I mean this place isn't for me, but I can see the appeal. It's pretty basic food, and if I'm spending $14 on a burger, I want it to be a good one. They did have a turkey burger (or veggie burger) option which I did. Do ask for low or no mayo, they put way too much on. For some reason yelp says this place is good for groups: that's not true. We have a group of 6 and had to wait for a long time to get seated. Also the booth was extremely cramped. Also lots of [screaming] kids here. read more

Today my husband and I ate at here for the 2nd time and the service was good, but the food was even better. Our waitress and cook Tammy made me a delicious Ruben sandwich on rye bread. The bread was crispy and soft all at once. With the perfect amount of pastrami, thousand island, and sauerkraut. My husband got the chicken cordon bleu. The chicken was cooked just enough to still be juicy pairs with the cheese (so good). Ham sliced to perfection. Overall would recommend! read more

Good Old American comfort food. It's all good! Burgers (Yummm), Mac & Cheese (Yumm). Malts (Amazing), Shakes, good old fashioned cherry Coke, it's all delish! Best part is they're open super late and nothing on the menu is off limits. One of my fav's! read more

Our go to breakfast joint. Great year round patio eating (booths and a diner counter inside). Still haven't found anything bad on the menu and the staff is hilarious. read more

This place is amazing!! We came here in a Sunday morning rush and they were able to seat us right away and got our food out so fast! The pancakes were so good and you have to try their hash browns! Tara K was an incredible server. She made our experience that much more great! Highly recommend! read more

This place is amazing! Food was great! Tammy, our waitress was so nice and helpful, she even offered a ride to a regular who needed it during her shift. Definitely recommend this place and when we come back to visit out daughter at GCU we will be coming back! read more

The Groovy P. and I ventured to his old stomping grounds for lunch today. The '5 and Diner' on 16th St and Colter left me with little to ask for. Before coming here I had a preconceived notion that 5 & Diners were dirty and nasty. Not the case at all. We walk in and let the waitress know we want to sit outside (since it's so nice and they had misters). We get two different servers bringing us stuff (talk about service) and I ask the one waitress for recommendations. I didn't listen to her, of course, and ordered the Southwestern Burger w/ coleslaw and started with a nice stack of rings. The Onion Rings were perfectly cooked. They looked like they were prepackaged, but they were very crispy and I could actually bite through the onion without pulling the entire thing out (don't you hate that?!!!) The Southwestern Burger was order Medium Rare and was cooked accordingly. Soft, juicy, and pink with a nice crispy browned outer layer that can only be achieved on a well used grill. The creaminess of the chipotle mayo paired beautifully with the green chiles. Unfortunately, because I ate too many onion rings, I couldn't finish my burger. What a shame! The Coleslaw was just how I like it. It's hard to find a really good coleslaw. I prefer mine to be slightly sweet, not sour. Too much vinegar in slaw ruins it in my opinion. This slaw had the perfect marriage of mayo, vinegar, and sugar. Not to mention carrots... My experience here was great! The servers were top notch and kept my water full the entire time and actually chatted with us for a few minutes. There is an artist guy named Ross who has been there every day for 5393 days straight. No, not an employee. He goes there and does his art! He hasn't missed a SINGLE day!!! That's like... 15 years! So if you wanna seem to be 'in the know' ask where Ross is... They'll be able to tell you. Time for a nap! read more

I love coming here! They are always so quick and welcoming. The food is always great. Our littles favorite diner.

Who doesn't like greasy diner food after a night of drinking! I know I do!! Friend and I wound up down at the 5 & Diner off 16th st, and man it was like close to 2am and this place was popping, people sitting outside, people on the inside made me think what the heck are all the folks doing up this late, then just shrugged my shoulders and found a table to sit at. I ordered a steak bombsomethinganother omelet, which was a steak omelet that had peppers, onions, cheese and eggs served with hash browns and English muffin, man I love English muffins! The omelet was good, I of course loaded it with hot sauce cuz it needed heat. But it was good diner food and just what I wanted! The staff was friendly, service was fast and the entire time I was there, there was a steady flow of people coming and going, I guess this 5 & Diner is the spot to go! Yes I had a fun Friday night.......i do love my weekends! read more

Our family has always loved 5 & Diner. Unfortunately, the PV Mall location closed recently, replaced by a Starbucks! Aargh! Fortunately, the 16th Street location, the original 5 & Diner, is still serving up a solid assortment of comfort food. The 1950's theme of the restaurant, reproduced though it is, seems genuine enough. Fun. Friendly servers. You can see why it's a favorite photo op for politicians and the like. 5 & Diner is open 24 hours a day, functioning equally well as a late night hangout, a morning coffee spot for retirees or as a place to take children for ice cream and pancakes. Coin operated jukeboxes located in many booths actually work! Selecting songs and waiting for them to play is great entertainment for kids. They also provide kids with paper hats and crayons. Or, if you're eating outdoors on the patio, hula hoops! The patio is also dog friendly. Shake and sundae offerings are classic and delicious. They are best enjoyed sitting inside at the counter in my opinion. Breakfast offerings are served 24 hours a day. You're not going to see menu items at 5 & Diner being written up in food magazines for creativity and innovation, but they are American comfort food consistently well prepared. 5 & Diner is really all about the ambiance, 1950's style. Bring the kids, or bring the dog, or bring the kids and the dog, or bring your friends in need of a late night sobering up, and enjoy yourself. read more

My husband and I really enjoyed our lunch yesterday. We hung out for over 2 hours here. We got cherry cokes to drink. He got the Big Bopper with onion rings and I got the New Yorker with fries. I love their fries. I think they know the secret of McDonald's' fries cause they tasted very similar. Soft but crispy at the same time. Love it! We played some tunes, then ended our meal with Half Off Happy Hour Shakes (2pm to 4pm everyday for the summer). I got a chocolate banana shake and he got a Reese's one. They give you the rest of the shake in the mixer cup and that filled it up for another round. We had fun singing and dancing to the oldies and enjoyed our entire meal. Service was really good. Our waitress was Tiny T and she was super nice and kept us happy. The guy who brought our food was super funny and friendly. And the manager we talked to was really nice. Had a great time! read more

I've been in here when it's me and one other table. I've also been in when the place is standing room only. Either way, service is always spectacular and quick! I'm always amazed that no matter how packed they get, those cooks on the line always pump out good food fast. Watch for coupons in your mailer. They often send out free appetizer coupons when you buy two adult entrees. read more

The food was good, Delia was our waiter and was very nice and sweet. There was a type of argument going on. somebody else (co-worker ) was screaming at Delia infront of customers. A bit awkward and uncomfortable, she could have done that somewhere else not for everyone else to hear. Other than that Delia was excellent. read more

Very cute place! However service was not that great. They were busy when my husband and I showed up but I feel as if we got thrown to the side just for us to get seated. We didn't get any silverware when we sat down or even after we got coffee. We asked another waitress, older white female with short blonde hair pulled back in a pony tail, to get us some silverware. She sighed so loud and basically threw the silverware at my husband. It definitely made me want to get up and leave after that. Food was typical breakfast food. I enjoyed my meal and so did my husband. read more

Came after work at about midnight, place looked pretty busy so it was understandable that we would have to wait for a table. The diner was well decorated and we were pretty optimistic for our meal. One of the two servers told us we could seat ourselves, but every table was still dirty or not cleaned properly. We settled for a booth that still had a piece of food on the seat. Even though she was very kind, It took us probably about 10 minutes to even be greeted by our own server, and even longer for her to grab one soda. The couple next to us who got sat around the same time we did was able to order their drinks and entrees, eat, order takeout, and pay in the time it took for us to get our two entrees. We were getting ready to leave around 40 minutes after we ordered our food. When the food did come out, it was very disappointing. The fries were clearly old and from two separate batches, since they were seasoned differently, and the hash browns had no seasoning at all. The food wasn't hot and the building was very cold. I understand that you can't expect high quality food at midnight, but something that felt like it was cooked within the last 10 minutes would be nice. I had just come off a 7 hour shift as a waitress so it was really frustrating to wait over an hour for gross, overpriced food. The worst part was that the same song played on the jukebox the entire time we were there, I felt like I was in my own circle of hell. read more

Let me start by saying this place is 24 hours! Skip Denny's and go here, the food is soooo much better. I love their first Friday's every month with live rockabilly, or country, or 50's era inspired bands. There is such a mix of ages there dancing and hula hooping it is a blast! My daughter is 5 and loves going to listen to the music, dance, and hula hoop. People drive their classic cars out, I've even seen a vintage trailer there. (The Scottsdale location does this on the 3rd Friday of the month too.) The staff here is always super nice and friendly. I have always had the best service. For a date night try splitting the turkey club sandwich (this sandwich is huge btw) and a milkshake, it will fill you both up and only cost you about $15! For the kids they are served their meal in a cool classic car (my daughter has started to collect them she likes them so much). read more

This cute food joint is one of many 5 & Diner locations in the Phoenix area, though I understand this is the original location, and the only location open 24 hours. It has a cute 50s-motif going on, from the booths to the bar to the music to the little jukeboxes on some tables to the waitresses' poodle skirts. The menu has breakfast items, entrees, a burger/sandwich section and salads. The BLT was pretty awesome for such a staple item. Prices are very affordable. The outside patio has umbrellas and cool mist! read more

Arrived at 940PM, was seated shortly after. Order taken at 945, the French Dip with fries and I like to carefully watch how much time it takes the food to come out. Waiting, waiting and waiting some more and 22 minutes later I have a lukewarm sandwich and cold fries woo-pee! That is too long to wait IMO and the food was not nearly hot enough. They also did not have spicy mustard but offered to bring me yellow mustard mixed with horseradish, very 'eh'. I really wanted a Diner type experience with freshly prepared food. I guess that piece of Americana just does not exist around here. Very disappointing. read more

What I take is an Arizona-based 50's-theme diner chain, the 16th St. location of 5 & Diner is bright & super clean, with the jukebox standards playing in the background. The service was friendly and attentive, with a fresh glass of lemonade each time my mine was 2/3 empty. The downer was the food. My turkey club was standard, but the fries tasted funny. Couldn't tell if it was the oil or the potatoes or a combination of both. The fact that they were lukewarm didn't help in the matter. Due to lactose issues I didn't try any of the shakes, which I'm assuming is their real specialty. Every other table had atleast a few - I heard someone order the Butterfinger which, obviously, is a shake blended with the candy bar. All said & done, a decent place. I'd try it again, but maybe by ordering something else. This particular location's open 24 hours, which I'm assuming the post-bar crowd heads to at 2 am on weekends. I myself ended up here after everything else in the neighborhood (besides Denny's) had already shut down for the night. read more

I love old timey diners, and 5 & Diner definitely fit the bill. They had classic '50's decor, jukeboxes on all the tables, and all the servers wore uniforms. I came in for dessert one night, not wanting to go back to my hotel room. I debated between a few options, but went with the Diner Split. The fried banana sold me. The split also had strawberries, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice creams, whipped cream, and was topped with a marachino cherry. There was no way I could eat the whole thing (it would be great for 2 or 3 people to share). So I enjoyed as much as I could, making sure I got ALL of the banana. read more

I haven't been here in like 10 years, place is starting to look run down, two of the counter stools are broke and have plastic flowers stuck in them. The booths are super cramped ! The juke box is now broke. Food is not cheap but they do give a senior discount .Breakfasts are good but the sandwiches are below average they put in very little meat. Service is only fair.Place looks kinda of dirty. They have a small outdoor patio. The one in Scottsdale was much newer and nicer but sadly closed up.I like the general idea of an old fashion dinner but this place needs and upgrade.I doubt I will go back. read more

Seriously ..., even if it's late ... Just don't bother!! Drive about a mile and go to Denny. Just about 2 miles and go to IHOP but the food here sooooo bland!! Smh I've been in Phoenix for almost 3 years. I've tried t 4 times in the time I've been here simply because I can literally walk to the place from my condo. The food is sooo bland it's so weird! The first time I tried French toast, potatoes and eggs... Bland! Second time ... Strawberry waffle, eggs... It took forever and the waffle just taste like dough, almost a little sour. I like my waffles a little in the fruity side. Third time ..,, steak omelette. That was pretty good actually!! Very flavorful but the hash browns I ordered with it .... Bland bland bland! read more

Food is delicious. Love there pancakes and king Kong chicken fried steak . The Waitresses are always friendly

Stopped in for a late breakfast this week and was actually quite impressed. Service was slower than average but the friendliness of the waitress made up for it. I love the old nostalgic feel to the place with the coin operated juke boxes at each table and the old style diner booths for table seating. They also have a nice patio you can sit on if the weather is right though the plastic tables and chairs could use a little upgrade. My boyfriend is a lover of a burgers, so we came to the 5 & Diner in hopes to sooth his cravings. He ordered the blue moon burger, and I ordered a classic cheeseburger. The food matched our standards and exceeded expectations, it was love at first bite! We concluded our dinner by ordering a chocolate shake and it eliminated any hunger left within our bellies. What was most pleasant about the experience was our server Deedee, her customer service skills were outstanding. So to start off I am a big fan of American style food. This place did not let down. I was greeted as soon as I walked in and got sat in a booth inside. There was seating outside but I was fine inside. I ordered a Texas burger I think it was called and let me tell you it was awesome. This burger came at the recommendation of "Piper" she said it was a great choice and being a lover of onion rings I quickly agreed. Speaking of Piper she was awesome never had an empty glass and was super attentive if we needed anything. When the food arrived, the burger was juicy the onion rings crispy and big. One of the better burgers I have had. Pricing was very fair especially for the amount of food and service I got. Next time I'll be trying the country fried steak and a shake! Would def recommend this place to anyone! read more

Bringing our kids out to breakfast is always a surprise how they will behave. After hiking, we decided to give it a try. As soon as the server walked up to our table our youngest had a fit and thankfully the server was calm cool and collected and helped us resolve the tantrum. It was a clue to how the rest of our service would be. We were greeted and seated quickly, drinks brought to us and ordering in no time. The fast pace of the diner would make you think they wouldn't go out of their way, but our server appeased our little one quickly and breakfast was on the table in no time. We really enjoyed our meal in this unique Phoenix fixture. read more

Came in at 11:22 and the lady says they're closing the kitchen early. They close at midnight according to online.

Terrible service. Went in for the first time and we'd be told there would be someone there to seat us. Waited and people kept walking in. There was no more standing room my the entrance. Finally a woman comes up and asks for how many, we said 6 and she tells us to walk to the back where the larger tables are. We go and we seat ourselves. Another large party gets seated and they get menus right away. We still keep waiting for someone to come. Waitress goes to the other table again to ask for drinks while STILL we are waiting. My fiancé lets her know we were seated before the other party and we haven't got menus yet. Her reply is "I just got told to come here". We got up and walked out... never going back to that place again. Manager just said "I'm sorry". read more

Let me explain the 2 stars. They were quite busy which isn't their fault (in fact, it's a sign of good business), but the service was terribly slow for our table. We (my fiance and I) ordered one cheeseburger and fries to share. That's it- one order. And it took around/over? 30 minutes to arrive. The cheeseburger was pretty good, but the fries were nothing special. And just the cheeseburger and fries cost $13!! That's overpriced to me. Maybe you're paying for the 50s atmosphere, but I'd rather go to In-N-Out. BOTTOMLINE: we probably won't return. But if you like 50s diner/Retro themed restaurants, you might enjoy this place. read more
