This cute location in Carmel was a nice place to stop for lunch today! I was pleasantly surprised to see that this gastropub was still offering brunch items in the afternoon on a Saturday, and it made the menu seem more homey and comforting. The food was a bit of a mixed bag, but overall was satisfying. Beware the pretzel appetizer if you don't like fennel; it's not listed on the menu, but they are covered in fennel seeds. However, the pretzels were piping hot, clearly homemade, and accompanied by a delicious beer cheese on the side. I really enjoyed my salad, and my mother in law raved about her cheddar soup. The fries were excellent, and my husband really enjoyed his poutine. I didn't love my side of brown butter gnocchi...they were pretty gummy and needed some salt. The cocktails were outstanding, and our waiter really took the time to recommend an appropriate beer for my father in law. Overall, the service was well above average. The food was also fast and hot, just right for a freezing January afternoon. It's a little touch, but I liked that they used cute growler jugs as water jugs. The food, drinks and service were great! The spicy Bloody Mary was delicious and I really enjoyed their house made mix. The cheddar and ale soup had great flavor and the wedge salad was also great. My only complaint was the salad was a bit on the smaller side. If you get that as your entree then I recommend getting it with a protein. Our server was managing the bar and all of the tables in that area and she was super friendly and gave us great service. Looking forward to coming back! read more

Met for lunch with friend. Was seated immediately and greeted by our server. Wasn't crowded when we got there on a Friday about 1:00. Food came out fairly quick but mine was not hot. I ordered grilled cheese combo which included soup. Waitress told me she preferred the ale and cheese soup so I did sub that out. Food was sub par. Soup was lukewarm and grilled cheese was crispy but cold. Cheese was not melted but bread had been grilled. My dining partner seemed fine with her burger. Should have sent it back but as she brought our food said there was now rush of customers so food would take longer now. There is parking garage and you can enter a back way to avoid walking outside in bad weather. Just have to figure out how to do it as not clearly marked. read more

I tried 101 Beer Kitchen for the first time on a Saturday at around 6:30 p.m. I did not have a reservation. I would describe the greeter as more efficient than friendly. She advised that I would have to wait about twenty minutes to be seated. I asked her whether the bar was "first come first serve." The greeter said it was, so I put my name on the waitlist for a table and looked for two open seats at the bar. Ideally, the greeter would have told me about the bar being available without a wait. Had I not assumed that the bar was seating was available, I might have unnecessarily stood around waiting for a table to become available, I do not remember a lot about the ambiance of the restaurant, but I thought restaurant looked clean. And I liked the fact there was a hand washing station that was outside of the bathroom. After finding two open seats at the bar, we sat down. There were not any menus available, so I started searching for a menu on my phone. The bar tender eventually came over and handed menus to us. The bar tender stood out for his ability to be attentive and friendly without being intrusive. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries. My wife ordered a salad of some kind. While waiting for the food to arrive, I watched a UFC fight on one of the televisions that was over the bar. I was well positioned to see the television, but I could easily imagine that some people would be disappointed if they planned to go to this restaurant to watch a game. The television viewing experience at 101 is inferior to what you would experience at a restaurant such as Twin Peaks. (But 101 is a much better place to take a date!) While waiting for the food to arrive, I was able to look into the kitchen. Nothing alarming was happening. The parts that I could see looked clean. That was encouraging. On both sides of the window that allows you to view the kitchen, there were lists of beers. The restaurant offers a good number of choices if you are a novice beer drinker. The burger, fries, and salad arrived after a reasonably short amount of time. I thought the burger ranked somewhere between acceptable and exceptional. For the price (around $15), I did not think it was drive-across-town-for-it good. And I did not think the taste was as good as what you might get at the Hop Doddy in Austin, Texas, But if you are already in the restaurant and want to have something basic to pair with your beer of choice, then I do not think you would go wrong with 101's burger. I think my wife placed her salad in the "acceptable but not exceptional" category. I think the total bill was $33 (including the tip). But I could easily see spending $50 - $75 if I wanted to have a couple drinks and a couple of the more expensive food choices. I am giving 101 four stars, but I would describe the experience as somewhere between liked it and really liked it. That means 101 is really a 3.5 for me. But I can't give a half star, so I am rounding up instead of rounding down because the place is better than a three star restaurant. I suspect that I will return one day if I happen to be in the area. read more

We have visited this location multiple times within the past year. So this is a combined review of the food and drinks tried during all those visits. In starters their sausage mushroom flatbread is a very good one..thin crust with light toppings. The seasonal Butternut squash perogi was very tasty and rich. Amongst us for dinner we have had the Birria sandwich, braised short ribs, green chili(good), 101 burger(good), chicken parmesan, shrimp and grits, pretzel chicken sandwich and salmon BLT. Chicken parmesan was surprisingly good...I was surprised because even though the chicken looked not flattened enough and thicker than usual, it was still quite juicy with an expected amount of breading. The pretzel chicken was a little bit of a miss because even though the chicken was tender and juicy and the sauce was tasty the chicken itself was unsalted and hence tasted bland. The Birria torta and shrimp & grits are classic and very good. The wedge salad surprised me with the use of romaine lettuce instead of the usual iceberg lettuce. The dressing was exactly the consistency and taste I like and I enjoyed the salad a lot. The crispy blue cheese potatoes are a good side as well. Their cocktails have been a hit for me always. Worth noting in our last visit, our server did check on how the food was for us. Later on she came to me and asked if something was wrong with my pretzel chicken sandwich since she noticed I left quite a bit of it. I mentioned that it wasn't salted at all and she said that she would pass the feedback to the kitchen. First time to try the SALMON B.L.T. Arugula, Tomato, Smoked Bacon, Lemon Avocado Mayo, on Telera Bread. It was very good and I subbed the beet chips for the bacon brussel sprouts which were good as well. My friend had the ROASTED TOMATO BISQUE & GRILLED 3 CHEESE SANDWICH Fontina & Cheddar Cheeses and Boursin Cheese Mayo on Grilled Sourdough served w/ Roasted Tomato Bisque & Arugula Salad which she enjoyed too. They did take the turkey panini off the menu and a couple of other items but still have the excellent sea salt caraway seed soft pretzels with a beer cheese all house made. Those alone make me go off my gluten free diet! So so good. A little crunchy bake on top and the beer cheese is such a good match with it. My favorite item! Just sorry I didn't come here sooner. Reasonable prices, great waitstaff (Jen!), a diverse menu and delicious food. I had the Lemon Chicken. Incredible. Such a large portion I brought home almost half of it. My husband had the Creole Walleye, which he loved. Great flavor- not too spicy- and he couldn't get over how delicious the Fried Green Tomatoes were that it was served upon. We started with the Paloma for him and the Champagne Margarita for me. We had a great time here! We specifically went to this restaurant because of the starters. It was all that I wanted and why we actually went. Our waiter was a 5/5: He was very attentive and was courteous! The food was 4/5 for me overall: Southern BLT: (5/5) was scrumptious! It was the perfect balance of sweet and salty with a hint of tangy-ness from the pickled watermelon. Most definitely wasn't expecting the deliciousness I received. 101 Deviled Eggs: (4/5): These were a bit *Mustardy* (to much mustard) also it was void of what I'm used to like relish with a hit of sugar or something. But when I mixed the egg with the capers and the prosciutto it beefed it up a bit with the saltiness and flavors from both. Smoked Adobo Wings (4/5): The sauce and cooking methods was impeccable. But the chicken was on the bit of the dry side. But it came with a side of house made blue cheese. All I can say is just "Raise Your Hands and say YASSSS GAWD!" 101 CheeseBurger (2/5): it was my least favorite...it missed onions and overall flavor. Chile this burger needs a little flavor profile help. I didn't even eat my half but we didn't send it back even though we were grotesquely disappointed about it. The WATER (5/5): I know this is a weird thing to rate but it's worth noting because we're avid water drinkers. I have been here two other times and the service was not good. So I tried it one more time with my granddaughter. Nothing has changed, the server brought our menus then forgot us. We decided to try this place out since we were up this way. We walked in and the wait was about 20 minutes for no reservations but we quickly found seats at the bar. The waiters were friendly, quick and overall great vibes. We ordered a glass of wine and a beer. We also ordered the Pretzels with beer cheese for apps. They came out immediately and were fresh, hot and the cheese spread was delicious. We ordered the lemon crusted chicken (pictured) and my partner ordered a burger with fries. He said his burger was cooked perfectly and burger was excellent. My chicken was one of the crispiest, most delicious chickens I've had in the city. I had the champagne margarita and enjoyed it. I tasted my husband's nutty Russian and that was amazing. We tried several appetizers and the best by far were the hot pretzels with the beer cheese. I could have eaten just those and would have been happy. The house made tater tots were also good, but the cheese curds were a let down. They just don't compare to my favorite place! I did the vegan burgers and paired with Parmesan fries. The patties were great, but felt having them served on a giant piece of sourdough was unnecessary. We went to 101 Beer Kitchen for the food; we aren't beer drinkers, but we had heard good reviews on the food. We arrived at 6:15 on a Sat. night & by 6:30 the place was full. It's hard to see how large this surprisingly big restaurant is unless you walk around and see the many areas inside & out ... outdoor patios with plastic walls & heaters, a bar, a large room in back, etc. So seating-wise, there is something for everyone. Bar is tight when full. Staff was friendly and well-trained. Menu has many items that sound good, and are good, but it's still mostly bar food. Not a lot of healthy items, & lots of fried items: loaded tater tots, crispy lemon chicken, and lots of blue cheese, bacon, mayonnaise, grilled cheese, etc. Even the croutons were 'pork croutons'. We tried the burger (came with fries) & crispy lemon chicken -- both fine except burger was quite pink inside so they took it back and brought another burger cooked more. They did offer salmon too. CHS is having a class reunion at 101 Beer Kitchen this month which will be very nice place for that. 101 Beer Kitchen will succeed because they have good employees and are putting in the effort. read more

As a breakfast/brunch food fanatic, I can definitely say this is the best brunch I've ever had. Located right on Rangeline in Carmel, there's a nice outdoor patio with a fire pit for summertime, and lots of windows on the inside looking out to carmels arts district. The inside has an upscale feel to it while still being homey. Our waitress was very friendly and even though we pretty much knew what we wanted to order she was able to give recommendations and was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was exceptional. The pineapple skillet pancake stole the show. It was extremely thick, the sauce was great but not too overpowering, the pineapple glaze was sweet but not too sugary, and the bacon was crisp and well seasoned. The pancake itself almost had a cornbread texture to it, which made it much more filling and made it easier for the glaze to soak up. Pigs in a blanket were also great, wish there were even more in an order! The poutine was also wonderful, the short rib was great quality and the fries and gravy mixed well together.
