I've only came here for getting bread and other Chinese pastries and I find them to be okay. They don't have a big variety and the breads aren't the best, especially since there are so many better bakeries in Main Street but they still have the typical buns that are decent. My go to is the pineapple bun with red bean inside. The bun was fluffy and there was a good amount of red bean but it wasn't the type of red bean that I liked. Lately I find myself coming to 88 more because of their rice rolls w/ peanut sauce and fish balls. A staple breakfast choice of the Chinese culture, I literally lived on this as a kid growing up. Calling ahead is advised, so that you can come pick up and just go. They will give you an order number on the phone, just be sure to remember it. I've read many good reviews for their braised pork over rice. I was in the area and decided to try it. I was pretty disappointed. Got the spicy salted pork chop over rice which came out to $9.50. If I had one word to describe the food, that word would be alright. Way too much rice and three pieces of pork chop for almost ten dollars is a hard sell. I have eaten here previously in the past and enjoyed their baked rice selection. This is my go to spot for HK style hot milk tea. (not the kind you get bubble). I like 88 Canteen compared to their competitors as they seem cleaner and staff is pretty quick. My son also enjoyed the toasted ham/egg sandwiches. I noticed they use 2 eggs on their sandwiches and the ham is good portion. Sorry but if people have to complain about a restaurant with avg dish costing 5-6$, then maybe they should just dine at Four Seasons or the likes. Little cafe located in Flushing ny. I usually go there for their morning special ( awesome congee with fried Chinese bread). Try it and you won't be disappointed. Fresh bakery section with variety of Taiwanese style bread and and cakes. My favorite is the cheap raisin bread. You can also get variety of teas, slush and and fresh juices. Back again for another Birthday Cake for my son this time. We ordered the Puffer Fish in Blue and picked it up the day of as we were heading home. This is a nice place for a quick bite to eat. It's not a fancy place but it provides all the basic amenities you'd need with good food, tasty desserts, a cup of tea or coffee and the special cake for that event or party you are going to or holding for someone. The times I've been there which has been from when they first opened to just recently a week or two back I'd say they have good customer service, They are polite and even though there are a ton of people at peak times they are patient and make sure you get what you want. I have to say that reading some of the other reviews (some that are poor) I've got to chime in on it that sometimes people have a bad day and if you are kind in how you deal with the situation actually they often get into a better mood. The short critiques about the food I wonder at times having over heard patrons at various establishments harp on something - at times it seems they like something a particular way and complain when it's not like the place they like it best at. I take the food for what it is and that this establishments take on the dishes they serve here are on par with most average and above average establishments. For cakes I say they have a light airy cake assortment with light creme and fruit filling along with custards the many times I've ordered a cake from them specially designed. The basic pastries are are also on par with most places and a delicious. Most dishes they offer are also yummy, but they do have their own take on stuff. I've had several of their dishes over rice and in particular enjoy all of them. In ending, this is not a dine in joint really as it's a quick bite to eat with limited seating. It gets the job done and offers an alternative to the other restaurants South of their location. The only comparable one would be the tea shop on the next block on the corner South on the same side. They main reason to go here over that place would be for the cakes and especially the specialty cakes which you can order out of a book with various designs as I've mentioned. Love this place. I come here for lunch often and always get there lunch specials. Most of their rice lunch specials come with a delicious cup of the soup of the day. Chicken curry rice is excellent. So if there fish fillet with tofu. There oven baked rice/noodle dishes are good too. So is there stir fried noodles. Actually.. everything is pretty solid. My wife really likes the flavor of there noodle soup and they go out of their way to make it spicier for her because she likes really high heat levels in her meals. Locally owned and operated place so the owner is always there with her workers in the morning and lunch shifts. Only thing preventing five stars is that they do get really really slow during lunch hours on weekends. This place is amazing depending on what you get. Big recommendation for the fried pork chop bun which is easily the best one in all of Flushing. It may take awhile to get but it's worth it to taste the freshly fried pork chop over the toasted, buttery brioche bun. Rude racist assholes. I went ONCE and I waited on an empty line for 5-10 minutes while the cashiers stared at me, and just took the Asian customers BEHIND me (I was first in line) instead. Is it because I'm not Asian, that they think it's okay to treat me like I'm less than them? I was born here, been here all my life, but they looked at me like I was some sort of weird monster that didn't belong. When they finally served me, I asked for spaghetti with TOMATO sauce and I got meat sauce. Told them it's wrong, they said "no, you said meat." I said I asked for tomato.
