very disturbed by the lack of manger presence. I witnessed a waitress being screamed at by an upset customer and no one came to her aid. The customer was 100% in the wrong in this particular situation and the poor waitress was sent to the wolves. I haven't been to this place in about ten years and it was better than I had remembered. The environment is a very standard diner. The menu is gigantic and I can only comment on breakfast. Our server was very friendly. I went out on a limb and had the avocado toast with poached egg...I really did...and it was actually quite delicious. My visiting Dad, who chose the spot, was very satisfied with his usual, unadventurous, breakfast. Prices were reasonable. If you like standard Greek diners, this seems like a reasonable option.
