Mojito

Dined at the recently opened @zweliskitchen, an authentically Zimbabwean restaurant in Downtown Durham. We learned about the history of Zweli's, its owner and her influence, the culture behind the prepared meals, and the sister properties nearby. My absolute favorite dishes were the sweet potato samosas and the braised oxtail. Here's what else we ordered: -Various cocktails: Shown is the Mojito -Veggie samosas and beef samosas -Piri Piri Grilled Shrimp Skewers -Piri Piri Grilled Wings -Fried Plantains -Grilled Boerewors Sausage -Family style sides of Dori Collard Greens and Jallof Rice -Dessert: Sweet Magwinya The flavors were bold and delicioussss! The sides are sold family style and the portions are huge. The venue is cozy and quiet and perfect for date night or a business meeting. Parking is available across the street or on the street. Reservations recommended for holidays and special events.

There is a parking lot within walking distance of the restaurant located in the Brightleaf shopping center. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating & a bar. It is brightly decorated with nice decor. I was greeted warmly when I walked in. Jason & "mom" were very personable & helpful during my visit. I ordered the piri wings with Jollof rice & Chakalaka as my sides. The wings were tender, flavorful, and were served with pickled onions. The rice and beans were fresh and hot. Everything tasted so good! And my two sides were bottomless. The portion size was large & definitely enough to share. Good service & great food! I will be back for sure!

This was an average dining experience. The oxtails were quite tasty and the gravy was amazing. The portion size was small, and filled with mostly gravy and small bones. The chicken was grilled to perfection, wings were large and very moist. We really enjoyed both of the meats. The cabbages were just ok. The jollof rice was not good. It did not have any flavor and was very dry. We tried this place after eating at the Ekhaya. While we would return to Ekhaya, I would not return here.

Shrimp Skewers

I love love love the beef samosas here but unfortunately they were nit available today. However, the shrimp skewers did not disappoint. Delicious and plentiful for $12.00

Chakalaka beans. Seasoned so well with a slight sweetness. Very satisfying!

Easy to walk in during lunch. The food was made fresh and didn't take too long at all. I was glad the server was able to describe each dish as this was my first visit. Nice decor and will have to come back for dinner!!!

It was honestly so refreshing to find this healthy fast casual option on a day I needed a cleaner…read moremeal. Overall I was impressed with the variety and quality of fresh ingredients! They were in the process of training a new hire at the time, so the line took some time to move through, but I still got my food pretty quickly. I ordered the harvest crunch vegetable which had all of my favorites - the mushrooms were so flavorful and my favorite part. The only two critiques I had was that 1) I asked for half/half rice and romaine and my bowl had way too much romaine, it really overpowered all of the other ingredients that came in the bowl and 2) the tofu was not my favorite - it wasn't crispy or as flavorful as I would like it, so that's something for the plant-based community to keep in mind. That said, I imagine all of the other animal-based proteins taste better! If their tofu was improved, I would absolutely return to try some of their other unique bowl combos.

I got a wheat wrap with some steak, spinach, and mushrooms, while my wife got a mixed grain bowl with chicken and bacon. We were both very happy with our meals, and while the food wasn't cheap (about $15 a person), I didn't feel ripped off either. The website mentioned that the ingredients were high quality and that the dressings were made in house, and it definitely tasted like it! Overall, I'd definitely come back here to get a healthy meal.

"Sandwich shop just off University Dr in Durham"…read more Came here for an evening dinner with a friend. We arrived around 5:45pm, and there was ample parking, but I will say the place was HOPPING by the time we left at 6:30pm. The decor is very cute-- old-style, good seating and a bar area as well. You order at the table, and food comes to you. My dining mate got the Cypriot (Halloumi, Fig, Arugula, Tomato, Pesto) with a side of curly fries, and I wasn't very hungry so I got the Beyond Meat Chicken Tenders kids meal with a side salad. I also got a delicious bottled sparkling lemonade. Service was fine-- food comes after order, but you're mostly on your own once food is delivered, as expected. We got a couple of napkins with the food, but there are more self-serve up in the counter. Just don't expect someone to check on you or anything. The food was GREAT. My dining partner loved her sandwich (commented especially on the fig spread) and fries, and I really liked my meal as well. The side salad was surprisingly delicious, especially the addition of pickled red onion. The place was clean-- I went to the restroom, too, and everything was stocked well. Price was very fair. Overall, I'd happily come back. Easy, priced well, delicious. Not a place where you get a lot of "attention", but great for a simple meal.

The only things I didn't love were the parking and the service. Parking was weirdly tight and difficult to navigate. The folks working were efficient but not overly friendly. Maybe they had an off day; it happens. Even so, I'd go back- the food was worth it and again- lots of fantastic choices.
