So interesting to visit the Wan Chai Market with Jacky from This Is Asia Tours…read more Wan Chai was established in the 1930s as a wet market, or a local market for fresh fish, fruits, vegetables and meat. Today, you can still choose from a wide variety of fresh fish or other seafood. That is fish that are alive in a small tank swimming and thrashing. You choose your fish, or other amphibian dinner choice, and they kill, skin and scale it for you to take home and cook. Can't get much fresher than that unless you caught it yourself. Apparently they used to have poultry as well in the past. Fears of avian flu have made that market offering virtually obsolete. The selection of baskets and baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables was quite impressive. Rambutan. Longan. Durian. Cherries. Mangosteen. Water spinach. Choi sum. Grab some spices, too. There are also bakeries filled with egg tarts and pineapples buns (that don't have pineapple) and a shop that sells snake soup that does have snake. Did not sample that one. Shop like a local at the Wan Chai Wet Market.

What an experience. I truly wished I had a hotel with a kitchen because the markets in Hong Kong…read morehad so much fresh seafood. The market was filled with trinkets, souvenirs, fruits, vegetables and seafood. It was a one of kind experience and where the locals get all their groceries. They have smaller homes with small kitchens so you buy what you need for the moment not like how I shop at Costco for the month. It a way to cut back on the waste and only buy what you need. Seeing the live seafood squirm around was nothing like the grocery store. It is nice knowing your meal was not frozen but fresh. No matter which booth the service was ready and willing to sell whatever your heart desires. The streets were lined with booths and vendors as well as under the freeways had something for everyone. Knowing the language is the only way to survive these markets especially with local delights you're unfamiliar with. It's always wonderful to emerge into the local customs while traveling. I wish I had farmers markets daily up the street from me what a treat this was!

With the opening of New MTR line, Ap Lei Cha Market is now easily accessible by MTR as it is 3…read moreminute walk from Lei Tung Station! Come around noon for the best catch of the day as that's the time when most fishermen would be bring their freshly caught seafood to the market. There are a handful of stalls where you can get all kind of seafood. The selection is all a little different so spend some time to look around and decide before purchasing! You can also able to bargain down the price if you are skilled and enjoy doing that. Shrimps, Crabs, Fish, Squid and more. After your purchase, you have the option to bring them upstairs to the food court and have one of the stalls cook them for you. Please verify the cost of cooking/ingredients before committing! There is no standard set price and after you finished eating, it would be too late to complain they overcharged you! The star here is definitely the seafood! As they are so fresh all you need to just steam them and they would taste so delicious. So if you have your own kitchen, I would also suggest buying some and cook them at home.
