pork and leek dumplings
Katherine T.

came on a friday around 5 and my boyfriend and i were the only ones there so we were seated right away! server was kind and everything came out super quickly. inside had a good amount of seating and everything looked clean. beef roll (4/5) - really good and chewy, i liked the amount of sauce it had and the meat was nice and thin. it was a good balance of everything. spicy wontons (4/5) - these had a peanut sauce, which the server informed us about as we ordered. i really enjoyed it, not your typical chili wontons. good tingle from the mala and the wontons were very soft. pork and leek open dumplings (5/5) - these were so yummy! even though both ends were open they were super juicy. i liked the corn starch bottom, it added a nice texture along with the chewy dumpling skin. cucumber salad (3/5) - good and refreshing but i could do without it next time. very garlicky, which i enjoyed. overall i'd definitely come back! there was such a wide variety of dumplings/buns that i'd like to try. they totally deserve a higher rating here, very solid food!

Had a recent visit here. The food was not bad but was nothing to write home about. The broth in the beef noodle soup needed more flavor. A few years ago, this place used to be better and was one of the best places for beef noodle soup but not anymore. They do have meat pies here which were decent and are not too commonly found at other restaurants in the area.

My family's go to for Northern Style dumplings and noodle soup dishes in the SGV. This spot has been very reliably delicious over the past 8+ years we've been going and it's still delicious. Located in a strip mall with a good sized parking lot that can get busy because of the other businesses. Service is typically fast and efficient, and our go tos are pan friend pork dumplings, pan fried bun, scallion pancake, Sour Cabbage Pho and Hot and Sour Noodles. We order these every time and always leave satisfied. I love the food here.

Cold chicken noodle with sesame sauce

It has been a while since I came here. This time no beef noodle soup but: 1. Wonton in chili oil: It has peanut sauce, garlic, chopped green onion. I added some more chili oil from the table and it was delicious 2. Zui-xiang-yuan bao-zi(bun): The filling is marinated pork and...can't tell the veggie, i think it's finally chopped mushroom. This is juicy and love the dough, soft and fresh. Good buns 3. Guo-tie(pan fried dumplings): I ordered pork with cabbage. Very good. And add some vinegar, yummy. Again, the restaurant consistently makes good and delicious food. So it's a must try. Lastly, this time, I bought frozen buns (pork) and I will update review once I try it.

Very authentic northern China buns and dumplings. pan fried buns and Chinese chives pockets are my favorite. There is only one server for the entire dining room, he did his best bust still a bit overwhelmed. Not much decor for the place, but practical and fit the theme.

Fair prices and friendly service but a little slow; we were here on a Saturday around 1pm and was seatted right away. The food tastes above average, not overly salty.

Condiments per table and sanitizer.

I had another place in mind but didn't feel like waiting on a busy weekend, so I ended up here at Zui Xiang Yuan. No wait time, empty restaurant on a weekend. I tried the Chinese beef pie, dumplings, beef noodle soup, beef rolls, cucumber salad ; the pictures looked great here so I thought why not. Bottom line is I didn't love the food here, but it wasn't terrible just not great. Service was friendly. No frills mom n pop shop I was hoping to love. Beef Pie: Very Bland. Sauce didn't help. Heavy msg aftertaste. Beef Noodle Soup: A very light broth similar to a light chicken broth mixed with beef. Needed more aromatics, the tender beef and soup had a unpleasant smell. Pork n Chives dumplings: juicy but bland. Sauce couldn't save it. Thick skin. Beef Roll: not enough sauce and veggies. Bland and very oily. Cucumber Salad: was ok. It was room temp. Probably better cold.

We ordered this Dan Dan noodle The flavor is good BUT Its extremely salty. I can only eat a little bit and I felt lightheaded after. (Due to my high blood pressure) Not recommended if you have similar health issues

Authentic, lowkey restaurant serving Taiwan/Mandarin food that makes you feel like you're eating at your family's house. We came here because we were craving Beijing-style meat pies and they did not disappoint. We also enjoyed excellent handmade dumplings and noodles. All the food was piping hot and very fresh. They also sell huge bags of frozen dumplings that you can take home. We tried their spicy Taiwan-style beef noodle soup, which was delicious. I was surprised there was no one there when we went, but I liked how there wasn't a wait and this place feels like a well-kept secret among locals who want authentic dumplings and Chinese food.

Ambiance: family style restaurant for comfort food, bright and clean inside Service: super friendly and provided useful suggestion Food: plenty choices for dumplings, bun and noodles Steamed Pork Bun - ***** 6pcs, ingredients inside the bun are pre-cooked pork meat, one of their speciality, very tender and juicy, highly recommend Spicy Sweet Potato Noodles - **** very sour and spicy, opening appetite, recommend Beef Meat Pie - ***** 4pcs, pan fried flat pie, crunchy outside and juicy inside, highly recommend Price: generous portions and affordable prices, about $25 per person for a very fulfilling meal

Little dumplings and pork pancake

Came here for breakfast and tried multiple dishes! Had a few items: the little dumplings (size of a thumb) was super cute, pork pancake, pork sticky rice roll, spicy noodles, and ice soy milk. The restaurant was very homey and had authentic Chinese breakfast food. My favorite go to has to be the spicy noodles, ice soy milk, and pork pancakes since it was so crispy and juicy.

Preserved Egg with Tofu

Food: Service: Ambiance: We used to come here a lot before Covid. I think they have changed the ownership now. Food is not as great as they used to be and the menu is very limited. The beef tendon noodle soup was good but the tendons were little taught and chewy. Chinese style leek and pork pie was bland. Out of all 3 dishes, we only like their preserved eggs with tofu. Do not expect any good service here! Parking in this plaza is very difficult. It's worth mentioning that they are dishonest because I bought 2 bags of frozen dumplings, it's tax free and pay by cash only. The lady insisted to add on my bill after I told her that I will pay cash for my meal, so I actually paid taxes on the frozen dumplings too. I was in a hurry to go so I didn't realize it until later. It's not a lot of money so I didn't bother to go back but they surely have lost a good customer here.

Inside the Pork, Shrimp, and Sea Cucumber dumpling ($32/50 pcs). Bought these frozen and cooked at home. 8/13/2022

I made a quick stop at Zui Xiang Yuan to buy their Pork, Shrimp, and Sea Cucumber frozen dumplings. They were the juiciest tasty dumplings I've ever had from local dumpling shops! They make their filling and dumpling wrappers in house. I love how there is a bite to their dumpling wrapper - it's like eating al dente noodles. What they offer in the restaurant for dine-in is also offered frozen so you can purchase them to cook on your own. Each bag of frozen dumplings comes in 50 pieces and the price varies depending on the filling you get. For the Pork, Shrimp, and Sea Cucumber, it was $32 a bag. You can pan fry them, boil them, or steam them. Each dumpling was filled to the brim and you can see/taste the individual ingredients (shrimp, pork, and sea cucumber)! This is my new favorite place for homemade dumplings!

We've been at their location in Tustin and I heard this one was better than that location I was really excited about it. Teson is really good too, so I had a pretty good expectation on this location. Upon arrival, we were immediately seated by the staff member and she was pretty efficient and on top of things. I have attached here, but the ambience is pretty lively, but also not too loud. It was an enjoyable experience where you can talk with each other and be able to hear one another. At the same time, they had a clean and classy decor to their interior design. We ordered the stirfry lamb with cumin, shredded potato, and the chili oil fish fillet. The Lamb - 5/5 was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a very nice heat to it. Be careful because this is not for those sensitive to spicy food, but if you do like spicy, this has such a nice kick to it. The shredded potato - 5/5 one of my favorite dishes to substitute for the rice. Don't be deceived by how it looks. It definitely has a kick and can numb your mouth; however, you can still taste the pickled flavor in each bite. The chilli oil fish - 5/5 one of my most favorite dishes from both locations. Although the spiciest of the dishes, you taste the flavor through each bite. The dish is perfectly cooked and just dissolves in your mouth. Overall I am extremely satisfied with our visit and recommend coming here if you're ever in the area!!

The squid tentacles were tiny, and the dish felt like it was mostly filled with mixed vegetables. For $25.99, it definitely felt a little like a rip-off. On the brighter side, the Tea Smoked Pork Rib was really good--super flavorful and probably my favorite dish of the meal. That said, most of the menu is on the pricier side, and the portions aren't very generous, so value-wise it's a bit questionable. Service was just okay. No one really checked in on us, and we had to wave our hands a few times to get attention when we needed something. Overall, solid flavors in some dishes, but the portion size and pricing hold it back from being a full 5 stars.

Most of the food here is delicious and authentic, and it definitely has more of a homey feel. We got the mapo tofu (delicious), wonton in chilli oil (delicious), golden corn (basically deep fried corn with salted egg) was the surprising standout, and deep fried intestines/ offal was good too. The happy chicken was a tad on the dry side, will skip. The pork belly dish was good too and a nice respite from the stinging heat of all the dishes. This place is not for the faint of heart, if you're afraid of spicy food. However, if you're adventurous and like a little kick to your dishes , this is the place to be. I did ask for my kung pao chicken to be less spicy, but I ordered the Dan Dan noodles to be regular spicy, and it was quite delicious. The noodles had the requisite springiness in its bite. The Jamaican lady sitting at the next tables shared a spicy Tin Foil pork rib with me, it was also delicious. She also recommended the Happy Chicken dish. Finding out the best dishes is easy, if you manage to talk to the regular customers. Generally, it's really hard to find people like me who occasionally like to adventure out for spicy food, but this place hits the spot when you have a dried chili craving. It's a good restaurant to bring your good friends, there are several large round tables available, several rectangular tables with booth seats or chairs, and the portions are very good for sharing. There is parking lot located at the back of the restaurant, and also some limited street parking. In the dining area, there's a mounted television showing you the chefs who are cooking Szechuan dishes, twirling around the red dried chilis in the wok pan, dishing out the food, and you see people enjoying and eating the food, great entertainment if you're eating by yourself. Do check out this restaurant when a craving for delicious spicy food comes upon you, this place won't disappoint you!

It was our first time there, so I was very excited to try new foods. Unfortunately the food didn't really meet my expectations. We ordered 4 dishes. Sichuan style red cooked pork, Chongqing mouthwatering chicken, Sichuan chili sautéed pork, and cilantro wrapped tofu skin. The Sichuan style red pork had some tough and dry pork from being overcooked. Possibly from being reheated in the microwave. Half of the dish was decent, while the other half just wasn't right. We ended up taking leftovers home, so I could make soup with the chewy pork. The deep fried hard boiled egg was the best part of this dish. It's a bummer as there was only one egg. I give this dish 7 out of 10. The Chongqing mouthwatering chicken was pretty good. It was very spicy and nutty. I didn't like the fact that they served pieces of chopped up boned-in chicken. There were sharp pieces of flats/wingettes, so please be careful. The worst part was that I found a piece of chicken neck. I wish they had served boneless chicken. 6 out of 10 for this dish. The Sichuan chili sautéed pork dish was the best thing we ordered!! I give it 10 out of 10. Mild spicy and garlicky.... soooo delicious!! The green chili pieces are just amazing as they complement the pork meat. I would come back just for this dish. The cilantro wrapped tofu skin dish was very good. However, I don't know if it's worth $3.99 for 2 sticks. Service was decent. One of the girls didn't seem to speak English. My old uncle asked for sriracha, and the waiter went out of his way to get us sriracha. He actually opened a new bottle just for my uncle. There was no ice in the water. Soon after leaving the restaurant I felt very thirsty, so we had to stop by a grocery store to buy ice cold Coca-Cola. It was nice that they have booth seating areas. A Rare Gem of Authentic Sichuan Cuisine Yesterday, I…read morediscovered a hidden gem: Chuan Wa Zi (川娃子)!Szechuan Delicious! Every single dish I tasted--from the authenticity of the flavors to the freshness of the ingredients and the precision of the wok heat (huohuo)--absolutely blew me away. Usually, entering a Sichuan restaurant means being blasted by "spicy, spicy, spicy" and "numbing, numbing, numbing," with choices limited to just water-boiled, sour soup, or mala flavors. However, the chef at Chuan Wa Zi uses only the freshest ingredients to create dishes that are pure and original. My friends were all full of praise! The Highlights of the Meal * Morel Mushroom & Chicken Consommé: Served in a double-boiled stew pot, the unique sweetness of the morels combined with the delicate fragrance of the chicken was so addictive I couldn't stop at just one bowl. * Braised Lamb with Radish: This featured skin-on young lamb--tender and perfectly cooked yet retaining a delightful chew. The radish was braised until deeply flavorful, and the cilantro garnish was the perfect touch, elevating the aroma without overpowering the richness of the lamb. There was zero gamey smell. Eating the lamb skin provided a boost of collagen--a truly nourishing and warming dish. * Chengdu Baby Cabbage (Er Cai): Stir-fried in a rich broth, it was incredibly sweet with a hint of bitterness that perfectly balanced the richness of the lamb. According to traditional wisdom, "five flavors nourish the five organs." Sichuan's baby cabbage is only in season for one month during spring. It's known to clear "heart fire," refresh the mind, and improve sleep. * Sautéed Pork with Celtuce (Lettuce Stem): The pork was incredibly silky and tender, achieved not through baking soda or heavy starch, but purely through masterly knife work and heat control. Paired with the crisp celtuce, it was a perfect harmony of "silky" and "crunchy." * Sichuan Jelly Noodles (Liangfen): Added at the last minute, Jing (host of Oushang Beauty Spa) claimed these are the most authentic and smooth jelly noodles in Greater Los Angeles. Made purely from mung bean starch with no additives, the texture was clean and soft. The seasoning was light and balanced--just a simple blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, vinegar, chili oil, garlic, and cilantro. From start to finish, there was no overwhelming spiciness or discomfort--just a comforting and refreshing dining experience that leaves you wanting more. House-Made Specialties It's worth mentioning that the owner personally prepares all the cold appetizers, such as the Smoked Pressed Duck and the platter of Handmade Sausages, Cured Pork (Larou), Cured Ribs, and Spicy Pork Head Meat. They were fragrant and meaty without any of the oily aftertaste often found in over-dried meats. We saw many people calling in to order these platters to go as snacks for drinks (xiajiu), and we definitely plan to do the same next time! Chef's Recommendations & Hidden Menu They offer a variety of other specialties like Pork Tripe in Golden Soup, Spicy Eel with Glass Noodles, and Basu "Glutton" Bullfrog. Some dishes, like our Lamb and Chicken Soup, must be pre-ordered by phone. Their classic Sichuan stir-fries--Flash-fried Kidney, Mao Xue Wang, Laziji (Chili Chicken), and Twice-cooked Pork--are all spectacular. They even serve Xian Shao Bai (Savory Steamed Pork Belly), a nearly lost classic that requires incredible knife skills and offers a perfect balance of sweet and savory. A Sweet Ending To wrap up, the owner's wife treated us to their Handmade Fermented Rice Soup (Laozao) with four-colored mini tangyuan (glutinous rice balls). Each color had a different natural flavor--sour fruit, rich sesame, and red bean--with no artificial coloring. The soup had a delicate fermented aroma and silky egg drops, providing a perfect ending to our feast. Closing Thoughts It has been a long time since I've had food this authentic that wasn't "scary spicy." I am truly grateful to find a restaurant that treats cooking as an art and operates with such a strong conscience and craftsmanship.
