My fiancé took me here as a surprise and it was such a cute little bakery! I took advantage of the day old cookies and got myself a snickerdoodle, my partner went with a panini and even though I'm not a sandwich gal I was very impressed! The staff was very kind to us while we took our time to order and did not make us feel rushed or annoying. Love this place, will be coming back!

I've seen posts on Facebook about this place for a while but never been until today. We got a brownie with frosting and an Oreo on top, 3 cookies and a decorated sugar cookie. The brownie was so fudgey that it was almost not even a brownie! If you are having an intense desire for some super fudgey goodness, get this brownie! The oatmeal raisin cookie is also to die for!

Calico Cupboard is one of those places that you NEED to go to when you're in town…read more When you get there, you just sign in yourself at the stand which is a good system so no one has to check you in when they're already pretty busy. While you're waiting you can go to the shop down the stairs or go to the dessert area right next to the waiting area to get some great desserts. Last time i was there I saw frosted cream cheese sugar cookies, and pies, and more. When you get seated there are so many great food options, lots of options, same with drinks. They are only open until 3:30 pm so be sure to manage time well. And don't expect an empty place, it's usually populated. Tight space, so scoot in those chairs as far as you can. Staff were laid back, and nice. When they're busy make sure to be patient with the staff, they're dealing with tons of other orders as well.

We had breakfast there last Wednesday morning, and from the moment we arrived, it felt special. The outside is adorable, but somehow the inside is even more charming. There's such a warm, welcoming energy the second you walk in. Off to the side is their incredible shop, "Re-Feather Your Nest," filled with thousands of unique and beautiful items--it honestly feels like a destination all on its own. To the left when you enter, you're greeted by their bakery cases, and wow--there are more options than most bakeries I've ever seen. Everything looked amazing, and we were lucky enough to be seated right away (always a win!). The restaurant itself is two stories, and our table overlooked the store below, which made the whole experience even more fun. We started with their famous cinnamon roll, fresh coffee (with the cutest little design on top!), and freshly squeezed grapefruit juice--which was incredibly refreshing. For breakfast, I ordered the Calico Benedict on a homemade English muffin with corned beef--so good! And the country-style potatoes? Easily some of the best I've ever had. I couldn't even finish them and happily took the rest home...they were just as delicious the next day. My husband ordered the Breakfast Sampler with sausage and loved every bite as well. What really stood out, beyond the food, was how clean everything was and how genuinely happy the staff seemed. You can tell they enjoy working there, and that makes such a difference. After breakfast, we wandered through the gift shop and found so many unique treasures--big and small. I actually visited Magnolia in Waco, Texas a couple of months ago, and honestly, this is the kind of charming, personality-filled place that would fit right in there (and maybe even outshine it!). If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend stopping by--even if it's just to browse the shop. It's one of those rare places that truly has it all. A must-visit!

I have had Water Tank Bakery in Burlington bookmarked for awhile and admit being late to the party, so to speak. But this time coming back south from Edison, Bow, Bellingham and Sedro Wooley, I made it a point to visit on 3/28/26. It is located by the Port of Skagit County, with the regional airport, other commercial businesses, and serendipitously next door to Cairnspring Mills. Look for the Fresh Bread signage starting at Higgins Airport Way that shortly leads you to the retail window. The daily offerings are listed on the business website, as well as, the magnet board located below the retail window. After a brief wait, it was my turn and enjoyed my brief conversation with the founder, owner, and head artisan baker, Rachael Grace Sobczak. She mentioned that majority of the baked goods are from a sourdough bread starter and uses local flours from Cairnspring Mills (next door) and Chimacum Valley Grainery (Olympic Peninsula). From the website, it was great to learn that she baked for a decade at Breadfarm in Edison. She was also involved in her graduate studies as a dietician and concurrently with other community projects. A pandemic pivot started the journey to create the successful Water Tank Bakery. I purchased a four pack of roasted garlic parmesan rolls, a four pack of coffee toffee chocolate sandwich cookies, and two lemon raspberry cream cheese polish buns. All of these were outstanding! Water Tank Bakery baked goods are also available via other retailers (listed on website) and at the year round University District Farmers Market in Seattle on Saturdays 9am to 2pm. I was told, however, there's better availability and variety visiting the retail window in Burlington. Worthy detour!

I just love businesses like this. Bootstrappy, hard-working entrepreneurs working out of commercial…read morespaces, making what they love, sharing their talent and passion, and selling local on the strength of their reputation. They sell their breads, cookies, pastries and other items (they do croutons for holiday stuffings and salads, for instance) out of a service window at their factory storefront. Yes, this means you stand in a line outside and wait your turn, and there is usually a line, rain or shine. My wife and I joke about it, referencing Jack Nicholson's line from the film "As Good As It Gets": "...we're not crazy. We're just people that like warm rolls..." And it's worth it. Fresh, sometimes still-warm (get there early) breads and confections, perfect shortbreads, brioche cinnamon buns, and those don't-miss "Bee-Sting Bars" - a layered bar of shortbread, honey, almond and coconut, perfect with coffee and very cravable. As with so many goods and services these days, the prices may raise an eyebrow or two...but it makes all the difference when the product is head-and-shoulders superior to anything one can get at a grocery. Buying from Water Tank Bakery exemplifies why being a locavore is so satisfying; finding purveyors of superior quality, within my community, and knowing my money stays local... just makes this exceptional food taste even better! Buying and eating local foods keeps small-town, rural areas from slipping into that fast-food strip-mall anonymity we see so often; a slow, bland, banal cancer that eats away at vibrant, creative, wholesome and vital communities like Skagit Valley. So, yeah, you bet: I'll see you in line!
