根記 - 時菜斑腩飯

Is a good place for a quick lunch. It is located on the third floor of the Shang Wan market, it is good for groups. Lots of OLs come for lunch during noon so if u come here alone or just two to three ppl, it is likely that you will have to seat with others. But so what! The food are delicious and it's relatively cheap!! Very good deal to enjoy lunch here :D The only limitation might be the environment, if ur looking for some decent places to eat at, don't come here as it is just located in the public market.. So u can imagine the environment huh

Peanut Butter toast and milk tea!

One of my favorite places to eat in HK. This place might seem like a huge local market from the outside, but once you go to the top floor and explore within the market, you will find an non gentrified food court, one of the best place to eat if you are just looking for good cheap food. Pros: I've been to two of the places here and unfortunately I really didn't catch the names for both of them but I went to a place that sells peanut butter toasts and also bottle iced milk tea, and then also another place for lunch for satay beef over rice on a separate occasion. They were both great but the peanut butter toast/milk tea is on another level. So crunchy and soft at the same time, yet the peanut butter jam is so good from the inside almost like a lave cake but in peanut butter/toast form. The iced milk tea is in a glass bottle, perfectly balance: not too sweet and not too bitter. If you are looking for this place, I would say from the main front entrance on Queens Rd, go to the very top of the food court.. And make a right and it should be one of the very last restaurant. (They sell hot foods too) Cheap as hell because it's in a old supermarket and it's not like whole food where everything is super souped up which inevitably increases the price of food and groceries. Everything is non gentrified here which also leaves the nostalgia feeling of how old Hong Kong was 20 years ago. Cons: Under construction for a month so it won't be open to the public again until late this month :( It can get pretty busy during prime lunch and dinner hours as there are so many different restaurant here so try to come at an off peak time if possible.

Had dinner here tonight. Are with friends who ordered stuff I would not have had & it was great. The 九肚魚 and 炒蜆 were terrific. I other stuff was also great. We ate at 棟記。don't know if the other places are as good but this place is great. This cooked food center is cleaner than most others I've been to. So if you're in the area, try this place.

To be clear up front, my rating is for one of the Restaurant shop in here and not the whole market place as I only tried the place called 家和熟燒 so my rating is actually for this restaurant. So, obviously, the is not the place for you to be if you are looking for a nice fancy decor restaurant and fancy plate presentation. But the food served from this restaurant sure is on par or better than the Izakaya around! It's a hidden gem if u ask me. And the price is not expensive. My relative brought me here and boy it was great! The must try is the lamb rack (in places like these.. lol). I don't eat much lamb and I liked it too! Flavourful with the mustard sauce and soft inside... the special of that day is the fish... on my... skin is crunchy and the fish is soooo soft and juicy... Another item worth mentioning is the grilled pork feet.. it's hot, sort of crunchy on the skin and then soft inside where the soft bones are.. goes so well with the sauce... we also tried rice ball with shiso salt, nato with tofu, fried salmon ( man this thing is really yummy too!!!!), pan fried veggie, chicken kebob.. each one of them is good!! U should go and give it a try!

I gotta admit, we were a little confused when we walked into the food centre. Didn't help that they were washing up at the wet market downstairs and the floors were slippery and a little gross. When we got to the second floor, our senses were assaulted by the bright fluorescent light and the clash of melamine plates being flung into plastic pails. Trust me, you will not regret going hyperlocal. After walking through the air conditioned food centre for a bit, we settled on Dong Kee as it appeared to be the most well-patronised. The added bonus? An English menu! I had to have my sweet and sour pork fix and boy, they didn't let me down. Crunchy capsicums, crispy pork balls, doused in a mild vinegar and sweet tomato sauce. We also ordered the pea shoots, which were lightly sautéed with garlic. Must orders? The Deep Fried Noodle Fish and the spring chicken. A hearty, local meal in the city - who could ask for more?

REVIEWER # 2 Hong…read moreKong Farmers Markets have a great variety of vegetables and fruit! I am happy to say that I was able to witness that as I was here for my vacation. During my visit in Hong Kong I found this as I was going to Tai Cheong Bakery. The Farmers Market conveniently runs through a long street from Des Veoux Road and Graham Street and is located in the center of the walkway that connects the ferry pier and the footbridge that leads to Central. The market is small compared to other markets I have seen however the amount of veggies and fruit still makes this a place to not pass up! The vendors they are pretty nice and friendly. The variety of meat that they serve is absolutely amazing. I came on a Tuesday around noon and they still had a great selection of fruits vegetables and other things as well. They also have a market called Man Kee Shing Pork Chops that you can also buy live fresh fish and many different varieties of the meat as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. On Sundays they are organized by KFBG from 11AM-5PM and Wednesdays they are organized by SEEDS from 12PM-6PM. I came on a Tuesday where they were opened from 11AM-5PM. If you are ever in the area on a Tuesday afternoon I definitely recommend this place for you to try. Contact Info: seed@seed.org.hk / info@kfbg.org REVIEW 197/196

Yeah, I do love a food market. It's the lively colorful picture that always gets me. And I can't…read morehelp but smiling even wider when it's a farmer, locally grown organic market. I knew the Farmers Market was going on when I walked past the Pier on my way to Lamma, and I knew I wasn't coming back on time to buy my veggies that day. I also knew I was coming back just to do exactly that the following Sunday morning. The market is a small one, where farmers offer their produce at large tables, placed in a square shaped area. The produce is seasonal so you'll find different veggies from time to time. Some of what they sell: leafy greens, okra, cucumber, beets, bitter gourd...Most of the farmers will expect you to ask them questions and it's a great place to learn about what you eat: there are no intermediaries so prices are fair, and affordable. The Wednesday one, which is a bit smaller than Sunday's, is organized by SEED, a foundation that promotes 'sustainable lifestyle' and has helped local farmers with the marketing of their produce. They even advertise and promote its farmers on their website so that you can get to know them beforehand. They would expect you to bring your own bag and it is also advisable to get there early, for fresher, greater variety. Do you have plans this weekend? I do...you'll find me at the Central Farmers Market on Sunday morning!

So interesting to visit the Wan Chai Market with Jacky from This Is Asia Tours…read more Wan Chai was established in the 1930s as a wet market, or a local market for fresh fish, fruits, vegetables and meat. Today, you can still choose from a wide variety of fresh fish or other seafood. That is fish that are alive in a small tank swimming and thrashing. You choose your fish, or other amphibian dinner choice, and they kill, skin and scale it for you to take home and cook. Can't get much fresher than that unless you caught it yourself. Apparently they used to have poultry as well in the past. Fears of avian flu have made that market offering virtually obsolete. The selection of baskets and baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables was quite impressive. Rambutan. Longan. Durian. Cherries. Mangosteen. Water spinach. Choi sum. Grab some spices, too. There are also bakeries filled with egg tarts and pineapples buns (that don't have pineapple) and a shop that sells snake soup that does have snake. Did not sample that one. Shop like a local at the Wan Chai Wet Market.

The market was filled with trinkets, souvenirs, fruits, vegetables and seafood. It was a one of kind experience and where the locals get all their groceries. They have smaller homes with small kitchens so you buy what you need for the moment not like how I shop at Costco for the month. It a way to cut back on the waste and only buy what you need. Seeing the live seafood squirm around was nothing like the grocery store. It is nice knowing your meal was not frozen but fresh. No matter which booth the service was ready and willing to sell whatever your heart desires. The streets were lined with booths and vendors as well as under the freeways had something for everyone. Knowing the language is the only way to survive these markets especially with local delights you're unfamiliar with. It's always wonderful to emerge into the local customs while traveling. I wish I had farmers markets daily up the street from me what a treat this was!

Come around noon for the best catch of the day as that's the time when most fishermen would be bring their freshly caught seafood to the market. There are a handful of stalls where you can get all kind of seafood. The selection is all a little different so spend some time to look around and decide before purchasing! You can also able to bargain down the price if you are skilled and enjoy doing that. Shrimps, Crabs, Fish, Squid and more. After your purchase, you have the option to bring them upstairs to the food court and have one of the stalls cook them for you. Please verify the cost of cooking/ingredients before committing! There is no standard set price and after you finished eating, it would be too late to complain they overcharged you! The star here is definitely the seafood! As they are so fresh all you need to just steam them and they would taste so delicious. So if you have your own kitchen, I would also suggest buying some and cook them at home.
