I went there a second time (as of end of Sep 2026 still open) and asked to tone down the salt level. Food still came out too salty. Steamed egg and eggplant thousand year old eggs were the only dishes I can eat. Tried the hot sour fish tripe (too chewy) and chili pepper duck (all bone scraps shards and no meat). Steamed rice cost extra to order but came out dry and hard
This place is spacious and clean. They have their own lot so parking is easy to find. This place probably has more people for dinner but for lunch/late lunch, it's not crowded at all. We felt lucky to stumble in after we walked out on Sam Woo next door since they were way too crowded. Food: Good overall. The fried rice was fragrant and easy to eat. Always a good choice when you don't know what to get from a new place. The shredded tofu salad was refreshing and light! The stinky tofu wasn't very stinky so even my mom could eat it. I prefer more "funk" when it comes to it but it wasn't bad. It had a really good crispy skin that was super satisfying to eat. My mom said the steamed fish tasted super good. Fresh and didn't have a weird fishy taste or anything. Getting my mother's seal of approval can be quite hard so I'd recommend giving this place a chance! We certainly chose quite safe dishes but their menu is large. I'm sure you're bound to find something you like :) Service: Decent but not very attentive. They didn't really check on us at all and almost forgot my drink. I'm quite easy going though so it was fine. I'd honestly come back again when we're in the area!

A relatively new addition to the SGV food scene - and wow, did we feast. Eight hungry humans, 15 glorious dishes. Why? Because restraint is overrated and curiosity is delicious. Oink oink! The whole fish and bullfrog were definite standouts--packed with flavor and beautifully prepared. The eggplant with century egg was another highlight: rich, savory, and surprisingly balanced. We're already plotting our return. There are still dishes on that menu that haven't met our chopsticks yet, and that just feels wrong.
They are new so a lot of dishes ran out if you come on an unlucky day. But food is very good, they have that smoky and garlicky taste typical of Hunan food. They also dont skimp on the meat and service is fast. The restaurant is big and there's a dedicated parking lot at the front.
Delicious Hunan dishes. Dined here tonight with my family and we ordered a variety of dishes. My favorite dish was the eggplant with thousand year egg. Very simple dish but nice pairing with the other spicy dishes we had. Service was decent and attentive when needed. Very attentive when we needed things like extra rice and water. Dined here on a Friday night and they had a few tables along with a party in the private room.
"A Rather Disappointing Dining Experience" Excited to try a new restaurant, we ordered the signature pickled fish dish. After a long wait--during which we finished three vegetarian dishes and a cold appetizer--the main course finally arrived. It looked decent at first glance, but the first bite revealed an overpowering fishy taste. The ingredients were clearly not fresh, failing to mask the unpleasant odor. When we asked our friends for their opinions, they all agreed: the fish was unpleasantly fishy and stale. We called over the staff, and two servers arrived. Instead of apologizing, their immediate response was defensive: "This dish couldn't possibly be stale because we use frozen fish, not fresh fish!"* I was baffled. First，how could they dismiss our feedback without even tasting it? Second，shouldn't they apologize first instead of shifting blame? Third，since when does frozen fish guarantee freshness or eliminate fishiness? What kind of flawed logic is that? The two servers stared at us and asked, "So, what do you want us to do?"We requested a replacement dish--stir-fried lamb. Another 20-minute wait later, it arrived. The first bite: overwhelmingly salty**. The second bite: **still unbearably salty**. Was the salt shaker accidentally dumped into the wok? Or was this some kind of spiteful seasoning retaliation? The most frustrating part? No apologies, no follow-up, and zero concern for our experience.** From start to finish, the service was indifferent, leaving us completely neglected.
An tasty and relatively affordable way to dine on classic Hunan cooking! We ordered the eggplant, braised pork and hunan-style fish, and was very full and satisfied with our purchase for 3 people. Rice is charged per person, but absolutely necessary to absorb the flavors. Some of the flavors are a bit toned down (possibly to adjust to the larger local population of Cantonese and Taiwanese customers) but still hits the nodes necessary for an authentic experience. A new and welcome addition to the 626!
Service: A young guy might be a partner, as he's giving advise to the kitchen how to do certain dishes...) He's very friendly attentive. Food: 4.5-star Ordered 3-item, other than portions is kinda small (2-peep sharing 3 dishes yet not enough...) 1). Organic Cauliflower 干鍋机台山花椰菜 4-star Stirred fried style w/small amount of diced leeks for garnish. I can also taste the hint of cumin in flavor yet I rather not to hv it I see they also put some drops of pork cracklings for the flavors, and it really highlights the dish-reminding me home cooking from my parents generation 2). 剝椒全魚House special chili sauce w/whole fish: 5-star Wow! It's the best dish over all Chili sauce is hot fresh delicious Fish is tender tasty as much of rice u like to pair with! 3) Chili Stir fried Frog 4.5-star 干鍋牛蛙 Portion is small, frog meat is not enough to feed 2-peep... Other than the small portion, the Shisu (purple herbal leaves, which is typical flavoring used in Hunan cuisine, and u can see it in Japanese cuisine for garnish) and colorful diced fresh green, red, and yellow chilies are sure a spicy bright flavors to this dish! This place needs to post an English name on the web site to promote and to expose their business. I find this spot when I was driving by in the area in the corner of 5th street on Valley Blvd. Plenty of parking in their lot. I encourage all foodies who enjoy spicy (not numb) Hunan style cuisine to come give a try!

Nice , large well appointed Hunan style restaurant with a number of interesting dishes, particularly turtle and frog items. Finally glad to see them open as this was under construction for many months. And strangely the interior isn't much different from the predecessor Nine Dining. Nine Dining had not only taken over the space formerly occupied by Cafe Spot, and then later New Haojing, but took over the entire shopping center to build a large upscale skewer centric restaurant. That experiment failed fairly quickly, but hopefully Xianglalou will make a go of it.
Back to SoCal from vacation... The first thing I was craving? Chinese food!! And specifically... Hunan-style cuisine! My must-order? The Hunan-style Stir-Fried Pork. The spicy kick is EVERYTHING. My husband is a huge clam lover, so we couldn't skip the flavorful clams. This clam dish definitely kept him calm. Craving that smoky wok hei? You have to try the Mushroom & Minced Pork Eggplant Pot. Now, for something non-spicy... The Hunan Meicai Braised Pork is a must! It's the perfect pairing with their fluffy steamed buns. Oh, and I love their huge banquet room! Overall, the food here is solid, and the portions are generous. I ordered the smashed cucumbers, the dried pot stir fried pork intestines, and the sour and spicy noodles. The cucumbers and dried pot were both solid. They were nicely seasoned although I was expecting the pot to be lit when it came to the table. Usually, it continues to boil and cook while you eat it. Still, the flavors were on point, and portions were generous. The biggest disappointment were the sour and spicy noodles. Honestly, I was super excited about the sour and spicy noodles because I was craving what they showed in the picture on the menu. However, when they brought the noodles, they looked and tasted nothing like the picture. They tasted fine but not delicious (maybe I would have felt differently if I expected what they delivered). When I checked with the server about whether it was the correct dish, their response was that it was correct. When I stated that it didn't look like the picture, their only response was "yes, this is how we make that here." It wasn't a very satisfactory response. In addition, I got the rice noodle variation thinking that it would look like the picture, and that noodle did not go well with the style of their noodles. It seems like they should update their menu pictures to actually look like the food they are serving. Because of the noodles not being as pictured, I would probably rate our overall meal at 3.5 stars. However, the taste of the other items and overall value were the reasons to bump it up to 4 stars. The decor is simple but nice. I would say it's not too fancy but good for a more casual date night or outing with friends. I would likely come here again, but I will skip the noodles next time. read more

The service is incredibly bad The first time for me to experience this kind of service, no greeting, no introduction when we said we were the first time to be here. He seemed like don't want to talk to us. And the dishes are below ordinary, I don't eat celery but there is tons of it in the dish. read more

We tried three nonspicy dishes and all three are pretty good. The sauce for the Loofah with egg is pretty neutral and the loofah tastes fresh. The steamed pork with preserved vegetable is better than most from other places because of the slightly spiciness. The saltiness of the preserved vegetable is just right. Steamed scallops is quite oily but tastes very good because they put a lot of garlic (I like garlic). Our overall experience is a good one and I do want to come back to try some of the other dishes. Service is not bad, and the place is nice and clean because it is newly renovated. read more

Great meal at Xianglalou! The food was delicious and authentic - you can tell they don't mess around with the flavors. Just be warned, when they say spicy they really mean it. I was sweating but couldn't stop eating because it tasted so good lol. Service was solid and the place has a nice vibe. Definitely coming back, maybe with some milk next time! Highly recommend if you can handle the heat. read more
