For sweet puffs I love the raspberry dark chocolate. My bestie prefers the blueberry cream. Or jalapeño puffs. The cinnamon twists are also a fave. If you go early, there's day olds wrapped nicely and for half off. Look to see where to stand. The line wraps around the building since the parking lot is so small. Please be mindful and don't stand in the one handicap spot. Everyone that works here rules. So kind and genuine. The pizza is good, too, but there's no red sauce. It's very bread-y and almost always vegetarian. There's typically two types and they change seasonally since they partner with local farms for the freshest ingredients. I come to ACME Bread Company on one of the normal busy Sunday as what they always have! Longline in front of the bakery and one person at a time can walk inside the bakery. I have lined up for about 25 to 30 minutes before I can get inside and order the baked goods I like. They have provided hand sanitizer right in front of the front door, so you can clean your head before and after your order. The line was moving at a reasonable speed. Just an idea for who has never been there, I am started out of the parking lot at almost right at the street corner. It took about 30 minutes to the front door. They picked up and packed my order very quickly and they are very friendly. I have ordered some croissants and a couple of cinnamon twists. I wish I have ordered more cinnamon twist, it is so good! The croissants are just okey! No surprises! But still much better than those you get from Costco! The parking lot in front of the bakery is not very big. But customers do move in and out fast! Sure, long lines, but you are getting fresh baked bread from the source! I got the usual whole wheat seeded loaves for my hubby, but I also decided to try their sourdough wheat levain. And yummy! The sourdough wheat levain was moist on the inside and had a good amount of sourdough flavor! I was very impressed by the quality. As I cut the bread at home, I couldn't resist and ate a few pieces plain! Of course, having to stand in a long line, I caved and asked for a piece of the Romano pizza. Oh boy, I hate that I never thought to try it before. Ugh I absolutely adore this bakery!! My stepdad always brings us Epi bread from the farmers market and I absolutely love it. My family and I decided to go to Oakland for the food and I'm so glad this bakery was one of our stops. The line was soo long and wrapped around the corner but moved pretty efficiently. Once arriving there, you know right away that the hype about Acme is real!! Almost every single customer leaves with two huge bags of breads/pastries. When it was our turn, I noticed that they take strong precautions against Covid, with signs on the outside of the store and only letting in one customer at a time. We got the epi bread, croissants, and the pizza, which had pesto, shiitake mushrooms and olives in it. The Epi bread did not disappoint as usual. I always eat it for breakfast with olive oil and eggs. The crust is always crunchy and the inside is soft and is complimented so well by the olive oil. The pizza was a thick and fluffy crust that was crispy on the outside, and so good!! You could tell all of the ingredients were fresh and the shiitake mushrooms tasted surprisingly great with the pesto. The only item I didn't like that much were the croissants. Hands down my favorite bakery of all times when it comes to bread and even some other baked goodies. I was first introduced to Acme when I used to work at the Ferry Building in SF. The way they make their Sweet French baguettes (and any other bread) is just to die for. Nice beautiful crust on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside. If you get it fresh either at the stores or at the bakery itself there's no comparison to any other bread. I love their "sweet" stuff. Sweet French baguette, sweet Italian loaf, the Epi baguette ( that mimics leaves on a tree branch. And even though I'm not a sourdough fan, their sourdough isn't overly sour and adds a sensational flavor if used for grilled cheese or croutons. All their breads freeze well if wrapped properly and you can eat it over a few days if stored properly. Last thing I will mention is you have to try their buttermilk cheddar and chives biscuits. You can find it at their San Pablo location after 11 am everyday. This locations also have epic pastry to chose from. From a decidant and huge ham and cheese turnover in flaky puff pastry, cheese twist, sweet and gooey their version of monkey bread (sorry I forget the formal name), jam fills puff pastries, cookies, madalines, and even Roman style pizza. Don't let the line out front intimidate you and make you drive by. It's not a long wait and it moves pretty quickly. You can't go wrong with any of the breads but the Pain au Levain is probably the most popular and goes good with almost every meal. Especially if you're making avocado toast. But they are quick and efficient so the line goes relatively fast. May not be great in the rain. Parking is quite small but at least they have spaces available. Nice artisan bread place. Not much on pastries. FOOD: Tried a few nice things and loved the variety of small sandwich breads along with large loaves. The jalapeño cheese bread has a good kick to it and isn't overwhelmed by the cheese, but you can definitely taste it. Got the cheese stick and thought it was only okay. However the goat cheese and kalamata olive puff was good, especially when heated back up. Madelines were nice and fresh with a mild sweetness. The icing was harder like candy instead of softer. The lines are the only detractor. Sometimes you have to wait a really long time. I wish there was a faster process, or other acme locations to help disperse some of the business. Covid slows things down even more. A 30 minute wait is typical at almost any time of day. Everything they make is really good, you can't really go wrong, so try a few breads and or pastries. Three words: try the pizza! Even after having lived in the Berkeley area for 4+ years, this was my first time trying Acme during my most recent visit to the Bay. My friend recommended that I try the pizza and now, as I'm sitting here writing reviews, I'm drooling just thinking of how amazing that pizza was. I have many regrets that I wasn't able to visit Acme more while I was living in the Bay because of this pizza. Acme is located in a pretty unassuming shop with a small parking lot with pretty limited and tight parking spaces (pretty typical for the Bay). They have an amazing selection of breads and pastries in their storefront. It's definitely a testament to their popularity that I've never failed to see a line out the door when I've passed by. This time, I was part of this line out the door. It moved pretty quickly: they have two cashiers manning the front of house and have worked out a pretty efficient system to get the line moving. One of the cashiers was a little frazzled because we'd somewhat blocked the door and didn't realize that we were blocking other people from entering (a little communication helped and we got ourselves out of the entryway!). However, the person taking our order was really kind, professional and was really happy to walk us through our questions. We ordered the mushroom pizza per our friend's recommendation, and another friend of ours also ordered some of their other breads. The slice is incredibly generous - about the size of my fist! and that first bite! A little tang from the sourdough + fat from the olive oil + umami from the mushroom was SO GOOD...AND, this all comes from someone who doesn't even love pizza. However, I'd definitely buy that pizza again in a heartbeat. Anyways, the length of this review is getting to be a little much and I think you've gotten the point by now. ACME bread was the first stop my sister and I made during our Berkeley day trip. My sister loves their olive bread and often makes a special trip to a local European market near our neighborhood just to get it (because we don't have an ACME store near us). I've been to the location in the ferry building but don't recall ever buying bread from ACME before. This was my first time at this location and I was super excited to try it. We arrived around 10am and there was already a short line out the store. But don't be too alarmed by the line out the door because the store is so small that there can only be 2-3 people at the cashier at once. Also, the line moves pretty quickly because the cashiers are pretty efficient with taking your order and bringing you your bread. I think the only downside is that you have to peak into the window to see what they have first otherwise you get rushed to order by the time you get to the front of the line. I felt like I barely had time to think about what I might want to buy before the cashier moves on to tell you how much your order is. We ordered the olive bread, a jalapeno cheese turnover, and an almond croissant. The only thing I ate was the almond croissant. It was definitely a good croissant but I felt like I didn't even get to the almond filling until I was halfway through with the croissant. It seemed more like a regular croissant with a hint of almond rather than an almond croissant to be honest. Despite that, I still really enjoyed it though. While I was at the store, I actually realized that my work place actually carries and uses ACME bread in our café once I saw the pain epis because of the interesting shape. I highly recommend trying this! It's plain but it's one of the best bread that I've had. I could probably eat the whole thing as is. Definitely try out ACME bread if you've never had it! I love bread, and I love Acme bread!! Have only been to the storefront once (so far -- planning on going back for their challah bread, which apparently they only carry Friday - Sunday ), but have had the opportunity to eat their bread through other avenues (ie. catered events, restaurants that use their bread, etc.) Love supporting local businesses, and also just good! bread! Also love how the ingredients are whole, simple, and minimal :') There was a small cafe next door, but didn't have a chance to go in. When we got there, there was a small line but it moved pretty quickly. Would highly recommend looking online / through Yelp to figure out what bread you want to buy before you get there, because the actual store space is very small. Once you're inside, you're at the register and are greeted with the workers who are ready to give you your bread. I wasn't expecting this and was a little overwhelmed with all the choices (what kind of bread? what size? what shape?). I appreciate all the options and would want to explore more in the future, but not having exposure before getting to the counter definitely lead me to picking a random (albeit still really good) selection of bread! Between my partner and I, we got the pain au chocolate, sourdough round, and sourdough loaf. The pain ai chocolat texture was reminiscent of croissants, though I personally wasn't a big fan of the way the chocolate was spread through the bread we got (ie. it was concentrated on the two seams on the left and right of the bread). The sourdough was good, even though I might prefer Tartine's sourdough, it was still very tasty and the price makes this definitely worth!
