FYI they charge you an extra $5 as a deposit for the bowl. THE FOOD: * Pork rib potato noodle (~$10) - 4 stars Good flavor! The potato noodle has a super chewy texture, almost like boba. You're either into that or you're not. I asked for not spicy, but this was still mild to medium spicy.

Another review described potato noodles to have the texture of tapioca pearls/boba and it would be a spot on description. It has a very chewy texture that is unique to this type of noodle that I was really vying for. The menu at the stall is almost entirely in Chinese besides the potato noodles so it can be hard to be sure what you're ordering. The veggies included were mostly some beansprouts and spinach; you can also pick the spicy level. There's a little condiment tray off to the side of the ordering area that you can use to customize your bowl a little but you don't get a small bowl for dipping or any plastic side plate/bowls unless you pay .25 cents. The portions were good; I think it would be good to get a bowl of noodles here and maybe an appetizer-like dish from another stall like the panfried/steamed soup dumplings or a rice roll for two people. I actually really enjoyed the burger; there was a good mix of lean and fatty pieces of meat. The outside was toasted well while the inside was still soft. It wasn't dripping in sauce so the bun stayed nice and solid even after it cooled down and was still tasty. The bites of green pepper peppered throughout the bun added a really nice crunchy contrast to the meat. I understand that in Chinese culture there is not much hospitality for food but the interactions did feel callous so I'm hesitant to go back given the plethora of other stalls in the food court.

This is such a nondescript shop. I have walked past it, parked right outside it when going to other…read moreshops and never even noticed this place. I only learnt of this place when googling for roast meat and this popped up. The store is divided into two sections. One for the cooked roast meat where the menu is at the back of wall. Written in both Chinese and English, they are quite hard to read though. Bring your glasses or better yet, take a picture and zoom in on the photo like what I did. The other part is where you can buy fresh uncooked meat. The other side is lined with refrigerated items. Besides buying the roast meat, you can also have it with rice with your choice of meat. I bought a pound (min order) of roast pork and half a Hong Kong style roast duck (pipa duck I believe). I will say communication can be quite tough as the staff seemed more comfortable speaking in Cantonese which I do not speak. So it has to be a basic ordering in English without any questions or requests. The roast pork has super crispy skin which is really good but it also has such a thick layer of fats underneath that I had to remove it. You could probably save those fatty bits and fry them later to make lardon and add to your home cooked noodles or something. I like the pipa duck. Tender and tasty meat. Tip/Life hack: I googled and found a way to reheat the leftovers so they do not dry out -- cover the meat with foil and heat in oven at 400c for 20-30 mins. For the roast pork, I only covered the meat part and let the skin peeked out so the skin got even crispier.

Only issue I have with their chicken is the way they chopped it up. They seem to have chopped it at a very awkward way. Also their chicken is somewhat lacking in crunchiness. It is very flavorful. My favorite is their pork belly rice bowl. It is something I will go back for.

We ordered their wing appetizer with their house bbq sauce and we agreed that their house bbq sauce was really toothsome and delicious. As the main we ordered their Jurassic platter which consisted of pulled pork, 2 Dino beef bones, a half rack of St. Louis ribs, 2x bbq chicken quarters, which all came with four sides of our choice: fries, Spanish rice, cheesy corn and 2 corn bread servings in muffin cups. All the meats were outstanding in their seasoning, fall off the bone ribs, including the chicken quarters which we found from other restaurants to be dry. But not here. Their fries were barely room temp, crinckly and dry, the Spanish rice was almost tasteless, the cheesy corn was very flavourful with just the right amount of spice from the jalapeños, and the corn bread muffins were warm but a bit on the sweeter side for my palate. The best corn bread I've ever had was from Memphis BBQ. We added an extra half rack of St. Louis ribs and a single bbq sausage to the platter to make we tried as many choices that they had. The Jurrasic platter was supposed for 2 but with the appetizer it easily served 3 with extras to take home! They had 3 daily choices of sausages available. I ordered their Tocino sausage which is their Filopino inspired cured sausage that also contained corn kernels inside which we found disapointing in flavour. We spoke to our waitress about the disappointment with our fries and Spanish rice and gave her our positive feedback on the bbq meats. She listened and shared our comments with the kitchen. The kitchen rewarded us with a complimentary dessert of their house made carrot cake with cream cheese icing served hot with whipping cream to share! This gesture redeemed themselves to us for the future, that they listen to their diners and would try to remedy their mistake. Verdict: 5/5 for bbq meats and 5/5 for service. The dining room was an open airy space with large windows facing the main street. The tables had enough space between each for private conversations. The room was nearly full while we there which is a positive sign of their popularity. They also sell their award winning rub and bottled bbq sauce to take home too. Reservations optional but appreciated. Cash and cards accepted.

Updated review…read more.. Still the best bbq around. Beautifully smoked. Sauced just right. Top notch cornbread. Deeply flavourful put beans, and decent corn. Loved the tap list. Loved the bourbon flights. Ambiance is great. Price point reasonable. However...... The manager (or the person I assumed was the manager) was hurried and terse. No rude or anything, just rushed. The servers were good. They had to check when I asked questions regarding vegetarian options - Which brings me to my only quibble... Hubby really wanted to go to Hog Shack for early Fathers Day. He remembered wonderful BBQ meals there in the past. One of my adult children is vegetarian though. I thought Hog Shack might be able to cobble a plate of sides for the vegetarian. We weren't expecting pulled jackfruit or pulled tofu or other options offered by places such as Slims (Vancouver) or Patina (Port Coquitlam). Our expectations were set reasonably low. My daughter ended up ordering the tater tot's, but asked that they not include the brisket topping. She ordered corn bread and a side of cooked veggies. The cooked veggies never came. The tarot tots (sans the brisket) were charged at FULL PRICE! I ended up asking for the veggies to be removed from the bill (they didn't forget to charge for it) and asked why the tater tots weren't reduced in price to reflect that no brisket was included. The manager ended up giving me a small container of brisket - which is fine, because I paid for it lol!! The gator tots came to over $23!!! Yeah - I would expect a reduction in price or the brisket on the side. I still tipped on the original bill - I wasn't expecting happy with our servers. Overall, I wasn't expecting "vegetarian friendly" but I also wasn't expecting "vegetarian hostile" Keep this in mind - if someone in your party doesn't eat meat - go to Slims or Patina. If everyone in your party is a raging carnivore - go at it at Hog Shack.

Parking is available in the messy circular parkade below. The place is pretty small. There are maybe 3 small tables at most. The place really is meant for takeout. Of course there is also the option of taking the food to the mall food court. Staff are friendly and helpful. I was already a fan of the original RGK location, and this place delivers. The meat is very tender and juicy, and the price is surprisingly competitive. Dare I say it - this place gives the likes of Hopewell (E Vancouver), Cantonese (Kingsway), and HK BBQ Master (Richmond) a run for their money when it comes to the best Cantonese BBQ in town. As of the time of writing, there is another new BBQ shop (Money) on the other end of the mall. Glad to see some competition. Oh yeah, this place blows the BBQ place inside the mall (ground floor, next to the escalator) out of the water. Don't even bother with that place. We have a clear winner here. Highly recommended.

Ordered their 2 item Rice Combo Crispy Pork and Char Siu. Portion sizes were big and the I judge the Crispy Pork by it's crispiness, crunch after crunch is all I heard. The Char Siu had a good ratio of lean (80%) to fatty parts (20%) and was barbecued perfectly with honey but not too charred. The place is quite tight with 3.5 (2 seat) tables if you wish to dine in.
