After Alameda's Bucket O' Crawfish the night before, I was hankering for another cajun seafood boil near my hotel in Berkley. I quickly stumbled upon 938 Crawfish and hopped in my car. The Yelp location is a bit misleading as the restaurant is not in the u-shaped strip mall the map suggests. It is just around the corner past the doughnut establishment and has a simple black and white sign outside. Despite being a Wednesday night, the place was packed and noisy. Eating solo (as I often have to on business trips) I found a seat at the bar in the far corner. The 'tender let me know I had 60 minutes left for happy hour (until 7 PM) and I quickly ordered some house wine and started to peruse the menu. I waxed and waned about what exactly to order. The bartender told me I could get 1/2 a pound of my desired seafood. Typically I like the combination platters offered and "The Combo" had everything except for crab. The only thing holding me back was the suggestion it was good for two people @ $32. I decided to go with it and I'm SO glad I did! As you will see from my picture, "the combo" is just right for one hungry person. If I had to order it again, I'd probably add .5 lbs crab, but I was happy enough with my food overall. If I had to compare 938 with other cajun seafood boil establishments, I'd probably kick it down a notch with the uninspiring seasoning and raucous bar experience. They also make a mean friend Oreo and ice cream dessert if you manage to have room left for dessert. After spending $80 , the food was totally terrible and portions were small, it was like they shopped at Safeway and served us chicken nuggets out a bag from Safeway, the. I usually LOVE crab, but wasn't in the mood, so I branched out and tried fish and garlic noodles. They both lacked flavor and came out luke warm. However, I sampled the sauce from my friends bags of shrimp and that was quite tasty. The waitress was nice, but screwed up our orders pretty bad. Therefore the partial discount was appreciated. Been wanting to try this place for years now. There is only parking in the street, or in the lot for the shopping center next door. We walked in and put our name on the list. Eventually one person crossed off their name and left. Later another person walked in, looked at the list, and exited. As we waited, more and more people queued up behind us. Needless to say, it took a very long time to be seated. And the place was not that full. For the 5 of us, we ordered the Meal: large garlic noodles, fish & chips, 2 lbs of seafood (mixture of clams, mussels, shrimp, and crawfish) with 2 corns, 2 potatoes and 3 sausages, all with the Cajun seasoning. We added a 1/2 pound of king crab legs. Apparently they do not sell dungeness crab legs by the 1/2 pound. The garlic noodles were excellent, I could still taste the garlic the next day! The fish & chips were also excellent. The fish was light and flaky, and the coating crispy without being greasy. We all chowed down on the fries too. I loved the clams, mussels, and shrimp (we got the peel your own shrimp). I really liked the corn. This was my second try at crawfish, still not a fan. It seemed silly to include just 2 potatoes and 3 sausage coins for such a large group. Potatoes are cheap, and 3 coins don't even make up one sausage. The king crab legs were big, and they were very hard to crack. We asked for crackers, and received scissors. I would have preferred a mallet. But the meat inside was wonderful. Me and my husband walked in, we are people of color by the way. They were really nice but prior to us coming, there was an incident when a group of black females left without paying. Unfortunately I was was shocked when they wanted to hold on to our ID while we dine in. I sort of felt some type of way. I didn't even bother to ask if the other non black members also had to surrender their ID. Food wasn't bad I just felt offended because I am a hard working law abiding citizen that was referred by a friend to come and eat there and I felt stereotyped. Like really? So my approach to shrimp boil is suck the head like crawdads, peel the shrimp and toss em back in to the plastic bowl where all that lime, lemon, butter,garlic and spices are sitting. By the time I sucked all those heads and peeled all the shrimp,the remaining whole shrimp are swimming in the boat they were gettin happy. Of course they aren't hot enough so the young tag team wait staff buzzing around brought over a little cup of the dry spice mix. We should have been seated within 30 minutes, one hour later we left unhappy, annoyed and NEVER returning. I have been a server and I am shocked at how this place is still in business. First impression was subpar as they do not have a hostess, someone to welcome customers in, to help answer the phone, or to help with to go orders. Along with that, an hour wait before we bailed and enjoyed an amazing dinner elsewhere, was due to the fact that the servers took forever to bus a table. We just saw a dirty table stay dirty for 15 to 20 minutes. This business needs to learn to hire another server and busser to keep up with customers. I have seen busier places that would make me more understanding of waiting an hour, this place cannot be forgiven. There were empty tables and space that was not utilized. When I'm craving some seafood my go-to's are usually Boiling crab, Ray's, or Rockin Crawfish, but I noticed 938 Crawfish when I had breakfast at Sam's Log Cabin and bookmarked it so that I could come the next time I was craving my shrimp fix. Parking down Solano can sometimes be tricky but if you get lucky you can get free street parking. From what I saw they didn't have a parking lot, but not sure if they share the lot with the strip mall next to the location. We came on a Friday night around 6PM and were seated immediately. When we walked in the place gave me a more upscale version of BC, etc because they didn't have the wooden panels with sharpie writing all over them or the decorations I'm used to. Instead they had TVs playing sports and shows, a small bar to the right, and even a small darts area in between tables. We opted for the 2lb of seafood (crawfish, shrimp, mussels, 2 potatoes, 2 corns, and 3 sausages) with the combo sauce in medium. I usually go with 1lb of shrimp, but this was a good option to share between two people especially because we wanted to try a little of everything. The medium here is def spicier than what I'm used to (but a good burn) and I like that when you dump out the sauces you see all the lime, peppers, etc that are used in the sauce. The only thing I didn't like with the sauce compared to other places is that it was a lot thicker so there wasn't much to soak up with the seafood pieces if you wanted to dip them back in after peeling. It was good but I can't say it's my fave sauce mix. They also have a happy hour (4PM-7PM) which is pretty solid with $1 raw oysters, $9 catfish sliders, $8 fried oysters, etc. We only tried the raw oysters this time and although on the smaller side, they were cleaned well. Not much to complain about in terms of service this first experience. Our waitress came by quick to take our order, refill waters, and check on us throughout our meal. For starters we arrived during HH which is from 4p-7p and ordered 6 dozens of oysters at $1 each. Shuck shuck and bring them on, I can't tell you which kind they were but they were fresh and our tummies were pleased. Upon arrival of our food we were welcomed by spicy smells and warm aromas that begged us to just try everything!!! Being a party of 7, seating was more than generous as they had many tables and a back room that could accommodate a private party. First out was the smoking 2lbs of Crawfish-ripped the heads off quick and enjoyed the mild mixed flavors. Second was 2lbs of the delectable prawns-served mild with a garlic butter taste. Succulent and superb. Third was the 2 Dungeness crabs-crack crack and lots of meat!! 4th was Fried Catfish-perfect fillet and had the the best crunch. Be prepared to block out a few hours to get messy, pealing, sucking each and every bite. Last but not lease was the Garlic noodles- delightfully garlicky and served with grilled prawns complemented each other. Did I mention dessert? Fried Bananas and Deep fried Oreos a' la mode. I will gladly admit that I'm addicted to seafood. I could eat oysters, fish, crab and shrimp everyday of my life. I am very happy about the new addition to the neighborhood and already have been here twice. We stopped in for Happy Hour each time, which is Monday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm. They have $1 Oysters during happy hour which were Kusshi. They are some of my favorites and they were very good. What a great deal. Ask for some of their spicy sauce if you are brave or go with the cocktail sauce or vinaigrette. The Chicken Wings are crunchy, big and you can get them mild, medium, spicy or insane. I got some of the insane sauce on the side. It's VERY hot, not recommended for people who don't like their mouth on fire. You can get a basket during Happy Hour for $5! We ordered a pound of the Spicy Garlic Butter Shrimp and an order of the Garlic Noodles. The shrimp was perfect, spicy, buttery and finger lickin' good. The noodles were so good and buttery and make a perfect combo meal for 2. The very best dish ordered at our table was the King Crab. It's an entire crab at market price, you can add on sides like corn, sausage and potatoes. The dish came out and we all envied Courtney's crab. It was a lot of crab meat for less than $26 and extremely great quality. The drinks specials are pretty great during Happy Hour and the selection of spirits is impressive. I was so bummed on this last visit to 938 Crawfish. My initial experience had been so positive, but unfortunately more than a year after that visit, the quality has deteriorated rather significantly. Service was friendly, but the whole ambiance felt a little lackluster. The only issue I have is that they are short staffed and often times we've had to get up from the table to ask for a refill on drinks, be time it took 20-30mins to get the food. After the Cove closed down, we did some research on Yelp and decided to try this place for some shellfish boil. It's on Solano avenue with plenty of street parking. Inside it's sort of like a sports bar like atmosphere with paper-covered tables and a roll of towels on each. It's about to get messy! They sell items by the pound but we opted for the "meal" - a half pound each of clams, mussels, shrimp, and crawfish. We opted for mild spiciness and a combo sauce (lemon pepper blended with garlic butter). The Meal also has garlic noodles, fried catfish and fries, and an interesting dessert. The boiled bag also had two corn cobs, potatoes, and sausages - all flavored with the seafood seasoning. At under $50 the meal easily serves two people! For mild seasoning, the seafood still has quite a bit of spice , and they do load up on the garlic! We liked the shrimp the best, and eventually ordered another pound - most of it became takeout. Mussels were also good and tasted fresh, but clams were tiny and you had to dig it out from the broth. Crawfish were large and good too. After coming home though, we got super thirsty - must be an after effect! For the side items, the French fries were perfect - long and crispy. I actually liked the garlic noodles but my wife felt it had a sweet aftertaste. Catfish was OK - meat was not as soft as expected - maybe should have got regular fish and chips. As for the special dessert - it was a fried Oreo with ice cream! Man - that should not be allowed, but it was good. Only reason why I gave this place two stars is because the service was HORRIBLE. I highly recommend not going on a Friday night if you want decent service. We were literally forgotten about as soon as our food came out. I get there were only two ladies working the whole restaurant but really? You couldn't have gotten more people to work on a Friday night? People were waiting out of the door. We had to ask for water five times and we still didn't get it. There was a gentleman just talking to people at the bar and occasionally going behind the bar to work. So obviously he is an employee. I actually feel bad these girls were running around trying to help but I really just blame management for not having more staff. We also had to go to the host table to ask for our bill.
