Updated and upgraded review. Had some friends come with me. I got them hooked on their cheese curds. A good thing to get addicted to. Fish planks were good. They have the best (and originators?) bacon cheeseburgers in my opinion. Seriously. Better than any burger joint. Granted, some are pretty dang close or equal (I'm thinking the likes of Devine Bovine, etc., mmm mmm so good!) but A&W does a tasty and well-balanced bacon cheeseburger. Their fries are great, onion rings are great, and any other sides (like the aforementioned cheese curds) are great. Well, no need to talk about the world's best rootbeer. The menu is everything you would want from a diner. Yeah, the place isn't ideal, in a gas station. Kind of unwelcoming ambiance, maybe, but it works. It's worth the visit and I think it is worth the money and your taste buds. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. Growing up- we had an A&W in our nearby mall. My Mom would only get us root beer floats and I can see why. A&W's burgers and fries are so basic. There's no flavor at all (except for the butter from the American cheese). I love driving by it, on the 10, for the old memories. I'd never buy anything there again though. read more

Refreshing stop for gas and a frosty mug (or large plastic cup) of store-made A&W root beer. A requirement when making the long ass drive to New Mexico. This wont be the fastest stop you'll ever make but the reward of one of their root beer floats is well worth it. The float which came in a long towering plastic cup was strangely proportioned at 70% creamy vanilla soft serve and 30% root beer. Now some might say that's a huge win for the consumer because the soft serve is more valuable. So from a value point, it was excellent. Perhaps I would have liked more root beer but maybe that's just a preference of mine. - YES! You can reduce the calories of your float by using diet rootbeer to save 300 calories. read more

Typical fast food type restaurant (inside of a gas station) so it was smaller and only had 3 tables to sit at. We scored some root beer floats and a burger to share. Ate there, so was bummed when they didn't give me an actual root beer mug. Asked and she said " if you would of requested one we would have given you one". Came with lots of ice cream and a little bit of root beer but she was generous with the refills of root beer so we could finish our floats properly. my family and I have been coming here since I was little so I'm very disappointed with this experienc. I came with my family to get the free root beer floats today and the minute we came in we got dirty looks from the workers and they lied straight to our faces about them serving the floats and said that another location was. I did research and found out that this location was giving them out so we questioned them and they said that their manager told them not to serve us. I'm absolutely appalled and disappointed because we brought the kids out for this outing. Very upsetting we are never returning to any A&W ever again. read more

To start, the food is not bad, but, it sucks when it's ice cold because you have to go back a second time because they didn't give you everything the first time...... I was told there was no manager on duty...who's in charge? I don't live close by so if I take the time to drive all that way, the order should be right. I didn't know this place existed. They have chili dogs, and pub style baskets, along with with delicious old-fashioned root beer floats. Fries were good, good crunch, and I loved the Pickle flavor on the burger bun, coming from perfect pickles! Yumm! This place is listed as closing at 9:00, but I went for a milkshake @ 8:15 tonight, & no one answered at the drive-thru. Drove up to the window & was told they close at 8:00. With a 24 hr. I been here a few times and have had good service.. Today after working on my feet for ten hours I wanted to get dinner on my way home. I got a #5 with no onions or tomatoes, cheese curds, ranch, and a rootbeer freeze. First they were out of rootbeer. (It's fine these things happen I got something else).... It's too bad I can't give this a negative star rating. I joined the Mug Club recently and was emailed a coupon for a free root beer float, no purchase required. There were no exceptions listed on the coupon like, "participating restaurants only" and it was for Tucson A and W restaurants. So, I went to the only A and W in Tucson before the expiration date and ordered a cod slider and my root beer float. But, the manager said they don't take coupons and wouldn't honor it. Although the fish tasted good, except for pickle slices, there wasn't anything else there... no condiments lettuce, tomatoes, etc. The bun did not hold up well, either. Also, one of the counter employees had a mask on but it wasn't covering his nose or mouth. I filled out a form on the corporate website, complaining of the service as described above and submitted it. But, I did not get a reply So, I emailed the Mug Club and still did not get a reply. I guess there is a good reason there is only one A and W in town! Update, 6/26/21 On 6/22/21, corporate emailed me another coupon for a free small root beer float. It says on the coupon, "Good at Participating locations". So, I emailed the mug club asking if I would be able to use the coupon at the only Tucson location, 15 miles from my home. Wife had a nostalgic hankering for a Coney Dog and this place was close so we went. It's inside a Chevron fueling station. Strange. But the food was just like she remembered it soo she was happy. I would like to start this review with the fact your staff are wonderful and very pleasant to talk to. But sadly that's the only good thing I can say. As far as the food, I myself use to enjoy A and W and would drive quite aways to get one of your hotdogs. Now it's been a few year but the quality is sadly gone. Now most of the time I can move on from this and try again some other time, because eateries have there off days. In this case I'm in the most pain I have ever been in when it comes to stomach pain. Their food is okay for fast food, nothing spectacular the papa burger and chili dogs are good their service is extremely slow at times so be prepared to wait at the drive thru it is attached to a gas station as well as a small ice cream shop inside the root beer floats are yummy though. I really like a&w rootbeer it's not the same as it was 20 years ago but still good. I don't think they serve in the frosty "mugs" inside but its worth it to ask if you are dining inside. I stopped here while on my way back to Tucson. The restaurant is connected to a Chevron gas station. I chose the Bacon Double Cheeseburger meal. I waited as they cooked my meal. The burger was fresh and delicious. The bacon was crispy. It came with mayonnaise, lettuce, and two pickles. The fries reminded me of the kind from Carl's Jr. They were shoestring fries with bits of potato skins left on them. Also, I could be wrong, but it tasted like they were fried in peanut oil. As for the drink, I chose A&W root beer. Overall, I'd stop here again for the burger. read more

I never get all the food I pay for going through the drive-thru anymore. Not sure what the issue is, but its bad enough I stop the car and count. Every time its been reported, the shift manager apologizes, but it never gets recorded for any other shift, and I've had to go through multiple managers to even get the complete order on my receipt. I'm tired of paying for food I don't receive, so the Tucson location will receive no more business from me. If you're going, make sure you count your order. read more

I really would like to thank the wonderful staff, particularly Andrew for making the best original A&W root beer float I could ask for. The food was excellent and the staff were super polite and attentive to customers. It was nice to see families with children enjoy dining in, not to mention the dining area being super clean. Really getting fed up with this place. They're the only A&W in town and every time I visit Tucson, I make a point of stopping here, but god forbid I should ask for a burger WITH NO CHEESE. They seemingly refuse to do it! My latest visit was last week. Every single time I go there, despite my requests, they slap a boatload of cheese on it and I have to pull over and spend 10 mins removing it! Over the years, I've regularly come here. It's the only A&W in Tucson. Sadly, the food has gone down hill. This last time, we made a stop after visiting the fair, we went through the drive through and the customer service was awful, we then get to the window, and wait to be greeted. Get to our food, and fries were stale and cold, and the only warm thing on the burger was the bread. The fact that this is the only one in Tucson, you'd think there would be more pride put into the food! It's a 45 minutes drive from my home, and 3-4 years ago, I was happy to make the drive for my double bacon burger and root beer float. The burgers were unmatched! I went through the drive-through with two young children and asked if they sold small ice cream cones. They said "no" so I asked if I could get 1 regular cone (which is quite large) divided onto two cones. Again I was told "no". I then asked if half of the ice cream could be put into a cup and half on the cone and was again told "no". I then proceeded to buy two regular cones at $1.99 each, but was given the cones with half the amount of ice cream as usual on them. So basically I got what I originally asked for but paid twice as much. Bad customer service. read more
