The 50's Diner is the by far the best place for breakfast in this area, as evidenced by the ever present long wait lines, even on weekdays. Like other reviewers I would highly recommend the french toast, the omelets are great as well. The 50's Diner is consistently yummy and fast. And while it certainly does suck that they don't take plastic... I will bear the inconvenience of the ATM rather than deal with the crappy service and crappier food at the local IHOP. read more

Dear 50's Diner, I like you. Do you like me too? Y / N ? Fantastic atmosphere with great wall decorations. I especially like the old telephone booth that houses an ATM. The music is always awesome too, as it should be. Total A+ for ambiance/atmosphere/sticking with the theme. We were sad to learn the fried dough was only on weekends, but we finally made it back on a weekend to bask in the basket of glory. I wish there was cinnamon on them, but even without it this was some really delicious fried dough. The breakfast foods and sandwiches are always good. I feel like they have some sort of magic they use to cook the bacon. It is always perfect: a little crunchy, a little soft/juicy, a lot of awesome. I really liked this hidden gem in Dedham. It's a great alternative to the local IHOP and I'd say it's even better than IHOP. Friendly staff, tasty food, charming retro environment, and good location (near Legacy Place). I agree with everyone the 50s special is more than worth it! Plenty of food for a cheap price! Even the dishes are great. They're reminiscent of yester- year which I highly appreciated because thick mugs are hard to find these days. If you're looking for a good breakfast/brunch spot in the area I highly recommend you check this place out. And don't be deterred if there's a line because it moves fast! read more

I order the special, grilled Rachael" but nothing special about it. - store bought bread - bulk dressing - coleslaw was good - meet a little dry and not enough for my likening. As a not-senior-citizen, perhaps I don't qualify as the established clientele that 50's usually attracts, but their breakfast is too good to pass up. Even with limited transportation options, I make sure to make the trip up from West Roxbury once a month or so. While the Rox Diner in WR is very good, nothing holds a candle to the food at 50's. Simply magnificent. The eggs, the pancakes, the french toast, bacon, sausage, burgers, fried dough, hell even the drinks. You name it, and they've nailed it. Two drawbacks: Good luck trying to come here on a Saturday morning after 7:30. You will be waiting in line, but I happen to think it's worth it. Have realistic expectations. You don't get great food at a reasonable price from a very popular local diner on a Saturday morning without having to wait in line for 15 minutes. But that's that. The other drawback of course is the cash-only policy. I never carry cash so it is inconvenient to have to lose $2.00 from the ATM but once again, the quality is enough to supersede it. I do think the policy is outdated and should be changed, but it's not nearly enough for me to stop coming. Service is always great (with the right waitress, there's one or two eh ones) and I'll keep coming here until my heart gives out in a decade or so :) read more

CASH ONLY. Came here for a Sunday Brunch after a good night out with some friends. Although the line is long, you get seated very quickly. Although it serves IHOP quality food, it does have that ambiance of a local diner that's been in the neighborhood for a long time. I ordered the 50's Special Platter with the french toast. They probably have not really traveled that far from this location. 5 Stars is way, way off base. If you are in the area, it is a good fun place to stop at. The food is good and the coffee is hot. They make their own corned beef hash and there version of a Beignets, pronounced 'ben-yah' (dough-boy for the Rhode Islanders). So little cut pieces of fried dough. They also serve up some hefty pancakes. So for the reality check. It is not a Diner, it is a restaurant that has a counter. The made fresh corned beef hash is fairly blah. But, with salt, pepper and some Tabasco, you are all set. The fried dough was not too bad actually. It came with two gobs of butter and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Not quite a dough boy. I think someone took a trip to New Orleans and tried their hand at the beignets. Not too bad for a Yankee, but a bit over cooked. The pancakes were really large. We had some Blueberry ones. Must say they held back on the blueberry part. But once you slather on the butter and the syrup, it is in the end, just a pancake. They have real maple syrup, if you want to pay $2.00 for a couple of ounces. Lastly, they only take cash. I don't mind cash only places IF it is reasonably priced. Two breakfast meals, one cup of coffee and the fried dough $28.00. Not in my opinion if 'reasonable.' The service was good and the wait staff were great. I love the 50's Diner! Get there early for breakfast -- I think they are only open 7 am to 3 pm, and it can get crowded after 10. They have incredible breakfast deals, and great omelettes. If you still have room in your stomach and there is orange cake in the glass case, you MUST try it. It tastes like a super-moist version of the Hostess Orange Cupcakes, but much, much better. Their lunches are good too -- generous portions and cheap prices. Decor is all vintage signs, and it has an old (non-working) telephone booth in the back. read more

Came to the 50's diner on labor day Sunday and was greeted by a lengthy line of course...Not to worry, the line moves fast as this place is run like a well-oiled machine. We were a family of 6 and they seated us no problem. Coffee came promptly (and often) as did the chocolate milkshakes for the kids, yes I know chocolate milkshakes for breakfast probably not the best idea, but it was a special occasion. We ordered a variety of different items, my wife had the western omelet which was fluffy and perfect. Being that she is peculiar about her eggs they are doing something right. I had the 50's platter, which I have had here before, and they always get it right. Other's in our party were also very pleased with their meals. I had the 50's platter with yummy french toast with sliced bananas. The kids had the pancake breakfast as well as an order of kids scrambled eggs. Both came with your choice of breakfast meat (my kids chose bacon) and both looked like they could feed an adult. Right before we left, word got to my brother that we were at the 50's and so I had to place their takeout order....French toast, pancakes, egg sandwich, etc. Their breakfast came lickity-split! Just went on Sunday for breakfast. Love it!!! Whenever I would go to Whole Foods on weekend mornings, I would notice a line outside of this place. Although, I've had intentions of checking it out for sometime, I would somehow forget and end up at Ihop for breakfast instead. This past Sunday, I remembered, and boy am I glad I did. The line wasn't too bad. We waited about 10 minutes or so to get in. (I would wait longer for good food and service). This place had both. I ordered a western omelet. It came with great home fries and toast. Simple, but really good. The service was excellent, the restaurant was clean, with the sweet aroma of fresh eggs and bacon cooking. The retro deco kept your eyes wondering. What a delightful place. So much to see while we waited for our food. The best was yet to come. I noticed the chocolate cake in the case when we got there. I ordered a slice to go. OMG...is all I can say. My companion ordered a strawberry frappe to go. He's still talking about it. AWSOME Find. This is definitely my new breakfast spot. read more

The food is good, the staff is really friendly, the portions are big and the price is average. It has a huge parking lot. There's usually a long line on the weekends. Just expect it. read more

Great little diner. We went mid-morning on a Thursday, so there wasn't much of a wait. The waitstaff were quick and attentive and had us seated within two minutes or so. My only complaint here is that our table was a bit small, and pressed against the back of a booth (where other customers were seated); they didn't seem to mind too much so I guess it isn't a huge deal. Maybe I'm just weird about personal space or something. Moving on, the food was really good and I ordered the special which was a sausage, onion and cheese omelette which came with toast and home fries on the side. Not a whole lot that you can write about omelets so I will just say that everything was well-prepared and flavorful. No complaints about the food or coffee. If you are planning on having a meal at The 50's Diner, plan on waiting in line. The Diner is a local hotspot, drawing customers of all ages, especially during the weekend. The interior is outdated and has been overlooked for sometime. The counter space is low to the ground and in an awkward location for patrons to enjoy their meal. The booths are cramped and do not have the ability to seat over four comfortably (although the waitstaff has not trouble seating your entire party at one table). The waitstaff is not overly welcoming. You get a greeting, you get your order taken, you get your food, you get checked on once, you get your bill, and then you leave. There is no personal experience shared between the staff and your party, which is not always a bad thing on a weekend morning with your family in tow. Locals LOVE the food here. The portions are fairly sized, but are extremely overpriced. I do not imagine that the food is made on site, but from a can / pre-made mixes. I have never been in the kitchen but from what I can see through the doors and window I am under the impression it may be a tad dirty. All-in-all the food is ok at best. The wait is definitely not worth it. However, on the rare occasion you don't need to wait in line, I'd say you should stop on in. The restaurant is cash only with an atm on site. Thought I would give this place a try and what a disappointment . I walked in and didn't realize I put my invisible hat on. I was ignored for what seem to be 5 mins listening it one of the staff have a personal conversation. I had to speak up when she attended to someone who came in after me. The food wasn't that good. Two eggs over easy, with bacon, white toast, and a coffee, please and thank you! I don't think I've ordered anything else from 50s, though their menu is pretty diverse. My husband usually gets the corned beef hash, and he has never enjoyed it elsewhere. So, it must have something going for it, right? This is the perfect place to get a cheap, delicious breakfast (ps- they're not open for dinner). Another reason to go? The super-friendly waitresses and the milkshakes (aka Frappes). When we order 1, they always bring either 1 1/2 or 2 servings. Amazing, and delicious. I discovered the 50s a couple of years ago as a result of a friend's suggestion, and It has become my favorite diner to frequent- as long as I'm in the mood to wait in line for it's savory goodness. Remembering that there's reason why there's a line out the door (and into the cold, rainy weather) makes it all worthwhile! read more

The first time this restaurant caught my attention is because day in and day out I saw people lining up to be seated. Now I like to bring my mom in law there once a while because they serve real food with generous portions. The phone booth is for super hero changing, only! I met a friend here for brunch on a Saturday. The line was out the door, however, moved quickly. As soon as we sat down i saw the wait staff deliver tray after tray of delicious looking milkshakes to tables. however i was focused on ordering the corned beef hash with poached eggs accompanying home fries. the only think i would improve about my dish was the toast, it wasn't the best I'd ever had. but the hash, very delicious. the coffee was great as was the wait staff. the space is not large, but the food and friendliness makes up for it. The omelette why chat the kitchen heat the strings/inside before folding into the omelette. The eggs are cooked and yet the inside is either undercooked just plain cold. We arrived with our entire party, we realized that they only take cash so my husband ran to citizens bank nearby to take out money (later realized that they do have an atm). Even though the hostess saw the entire party, we still could not be seated until my husband got back from the atm. After ordering the food came out quick, eggs were barely cooked, home fries had no flavor and also were barely cooked. The coffee was what you would expect of a diner. My egg sandwich was good. This place was like finding gold. It has become the Sunday morning family spot. The owner is beyond friendly and remembers the regulars as do the waitstaff. The wait can be up to 30 minutes but it goes by quick. Hit it early or pre lunch for less wait. The veggie omelet is outstanding and the blueberry pancakes are amazing. The kids love the french toast. And for the health nuts, they do serve egg substitutes but seriously, its breakfast, let your hair down a bit.
