Tom saved the day when I lost the only key to our 2005 Ford Explorer. The dealership referred us to Long's since they couldn't cut a key by VIN because Ford doesn't keep that information on file past ten years, and no place had been able to make a spare ignition key for us since we got it used, because it turns out you need two keys to make a duplicate without specialized equipment. Tom got here in a day, got in the locked truck and made two new programmed keys and a plain door key for a reasonable $250, and he explained why the places we tried before couldn't duplicate the key we had. I needed to replace my one and only key to my 2006 Honda Accord that was becoming worn out and would barely fit in my door lock and ignition. I called to get a quote for 2 replacement keys and I provided the person that answered the phone the car year, make, model and explained how my current key was barely working. The person who answered the phone was RUDE, CONDESCENDING AND ARGUMENTATIVE. He clearly was annoyed with the fact that I was trying to give his business my hard earned money and would not give me a quote and says he doesn't have time for my call. I called to get a quote for some high security locks with keypad/fingerprint access for our two offices. This is the first time I've inquired about something like this so I wanted to get some info from an expert. Got the doors to my house re-keyed. I had a total of 5 locks changed (2 deadbolts, and 3 door nobs). $138.00 He was there for maybe an hour? That means the pricing is at least decent. I thought the guy was pretty nice...in the interest of full disclosure, he did solicit me to write a review (hi Guy!), but he did the job, showed up relatively on time (11-1 time window, and he got there before 1), and pretty much just went to work. So I made the huge mistake of losing the clicker key to our Toyota Camry and the only copy that we had got lost somewhere on the Stanford campus. Man, did I feel like such an idiot! So after accidentally locking myself out of my bedroom, I attempted to pick the lock myself with some YouTube videos and crude tools. No luck. So I sent a text to Google (I don't have a Smartphone), and a couple of stores came up. Two of them charged $29 dollars just for coming by and $25 and above for the actual lockpicking. Long's and Rex's seem to be the only ones charging a flat rate and according to them, the only stores physically present in Berkeley. I called Long's because they offered a discounted rate because I live near the shop. Tom came in about 15 minutes after I made a call and picked the lock in under 3 seconds. He was very friendly and cordial, and he seemed to really know his business. While it's mildly upsetting to even have to pay $60 for a locking accident, Long's did the job fast and efficiently. read more

My last experience with this business was the worst that I have had with any repairman or technician of any trade. I made an appointment on May 31 to have several front door locks re-keyed in apartments that I manage. I had used this business several times in the past for the same job and never faced any problems with their prior work. The technician who came had never worked for me previously. While working on the locks, this person asked me inappropriate questions about my business, and made other personal comments/inquiries related to my perceived finances. This is totally unprofessional behavior. After the technician completed the job, I noticed that one of the latches was sticking. I then made the HUGE error of asking him to examine the lock. The technician very carelessly removed the handle from the door, using a screwdriver too large for the job, thereby stripping the head of the screws and ruining them. As if relieving some pent-up anger, he then began bashing the lock with the back of his screwdriver, damaging a mortise lock that is nearly 100 years old! Of course, this is no way to repair a lock! Afterwards, I called another locksmith and he was shocked by what I told him. I feel violated and totally disrespected. I will avoid Long's in the future. read more

I lost the only key to my motorcycle. I know, very stupid. The folks at Long's were great to me. I brought in the seat lock - didn't work, the lock was too crappy to make a copy from. I brought it the whole gas tank, they picked the lock and within an hour had a perfect key made that works in the ignition too. These guys are great! Where another locksmith failed to remake my broken key for my Subaru, Long's came through. They tried until they got it right and didn't charge an arm and a leg. I exchanged messages over yelp and even called before I made the drive to the store...somehow the price that I was equated went up and the man there wasn't as confident he could program my keyless entry remote... then all of a sudden he wanted me to sign a waiver stating that they are not liable if the they messed up programing my remote. This review is way overdue. In January 2012, they re-keyed the locks in our condo. They were quick, efficient, and very professional. They are so meticulous that they asked if the finishes on the new locks had to be consistent. Obviously they know what they're doing. They charged a reasonable rate (~$100 to re-key two knobs and a deadbolt) and that was it. Today, I took in a Subaru blank that I bought online. They explained that they can't guarantee keys that they cut using a customer's own blank. That's fine, I said. They did an excellent job and the key fit perfectly in both the door and the ignition in my car. They also made copies of my house keys. In total, I paid about $8. Again, this is perfectly reasonable and I wasn't in there for too long. I'd definitely return to Long's to have keys cut or to have their locksmiths come out to our home. read more

I went to Long's after trying in vain to get duplicate keys for an older car my kids drive after they had been robbed and had two (expensive) chip keys stolen. The sweet and helpful person behind the counter said that the key I needed to copy was a chip key but that year's model might be able to use a regular key. The big box hardware stores were not able to override the system to cut a key for us to see if it worked. He cut a key for us (if it didn't work to operate the car it would at least open the door.) It worked!!! We were so thrilled. Thank you so much for helping us problem solve and now having an additional key copy without the expense of an unecessary chip key! Tom at AC Lock saved me a fortune by successfully changing the battery on my 2008 Subaru Outback key. I tried to change it myself and when I went to the dealer for assistance, they advised me that they were unable to replace the battery due to the screw being stripped and I would need to get a replacement key which would cost $300+. They weren't able to program and cut the new key so they referred me to AC Lock. Tom took a look at the key and it didn't take more than a minute for him to open my key and replace the battery. Story goes as such. Whilst playing basketball at Mosswood Park in Oakland, my friend's car keys got stolen. With no spare keys we were forced to use the services of a locksmith. Mind you, this happened on a Sunday afternoon around 6:00pm. Needless to say, Tom came out and sat in his fancy mobile workshop (the van) and before we knew it my friend's car was turned on with a new key that Tom made on the spot. Both key fobs for my 2011 Ram 1500 failed after 8 years of use. Went to Dodge dealership and the parts department wanted $212 just for one replacement key fob plus another $100 to program it, needless to say I walked. Went on Amazon bought 2 replacement key fobs for $27 that were delivered in one day.
