THE GOOD the waiter was great very patient and polite all the service people did a great job and of coarse longwood is great however THE BAD the prices are outrageous i got the romaine salad which was good but small i also had the seafood nage, this is where it went all wrong it was supposed to be a saffron sauce, however it was a fennel saffron sauce and everything tasted like burned fennel,it was disgusting,i had to force myself to eat it,all you could taste was the fennel and again it was small, which in this case was a delight since i didn't have to eat as much and last the yule log,it was very good, but again very small,if you way over charge for a dessert and least make it a good portion size i have to say i will not return to the 1906,because the food (dinner portion) taste like it was leftover from 1906 read more

Food missed the mark! When asked how is everything we brought the problems to the attention of the waitress and she said "that's just how we make that" didn't offer to change or take anything back! The cheese board was delicious but only came with enough bread to eat about 1/4 of it. The mitake mushroom was burnt and dry. My wife's dish had a big piece of fish skin and pieces of fish that were mostly dark bloodline. The Pennsylvania duck was decent but the portion was very small for the price and the asparagus was the texture of an oak tree. I would suggest save your money and if you must eat at Longwood gardens just get something from the cafe. read more

. Today awful food. Some under done. Some ordered medium but cooked to death. Nice server, but food just bad. Even the mushroom soup, which we have alw Amy's liked was tasteless. read more

Finally tried the pricey 1906 restaurant and had 5 star service (and 4 star fare) on the lovely outdoor deck. Salmon was tender ($26 for lunch!!!!) and Burger ($18!!!) on a Brioche bun with sauteed mushrooms and onions was very good also. Super pricey (even with 10% off for members) but a fun and special experience. Great for Mother's Day (come a different day and celebrate your mom) or a proposal dinner. read more

1906 Fine Dining offers the foot sore and weary sojourner through the beautiful if endless Longwood Gardens a good, white table cloth sit-down meal. I don't know about you, but LG never gets old. Between the wonderfully choreographed blooms that occur through early spring to summer, every week offers something truly remarkable to behold. 1906 serves up solid fare, with a very good interpretation of mushroom soup and a credible hamburger. The dining room offers glass on three sides, so it is the perfect spot to sit down and relax the barking dogs as you sip a refreshing white wine. While it won't win any awards, and falls a little short of the lofty model that is LG, it will satisfy the palate. Be sure to make reservations in advance, as you will wait for quite some time if you want to eat at lunch. Also, if you get a year pass at LG all food is 10% off. read more

Ask for a table on the back patio, since it's beautiful but the restaurant looks like a bad hotel dining room. The service is pretentious and affected and the booze overpriced. But the food is pretty darned good, though the portions are on the small size. The flower pot bread isn't nearly as good as it ought to be but the flower pot dessert is terrific. read more

1906 for dinner before the fountain and fireworks show. Menu was identical to lunch since there's no dinner hours under normal circumstances. The weather was perfect, so we were able to go for outdoor seating on the deck. A lot of pleasant surprises with such a delicate and well done incorporation of flowers into the flavor profile of several dishes. They really managed to carve out some uniqueness from similarly priced restaurants in the Philadelphia region. Bread was soft, delicious, and puffing out of the mold to create an homage to the ubiquitous local mushrooms. Amuse-bouche of onion soup was quite oniony, but just ok. In my experience, thick soup as an amuse is not the way to go. Pea greens and strawberry salad was excellent. Goat cheese, frisee, pickled rhubarb, and fennel pollen with a rose vinaigrette makes it savory, light, and an excellent choice with the wine pairing. We were both impressed. As salads go, this was pretty awesome. The pastry wrapped baked cheese also held its own. Lots of delicious mushrooms with tomato jam and chive oil. Salmon special was alright, featuring a southwestern style salsa based on the excellent tomato jam. Not as impressive as the other dishes. Rainbow trout with almonds, french beans, braised leeks, and a rhubarb butter sauce was excellent. It was paired with an interesting wine that I described as smelling like a bush, tasting like a leaf. It worked well with the dish, and I have to say I liked the distinctiveness of the first two pairings. Cream cheese parfait was the best part of the meal. Raspberry and the candied meyer lemon slice were nice, but the lavender syrup made all the difference. Delicious. Mini angel food cake was very interesting, the roasted strawberries were in the grey area between whole fruit and sauce. Very nice. Rose sorbet brought everything together nicely. If you're already in Longwood, you owe it to yourself to eat here. read more

(5/22/2016) They should really separate the reviews for 1906 Fine Dining and The Terrace Cafe, these are two different dining experiences in their intents and purposes. We spent a lovely, if rainy, morning on the grounds. Sorely missed out on the Main Fountains, and the tulip displays. We had a reservation for six for brunch at the fine dining side. We were greeted promptly, they asked us if we had any kids in our party ("just checking," he said), hah! Thankfully, we were blissfully child-free. The cafeteria-style Terrace Cafe side looked a zoo. The small dining room is a white linen tablecloth and napkin setting, with a patio near the Conservatory. Service was professional and efficient. The food was haute cuisine, modern takes on continental standards. The Seasonal Farm Fresh Omelet came with sauteed sorrel and chevre and lightly dressed field greens on the side. The omelet was a beautifully rolled specimen, classroom technique perfect. Strawberry Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast was not as cloyingly sweet as expected. Steak Frites was exactly as expected. The famed Longwood Gardens Mushroom Soup delivered fresh mushroom flavor, just rich enough creamy base without being heavy, and delicate and aromatic garnishes (crispy shallots, chive oil). The components of the Farmhouse Salad went well together, our friend's fave was the pork belly croutons. One of our diners ordered the Crispy Poached Eggs on Yukon Gold-Maple Sausage Hash, Pearl Onions, Truffle Hollandaise. She enjoyed it just fine, we remarked it looked a little small. Towards the end of our meal a neighboring table got the same dish, theirs was twice the size and garnished very prettily. We def got ripped off on that dish. A dish of sliced Lamb Merguez and Ricotta Gnocchi distinguished itself only by its very seasonal morels and fiddleheads. The trappings were very precious. Amuse bouche was a Miniature Vanilla Scone and sip of Blueberry Hibiscus Tea. Individual brioches are baked in glazed ceramic flower pots, eggy, tender. The Flower Pot, the signature dessert, chocolate layer cake with dense chocolate ganache in a pastry flower pot and decorated with edible flowers, also very precious. The Heirloom Carrot Cake was a very good specimen, came deconstructed with no warning, but was delicious nonetheless. Def appreciated the light hand of the pastry chef with the sweetness of the desserts. Overall, prices rather high, but likely it's real estate you're paying for, quality and execution were top notch. read more

1906 Fine Dining. I have just had one of the best meals of my life at 1906. The secret was letting the chef pick what he gave me. The 4 course 'Garden Tasting Menu' is the way. The chef sent out 4+ courses that followed each other perfectly, each (4) was paired with a glass of wine. A refreshing tomato/cilantro amuse bouche, a fried ouster with spicy sauce bonus amuse bouche, chopped salad with Longwood vegetables, a duck main course, and the chocolate raspberry explosion that is Longwood Dirt. The meal flowed, it was perfect. The best damn duck I have ever had, it may have been the best dish I've ever been served period. And did you know fennel is amazing in chocolate desserts?!?! Exquisite. read more

(4) ~ very good overall dinner food & service. Note: You have to buy Admission Tickets to Longwood Gardens to get to the Restaurant, which is located inside the park. So I'd recommend combining a trip to Longwood Gardens with your Lunch -or- Dinner at 1906, since you're paying for the Admission Fees anyway;) DRINKS: * Coffee = (3.75) Good * Water(tap) = (3.75) Good * Hot Chocolate = (3.25) The Toasted Marshmallow was pretty good, but the Hot Chocolate was kinda weak, similar to powder mix & water, versus the Traditional kind with heated Whole Milk. FOOD: ** Mushroom Soup = (4.5) Very Good! Highly Recommend being so close to Kennett Square, the "Mushroom Capital of the World";) ** Black Truffle = (4.5) Very Good, but VERY expensive. ** "Mad Elf" Pork Shank = (4.25) Very good, especially the Toasted Marshmallows on the Sweet Potatoes, although the Pork Shank needed some Sauce or more Salt as it was kinda bland, though it was cooked perfectly. ** Bread Roll(Free) = (4) very good & shaped like a mushroom, however, a true "Popover" would have tasted even better;) ** Cheese Board = (4) very good with three different "Cow" Cheeses read more

Their food is expensive. However, i believe they get their own produce from their gardens which is pretty cool to me. The meals will fill you up despite of the high price. There is indoor and outdoor seats. In the winter, they have an "outdoor" area that is heated, (i do not know the proper term). Also, for the price, their food is pretty good! read more

A bunch of us decided to spend Sunday at Longwood while the weather was still nice. None of us had dined here before and I guess we expected a lot more from this restaurant. The park is gorgeous and the dining room is very well appointed. Our server was attentive and quite personable however the food was a little underwhelming. For the good: We started with a cheese plate, which we all enjoyed. Cheese was delicious and the paired nuts and dried fruit complemented well. Some of us ordered Bloody Marys and those were tasty as well. And now the bad: Three of the six in our party ordered the burger for Sunday brunch. All three mentioned that the meat was dry and flavorless. One person ordered the "fluffy" pancakes and the pancakes were not really fluffy and again, he said that the whole dish was bland. Another ordered the biscuits and gravy, she was not pleased with the huge chunks of meat in the gravy. I had the summer salad and mushroom soup. The dressing was light but I wished they had more of their heirloom vegetables that they so proudly displayed. My soup was ok, I frankly have had better mushroom soup from a pub in Kenneth square. For dessert we couldn't resist ordering the flowerpot. It was beautiful. Looked exactly like a flower pot. The whole dessert was just bland. The mousse needed more sugar, the pot was just pure buttercream which needed more sweet, it basically tasted like butter. The best part of the dessert was the "dirt" made of crushed up cookies. Overall, we expected more from a place touted to be "fine dining." read more

1906 Fine Dining - The Flower Pot. Visually stunning but left the taste buds wanting much more. - New American Near Me - Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

As a family, we have come to 1906 for years for special occasions and we have many fond memories. Unfortunately 1906 as succumbed to its over popularity. They significantly expanded by adding outside seating and rearranging the indoor seating for more customers. This is understandable because Longwood in general and 1906 in particular have grown more and more popular over the past 15 years. It has never had great ambiance and as fine dining goes the food is usually hit or miss. But our last couple of visits have been down right bad. From poor service (we were a party of 7 squeezed into a table for 6 and waited 90 minutes for our entrees) to mediocre food Those reading this review will understand the term tourist trap. That, sadly, is what 1906 has become. They will be packed and you will have a hard time getting a reservation and they will not care if you never come back. They will be just as packed next week. Very sad read more

They should have a sign outside by the outside main doors saying 1906. There was a sign with an arrow at the beginning of the walkway and that was it. If there was another sign outside we didn't see it. When we looked into the main doors all we saw was the café ordering counter so we didn't go in. We walked all the way around to the beer garden and then asked a staff member. He showed us the way. If you're going here, walk through the main doors and look to the left just before the Café counter. You'll see the 1906. I wanted Amoretto and eggnog. It wasn't on their drink list but the bar tender made it for me. We started with the mushroom soup and it was just as all the reviews said, it was really good. My wife had the Barnegat Light Scallops. They were cooked perfectly and tasted very good as did the sides. I had the Filet & Lobster. I had seen pictures of steak and lobster on TripAdvisor 1906 at Longwood Gardens, there is at least three pictures of a good size split lobster tail on top of a steak. What I was served was entirely different and as a matter of fact it was pretty ridiculous. A nice seven ounce filet with a tiny little piece of lobster on top. I'm not joking, see my picture of it. The piece of lobster was about three inches long and an inch wide. After further examination it looked to be claw meat and it was a tiny claw at that. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was very good along with the sides. The tiny piece of lobster was good but was gone in ONE bite. For desert we had the crème brulee and espresso, they were also good. We saw the flower pot dessert and it looked really good too. The next time we come here we'll be ordering that desert. So yes, it's expensive but look where you're at and it was very good so we will be back and would recommend this restaurant. The staff was very friendly, attentive and efficient. I had made it known that it was our anniversary on "OpenTable". The waitress knew it and congratulated us. At the end of our meal she brought us an anniversary card with some chocolates. A nice touch! read more

On a blustery, cold evening in December my sister and our adult children joined us for a wonderful evening of greenery and festive holiday fun viewing the beautiful Longwood Gardens sites. My niece managed to score a reservation for dinner at 7:15PM, but after walking around the grounds and seeing the sites - we were ready to eat much earlier, and warm up our frozen digits! Upon arrival the hostess let us know that they could move up our reservation but first wanted to show us where we would be seated - for they had added a heated tented dining room to accomodate the holiday crowd. We thought it was very attentive to give us the option to sit in the tented dining room versus the regular room. We chose to sit in the tented dining room, no problem! Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable in regard to the description of each special item and answering our inevitable questions regarding ingredients. The majority of our group ordered the well known specialty Mushroom soup - I highly recommend this soup, the flavor and freshness was delectable at best! My sister and I both ordered the pork chop dinner which was accompanied with roasted red potatoes and a cranberry chutney and cabbage. The pork chop was grilled to perfection, as were the sides. Water glasses were filled with precision and our waiter checked on us in a timely fashion. My son and his girlfriend had the lobster pot pie, which I can only assume they enjoyed immensely by their oohhhs, and ahhhs as they ate. My niece is a vegetarian - the menu had several choices to make her happy! Our choice for desert was coffee, peppermint ice cream (I know), and pumpkin cheese cake, we shared. The ice cream was incredibly smooth on the tongue and the peppermint did not dominate the taste. The cheese cake was as good, smooth. Overall - If you go to Longwood Gardens, make sure you get a reservation at this wonderful restaurant so that you can enjoy their delicious menu. read more

For as many times as I visited Longwood Gardens, it wasn't until my last visit that I finally ate at this wonderful restaurant. It was a really excellent experience overall. The service, the ambiance and the food were all wonderful. It's not ideal if you have small children- thankfully my daughter was well behaved. The staff were accomodating however. My favorite part of the meal was the dinner rolls which were baked in clay flower pots. It was really adorable and very tasty! Don't miss out on this great dining opportunity. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant in the gorgeous setting of Longwood Gardens. Came here before a production at the Open Plein Theater of "The Producers" with a group. It was a little expensive for a very small amount of food. I was still hungry after eating my entree. The bread was my favorite part, which came in a flower pot! Unique and fun! Overall, a lovely restaurant and good experience. read more

We saw that 1906 had some availability before heading out to see Nightscape (we are doing date night for our 2 year anniversary) so we jumped on it, thinking we were lucky to get in without a reservation. Review spoiler...it was totally disappointing. From the 15 minutes we waited for refills on our water, to the crostini we asked for to go with our five cheese plate (that never came) to my gnocchi with shrimp that was basically a plate of zucchini and onions. In the $34 dish of gnocchi, there were 9 gnocchis altogether. Not lying!! It was a dish of vegetables. My husband had the pork belly which was dry (how do you dry out pork belly?!) So needless to say...$100 later, our anniversary date nighy, and we are already thinking of where we'll go for dinner round 2. read more

The ambiAnce and view are unsurpassed. We had the tasting menu and the diver scallops were delicious. So fresh and tender and braised perfectly. The Penang short ribs were pretty good but I have had better. The goat cheese cheesecake was a different twist but still very creamy and a great finish. It is $75 a person ad Gomes with dine pairings. Yes t is pricey but where else would you be able to dine in what is arguably one of the loveliest horticultural exhibits in the world? Service s impeccable. Definitely eat here if you are staying for a Performance (kiss me Kate anyone?). It will start your evening off right. read more

Great dining option at the Gardens, and you're willing to spend a little more on food. 1906 is great for a real sit-down service, and the food is actually very good. The brioche bread is in the shape of a mushroom! Service is friendly, and the setting is great for entertaining guests. The Cafe is your cafeteria style with more casual food options. However, do not pass up on the mushroom soup (also available at 1906) - it's one of the crown jewels of the Gardens. read more

This review is for 1906 Fine Dining. If you are planning to visit Longwood Gardens and want a classy meal, this is the place. We each had the 3-course tasting flight lunch, $35 or $55 with wine paring, both very reasonably priced for what you get. All the food was very good, but the presentation was superb (see photos). The first course was duck confit salad with frisee and arugula, green lentils, pickled beets, and a pomegranate balsamic dressing. The warm duck was very good and the combination of accompaniments worked well. The main course was roasted pheasant with port cider reduction on a bed of black truffle potato puree, topped with savoy cabbage and accompanied by roasted chestnuts and apples. A very tasty combination. The first two courses were very good, but best of all was the bird's nest dessert - a pear sorbet in the shape of an egg and encased in white chocolate in a nest of baked and shredded phyllo dough garnished with cinnamon tuile, quince puree and gingersnap. Overall a great meal and excellent service as well. Note - Paid admission to Longwood Gardens is a prerequisite to eating here and be sure to make a reservation in advance. read more

1906 Fine Dining - Mushroom Soup - New American Near Me - Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

The 1906 Fine Dining experience was a total surprise to me, as was the beauty of Longwood Gardens, which I visited for the first time ever last week. A superlative visit to one of the best botanical gardens I've ever been to was capped by lunch, outside on the deck, under the trees at a spacious umbrella table. It was truly a fine dining experience in every sense from the well spaced, capacious tables to the impeccable yet friendly service, to the food itself. Everything was organic and locally sourced and there was a lot to choose from on a rather ambitious menu. Some of the veggies were grown on the estate itself ( like the heirloom tomatoes in the special gazpacho that I started with) . The rolls came in funny little pots which it seems is a tradition at Longwood, and they were wonderful too. My main course was a grilled organic chicken that was "beyond belief" succulent, and came nestled in a bed of garlicky, herbed grits-- yes, I said grits. They are definitely not just for breakfast anymore. We are talking " melt in your mouth " wonderful. After tromping around the spectacular gardens and taking pictures all morning, it was a real treat to be pampered under the treetops with a leisurely lunch at 1906. This was my first, but I hope not my last visit. read more

1906 fine dining: Perfect service; perfect ambience--very classy place. Everything we ordered was fresh, tasty and nicely presented. For brunch, I had the beet salad (hold the cheese), the cheese plate, and iced tea. The brioche bread was yummy. After touring the gardens, I stopped by The Terrace Cafe and bought an egg salad wrap (sundried tomato wrap), which was delicious. Longwood Gardens, where these restaurants are located, is truly amazing, and the restaurants are a plus! Can't wait to return to all three. You can't patronize the restaurants without buying an admission ticket to the Gardens; For the restaurants, you park in the lot near the Visitor Center, pay your admission or show your visitor pass, and walk through the grounds to the restaurants. read more

1906 is a nice choice for lunch at Longwood Gardens. While perhaps not as refined a fine dining choice as available in the city, we were impressed and will return. While I would have enjoyed a larger choice of lunch items, the burgers we ordered were delicious, especially when consumed with bloody marys. The service was delightful. The decor is basic but the windows on two sides of the room overlook the trees and seem appropriate after a walk in through the garden. read more

September 18, 2015: 1906 Fine Dining - I went for lunch here. The menu wasn't extensive and we ordered 5 different entrees and 1 cheese starter appetizer. The cheese platter was ok. Half of the cheeses were ok. The other half were disgusting. The mushroom soup was good. It tasted creamy. The soup of the day (tomato gazpacho soup) was ordered by 2 people, both didn't care for it. I ordered the panini. It was tasteless. The fries were good and my mom liked her spinach omelette. I wouldn't eat here again unless I was absolutely starving and the cafe section was booked. Pros: The staff was extremely nice and accommodating (brining my son some fruit before the food came out). The decor is nice. The bread is good. read more

Well, we came to Longwood for my birthday, and were somehow fortunate enough to get the last reservation for that day at 4:30pm. The only thing I didn't like about our seating was that we were seated along a wall with 2 person tables very close to one another. I felt like this one couple kept listening in to our conversations, which was a little uncomfortable. They start you off with their brioche bread in a plant pot - very cute and tasty. It is a little pricey, so beware. For our entrees, I got this really unique salmon with a root beer reduction sauce. My boyfriend got the chicken marsala dish I believe. Both were quite tasty. For desert I got the eggnog cheesecake - a slight disappointment because of the size vs. price. Again, I think this is something you do once and then never again. They have a very tasty cafe with many options that are probably just as good as the restaurant. Also, I was shocked that the lunch and dinner menu were the same - and the same price! read more

I would like to preface my family has been coming here for years for the winter decoration and we ALWAYS eat at 1906. We love the ambience, the wait staff are incredibly friendly and we always enjoyed meals. We went for a birthday celebration yesterday and for the first time I felt like it was a waste of money. The quality of food did not reflect the cost and it was incredibly disappointing. We had the prefixe three course meal. The bread and appetizer were great. However the entree were ALL so salty. The beef while cooked medium the flavor was so so salty. I ordered the risotto and could not eat more than a couple of bites. I felt like I was eating spoonful of salt. Also the risotto was not cooked all the way so the initial bite is soft but as you chew into it it was like uncooked pasta. I ate my child's Mac and cheese for the rest of my meal. We would have told our server but service was so slow. The only time he came to us without having to call him was when we collected our money after handing us our check. While we will visit longwood gardens again I'm not sure we will ever return to 1906 which is a shame. read more

We went on New Year's Day, and were in the 11:30 group when they opened. In spite of being among the first customers, it took an hour and 20 minutes for us to receive our food. The salmon and fig salad were mediocre. I could get much higher quality at a much lower price in our favorite restaurant. We were surprised that they did not have a brunch or lunch menu--only the dinner menu. The checks arrived, and 3 out of the 4 checks had errors. We got home to realize we are members of Longwood Gardens and should have received a 10% discount, but no one ever asked if we were members. Terribly disappointing. read more

The ingredents were fresh and above superb. I am so happy to have found this gem. Value for your money is A+++ read more

Very good but for the prices I expected more. I had the crab cakes which were good but just a tad fishy. The green goddess cole slaw was too creamy and could have used more lemon or vinegar. It would have contrasted the fish nicely if it had a sour note or two to it but it was rather bland. My husbands pork chop was a joke! Horrible cut of meat, no seasoning and rather tough. He was very disappointed. The scallops were cooked well but a bit sandy and the green sauce under them was gross. My hubby enjoyed the mushroom soup. I had the corn soup and that was yummy. I think the chef has to refine the dishes a bit and change the pork chop all together. Don't think we will be back anytime soon. read more

After a wonderful couple of hours walking the grounds we decided to take a break and have lunch and try 1906. We were seated promptly and had wonderful service throughout of lunch. The menu had lots of interesting options. I had the SIW corn soup, and we shared fried green tomatoes. The soup was okay- portion very small. The fried green tomatoes were good, but portion versus price is questionable. I have no problem paying for fine dining, but I do expect something special for the price, so this was an overall disappointing lunch. Would not come back. read more
