I ordered a complete 2nd key for my car and they gave me a fob without cutting the master key insert. When the fob they sold me failed a month later, I had no master key to get my car moving and had to pay for a tow costing me even more $$ for the incomplete key they sold me. Door to our back building was inadvertently locked shut and we had no key. We went with a company that claimed to be nearby, in Albany, with 4-star rating on Yelp. Called Multi-Locksmith and explained the locked door and absence of a key. He quoted us $90 to $120 to open the door. First thing he asked when he arrived two-hours late : "Can I have the key please?". We said "But we explained on the phone to you this morning, we have no key. That's why we asked you here." Immediately he replied, "The charge will be $189." After a short argument, he agreed to $120, even though the hardware on the door was a low-end Kwik-Set lever-and-lock set from Home Depot. After 20 minutes of drilling into the lock cylinder, the door was still locked shut and his locksmithing skills were used up. So next, he demolished the entire outside lever-handle and lock using an angle grinder! He hacked and pried off pieces, little by little. Finally, after about an hour into his visit, the exterior door handle was gone, reduced to 20 pieces scattered on the ground. He opened the door. He left us mess of all cut-off metal pieces and grinder shavings, strewn all over the place. His receipt states the company is in Antioch, an hour away, not here in Albany. Moral of the story : Don't get suckered into hiring a company or tradesperson just because they have a 4 or 5-star Yelp-rating. read more

Had to change locks on a duplex because of an emergency the day after Thanksgiving. The guy charged over $1,000 for about an hours worth of work. He used the absolute cheapest materials and one of the locks didn't work at all. He came back to fix it by installing it backwards. When I called, the company seemed to not know who he was. Let's just say my great hike last night cost me my worst fears...leaving my key at the top of the trail. I contacted three locksmiths within my area for a quote. Within a minute the first to reply back was Multi Locksmith. We messaged back and forth, hours later the other two businesses reached out and it was Multi Locksmith that was fair and was the fastest to respond. After exchanging information Tommy said he could be at the location within ten minutes. Less than ten minutes he arrived and he was already at work. There was a few things that was discussed that made me incredibly confident that he knew what he was doing. Literally three minutes later, he was done and I had my reprogrammed key. Highly exploitative service. New locks cost about $10-20 dollars at Home Depot. Reykeying takes about 4 minutes. $500 dollars to replace the locks of two doors or $1000 dollars to rekey the four locks (top and bottom) between them is utterly absurd. And $100 dollars 'service call' fee of a technician to come to my home, give those absurd prices, and leave? Absolutely not. read more

I called for a ballpark estimate for rekeying services, but it did not work out. The only way to get an estimate is if you pay a fee for a technician to come look at the lock. Other locksmiths did not require this fee, so I was a little hesitant. I asked their license number because California requires locksmiths to be licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. I was transferred to a manager who refused to give me the #. He asked me why I needed the number. I told him politely that wanted to check the Department of Consumer Affairs license site for safety reasons before paying the fee. He got angry and started yelling. Sounds shady. No thanks. I called a bunch of other vendors and got quotes and license # with no problem. Finally went with Friendly Locksmiths, San Leandro. They were great! TIP The Bureau of Security and Investigative Service website, advises to verify the license # before your hire. It also says that "Locksmiths are required by law to carry a pocket version of their license. If anything seems wrong, stop the process. If the locksmith threatens you or insists on a charge for showing up, call the police immediately." Glad I checked the site first. read more

On the positive side, they're honest and in the end they refunded my money, but I need to write an honest review of the problems we had. Firstly we ordered duplicate Multi-T-Lock keys for a new tenant. Seemingly straightforward request but weeks went by and nothing arrived. Finally I called and texted and it seems they had completely lost my orders despite me having made them online. I had to personally text the locksmith and re-send the information I had already uploaded to their web ordering form. When we finally got the keys, we distributed them to various people but my tenant reported that his key did not work! When I contacted Multi Locksmith about this he called me and asked for photos and then went on to explain that the card I had supplied corresponded to the keys he had cut, walking me through examining the cuts. He implied the other locksmith that had installed the lock had made an error and the lock needed to be rekeyed. I called the other locksmith and he said that made no sense because the keys he had provided us worked and I should take the card to yet another reliable locksmith and make one copy and see what it looks like. Sure enough that third locksmith made a copy that doesn't look like the keys Multi Locksmith made, confirming those duplicates were all bad. I contacted Multi Locksmith again and he said he would refund me but he had to verify that he had made a mistake on his own. So I went to meet him and show him the proof and at that point he finally refunded my money. In the end he made it right but not until after waiting weeks for an order he had lost, then I, my tenant, and a friend of mine had to waste hours of time checking them, he gave me an erroneous story about how his keys were correct and the original locksmith had made a mistake, then after verifying the keys he had made were the ones that were faulty, driving to meet him so he could verify for himself the keys were bad, and finally getting a refund. He seems like an honest guy but he really should work on his company's processes and precision. read more

I locked myself out of my home and called Mulit Locksmith for help. 30 plus minutes later a young man showed up and he tried to pick the lock for about 3 minutes, then he said he had to drill it out and drilled a few hole in the lock but still could not open it. He kept drilling and tring to open it but no luck. After about one hour he called for help. 20 minutes later another man showed up and he tried, drilled more holes and still could not open the lock. He then got a screwdriver and hammer and broke the whole lock out of the door and the he could open it. They charged me $39 house call, $169 house unlock and $169 for new lock and to re-key the lock. They did not really try to pick the lock and wanted the big money by damaging the lock. Save your money and call someone else. read more

Called in for an apartment lockout on a Saturday evening. I was given a quote of $19 for an initial inspection and then ~$65 for the actual unlocking process. The person who answered the phone said the technicial would call me in a few minutes to give me an ETA. I didn't get the call until 15 minutes later and the technician told me he would be here in 40 minutes. He didn't end up coming until about an hour and a half later after I called repeatedly and when he finally arrived he told me it would be something like $36 for initial inspection, $150 for the actual service totalling about $195 after tax or fees. Didn't want to run the risk of not being able to find another locksmith since it was getting so late so I had no choice but to accept the costs but it seems rather scummy that the phone operator wouldn't tell me the price straight up. According to the technician, the price he quoted me was for unlocking a mailbox and not an apartment lockout but the technician knew he was coming to help unlock my apartment so it's not like the operator misheard me. TLDR; Operator misquoted, technician arrived 1 hour late, price was absurdly high. Listen to the other low reviews who also have the exact same problems with being lied to over the phone about initial pricing. read more

I left a Yelp review at 10 p.m. on a Sunday and Noam responded within 2 hours saying that he apologized and that he'd be in contact the following morning. Noam followed up and apologized for what happened, explained why it had happened, and completely rectified the situation. Mistakes happen and it is so rare for a business to correct these errors fully and promptly. For these reasons, I'd give Multi Locksmith a full 6 stars if I could. To screw a broken lock back in/fix it (not a replacement) was about $180. About 30 minutes of work. Pros: the locksmith was able to come that same morning, and did fix the problem. Cons: The technician tried to charge me $28 for the assessment fee. I told him that the company told me it was only $19, and he agreed. When he showed up, I wasn't there - he told my husband it was $28. Fortunately, my husband also knew it should only be $19. When I let the company know that this happened, they seemed unconcerned. The lock now works, but the technician stripped two of the three screws on the door, chipping the paint. They also won't be able to be unscrewed because they're severely stripped. The third screw no longer fits, so there's just an empty screw hole there. They said the only way to resolve this was to send the same technician back out to us, which I don't want to do. I got a call from the company that evening asking for confirmation that our appointment was cancelled - the technician had told them it was cancelled when it wasn't. I asked for a call back when they resolved the issue and didn't receive one. When I called the next day to inquire, they told me it was a miscommunication. Our credit card seems to have been charged correctly, so that seems fine, but it's still weird. Waiting for a call back from the owner... read more

I called in to make an appointment for 4:30 pm. I was told a tech should be there from 4:30 to 5:30 . At around 11am tech called me to confirm appointment and address. it's 6pm and the tech hasn't arrived. I called him to find out what's going on and he told me he got another job before mine and that he'll make it in an hour. Guy didn't show up till 7:30! Long story short, he refused to waive the $49 service charge for being 2 hours late. He wanted to charge me $89 for a spare car key even after i told him the dealer charges $40(he ended up giving it to me for $45). And i was never told that there's a 3% fee for paying with a card when i initially called to make an appointment and asked if they take credit card The work it self was good but their costumer service needs help. read more

My car ignition would not turn and the steering wheel had locked. On Saturday I was referred to Multi after my first and second choice referrals turned out not to be mobile locksmiths or were not able to help out. The locksmith assigned to me showed up soon but it became apparent that they did not have much, if any experience with Hyundai cars. Apparently this sort of thing doesnt happen much to those cars. In any case several hours went by and we were not able to get the car started by 'bumping' the key even after the locksmith left to create a new key at his house and come back while I waited. After what seemed like 2-4 hours and multiple phone calls they made to confirm options if they were forced to drill since 'bumping' would not work, we decided to give up for the night. I then contacted Hyundai roadside assist and was thinking that I would need to have the car towed to a dealership to have it fixed. When roadside assist showed up and I explained the problem they decided to try bumping it before towing it. It worked ON THE FIRST TRY! They used a large flashlight to bump it and I am unsure if that made the difference because we were only using small objects the day before but as you can imagine I was quite frustrated about the previous unsuccessful experience with Multi. I was told that this was due to 'luck' since the machinery inside the ignition has to catch the key just right. I still had to fix the ignition mechanism so I shopped around this time and found another locksmith (not a mobile locksmith) that quoted 70% less than Multi and went to them instead. They fixed the problem in less than an hour. I have to give Multi credit for 2 stars because they exhibited tenacity in helping me and offered to reduce the consultation cost. I will give the locksmith the benefit of the doubt that this was a 'luck' thing but I will let you be the judge of that. My advice: if you have a Hyundai try to find someone who has more experience or contact roadside assist first. read more

I called Multi locksmith for an eviction lockout. They were referred to me by another locksmith that I had used previously, who is out of town. Tommy confirmed an hour before the appointment right on the dot. (I requested that they call me an hour before, instead of their usual 30 minutes). The lockout was scheduled for 12:20pm, and he showed up and called me at noon. I really liked that he was there 20 minutes early. Tommy was very professional and did a great (and fast) job re-keying the lock right in his van. He helped me with getting the garage door lock back in the door as well, since the sheriff had to open it with a manual key, and he made sure that the garage door worked properly. I was charged for the service call of coming out here ($49) and the lockout ($85) for a total of $134, which I thought was a very reasonable price. After he left, I spent about 15 minutes in my car on the phone. When I remembered to go back to the unit to make sure that the sliding door was locked, I accidentally... Wait for it... Locked my car key in the car!!!! -____- I called Tommy back, who asked me what kind of car I have, and said he will turn back and help me in 20 to 25 minutes. He arrived again, and took 20 seconds to unlock my car. I asked how much I owe him, and he said that the car lockout is $75 and he's supposed to charge me another service fee, but he will waive it. I fully realize that he could have charged me another service fee, since he did turn back and spend more time on the road, so I really appreciated that he waived it for me. All in all, everything went smoothly. I would recommend Multi locksmith, and would use them again. read more

After finding I had no mailbox key for a new condo, I looked up several locksmiths in the bay area, and the first two of the three were charging in the range of $125 just to come out. Then charging again for the lock. One wanted me to take a picture of the mailbox and email it to him. Finally I made an appointment with Tommy, who came out with his truck, right on time. He opened my mailbox in about 2 minutes, installed a new lock, and was done. He charged only $95 for the work plus the lock, and left me with three keys as well.
