I've been here a few times over a few years, really packed on the weekends (usually a good sign) but in this case it really isn't as i want my coffee to be flowing and the waitresses to be attentive. the food itself. meh, i had typical fair and it wasn't really all that great, not what Sunday breakfast could be. no granted eggs toast and bacon are the index here and they are all suitable, but more than 3 stars for that? no way/ the home fries were yuk city, which is too too bad i guess you can do better than that, go sweet, maybe the fried dough basket i suppose, but also i guess you could eat a can of Crisco while your at it too. in closing, go, have fun with all of the old women talking smack about the places they go to peep leaves and what barefoot contessa would say of this place, if you catch my drift.................... read more

Yesss this place gives me life! Really reasonably priced, large portions, friendly staff!! Prices are truly unbeatable. Beware that this place will always have a wait though so plan accordingly! I got the eggs benedict corned beef hash and it was cooked to perfection and hit the spot. Will come back when craving a really good brunch. I love this place. My family has been going to the Diner for years. I almost exclusively order the French Toast with butter (whipped) and powdered sugar. My sister and I usually split a coffee frappe (it comes in two tall glasses, topped with whipped cream if you are so inclined, which I am). The hot chocolate is also pretty good. The French Toast comes as six half-slices. The sausage links are good, the home fries great, and the omelets very very tasty. I opt for a western omelet, or sausage and American cheese. The servers aren't always friendly but as we've gone over the years they're generally polite to us. It's easy to see that there's a familial kind of bond with the regulars. It's inexpensive, the food comes out very fast. Depending on the time of day you might have to wait, but the line moves pretty quickly. It's cash only, tip at the table and pay at the front. You can cut the line to sit at the counter but if you want a table / booth you won't be seated until your whole party is there. My dad's visiting this week and I'll be sure to make time so we can go. My two and a half year old nephew loves the pancakes and French toast, and especially likes the whipped cream in the frappe. read more

A business associate and I visited the 50s Diner this AM. After approximately 45 minutes, a waitstaff, (not ours), walked over, asked us if we were done, then promptly told us there are other people waiting, and to leave. As she was walking to the entrance, she turned around to us, (we were still in the booth), and yelled; "Appreciate the courtesy". There were 2 people waiting, and there were open tables for two. There is no other side to the story, nor is there any sensationalism. We are professionals, sitting quietly, with the goal of discussing business matters. As an FYI, our waitstaff, a younger woman with an accent, is always first-class. Its too bad, she is losing a customer, along with others we network with. We won't be returning. read more

The 50's diner is a tradition with my first born son, Mikah and I. We get up early on his birthday, while his 4 younger siblings are still sleeping soundly. We would always go to the 50's Diner. We get to enjoy a rare quiet breakfast, where the most of the waitress' know us by sight. We missed the July date, but will pick a day to sneak away to the 50's diner, before my son goes off to his Sophomore year in College. Never Change! read more

Driving around on a Tuesday morning, unfamiliar with the area. Somehow I end up in front of the 50s diner, hidden between mall, Costco, and light industrial. The corned beef hash is awesome, almost burned to a crisp, but just not quite. The banter between the staff and the regulars is great background. Worth trying to find. Bring cash. read more

Drive right past this dump! I was meeting my family for breakfast before a funeral. Even though the dingy place was fairly empty the waitress would not seat us until the ENTIRE party was present. I explained that the 2 others were en route and was told unless I ordered for them as well we couldn't be seated- i couldn't even order a cup of coffee unless EVERYONE was present. The gloomy , faded so called 50's decor was not enticing enough for me to wait nor was the nauseating aroma of burnt cheese emanating from the kitchen. We've been coming here for years and just love this little place. The french toast is amazing, kids love the pancakes and milkshakes. Expect the wait out in the rain and snow if you want to eat here. The home fries are always soggy and under cooked. When they do manage to cook it, they burn the home fries and it's hard like a rock. Food is low quality. Corned beef hash are made from canned corned beef hash that you could find at stop and shop. They won't seat you until everyone is present. Expect to stand there like a fool and see everyone get seated before you, just because one person from your group is not present. Furniture is outdated. The pies on display have mold. The entrance to this restaurant greets you with a sign saying "Thank You For Being A Veteran". Much like Americas failure again and again to live up to the lofty goal of caring for our veterans, this restaurant failed its lofty goal of providing a decent experience. Have been wanting to try this place because of the weekend lines out the door. I was the front of the line 4 empty tables and I got offered no set at a table. So what does poor service get from a potential new and loyal customer. Nothing, no money, no return trip, no recommendations, no family visitors, nothing. Fun diner that serves breakfast all day. Buttermilk pancakes with whipped butter were very good. Homemade hash with eggs, potatoes and toast was ok, hash was bland. 50's Diner is a very popular casual breakfast and lunch joint. They certainly have their regular customers and the long lines to get just through the door shows that many enjoy the food here. I've only come for breakfast and have enjoyed my meal a number of times. The omelets are tasty. The fresh muffins are also good and big enough to share. The hash with poached eggs on top is particularly good in my opinion. It's a prime rib hash with plenty of flavor. The pancakes here are HUGE and prepared perfectly. Like most places, you have to ask for real maple syrup instead of the fake stuff. The coffee is really good here, free refills and I always ask for a to-go cup for the road. The service ranges from fine to friendly. They are efficient...food comes out fast and accurate. If they can find a way to save you some money, they help change your order so you don't pay extra. It's cash only and they do have an ATM machine in the restaurant. It's set up in a fun way in an old school telephone booth. Nice touch. 50's music and memorabilia set the tone. You don't exactly feel like you have time traveled but it's fun none the less. There is counter service for one or small groups. There are few big booths for large groups. YES YES YES I'm writing a bunch about Dedham b/c I have to go there tonight and pick up some crap at Costcos' which reminded me of all these places in Dedham that I have been meaning to review. The 50's Diner is the best, simply the best, greasy spoon south of JP. Be strategic about when you get there so you don't wreck your experience by waiting in line for an hour. Avoid after mass crowds on Sundays (for you lay people that means don't go between 9:45 and 1:30) if you can by trying to plan your trip for a mid Saturday morning or early Saturday/Sunday afternoon. Also, bring cash if my memory serves me there is no ATM or CC machine. On to the chow, classic, american diner grub but you can't beat it and they know how to do it right - they simply never f*ck it up on you. And the owner has a thing for serving top notch pie as well. My fav's here: french toast, chicken salad, bacon burger and their home fries. Oh and they have cherry and vanilla coke and kick ass shakes. read more

I had a turkey club, it was fine, completely average, if overpriced. My problem with this place is twofold: 1: The prices on the kids' menu are ludicrous for what you get. I ordered a PB&J for my son - he likes them separate - the peanut butter slice kept apart from the jelly slice. There was literally one smear of each, not even enough to fully coat the bread. For this and some chips they charge $5.85. Absurd. 2. Then I go to pay and notice there is a tiny little sign next to the register saying no checks or credit cards. Of course I have no cash on me and they direct me to the ATM machine they have inside the place, which of course charges me a $2 fee on top of my bank's fee. Where are we, the boonies? It's the city, start taking debit cards at least. But no, they'd rather rip us off for the extra fee they get when people don't realize they are cash-only. Take my advice, walk across the street and eat at the Whole Foods. You may have to serve yourself, but it'll be cheaper and much better quality. read more

Apparently a meal here is like a right of passage for people living in the area - To be accepted by the people of Dedham, Walpole and Westwood, one must have breakfast there. My lovely girlfriend lives around there so I obliged. To her credit, it didn't take much convincing. I was told that they had wonderful, fluffy and delicious chocolate chip pancakes. She had me at wonderful. We proceeded to go there on a Saturday morning and after parking right in front of the spot (they have a large, private lot right in front), we walked right up to the door, and the long line that trickled in front of it. Fortunately, there were only two of us and we didn't mind sitting at the counter which lead us to walk in after only waiting about fifteen seconds, cutting on front of everyone in the process. Suckers. The place is not too big but is packed, especially on weekends. Despite being packed, I had some more than decent elbow room and the place is designed to be rather roomy which is nice. The waitress walked right up to us, with a smile and within instants we got pancakes and large chocolate milks. Note to self, when someone is indicated as large, it's large. That glass of milk nearly filled me up - and that was before my pancakes arrived. But much like a Man vs. Food episode, I pigged out. The shame was worth it. I descended upon that stack of pancakes like Homer Simpsons eats donuts and within instants they had vanished from my plate and into my stomach. They were indeed as described: delicious. The prices are great, the variety of foods offered is great and best of all, it's fast, clean and friendly. This diner is awesome and there's no pretty neat, old-school America schwag hanging on the walls to admire as you fill yourself up with bacon, pancakes, and various other breakfast/brunch items. I'm sure that they have other items on the menu, but if you don't go there for breakfast than you're a sucker. My only regret was getting a large chocolate milk. I should have gone for the delicious-looking milkshakes instead. I shall return and investigate that in the future. Hopefully soon. read more

I don't just give five stars willy-nilly. But man, The 50's Diner is definitely deserving. I had to physically restrain myself after receiving the Fried Dough basket - first, because my breakfast companion was finishing giving her son a bottle and I had to save some for her, but second, because I didn't want to look like a fat lunatic with greasy lips and powdered sugar schmeared across my face. I may have looked like that anyway. The butter that comes with is a little salty and frankly, I didn't think the fried dough needed it. If I came and ordered it again, I would say you should ask for the butter on the side so you can portion control. I then followed that up with an attempt to eat slightly healthier and I ordered an egg white hash omelet. No toast. No potatoes. Just a plate of sliced tomatoes on the side. It was a perfect omelet. Perfect. Not overcooked and dry. The tomatoes on the side were still slightly under-ripe, but I ate them anyway. I really liked the hash and I didn't have any trouble with what others have mentioned. Hash never looks appetizing...so I wouldn't ever consider judging it on appearance alone. I thought it was good hash - tasted great. I didn't even salt the omelet so for me, there was plenty of flavor. Good service, my coffee cup was never empty. Two breakfasts plus the fried dough came to about $33.00. Worth it. Additionally, I had the opposite experience of some other reviewers on here...even though there was a pretty hefty line and my girlfriend and I definitely overstayed our welcome (probably a good 15 minutes after we paid the check)...we were NEVER pressured to leave our table. I've been here for breakfast twice and both times I have been very pleased. It's a cute place, hidden behind some of the big names at Legacy Place. You have to wait in line to get seated, and be warned, the line gets LONG. Anyway, I came here with my extended family and we were all thrilled with our breakfasts. I had the Veggie Omelet with broccoli, spinach, peppers, and onions, which came with homefries and toast. I found out the eggs and homefries are made with margarine, rather than butter, and I like that. Made me feel better about the giant plate of food I was about to eat. My omelet was absolutely stuffed with veggies. How often do you get an omelet and have like two pieces of the add-in? My brother got the corned beef hash with eggs and homefries. It was crispy and while he hoped that it would have a kick to it, it was good. He did, however, love the eggs. Overall great meal in a nice atmosphere and reasonable prices! read more

I heard some raving about this place from my mother, so we decided to go there for brunch one day before hitting the mall. There was a line there, as usual, because it's popular - apparently. So we finally got seated and we finally decided on what we wanted... only to have to wait 5 minutes for some inattentive waitress. Now I don't mind the wait that much, but how about some water after we sit down or ask us if we want something to drink? Perhaps it's because we were the only Asian there? I don't think I should play the race card yet, but everyone else's got service *shrugs* So I ordered a corned beef hash - let's see, burnt doesn't really describe it. Eggs were fine, and the dirty plastic cups were fine even with by my standards. I saw everyone else's giant plate of food and they looked great. Mine was just the bare minimum. Maybe I didn't ordered their famous whatever. Not that it was indicated anywhere on the menu, nor were we told by any of the staff... nor did they bother to smile or say good morning when the waitress came over. I get better service from the loud lady at my local NYC diner than I got at this joint. The food sucked, service blows, long wait time for nothing. Oh did I mentioned the inside doesn't even look that clean or appetizing? A couple of months ago I wandered down to Dedham during my quest for a place to live. After looking at a place, I asked the landlady if there was a good place to eat breakfast nearby. Her brother immediately piped up and said I HAD to go to The 50's Diner. Fortunately I had my GPS system with me, and I managed to make it through construction (boo!) and past police (eek!) to finally park in front of the diner. When I walked in, I had my misgivings. I am a proud Asian-American young woman, but sometimes walking into a place where everyone looks up and stares at you as you walk by can be daunting! However, the hostess was very friendly and immediately seated me in my table of choice (back corner next to the fire door o.o;) I asked for a recommendation, and she told me the corned beef hash was divine with poached eggs. So that's what I ordered. When the food came out, it was so delicious! The corned beef has was that right amount of greasy diner hot food and when it mixed with the runny eggs, and was piled on toast with a dollop of tabasco+ketchup....my mouth is watering just thinking about it! My coffee mug never stayed half-full for long as the hostess came by frequently to check up on me, and as busy as she was, she even stopped by to chat with me for a few minutes. When I mentioned that I was looking for a place to live, she said oh we have a regular whose sister is renting out. Turned out it was the place I'd just looked at! Looks can be deceiving, and it was certainly the case in my situation. Make it past the construction, past the regulars who resent outside interlopers, and park your butt in a back corner.
