I was so excited to come here, my husband is gluten free so I thought this would be the perfect breakfast spot. I would like to start out by saying the food was great. The service was not. I was extremely disappointed. I went to the counter and ordered our food, the person behind the counter explained to me that our food would be brought to us because we decided to sit outside. We waited for our food for an hour and half in total. Watching many people come in and then leave, half way through our wait we asked and they said "it should be up soon" and 15mins later still nothing! My husband went to the counter a second time and asked about it....the answer then was " oh my gosh your order never printed in the back".....wait WHAT!?! We had asked about our food before...and no mention of that came up. I'm mostly disappointed that we were just forgotten sitting at a table, not one employee cared or even seemed overly concerned at the amount of time we waited. There was no apologize, just an employee telling us that this happens a lot. Moral of the story....make sure your order goes through and if you have been waiting awhile, have them actually check in the kitchen for your food. read more

I would give 10 stars if allowed! We are GF devotees, weekend visitors to the upper Skagit and 5Bs is a beloved tradition. Friendly, great people own and operate. My friend and I stopped by the 5b's Bakery last Friday on our way up to the Seattle City Light tour. Both of us ordered the hash and eggs and it was a big disappointment. It was basically seasoned diced potatoes with a few (very few) bits of dried out beef. My eggs ordered sunny side up were delivered over medium. So much for home cooking. A can of Nalley's corned beef hash is a much better alternative. read more

Well, My wife and I were on a road trip to Nehalem when we thought to stop in Concrete for a snack and a break from driving. the places on Hiway 20 did not look very inviting. so we thought to turn off and look to see what "downtown" Concrete had to offer. heading through town we came across a place that looked inviting called "5 b's bakery" we walked in and were warmly greeted by the nice lady's there. they asked if we had been there before, by that time I saw the baked goods in the display case and was thinking "..HHmm , lunch and baked goods..!" anyway we sat down and went over the menu. Not a huge selection like one would find at a chain style eatery. everything on their menu sounded good. My wife and I choose the chicken pot pie. MY WORD! It was Delicious! I asked for a lemon lime soda, I was expecting Sprite , 7up or something like that, I was presented with a carbonated Lemon and Lime Juice drink, That too was really good. I should have been paying more attention, they make their own soda here , no Coke or Pepsi products that I could see. The place was clean , all the floor staff there was attentive ,without being pests, and asked if we needed anything else and was everything OK. My Wife calls the place "Cute". After our meal we bought some of their baked good. when we got home I could not wait and started snacking on some of the fabulous treats we bought from their baked goods case. they were also very tasty! (now I have to go back and get more) Trust me, Take a drive , enjoy the fall colours and stop in to the "5 b's Bakery" in Concrete. in my mind it is worth the trip. This is such a cute little bakery restaurant. Its got a small town hospitality feel. Everything is made in the back. Nothing shipped in. They have a little bit of everything for everyone. They had two favorites of mine! They had a frozen iced BLENDED mocha. Yes, made in a blender! None of that overly sweetened powdered crap. Just a nice helping of fresh local honey to sweeten it. The glass was nice and big n tall too :) The next really super delicious thing they had- if you love pot pies, you will leave craving for more of this. I had a chicken pot pie and i shared. I told SO to get his own! They're $6 each but so worth it. You can get it to go but like i did, have them serve you a nicely warmed hot pot pie in a hot bowl on a hot plate. Yum-mmm-mmm! The crust, buttery, flaky, crumbly, fresh, not hard. The filling was magic. Both the meat and the veggies were tender, flavorful, delicious! How did they do that without gravy oozing out of it like other places? Their unique recipe is a winner! I was surprised to discover that the filling had some lima beans. Yes lima beans. I grew up hating them cause noone cooked them right so they'd taste hard and outta place. This was a first that i enjoyed them! Told you it was magic! read more

It's a well intentioned and very friendly place but our lunch was simply not good. They didn't have tomatoes for BLTs. The grilled cheese sandwiches were lukewarm with unmelted cheese and an unwelcome surprise layer of honey mustard/Mayo. The chicken salad was slathered in Mayo too. The cookies were the most pleasant surprise of the meal. Slow service, water glasses were dirty too. Hate writing this because the people are so nice and the place is very charming. But we come to eat and I suspect the sweets here are far better than the lunches. read more

Found this bakery /cafe by accident it was such a delight! My family is mostly gluten free and we were so excited to learn that this place is 100% gf. The crazy part is usually when we eat out at such places we say , well that was ok for gluten free. But the truth is the owner and staff have done an amazing job with recipes that if you did not know it was gf actually one customer overheard me talking to the owner , Em - and she said what do you mean this place is gluten free? We were looking for a place to eat breakfast in this small town and we didn't expect much. We stepped into 5b's bakery and were amazed by the wide selection of the pastries and sandwiches. We ordered cappuccinos and hot chocolates which were delightful. The place is very nicely decorated in a 40's bakery theme, and while we were waiting for our food we learned that the whole menu is made from scratch and gluten free. We were a little worried that the food wouldn't be as tasty but when we got the food we were amazed, the food was absolutely delicious. While you eat you don't even notice the gluten free feature. This bakery is very welcoming and esthetic and is a perfect place for breakfast or lunch. read more

I'll join the three stars. I find the quality of food very good and presentation very pleasing, but the fare is a substitute for the "real thing". In other words the products they use (rice flour etc.) instead of the standard wheat flour, is noticeable to a moderately fine palette and so for me wasn't as enjoyable as the real thing. It's surprisingly expensive, but then that's typical for almost all food that caters to special dietary needs. I wish there was something for those of us who can tolerate gluten, as this place is charming, clean and offers a higher quality, though sometimes a little bland, food. Nothing else in Concrete offers a healthful variety like 5b's. There are a couple of restaurants that seem to come and go with mediocre food and atmosphere and there's a GREAT pizza place and Their hamburger stop is also very good, but for a real meal and something more substantial, 5b's is about it. For those who are taken back by the "unfriendliness", understand this is Concrete and part of the personality (sorry Concrete, but it's true). There are a few exceptions, but standoffishness is part of their culture. I lived their 15 years and always felt on the fringe. Not the right venue to give dozens of examples. I was told early on by a man who had been there more than 30 years that I would always be the outsider and I was. There are some good people, but most like to be left alone; they've all grown up together, married each other; their kids grow up together, marry each other......they go back generations. Enjoy the food and restaurant but socially they play by different rules and you will often notice it. read more

This is such a delightful place. I have been there many times and each time I get astonishing customer service and food. This bakery has truly mastered gluten free. The food is always fresh and the taste is out if this world. They have breakfast and lunch options. My favorite is the biscuits and gravy for breakfast and the grilled ham and cheese for lunch. They also have breads, pizza crusts, and other baked goods for sale. I am blown away that food this good is gluten free. read more

In winter along Hwy 20 there are not a lot of choices for breakfast. Delighted to find 5b's! I had the corned beef hash handmade with real white and sweet potato pieces on two mornings. A moderate sized portion, not huge plus doggy bag. English breakfast tea was brewed from leaves in a pot. Nice staff with intermittent arrival of local customers, always a good sign. My husband and I just stopped in for a coffee break on our way out of the Cascades. The service was top-notch and there were plenty of pastry options. What we chose to eat and drink was delicious. The ambiance is adorable, we had a nice little down time just chilling out together. A bit pricey for what we got, though, so I probably wouldn't come here regularly if I lived in that area, but hey, we were on vacation and it was a lovely interlude! read more

Imagine a dreary day and a somewhat gloomy mission: spreading late mother-in-law's ashes off a bridge in Concrete, when there are eagles. Long drive in church bus from Seattle and almost no eagles. Once there was a swoop the mood changed and Yelp led us to 5b's, the Skagit Eagle Festival and four talented high school jazz band players. Wait staff were amazing. Eight? We'll set you up. When they delivered the food they just shouted it out. Everything was delicious. The youth pastor ended up buying gluten-free bread and pastries. One brother broke a sweat from the big bowl of chili and the regular bowls would have qualified as "larges" in Seattle. And the pecan roll, warm and delicious, allowing us to warm up, talk between song breaks and share our fondest memories in an unexpectedly outstanding setting. read more

So surprised to find a dedicated GF bakery in Concrete. The joy of walking in and being able to select ANYTHING on the menu, from bread to waffles to muffins, scones, cheesecake, cinnamon rolls...I was ecstatic. Staff are friendly and shop is cute. The food, service, and decor here are Amazing! We stopped in yesterday and I ended up buying one of almost everything. Of. Everything I've tried so far has been delicious! Flavorful, chewy bagels, lemon bars with flaky crust and a bright lemon zing, spicy bagel dog, bran muffin with apples and raisins, doughnut holes, peanut butter thumbprint cookie, and last but not least blueberry cheesecake. I am gluten intolerant and was overjoyed to go into a DEDICATED gluten free bakery, but the best part is that all of my gluten eating family members loved the food as much as I did! ( a first for me) my sister and dad both got the blueberry cheesecake and said it had the best texture of any cheesecake they'd ever had, not rubbery, but very creamy. My sister also picked up a very cool birch bird feeder (sorry, no pictures) by a local artist too. This is one place you shouldn't pass up, and is actually worth making a specific drive for.
