Intrigued by the minimal menu yet amazing food photos, I was like, alright, we're getting breakfast right here for this Memorial Day. My friend & I got there by 10:30 AM. And yes, my friend said the drink was good a-go. We came back after making a small trek to Peter Pan Donuts to finally to be able to order food at 11 AM. I ordered the chicken karaage bento with egg salad & my friend ordered the chicken karaage sandwich. The verdict? Was it worth the way?! Oh boy, YES it was! First of all, the chicken karaage was super fresh - the meat was so moist & juicy and you could still see the steam from the heat but not taste it burning your tongue. And the karaage was perfectly fried with a nice crunchy texture on the outside. And that sauce fully complimented that meat sooooo well. I also have to say the staff is on point as well. ACRE is a great lunch spot hidden in Greenpoint! When you first walk in, you are immediately greeted by the bakery and shop. The shop sells Japanese snacks, ceramic dishware, tea towels, and other little home goods like vegetable-shaped obanzai dishes. I came here on MLK Day and it was pretty busy. You order first at the counter and then seat yourself at a table. My friend and I happened to grab one of the last tables right as we came around 12:45pm. I ordered the veg katsu bento box, which came with four fried veggie balls (similar to a falafel), salad, purple rice, and pickled vegetables. It was a simple yet delicious meal. I was dying to see if ACRE was as cute as it looked in pics, and the verdict is in: it most definitely is! The front of the establishment sold (pricey) Japanese home goods, grocery items like $8 pistachio milk (!!), and small bites. There was an Al fresco situation going on so the lighting was perfect. We placed our order at the front and then chose seating in the back, which was full of empty tables on a Wednesday. There was actually outdoor seating in the front and back too, but I did not have sunscreen on so it was a no-go. The Japanese Egg Salad Sandwich was sadly a letdown. I'm not a great cook but I prefer the egg salad sandwiches that I make. The egg salad here was a little bland, and it came with buns. I definitely would've preferred milk bread or a roll. It was interesting that they added some fried onions to the egg salad though. I'd recommend getting the Chicken karaage sandwich instead; it was nice and juicy. Such an adorable place to get brunch! They don't take reservations so you may have to wait in line for a bit. There's a cute shop in the front with a lot of Japanese dinnerware, candles, snacks, etc. You order at the front and then pick up your food in the back when the buzzer they give you goes off. There is also plenty of seating to choose from! They have the option to sit outside the restaurant, inside, or in a little garden patio in the back of the restaurant. What I ordered: Chicken Nanban Bento Box ($20) - This was sooo yummy and I'd highly recommend it. The chicken was a perfect combination of juicy and crispy. The main difference from the chicken karaage bento box seemed to be the type of sauce they used. The sauce used was quiet rich in flavor and paired nicely with the sides provided. The brussel sprouts was also very tasty and was a surprisingly nice pairing. Horjicha Latte - There was a bit too much milk for my liking but overall I still enjoyed the taste! Oh my lawdddddd. One of the best coffee shops I've ever been to. It has a very relaxed and easy going feel and the coffee/food doesn't miss either. I love the Japanese vibe, the service, and the crafts that are on display and on sale at this quaint little shop. The black coffee was fruity and delicious, the cappuccino was nicely made and had a nice design on it. The options on the menu were limited and we had 2 out of the 3 bento box choices: Pork Katsu Bento Box & Chicken Karaage Bento Box. The wait was about 15 minutes for preparing them freshly. The bento was delicate and delicious but it's pricey with its portion. Both pork and karaage were fried properly with perfect layer, super juicy and flavorful. During waiting for street parking to be available. I finally, stopped by to have lunch at ACRE. I wasn't super hungry, so I choose salmon bento box. I was surprised that this place is self-service and so follow the trend. For self-service price, the price should be cheaper. The ambiance is great, very Japanese garden style. I was glad I went early the day because when I passed by before, this place always packed and crowded but this time it wasn't busy at all. You order food and drink at the counter and pay then they give you an alarm to notify you when your food is ready then you go pick it up by yourself and bring it back to your seat. What a cute secluded spot! The place was a bit of a walk from the subway station, but you would know you're there when several people in front of you head into the same entrance! On a lunchtime weekend, the line was already taking shape, and it has every right to be. The decor was so earthy yet modern. There's aesthetic kitchen ceramics, drinks, and other products to purchase by the cashier, although quite pricey. You would order at the front and when your buzzer farts, pick up your food by another counter. There was plenty of seating, with outdoor dining as well if you don't mind the summer heat. I got the Chicken Karaage Bento Box ($18), which came in such a cute and simple presentation. The chicken, was deeeelish! So juicy, and might I say, one of the best Japanese fried chicken out there. It was tender, well moisturized, with the perfect batter ratio! There was quite the soy sauce and mayo over on this side, so it's great we had the bland salad and purple rice to cut through some of that heavy flavor. I didn't even notice the pickled radish, but it was there next to the brussel sprouts. While a bento box is hard to be anything worth gushing over, the cute interior and sweet staff gives extra brownie points! Chill Japanese style brunch spot for a light, healthy (?) and filling meal! Came on a Saturday afternoon and most of the tables inside were full (the back yard was packed). Dining in here was like a food court, you have to first order food at the counter at the front of the restaurant and then pick up food at another counter when your beeper alarm goes off. We each ordered different bento boxes: Chicken Karaage, Chicken Nanban, and Pork Katsu. The Japanese fried chicken was freshly made for sure as it was hot! The juicy tender meat and crispy batter was phenomenal. We all enjoyed what we ordered so I can not say what is best but #TeamNanban Love that they have purple rice and salad plus other pickled sides so it feels like I'm getting a well-rounded nutritious meal. Pretty sure you clean after yourself but thankful for the kind staff to offer clearing our table when they noticed we finished! There's even a sign in the shop saying people without lunch orders shouldn't just occupy spots like that. That said we opted for the space next to that one for better comfort. I specifically had the Chicken Nanban, and I have no complaints there. Good enough size and decent crispyness. Veggies on the side I was fine with, though your mileage may vary as my family member thought the salad and brussel sprouts were a bit bitter. The Chicken Karaage was also pretty satisfying. Matcha latte was more or less standard fare. Nothing to note about it. We bought the Matcha Vanilla Cake and I believe it's the Yuzu Vanilla Cake for dessert for later. Super cute storefront and cafe/lunch spot in Greenpoint, Brooklyn! We walked here from LIC but biked back via Citi Bike. Very welcoming interior!! It came in this cute bento box with a side salad, brussel sprouts, purple rice, and the fried chicken. When I looked on the instagram page I didn't think it would be filling but I was super full upon finishing my bento. We also got the fries to share. My only gripe would be that I wish the fries came with a side of the sauce (like the sauce they put on the fried chicken....some kind of mayo). I also wished the chicken had more sauce. It is pretty moist by itself but I like a lot of sauce in general. The fries are waffle fries which I love! I also got a side of egg salad (extra $4), you can get miso soup too ($4). Really cute place in Brooklyn serving fast and delicious Japanese food! Pesto Avocado Sandwich - 13$ (3/5) this was underwhelming as it was small and thin. It's a decent snack but not a brunch item I would get again. Japanese Egg Sandwich - 12$ (4/5) This was also just ok. It was a little bland for my taste and the bread was somewhat dry. The size was big though and it has a good amout of vegetables! Chicken Karaage Sandwich - 14$ (10/5) This was really really good. First off it was thick with each kaarage piece huge and plenty of delicious veggies! The kaarage was so juicy and perfectly flavored it went on so well with the horseradish sauce. Everything tasted so good together! There was also more than enough karaage piece so that I could eat leftover pieces after finishing the burger! I mentioned it to my husband, and we decided to order in for lunch. I logged into my Uber eats account and noticed that they were unavailable which, honestly, heartbreaking. I called the restaurant and they said they should be open on the platform, and the kind person on the phone was able to fix the iPads so I could place my order. I got a Japanese egg salad, a yuzu vanilla pound cake, a vegan chocolate chip cookie, and my husband got the avocado pesto sandwich. Having came back from Japan recently we were craving a hearty Japanese breakfast. When we got to acre, we were greeted by a store full of kawaii kitchen trinkets and a short line to order.
