She kept denying that there's a reservation made and finally she found it and didn't even apologize or anything and we were promptly seated. Since I and a few of us were early and while we're waiting for the rest of the party to arrive, different staff repeatedly rushed us to place an order. Yes, I appreciate the efficiency, but can't you also respect your customers' pace? The person who made the reservation hasn't even arrived yet! I must say, however, that they are very diligent about filling our drinks and clearing our plates. Then there comes the ridiculously priced plate of mantis shrimp. We ordered the pepper and salt mantis shrimp and the server suggested 4 pieces so we without much thought said okay. Man they were the best, biggest, juiciest mantis shrimp I've ever eaten! But guess what, each costs HKD 300 so just that plate alone costs $1200 (USD 150)!!! Holy crap. Way to reel us in on the expensive dish! What a surprise when we saw the bill! Deceptive bunch of people. Their crab was delicious but the fish soup was just alright. And their cold platter was a hit or miss. Baked pineapple bun with barbecue pork and pine nuts: This was like a combination of the pineapple bun nai wong bao and char siu bao. The pineapple bun is good with a sweet crunch top. The char siu was good and tender. There was a good balance between sweet and savory. Baked whole abalone puff with diced chicken: Elevated version of the traditional taro puff. The puff was soft and crispy. The diced chicken portion was small stuffed into the puff. It didn't have much flavor. The abalone on top was alright. Appearance wise, this was pretty cool to look at. Steamed lobster and scallop dumpling: Elevated version of the shumai. The lobster on top tasted like prawns not lobster. The taste was ok but it was fresh. This dish only serves 1 piece per order. Steamed shrimp dumplings with bamboo shoots: Pretty much like a typical shrimp dumpling at any other dim sum restaurant. Nothing special. Xiao Long Bao: The Xiao long bao was good. My favorite out of the others we tried here. The broth was hot and flavorful. The meat was very good and savory. Chilled mango and sago cream with pomelo: The dessert was refreshing. It has a light mango taste but no pomelo flavor. There were some tiny pieces of pomelo but didn't have any taste. It just adds texture. Overall, we had to order multiple of the same dim sum since we didn't reach the minimum of HK$500 per person. Upon arriving at the restaurant, I found that there were more than two empty tables, but there were no available spots for lunch on Open Table. It is said that dim sum is only available at lunchtime! I ordered some recommended dim sum and dishes that received good reviews. To conclude, the crab shell dish was the most delicious, followed by the buns. The buns contain pine nuts, and the skin is very soft and tender, making the texture unique and delicious! The taste of the chicken soup recommended by everyone might be liked by foreigners, but personally, I found it a bit too rich. I still prefer traditional Chinese soup (a bit lighter). They also served dim sum after the meal which I felt was average. The rice noodle roll was quite innovative, filled with preserved vegetables and char siu, the first time I've had rice noodle roll with preserved vegetables. The abalone didn't impress me much. The must-try "unusual rice" was my first time having rice-shaped Italian pasta, which turned out to be fried noodles instead of fried rice. So when you can't decide whether to eat rice or noodles, you can have this. I ordered bubble tea because I liked it last time. I personally recommend the Hong Kong-exclusive rose bubble tea (the third one on the menu), which has a slightly sweet rose flavor, not too strong in tea taste, somewhat like a non-alcoholic rose bubble wine. The oolong tea bubble tea felt a bit too sour, with overly complex seasoning. The service was excellent, with staff coming over to refill tea at any time (your teacup must be nine-tenths full), and they also came over to inquire about the taste of the dishes, similar to foreign restaurants. I feel it's a restaurant suitable for foreigners to host guests. The overall taste is not bad, but not to the extent of being extremely delicious, and the value for money is not high. A boy came here with crutches and his table was upstairs. unfortunately they don't have an elevator but the host offered to piggy back him up which I thought was amazing. The host also kept giving people a heads up whenever the nearby lot had a cop giving out parking tickets. You can just tell that the staff was very customer first by the type of personal and unconventional service they provided which I, myself have never seen anywhere else before (literally in the world). Location wise, it's right on the water front on sai Kung, so the view is quite pleasant while you're enjoying your meal. After you order your dishes, you can go over to the giant fish tanks to pick out the fresh and live seafood. Literally every dish I had was absolutely amazing in flavor and super fresh. Probably even cheaper than many other places that aren't as good! I saw a few michelin signs on the walls, but I'm not sure if it's referring to them or the alcohol they're promoting. Also known as "Hing Gung" (慶功), it literally means to celebrate and to reward the hard work the crew put into the show. Much like sik siu, since the eaters are of high exertion, the food would most naturally be as trashy as can be~ Healthy eaters might want to hit the return button now as the foods may be despicably fattening. Deep fried is almost the golden rule for every trashy food, even in Hong Kong; the famous shrimp toast is actually minced shrimp smeared on a piece of bread and deep fried to crunchy perfection; and you got it, the piece of bread is soaked with grease. To make it even more damaging, mayonnaise is served on the side for you to dip the toast in. Damaging as it seems, but it is also very gratifying and is often the dish that is cleared the soonest. Hing Gung is often an event of the nights and there aren't a lot of joint cater to this batch of customers at this time of the day. I still remember walking into this shop with the waiter asking us to wait outside the shop at 11 in the evening, while they were trying hard to rearrange the tables to sit the 15 of us down. Here, you'll enjoy tasty dim sums while rubbing elbows with local folks and a staff that speaks limited but enough English. Prices are moderate and reasonable for a restaurant that is at a somewhat upscale area. The basic staples such as har gow, siu mai, pork spare ribs, etc. were really good, albeit not outstanding. However, one dish was absolutely amazing and memorable: FRIED BEAN CURD ROLL IN TOMATO & EGG SOUP. The bean curd wrap was thin and was fried to a crispy perfection. The filling was soft, moist, and yummy. The rolls were dipped in a thick and delicious tomato & eggs soup which was close to heavenly even by Hong Kong's high standard. The prices are reasonable; somewhere between 20-38HKD for each dish. Want a better deal? Shoot for the early bird special before 10:30am for 15 HKD or less select dishes. Plus, the food is fresher and the crowd rush is non existent. While I haven't seen a ton of tourists here (hello locals!), it should be noted there are no carts here. It's all a la carte style and be assured there is a limited English menu available. The selection is pretty stellar and more importantly, the food is tasty. The special shrimp rice noodle (鮮蝦腸粉) is beautifully presented, in bite size snippets served with whole shrimps in each fold. Same bodes for the har gau shrimp dumplings (蝦餃), which may seem a bit minuscule, but pack a decent amount of flavor. Kudos to their dumpling soup ((灌湯餃) for not being overly salty, and sporting a super silky dumpling everyone can get behind. Regular siu mai (燒賣) is readily available, but I would vote for any extra dollars for the super version in the emerald mushroom version (翡翠北菇燒賣). I admit to not being a fan of Malay sponge cake (馬拉糕) but I rather appreciate Ho Choi's soft and squishy version. Turns out I'm just not a fan of dry, less fluffy versions. Their haam seoi gok (鹹水角) is one of the better versions I've sampled, at least before noon. Anytime after that, it becomes like the rest of the subpar set from Dim Sum land. I really enjoyed their sticky rice (糯米飯), which is abundant in Chinese sausage (臘腸), which will ultimately win me over any day. No dim sum experience is complete without egg tarts (蛋撻) but I reckon the lao sa bao (流沙包) is the ultimate sweet treat. Living up to its "flowing sand" name, it is a steamed, fluffy, bao of magic runny sweet egg custard. When done well, it is a highlight as much as any, and one that I look forward to each time I'm at Ho Choi in TST. I haven't been around to try their dinner as of yet, but if it's anything like their Dim Sum hour, I'm sure to be in for a treat.
