This is the restaurant in the lobby of our hotel, we ate here a lot because of credits we had and free breakfast. It was hit or miss for me, like one dish would be terrible, then the next one great!? So definitely this place depends on what you order. The salad I got was a travesty, no good at all. But the pork chop with purée sweet potato was delicious! Great dish! Breakfast was pretty good, nice selection and I liked for a free hotel breakfast you got to order off a menu! All in all I thought it was above average hotel food. We had something different every day for 3 days. Everything was cooked to order and came out warm. Everything we had was very tasty. I was here for several days, so got to try the restaurant for a lot of breakfasts and a couple of happy hours. For the most part, the food was good as was the service. However, it did seem like they were short staffed a lot of the time. I went to the bar a couple of times for happy hour, and there was only one person working and at least one of the times it was pretty busy. Some days the breakfast was very efficient, but on other days there was around a half hour wait and it seemed like it was because of staffing. One day when I was seated after about a half hour, I noticed that there were 11 open tables in the small dining room, but they were still waiting to seat people. Some of the servers who stood out to me were Glynnis, Nina, and Josiah, but everyone was great. The French toast on the menu is described as a bread pudding, but they said that it was now a cornbread French toast. I tried it and didn't love it. The biscuits and gravy was good, but I felt like the gravy could've been thicker. The chicken in the chicken and waffles is all dark meat. My favorite was the shrimp and grits. read more

Last breakfast before heading out back out west. Located in the Andaz Hotel just off the lobby is this farm-to-table restaurant. This is actually a hidden gem but I say that because Savannah has so many places to go and eat that you one can easily overlook eating in this hotel. If the thought or idea was just "the hotel restaurant" then you're wrong my friend. The service was great but the restaurant does need to step up with the overall look and decor. Granted, it's not as elegant or over the top as many others, but it does need something unique to help it stand out. During the day, the large windows and lighting allow for some great people-watching. We had the Hot Honey Chicken & Waffle (Hot Honey on the side) & The Andaz Catfish & Grits with Fried Okra. Chicken and Catfish were cooked just right and the balance of flavor profiles was a win-win for us. (Sweet & Savory). Both were perfect to hold us over for the flight home. Great breakfast spot inside the Andaz. The variety here really stands out, way more options than most hotel restaurants, and everything was perfectly prepared and cooked. The Gourmand was excellent, the biscuits and gravy were killer, and the shrimp and grits were absolutely top notch. After two visits to 22 Square over the past three years, I can confidently say that our most recent experience was shockingly disappointing. We had hoped, after our first visit, that the remarkably slow service was an anomaly. Savannah holds a special place in our hearts, and we genuinely wanted to give 22 Square, located conveniently in the Hyatt lobby, another chance. We understand that restaurants can have off days, and we tried to keep that in mind. Unfortunately, our return visit proved that the slow service is not an exception, but rather the rule. Both of our visits were for breakfast. And on both occasions, the service was excruciatingly slow. There was absolutely no sense of urgency among the staff. It was as if time stood still in 22 Square. The convenience factor of being located in the Hyatt lobby, a definite plus for hotel guests, is completely negated when a simple breakfast order for just two people takes more than an hour and a half. This is simply unacceptable. What made the experience even more perplexing was the fact that two other tables, who were seated after us, received their food, ate, and left the restaurant long before we got our bill. The table seated just two minutes before us was able to receive their food, eat their entire meal, and leave a full hour before we finally got our check. How is this possible? We ordered standard breakfast fare - nothing complicated or time-consuming. Yet, we sat and waited, and waited, and waited. Every single step of the process was agonizingly slow. This was, without a doubt, the slowest service we have ever received in any restaurant, anywhere. One might consider understaffing as a possible excuse for the slow service. However, that didn't seem to be the case. There were, as far as I could tell, three servers working. And while the restaurant wasn't completely empty, there were only about a handful of tables occupied at any given moment. There were also multiple empty tables, so it wasn't as if the staff was overwhelmed with a packed house. Beyond the glacial pace of the service, there were other issues that contributed to our negative experience. 1. Our last name, which is a very simple four-letter word, was somehow butchered when we were called to be seated. This is a minor detail, perhaps, but it added to the overall feeling of carelessness. 2. Our server was completely absent throughout breakfast, never once checking in on us. As a result, our coffee went unrefilled and we were never asked how our food was. 3. And to add insult to injury, when we initially asked for our bill, we were somehow given another table's bill! While I didn't personally witness this, my partner told me that when she asked our server for the check for the second time, the server gave her a dismissive look. I obviously didn't see this interaction myself because my back was to the server, but to be very clear: even if this incident didn't happen, I would still give this restaurant a one-star rating. The service was simply that bad. From start to finish, this was the absolute worst dining experience we have ever had. The food itself is average, but the service is remarkably poor. I wouldn't return to 22 Square if you paid me. I strongly advise anyone considering this restaurant for breakfast to look elsewhere. read more

We stayed two nights in the Andaz hotel and had breakfast in the adjacent restaurant 22 square. The ambiance is wonderful and I enjoyed the fresh flowers on each table. The staff was excellent , attentive and polite. The first day we were there I had the fried chicken Benedicts. The presentation was gorgeous, and the chicken and gravy were amazing. I was a little sad that the poached eggs were overcooked but I didnt want to send the whole dish out so I just asked for a new poached eggs which came a little later. The second day I had the nutella and berries waffle which was good, but nothing special that I could not have made at home , the sprinkling of blueberries weren't anything to write home about. Overall it was a good place breakfast but probably wouldn't be back if I was not staying in the hotel. read more

I've written about 4 reviews for 22 Square and they've all been 5 stars. This trip I'm downgrading them this time. Gone is the bread service, which I miss. not that I need bread, but when I aspect it, I'm a bit disappointed. The menu has been reduced and several of the more upscale dishes have been replaced by burger options. I'm regretting not getting one of the burgers as my goto, braised short ribs were underwhelming. More than 60% was just fat, and while what meat I got was good, it seems a bit dodgy sending what amounted to a large chunk of fat to a customer. My wife's shrimp and grits were fine, though I thought the addition of pork belly was a bit too smokey for the dish. Service was friendly, if not exceedingly slow. Only one server, but still we waited an extremely long time for water refills. Alas, this was one of my favorite hidden spots, hopefully, they'll get back on track. read more

The restaurant is located in the Andaz and breakfast was good but not without hiccups. Service was good but not coordinated and missing items. I was seated quickly and waited a bit for the server to arrive. Drinks came out quickly and orange juice was fresh. The salmon was somewhat thick cut and was plentiful. The bagel was a bit tough so I didn't finish it. The side of bacon didn't arrive and the soft poached egg came out medium well but I wasn't going to ask nor wait since I had already spent a longer time here. I know that post-Covid that staffing is a challenge so I'd try it again and hope the kitchen staff gets their timing right with some kinks worked out. read more

22 Square came highly recommended by my family while visiting Savannah. I was told the shrimp and grits are a must have, so I decided to go with that! They were not wrong! The shrimp and grits were definitely the star of the show. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and they give you a good amount of shrimp too! Another highlight of the night was the bread we received as a starter. It was SO GOOD! I believe it's an Amish sweet bread with a really creamy butter. Has the perfect combination of sweet and salty! I was a bit disappointed with the deviled eggs. The pimento was too overpowering and it could have had some more seasoning and flavor. Overall I would definitely recommended 22 Square. Tucked inside the Andaz Hyatt hotel is this restaurant which serves perfectly good breakfast (the Yankee bagel, lox, capers, onion and cream cheese on everything bagel- was terrific) at a very fair price. We also had dinner here (due to weather) and I had fabulously cooked shrimp & grits, made in a non-traditional manner with leeks (I'm going to recreate at hone it was so good). Don't do it. No matter how tempted you are with it being in your hotel, it's going to take you 2-3 times longer than it would elsewhere to get your average tasting food. Take the time to go to a real restaurant with quality food and people who know how to cook. read more

The jambalaya pasta really needs a creamy sauce not just a tomato sauce. Seemed like a lazy dish. First, I was a bit apprehensive as I don't like to patronize hotel restaurants, but this place worth the visit. The menu is not extensive (which can be a good and a bad thing - fortunately it was good). We started with a bread basket but order what they call "Bread Enhancements" which are 3 items (ricotta, some marmalade and homemade cheese). We loved the 3 items sort of fighting for it. Fried Green Tomatoes were really good as well For entrees, we order their chicken dish, short ribs and mac-daddy-mac. All were really good portions - the natural chicken was our favorite of the 3 - well seasoned and prepared. The short ribs although really good, it was a bit salty for my taste. Me and my wife got one drink one appetizer and split an entrée and our tab was $70 before tip. We stopped in here during restaurant week since it seemed like a good opportunity to try a place we'd walked by so many times. I'm not sure if they were just overwhelmed or having an off-night but the food was extremely underwhelming. We made a reservation at 7:30 and showed up on time. The hostess who also doubled as the waitress seemed a bit frazzled and sat us at an open table in a largely empty small dining room. I noticed after we sat down that there were only two other tables with diners and every other table was full of dirty dishes. Oddly, the tables remained that way until we were on our third course. The menu was full of nice selections. I started with the house salad and my husband had the bread plate with the Vermont butter. This was probably our favorite course, he enjoyed the butter and cheese selections with the bread and my salad had some nice flavor even though it was originally served without any dressing and I had to request it from the hostess/waitress. For our main course I had the shrimp and grits and my husband ordered the pork chop. My shrimp was nicely seasoned and the grits were creamy but the whole dish was extremely oily which made it difficult to enjoy. My husband spent much of his time cutting through the pork to find any piece that wasn't pure fat. No such luck. He ended up leaving it untouched. Fortunately, the desserts were decent my chocolate mousse had some good texture but the raspberry sauce it was decorated with had a bit of a chemical flavor. My husband ordered the pecan pie and had no complaints after his disappointment with the pork chop. I hope we can give this spot another chance some day but we've learned to stay away from the meat options especially the pork. read more

We stayed at the Andaz a few weeks ago, and on our off night decided to stay in the hotel and eat at the restaurant here. The place was pretty dead, however service was very good and the menu was interesting. I ordered the Chatham Artillery Punch for a drink, which I had heard about on several tours. It tasted like a Long Island Iced Tea on steroids, and this one ended up being the best I tasted on the whole trip. I had 2 and would've ordered more (for better or worse) if my wife was drinking. She ordered tea which she loved. To start we got the pimento deviled eggs with chicharrones. They were alright, but the pimento actually distracted from what was otherwise a very good deviled egg. For my main I got the truffled shrimp and grits with pork belly and melted leeks. This was as rich, complex of a dish as I had in Savannah. The shrimp was plentiful, the pork belly packed a punch, and the grits were addicting. This was a hearty, awesome dish. This was supposed to be our off night in terms of eating, but 22 Square had other plans. Kind of surprising this was dead on a Saturday night. Sometimes people put down hotel restaurants, however this is a good example why that is not always fair. read more

This restaurant & bar was the shining star of our most recent stay in Savannah! Per usual, we stayed at the Andaz, which meant that 22 Square was in the lobby of our hotel, so extremely convenient... that said, DH and I both discussed the fact that after the STELLAR customer service shown to us by Jennifer (bartender), Chef James, Chef David and Chef Jamal... we would have walked miles to spend time in this wonderfully relaxing lounge and bar. Every beverage that we indulged in, from a margarita to a Manhattan (with a few stops in between!) were crafted to perfection by the lovely Jennifer. Her spirit and smile were just delightful and put a smile on our faces too. Of special note at the bar were the "Old Fashioned" that my husband chose, with just the right amount of Maker's Mark and a perfectly frozen block of ice featuring black cherries...DIVINE. For me, Jennifer made me a chocolate martini with a chocolate drizzle and Godiva Liqueur and then topped it off with smashed Whoppers... I tell you what: the smell of the drink alone was enough to let you know you were in for a heck of a chocolate treat!!! YUMMO!! We will be back! Now let's turn our attention to the kitchen: Chef James is definitely making a difference here and it shows in the creativity and dedication of his staff. We were fortunate enough to be "taste testers" of a deliciously light mushroom sherry soup that Chef David created... and if I tell you how delicious the Amish Bread that was baked and prepared by Chef Jamal was... I'm afraid y'all would all rush the restaurant and not leave any for me!!! Seriously, though... you must stop by and give these fellas a chance because their desire to create an exceptional dining experience is evident not just in their dishes, but in their attitudes. While we mostly stuck to the lounge and not so much the restaurant, we were fortunate enough to experience the "Charcuterie Board" for both nights of our stay. Delicious both nights, the standout on these boards was the sopressata and the spicy raspberry jam (made IN HOUSE by none other than Chef James himself!) What else can I say? Obviously, we will be back..."22 Square" was excellent and we can't wait to see what they come up with next! Everything tasted so fresh and delicious! All of us ate every tiny morsel of food on our plates. And the bread the server brought in before the meals was dangerously yummy. Food was ok once we received it. The restaurant appears to be having staffing issues. I'd be ok knowing this going in, but the staff wouldn't mention that it would be an hour wait for a stack of pancakes. Just not a good experience for a first time visit to address positives of the hotel and restaurant. One couple left and two others had to go looking for the wait staff. If you come here expecting good ol' southern style cooking and decor, you'll be surprised. This venue borders on the eclectic and more contemporary. Glass windows allow for a table view of the outside. If you're a foodie, you'll have a blast. This is a true "farm to fork" establishment. Another item I wasn't aware of is the Andaz Savannah is a Hyatt property. My customers and I visited and ordered some iconic beverages where standard cordials are not the norm. My Moscow Mule used Laphroaig 10 year as the main event. We started out with the Charcuterie. Keep in mind this is almost tapas style with many small plates. My customers enjoyed the lamb chop and duck breast. I stayed with the "meat and 3 fish" consisting of grouper which was perfect. The bread was OK and the butter and jelly were nothing special. The omelet was a little smaller than expected for the price but with everything else it came with it was plenty of food. We also got some freshly squeezed orange juice which was great. Service was also good and prompt. We had a few people check to see how our food and trip was going. The Cesar salad had a good flavor but the corn bread croutons were soft like it was just day old corn bread. I had the shrimp and grits (pictured) which had a decent flavor, it was very rich and would have tasted good with some jalapeño. The shrimp were over cooked. My husband ordered the braised beef short rib over grits. The presentation was nice but after about 5 bites he found something questionable in his food. They said it was gristle we disagree. My husband has been a chef for over 20 years and has never seen something like it. What do you think? They apologized and offered another a dish but by that time we were over it. Lovely trendy space almost Scandinavian in feel, off the lobby of the Andaz Savannah. It's billed as a "farm to fork" restaurant, though i saw no signs on the menu or otherwise naming local farms they use, which is a common (and appreciated) trend in the farm to table movement. It was a slow night (on a Friday at 8p -- which might not be a good sign for this place!) and only two other couples passed through while i was there, so there were no more than 3 of us at a time. The waitress was very sweet and hlpful in narrowing down drink choices from the very interesting cocktail list. I ended up getting "when doves cry" - described as a vesper if a vesper was sweet, and that's an apt description. It was a nicely balanced drink! As I was perusing the short, but interesting menu, the chef came over personally to to ask if I had questions (like I said, it was a slow night) - and I asked if one dish could be made with a light touch on, or no cilantro (hate the stuff.) He assured me it could. I got the appetizer of Seared Diver Scallops with Grapefruit Brulée, Baby Watercress, Champagne Reduction. It was lovely. For a main course, i got the roasted salmon with a Corn and Chorizo Sausage hash, Cilantro (almost non-existent on mine) and a Mustard Viaigrette. Fish was just on the edge of being overdone, but was good, as were all the accompaniments. I never order salmon, because i find it boring. This was not boring by any means! Dessert was a rice pudding creme brulee. It was fine, but by far the least interesting part of the meal. My only complaint is that the plates are on the small side, and the prices are fairy high for what you get. The quality is definitely there, but i think a lower price point would draw more customers. At the end of the meal, the chef again came by and asked if the cilantro was ok, which was nice of him. All in all, i was left with a very good impression, and the wish that they'd lower the prices just a bit which might be why it was so quiet - there are plenty of restaurants around Ellis square -- this this place being one of then -- and it should be busier. read more

First time staying in Savannah, I did not want bar food or deep fried southern. I was looking for "clean" healthy fare. Seeing this as 4 1/2 star and a short walk, I ventured in during the week @ 730pm and found the atmosphere strangely spacious and spartan. I was directed to walk past the, very prominent, bar to a hostess stand and was led into a small dining room. It was not crowded. Service was well paced. The food was exactly as I hoped; not over-sauced/spiced. I could taste the food. The portions were appropriate. I enjoy seeing the chef tour the dining room. Its something that says they care. I give 4 stars and not 5 because I feel it's a bit overpriced. It's listed as $$ but 1 person, no alcohol, appetizer, mid-priced main course and dessert was $43 not including 20% tip. Still, I haven't eaten anywhere that makes me contemplate the food in a long while. read more
