Lizzy's Cajun Cafe on Solano & Masonic blends Southern comfort with Albany history. Run by Elizabeth Evans (with her father, Chef Curtis, "The Whistling Chef," cheering her on), the menu shines with hearty crab cakes, smoky ribs, flavorful jambalaya, and Flora's Famous Peach Cobbler. Spice is balanced to please everyone, with hot sauce on the side if you want to kick it up. Cozy, welcoming, and full of soul, Lizzy's is as much about community as it is about great Cajun cooking.

Super Amazing. Always wanted to eat here but never seem to get the timing right, a friend took him here for a Sunday brunch, and we ordered the two-way combos with ribs and links, potato salad, each of which come with a little piece of bread. Both the ribs and the links were outstanding, slow cooked, smoky, tender, crispy on the edges, and the sauce was excellent. We didn't eat inside though because they were catering for an event, and it was interesting to see a bunch of super well dressed people that looked like they were from down south or had down south roots enjoying some food. Staff was super nice, the lady that served us was a real sweetheart, and the overall experience was excellent. Highly recommended for the barbecue. I'm going to go back and try some of the other things!

To be fair, I think Jamie W. and I probably need to go to Elizabeth Evans' restaurant in Albany to get the full dining experience this type of indulgent feast really deserves. Ordering it through a delivery app removed the culinary context of what we received. Because the restaurant sells full meals and not a la carte items in their menu, the choices were limited and kinda big which meant it felt pricey. With that caveat in mind, we ordered just one thing, the $50 BBQ Half Chicken and Ribs Dinner (photo: https://bit.ly/3MRjUt9). They said it served two, which indeed it did because if included two sides, Spicy Green Beans (photo: https://bit.ly/3tlaEGj) and Macaroni & Cheese.(photo: https://bit.ly/39POhBL). Yes, there was plenty of food for fifty bucks even with the delivery charge built in. Sunday dinner was coming so we wrapped our napkins around our necks. OK, we didn't but you get it. The chicken and ribs were in the same deep dish tray nearly submerged in BBQ sauce. Although the meat was tender enough, it was just too saucy and sweet for our taste. The sides definitely reflected the Sunday picnic-style approach you would expect, but neither really blew us away. Like I said, it probably would've been a more satisfying meal if we were dressed in our Sunday best and getting the food straight from the kitchen instead of reading the latest delay message from GrubHub. FOOD - 3 stars...a very saucy and too-sweet Sunday dinner AMBIANCE - n/a...it was a delivery SERVICE - 3.5 stars...everything seemed packaged right TOTAL - 3 stars...we may try the catfish or the crab cakes next time RELATED - Exploring Albany? Right in my own backyard. I can't believe I didn't know that this place ever existed. It's small on the inside and they do have a side door that they do take out orders had. But it is so small that it's so small that I almost missed it but the one thing that I did say was the word Cajun. I cannot miss eating Cajun food because it's part of my culture. So as I walked in the door I was a little bit taken aback taking a bag by how stylish it was inside. And the people that work there are very approachable peryou're approachable. This is where I met Linda, My server. Linda has a great personality and is a great person to have in the front to greet guests new and old. Normally when I see a sign that introduces introduces their cuisine style I'm a little hesitant as how authentic it will taste paste. When I put up the word Cajun all I could think of is it's probably Cajun-ish. I was wrong. They have captured the spirit and flavor of the South. They don't claim it they prove it. I ordered the ribs junior, And I must say if these were the junior ribs oh my gosh oh my gosh they were 4 ribs with or ridge with lots of meat on them. It was so hot outside I definitely had to have ice tea with this. As part of the lunch special the barbecue junior ribs come with potato salad. And the fried oak road was delicious. While I was waiting for my order I made sure to look over the menu to see what I was going to have the next time I came in. I finished it all off with their Flora's famous peach cobbler. I got all of this as take out but I waited inside for it because they were open. I was just in a hurry and couldn't wait to get home and heat it up and eat it up. I just happened to accidentally put a big slab ice cream on top of that hot peach cobbler which I might add the use pineapple for flavor and it is well what a beautiful marriage that was. I have to tell you that some of the best barbecue I've had in the East Bay so far and I've tried a few places.I'm excited to go back and see if there's jumbalaya or shrimp and grits or anything they have on the menu like the fried biographics are as good as everything else I had was. Thank you Linda for making my 1st visit to your restaurant a memorable one that is positive and we'll be talked about.

Excellent food & excellent service! My waiter was so patient, sweet, & kind! Curtis was also a treat to have! Everyone was so hospitable, and the food was affordable, flavorful, & scrumptious! You guys gotta come! The restaurant is very clean, with a very appropriate and soulful style of music playing! Don't forget dessert!

This is the front of Lizzie's minus the three tables with umbrellas that I didn't shoot at respect for people's privacy

The only thing better than the service is the food!!! Immediately I was transformed to my grandmotherd kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. Delicious aromas and friendly voices all around. My fried catfish was perfect my and it came right out of the pan, hot af ( that's a good thing). Potato salad was fire and so was the spicy cabbage!!! My only complaint and I mean my only complaint is that there wasn't more food and that's not because they're not generous it's just to say that I'm greedy!!! Come see these people they will appreciate you and you will definitely appreciate them back.

I really wanted to like the spot but hygiene here is poor. Oily fingerprints all over my plate, broken oily dressing bowl. Dirt or black pepper on the tomatoes? Staff was kind, but they could do better.

We were wondering when is this was gonna open all spring; and then covid hit. I was a bit skeptical because the inside was very tastefully decorated. Scary because being in Albany and on Solano, screams fancy, pricy and maybe average. Then one day in daily trip up or down Solano, we saw chairs... wait a person coming out... sweet they are open... we will have to try it sometime! Book marked! Today after zooming all day for work, I realized I never ate... all freaking day!!! So opened yelp went to book marks read a couple of reviews... good enough called and ordered wayyyyyy too much. hot links dinner side Mac salad (links were solid spicy and the BBQ sauce was tangy.) Crab cakes (3 perfect fluffy fried battered patties. Was a little disappointed because instead of tater salad they gave me more Mac salad- but it was great so I'm not mad at ya) Jambalaya with side of cabbage (jambalaya was spot on big hunks of chicken, andouille, plump shrimp.didn't add any salt or pepper to anything. The cabbage also had onion bell peppers and andouille... a meal in its own right. And the last side Cboys Mac n cheese ( I dug in and had to get the iPhone out to video that cheese tho!!!) Showed up ten minutes after ordering. It was ready! I wound up chatting quite a bit with Lizzie and her helper (sorry bro I forgot your name even tho you gave me a sprite and a bottled water for the first time visit) You see, they have brunch too and I saw shrimp n grits and the sound was audible of my eyes bugging out of my head. Lizzy said "oh yeah man we ain't playin! " Then she mentioned they are planning to put muffuletta on the menu as soon as they figure out the olive tapenade recipe. They got peeps "workin on it still down in Nawlins. " Too bad we already ordered our Cajun turkey from Popeyes... other wise.... Supporting black owned, local business and not having to get on a plane to get good home cooked Cajun! Yeah buddy! rear back...and slap yo mama!

I order the rib plate $15 and side of potato salad and side of baked beans $6 and peach cobbler $$$ The ribs were uncooked and tough as a shoe. The beans were unseasoned and watery. Potato salad was full of mustard. The peach cobbler look like peaches right out the can.

Very small sides containers with the Two-Way order. Thumb for scale, not a thumbs up! Lol

But this place completely changed that for me. Their mac and cheese comes out hot, steamy, and loaded with flavor, comfort food turned into something way more exciting. What really stands out is how creative the combinations are; it's not just cheese and pasta, it's layers of texture and bold flavor that keep me coming back. The buffalo chicken mac is a standout. It arrives with this crispy, golden breadcrumb topping that adds the perfect crunch. Pro tip, if you're getting it for takeout or delivery, the steam softens the topping in the container, so you miss out on that contrast. It's definitely best enjoyed fresh, in person, when that crunch is at its peak. Then there's the elote mac, which brings a totally different vibe. The bits of corn add little pops of sweetness throughout, and the slices of lemon on top are a game changer. A quick squeeze cuts through the richness of the cheese and oil, balancing everything out in a really satisfying way. I'm lactose intolerant, and that should be a dealbreaker here, but this is one of those rare exceptions where I'm willing to deal with the consequences.

But I'm so glad I was finally introduced to it. The staff greet you promptly when you enter and you can even watch them work effortlessly together in the open prep-station behind the counter. They have a gorgeous display of deli items, wines, cheeses, cold sides, and even some cute candles & house made croutons. They've got everything you would need for an elevated picnic or even a barbecue with the family. They have an intriguing selection of house made sausages-- the Chicken Tikka Masala sausage caught my eye and I can't wait to try it. They also sell whole smoked quail that are seasoned heavily yet each bite has just the right amount of smokiness, spices, and salt. Their hot food items and sandwiches are perfect for a quick lunch during your break from work or on your way home. There are also a few counter seats if you want to enjoy your meal there. So far I've tried the smoked quail, the Muffaletta sandwich, and their green lentil soup with chicken + veg. The sandwich was filled to the brim and each bite was a flavor bomb. The lentil soup was very comforting & paired well with the smoked quail. I'm looking forward to trying everything they have to offer.
