Farmer's markets to me are a great place to get local produce but then you also get stuff like hipster coffee, cucumber/avocado/kale water, and funky cheeses. But these wet markets are something else. Less refined, but feeling like the real deal. Here you walk around hanging cuts of meat and tanks of seafood. Take in that raw stench and realize that cow stomach hanging from a hook could be in your next bowl of noodles. Tai Po Hui is indoors with air conditioning, already one step above traditionally outdoor street stalls, but you still get that authentic feeling. Vendors are talk-shouting across the stands to each other. People are picking out the best cut of steak, the fattest fish, the plumpest chicken feet. This is where the neighborhood comes to shop, haggle, and grab cheap eats. I'm sure there are many other wet markets around Hong Kong, but this one is very large and very clean. The freshness of the food is remarkable. The shrimp are bouncing around on top of each other, the fish are still swimming energetically. And as someone who did not grow up in Hong Kong, I saw species I've never seen before, like beautiful Lilac-coloured clams and rose apples. I never went to the cooked food centre, but I'm sure it's as impressive and diverse as the ground level market. This feels like a common market for the common folk, but it can also be an exotic food journey for tourists. I cannot recommend going to a wet market enough and Tai Po Hui Market is a great choice. It's truly a unique experience to get a taste of local culture, figuratively and literally. This, of course, is juxtaposed by the fact that the parking lot is an absolute mess of Mercedes, BMWs, and all manners of rich cars from the nearby millionaires who like to live in Tai Po. They have smaller homes with small kitchens so you buy what you need for the moment not like how I shop at Costco for the month. It a way to cut back on the waste and only buy what you need. Seeing the live seafood squirm around was nothing like the grocery store. It is nice knowing your meal was not frozen but fresh. No matter which booth the service was ready and willing to sell whatever your heart desires. The streets were lined with booths and vendors as well as under the freeways had something for everyone. Knowing the language is the only way to survive these markets especially with local delights you're unfamiliar with. It's always wonderful to emerge into the local customs while traveling. During my visit in Hong Kong I found this as I was going to Tai Cheong Bakery. The Farmers Market conveniently runs through a long street from Des Veoux Road and Graham Street and is located in the center of the walkway that connects the ferry pier and the footbridge that leads to Central. The market is small compared to other markets I have seen however the amount of veggies and fruit still makes this a place to not pass up! The vendors they are pretty nice and friendly. The variety of meat that they serve is absolutely amazing. I came on a Tuesday around noon and they still had a great selection of fruits vegetables and other things as well. They also have a market called Man Kee Shing Pork Chops that you can also buy live fresh fish and many different varieties of the meat as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. On Sundays they are organized by KFBG from 11AM-5PM and Wednesdays they are organized by SEEDS from 12PM-6PM. I came on a Tuesday where they were opened from 11AM-5PM. I knew the Farmers Market was going on when I walked past the Pier on my way to Lamma, and I knew I wasn't coming back on time to buy my veggies that day. I also knew I was coming back just to do exactly that the following Sunday morning. The market is a small one, where farmers offer their produce at large tables, placed in a square shaped area. The produce is seasonal so you'll find different veggies from time to time. Some of what they sell: leafy greens, okra, cucumber, beets, bitter gourd...Most of the farmers will expect you to ask them questions and it's a great place to learn about what you eat: there are no intermediaries so prices are fair, and affordable. The Wednesday one, which is a bit smaller than Sunday's, is organized by SEED, a foundation that promotes 'sustainable lifestyle' and has helped local farmers with the marketing of their produce. They even advertise and promote its farmers on their website so that you can get to know them beforehand. They would expect you to bring your own bag and it is also advisable to get there early, for fresher, greater variety. Do you have plans this weekend? It's my older sister's favorite tofu place so we had to stop by to grab a bowl of good old hot tofu, which is like a dessert. Be aware the dining area is small and cramped. You will likely have to sit next to a stranger in close proximity. It is street food style and casual dining. Folks order, eat and go! The tofu without a doubt was smooth, silky and fresh. I'm not a huge fan but my sister really enjoyed it. I was feeling something savory and got a mix plate of Cheung Fun (rice noodle rolls), fish balls, and fish shui mai. It was alright. I didn't look too hard at the other but it seems like take-out. Once seated, there's a ton of paper menus to mark down your order. We handed it off to the workers and the food came out in less than 5 minutes. So fast! Tofu Pudding: Choose either hot or cold, sugar or sugar-free. We ordered one to share so we couldn't stuff ourselves and it was just the right amount. Super silky! Maybe it's just me but if we each had our own, I would've gotten tired of the texture real fast. The sugar version wasn't that sweet too and we ended up adding the orange/yellow sugar, which is provided at each table. Mix Deep Fried (6 pieces): If you want to try a bit of everything, you can order this sampler of various deep fried snacks. It comes with two pieces each of deep fried tofu, tofu puffs, and golden fish and soya cakes. Pretty good snack but it's made a little better with the various sauces at the table. It's not like crispy, deep fried but a little soggy already. Overall, not bad but it didn't stand out for me.
