Driving thru Oceanside hungry. The wife and I found this quaint little spot that is warm and inviting for a home style breakfast. Both ordered the same Texas (French) toast breakfast with eggs, sausage and hash browns. The food was delicious. It's difficult to find the perfect French toast but this place delivered. To make our visit even more pleasurable, our waitress Addie was awesome. Checking up on us regularly and topping off our coffee on this breezy day was a nice bonus. My boyfriend and I have been going here for the past year and liked it - especially when we wanted to change it up. However we went here today and were VERY disappointed. First, the menu is extremely limited. It's to the point where they only have the basics - a few omelets, pancakes, eggs and variations of those together. No French toast plates. No Mexican plates. Second, the coffee cake (which is kind of a staple item at all breakfast places in Oside) was awful. It had nuts on the top (which I can scrape off), however the inside had a jam filling of some sort. The taste of it was off and not right. Needless to say - I was very disappointed and it was not good. Third, I ordered some hash browns with my omelet and they were SOGGY when I ordered them extra crispy. I didn't eat them because they were so gross. I don't know if they got a new cook or something, but something was definitely off and, as a result, we will not be coming back here for a long time. read more

The food was fantastic, everybody was satisfied till the bill came it was 62.00 for breakfast 3 adults and one child, then we get to the register and the bill goes up 20 dollars. Why , got no real answer. Lil small diner on the side of the road not crowded at all and short staffed and the waitress has a chip on her shoulder although we just wanted stuff like cream for the coffee,syrup for the pancakes. We showed up at 7am and we're the first customers for the day. We were seated and served by the same young lady who did an excellent job. The place started to fill up before we left. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. An interesting thing is that the restrooms are outside in a small separate building and it will cost you 25 cents to use it, but they are clean and there is no extracurricular stuff going on. My husband and I stumbled upon this gem, while we were originally on the way to Don's Country Kitchen for a 40 min wait, and we decided to give it a try instead. It did not disappoint. I've worked in the hospitality business, and, let me tell you, this place is a clean and well-oiled machine. We were greeted immediately and got a table within minutes. The staff is professional and friendly. The environment is a 50s diner vibe that is bright and spotless. The food is clean diner food. My husband enjoyed the chicken fried steak and spicy Bloody Mary, while I went with a lighter option of avocado, cottage cheese, bacon, and toast (with a mimosa and a slice of the light and fluffy coffee cake). If you want cafeteria style food fast... I lived a few blocks from this place and one night decided hey why not try some home cooked diner food? I mosied on over and pored over the menu. Wasn't in the mood for greasy fries, burger etc--just a hot meal. I got the turkey and stuffing dinner. Maybe I should have stuck to something more simple. The turkey was bland and stuffing not doing anything for my palate. I could have gone to von's and put a hormel compleats meal in the microwave and it would have tasted better. The service wasn't great. There excuse was there system was down, and she was distracted with fixing it. . There was 2 waitresses, didn't know it took 2 people. When you have a restaurant and at least 4 tables taken up (not even packed). I have visited this place for years because after a long morning of surfing, there was always some good tasting inexpensive food to fill you up. My feeling on this has changed recently. It's quite obvious when a restaraunts gets a new cook or the old one stops caring. This ill fate has befallen the 101 Cafe and I dint think I'll be back any time soon. I ordered the ABC Omelet ($8) and it just seemed like cheese and bacon, with hardly any egg but a thin layer. The scattered avo was disappointing since thus was the only bit of flavor. The cheese wasn't even melted inside. This was a slapped together thin omlette no longer worth the price. The has browns that came with my plate were a little raw on the inside but still tasted fine. The place hasn't changed since 1928 looks like , the food is okay and the place is located in the good prime real estate in the city of Oceanside CA. Well I don't know where to start, me and my husband went to 101 Café at 10:00 this Tuesday morning and we were very disappointed. First of all there was only one server and zero bussers for the whole restaurant. It took us 45 minutes to receive our food. When the food came out I ordered blueberry pancakes with bacon, bacon was burnt pancakes were like leather. My hubby ordered vegetable omelette, hashbrowns and English muffin well let me just tell you that the hashbrowns were not edible They were burnt and greasy and soaked in old oil. The English muffin came out raw and soaked in margarine or old butter. I am a server so I know how things should be done. The location and venue is cute, and the staff seem nice. I ordered the club sandwich, and was happily surprised that the roast turkey was thick and fresh, not slimey lunch meat turkey. The only thing is, it was a little dry, and the bread was toasted too much (one of the sandwich corners was on all burnt bread), so it cut my mouth up pretty bad but obviously it was worth it because I ate most of it regardless. My friend's sourdough burger was ordered with extras, and even then it seemed kinda plain. I think I'm used to sourdough burgers at places like Ruby's that are loaded and juicy and dripping with 1000 island. This one seemed like a glorified patty melt, but he said it was good. THE RESTAURANT CLOSES AT 2PM! Thought I'd put that out there after witnessing at least 10 people pulled into the diner only to find out that it was closing. How upsetting would it be if you drove all the way down for a roadtrip to the one place you want to try but realized it closes in the middle of the afternoon? Thank goodness we got lucky and made it the last min. I would have never known! Now that you've finally got through the crazy traffic on I-5, parked your car at 1:50pm and took a nice profile pic at the famous wall art, time to dive in to the food! I had the pile-up breakfast plate- scramble eggs with all sorts of bfast meat and then topped with gravy. Oh man it was heart-attack-worthy kind of good. I could easily have another cup of gravy just by itself. My friend devoured his burger in less than 5 minutes. I would never find out how good it tasted. The history here is incredible.
