This bakery is fantastic! A complete and pleasant surprise we found in the North Cascades area. Its located in a the quant little town called Concrete. We came in just looking for coffee, with little expectations, but it blew us away. Traveling from Sacramento, CA to Canada & through kismet found this bakery/cafe! My 11 year old daughter has celiac and traveling is a B%$ to say the least what with planning ahead, packing all your food, rarely getting to try the local fare, no spontaneity ... The whole family did a little dance when we discovered 5b's! We got to actually eat out, eat GOOD food, not explain what gluten is, not have to ask about cross contamination and wait for the eye-roll..... Although we try to shelter my daughter a bit from the emotions around food, I know she gets down when she knows WE can just go anywhere and grab anything and it is all down to her disease that OUR habits have had to change. She gets JOYFUL when she finds a place like this (and we do too). The food was amazing - sandwiches, calzone, pot pies...nourishing, full of flavor and satisfying. Of course the soft (not cardboard) spicy, ginger cookies were the BOMB! The retro/diner/eclectic design was comfortable and fun to hang out in....did I mention great coffee? The server was friendly and outgoing - lots of smiles. What more could you ask for?! (I would get some sandwich boards on the highway in both directions though with GLUTEN FREE BAKERY/CAFE in big letters) I never would have found the bakery except for the fact that I 'happened' to see a small local newspaper when we got stuck in Burlington for two nights with a broken down car. When we got fixed up we hightailed it for 5b's so we could get lunch before we continued on our trip. Killer food and good smoothies. I love this place. The first time I stepped foot into 5 B's I was like, what the hell is this place doing in CONCRETE, WA??? If you've ever been to Concrete, then you'll know what I'm talking about. It's the kind of town where you can see a domestic dispute between a 6 year old and his 18 year old mother. Any who, this bakery is outstanding and thank God they are here. I don't know what I would do without them. The one item that I have tried that wasn't very good was the bagel dog. Highly recommended. All their fresh baked gluten free foods are better than you can imagine. The interior is very nice with many local things to look at and interesting items to buy. Yes, there exists a 5 star joint in Concrete, WA. I was just as surprised as you, driving west away from the North Cascades, and looked up a place on yelp in the near by area. It was a cute little cafe/bakery with lots of homemade goodies. I opted for a grilled cheese and a cup of their soup du jour (chili). I do adore this place. The food is great and their venue is bright and clean and cozy. The only suggestion/criticism that I have is they need to step up on their organization. I went this past Sunday morning for a quick pastry and coffee. Because it was so busy, I waited almost 15 minutes for my coffee. If they know they are going to be busy (and they should know, by now) then they should make sure that there is someone, always, manned at the coffee and tea station so that orders aren't getting so backed up that they don't know who ordered what and how. read more

This place is the best thing that has happened to Concrete since that nasty old building in downtown burned to the ground. The food is fantastic! Just off the highway in Concrete, (wich isnt a big deal, as Concrete is tiny) the bakery is located across the street from the post office. Old fashioned sodas, espresso, shakes and smoothies too! Went there last week. The desserts were yummy but we got some quiche and didn't like it at all. Tasted funny. Also didn't like the idea of having the desserts in the same cabinet as the other foods. They should be kept separate so the flavors don't mix. read more

I was so excited to come here, my husband is gluten free so I thought this would be the perfect breakfast spot. I would like to start out by saying the food was great. The service was not. I was extremely disappointed. I went to the counter and ordered our food, the person behind the counter explained to me that our food would be brought to us because we decided to sit outside. We waited for our food for an hour and half in total. Watching many people come in and then leave, half way through our wait we asked and they said "it should be up soon" and 15mins later still nothing! My husband went to the counter a second time and asked about it....the answer then was " oh my gosh your order never printed in the back".....wait WHAT!?! We had asked about our food before...and no mention of that came up. I'm mostly disappointed that we were just forgotten sitting at a table, not one employee cared or even seemed overly concerned at the amount of time we waited. There was no apologize, just an employee telling us that this happens a lot. Moral of the story....make sure your order goes through and if you have been waiting awhile, have them actually check in the kitchen for your food. read more

I made a last minute decision to come here after seeing signs while driving through Concrete, coming back from camping. I was in 5b's all of about 10 minutes max, which was enough time to see their selection is AMAZING, the staff was friendly, but not overbearing, the coffee was good...and the food. The food. I sampled the lemon cupcake and raspberry coffee cake. The cupcake....oh my...amazing. The coffee cake was good too. I had the Raisin Bran Orange muffin-flavorful, moist, and delicious down to the last bite. And the Mountain Trail cookie....I don't recall what was in it, I think it was vegan, and it was amazing.....I think I paid $8 for a cup of coffee, the muffin, cookie and tip. if you happen to see the sign driving by...do yourself a favor a stop in. We stopped at this bakery on a whim on our way across 20, and I'm glad that we did. The place was spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. The staff was courteous, professional and enthusiastic about their food. The food itself was delicious. We had a grilled cheese sandwich and a lemon bar, which were both very yummy. The only place I feel completely relaxed ordering anything on the menu. EVERYTHING is gluten free! I love the waffle sandwich, or the taco soup or the cinnamon rolls. This has got to be the best place in town to find an excellent meal. Initially we thought that it wasn't much more than a bakery, so were going to have breakfast elsewhere. Lucky for us there was nothing else open in the area, since many close down for the winter. We were treated to an excellent breakfast, with many options to choose from. Very friendly lady who (I think) was the owner stopped over and chatted with us. Everything we ordered was top notch and we would most definitely eat here again if we were to ever pass through this tiny town. TWO THUMBS UP!! My friend and I stopped by the 5b's Bakery last Friday on our way up to the Seattle City Light tour. Both of us ordered the hash and eggs and it was a big disappointment. It was basically seasoned diced potatoes with a few (very few) bits of dried out beef. My eggs ordered sunny side up were delivered over medium. So much for home cooking. A can of Nalley's corned beef hash is a much better alternative. read more

Well, My wife and I were on a road trip to Nehalem when we thought to stop in Concrete for a snack and a break from driving. the places on Hiway 20 did not look very inviting. so we thought to turn off and look to see what "downtown" Concrete had to offer. heading through town we came across a place that looked inviting called "5 b's bakery" we walked in and were warmly greeted by the nice lady's there. they asked if we had been there before, by that time I saw the baked goods in the display case and was thinking "..HHmm , lunch and baked goods..!" anyway we sat down and went over the menu. Not a huge selection like one would find at a chain style eatery. everything on their menu sounded good. My wife and I choose the chicken pot pie. MY WORD! It was Delicious! I asked for a lemon lime soda, I was expecting Sprite , 7up or something like that, I was presented with a carbonated Lemon and Lime Juice drink, That too was really good. I should have been paying more attention, they make their own soda here , no Coke or Pepsi products that I could see. The place was clean , all the floor staff there was attentive ,without being pests, and asked if we needed anything else and was everything OK. My Wife calls the place "Cute". After our meal we bought some of their baked good. when we got home I could not wait and started snacking on some of the fabulous treats we bought from their baked goods case. they were also very tasty! (now I have to go back and get more) Trust me, Take a drive , enjoy the fall colours and stop in to the "5 b's Bakery" in Concrete. in my mind it is worth the trip. It's a well intentioned and very friendly place but our lunch was simply not good. They didn't have tomatoes for BLTs. The grilled cheese sandwiches were lukewarm with unmelted cheese and an unwelcome surprise layer of honey mustard/Mayo. The chicken salad was slathered in Mayo too. The cookies were the most pleasant surprise of the meal. Slow service, water glasses were dirty too. Hate writing this because the people are so nice and the place is very charming. But we come to eat and I suspect the sweets here are far better than the lunches. read more
