I placed an order through the Zippy's app at 5:53 PM, and shortly after, I was given an estimated pickup time of 6:09 PM. I arrived at Zippy's around 6:15 PM, but my order was not ready. At 6:23 PM, I received a text message stating that my order was ready. I went to the pickup window, let the employee know I had received the notification, and provided my name. They checked and told me that my order was still not ready. At 6:40 PM, my order was STILL not ready. I checked again, and they once again told me it was not ready. To make matters worse, one of the items I ordered was a grilled cheese sandwich for my 11-year-old daughter. When they finally brought it out, the sandwich was cold, and they were prepared to give it to me that way. I had to ask for a fresh one. I then waited another five minutes for them to prepare a hot, fresh grilled cheese sandwich. This was, by far, the worst service I have ever experienced at this Zippy's location. The food may have been good, but the excessive wait time, inaccurate pickup notification, and poor customer service completely took away from the experience. Unfortunately, the food was not very "tasteful" when the overall experience was this frustrating. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and addresses the issues with the ordering and pickup process, as well as the level of customer service provided.
I've eaten here a couple of times in the last few months. Both times in the late morning...so, I've avoided the rush hours. Mostly empty this Monday morning in the Koko Marina Shopping Center as I wait for Costco to open. Their September special is the KFC ( Korean Fried Chicken ) and Chili Mixed plate for...$9.99. Ordered via their app and selected the no bean chili option. This mixed plate is definitively a deal at the special price - which is good thru 08.Oct. KFC was still fairly crispy ( with the sauce ) and tasty. For myself, no bean Zippy's chili is always excellent. Also, served on a bed...make that a bed sheet of cabbage and mac salad. I was full...and I eat like a pig. Dining area is spacious and scenic with a view of the marina. Plenty of parking stalls are available. They have the various Pacs available in September, to include a Char Siu Pork Pac on Fridays only.
I love Zippys. Order was taken promptly and cashier was great. We had the Portuguese sausage breakfast, Korean chicken breakfast, side corned beef hash, and French toast. First off, the dining area needs some TLC! The food was good, Korean chicken always hits, but the rice was hard and dry on both plates.. The corned beef hash was 70% potato and 30% beef, it was ok but preferred to have more beef to potato ratio. French toast was perfect!
This Zippy's location has always been good and consistent since I was a child. The flavors don't change, the quantity is good, you'll leave satisfied. This location is nice as it's on the water in Hawaii Kai. The Napoleon bakery has less of a selection than it used to have, or maybe I've been going too late. (which might be a good thing!)
Sorry to my Hawaiian bruddas but Zippy's is straight trash. The seating is outdoors so there's hella birds pecking at your feet hoping you drop some rice or Mac salad. The food is comparable to any Hawaiian food spot like L&L or Ohana. I thought it was gonna be much better because all my island friends rave about it. The pricing is insane too. The value is not there at all. I'm never coming back to any Zippy's ever again. Zip PAC Deluxe: chicken was crispy but had no good flavor. Chili is trash. Fish wasn't good either. Loco Moco: nothing special. Tastes like a cheap loco Moco Chicken trio: Korean fried chicken was hard and not chewable. At least the food was edible. I had to eat it because we spent so much money on it already.
The food is always hot and delicious. Service is professional, polite & fast. Beautiful waterfront location in Koko Marina. Take out only. The dining room closed s while ago. Great Sweets, donuts and cakes too.
In 1966, brothers Francis and Charles Higa started the first Zippy's restaurant on So. King St. in Honolulu. Today, there are 24 Zippy locations on Oahu, Maui, and the Mainland. Almost all locations have a take-out counter, dine-in area, and a bakery. It is now run by Jason Higa, 2nd generation of the original owners. Zippy's is a popular casual dining chain in HI known for its stews, chili, and other hearty comfort food that locals grew up with. It serves American, Japanese, Chinese, and Hawaiian fusion food. They're also known for their Zip Pac bentos, Zip mein, Korean fried chicken, their daily specials, and a wide range of menu items for all ages of diners. Zippy's, in the Koko Marina Shopping Center, opened in 1987 for the HI Kai community with a beautiful and spectacular marina view of the water, boats, and ducks. After Covid, Zippy's Koko Marina struggled to keep its dining area fully staffed, and with the dining area in need of an uplift and rising food costs, the dining room was closed on 2/5/23, as it reverted back to Koko Marina Center management. Since the closure of the dining room, my observations include the following: * We miss the dining room, as it had a perfect view of the marina, and it was a place where family or friends could congregate to just "talk story." Young adults would congregate there, as it was a safe place to do so. There is only a covered outside area of booths near the takeout counter, which does not serve the same purpose. No dine-in area, so no breakfasts that can be ordered all day. * Restrooms are far away in a separate building next door. You will need to take the elevator which is further down in the building, if you are unable to use the stairway. You will also need a code. When the dining room was open, there was a restroom right next to the dining room, but Zippy's no longer maintains it. * Takeout service seems sporadic, and I would not be surprised if one day, Zippy's management decides to eliminate the Koko Marina location. Over the years, there has been criticism that Zippy's has increased their prices while at the same time decreased its portion amounts. It's also been said that they weigh their portion sizes for consistency. But despite this, many of us continue to enjoy their menu offerings from time to time. Many who have moved outside of HI occasionally return home, and one of the first things they do is to eat at Zippy's! Our son and his family, who live in Toronto, ensures that they have a Zippy's meal when they return home for a visit. My go-to favorites at Zippy's include their Zip Pac, chicken/chili combo, and chili with rice bowl. Limited staff manning the take-out orders are long-time employees who are efficient and helpful in answering your questions. The open-air area near the take-out counter is clean, spacious, and provides tables to eat your take-out. Zippy's has been a very vocal supporter of the HI Kai community, as it supports youth and family organizations, schools, and community programs. And it was common for many of us to redeem fundraiser tickets for chili, meat sauce or cornbread. Zippy's also sells its Kokua Pac, with a portion of the proceeds donated to various charities. Hours of operation of the takeout section is daily from 6a to 10p. Lots of free parking in the Koko Marina Shopping Center parking lot that is shared with other businesses. Not sure if this is the last hurrah for Zippy's Koko Marina, but we are grateful that they are still here for us and hope that they continue to be part of the HI Kai community. Support local!
I want to give this specific zippy's a 5, just based on pure nostalgia but it's really taken a hit :( they closed the dine in area and most of the bakery! which was a HUGE bonus, they've cut down on workers (obviously) which has clearly impacted service, the outdoor dining area is basically bare minimum. However the workers are always 5 stars, the food is sometimes a hit or miss but I think their management or zippy's owners needs to revisit and revamp this location! Hawaii Kai is a "go to" tourist spot but also a home for residents. The local feel and nostalgia is almost gone and I HOPE they work to bring it back! After that ramble (lol) our go to bfast (fried rice, corned beef hash, omelette) was off the charts this am (ate it so fast I don't even have evidence) lol they have a convenient texting service that lets you know when your order is ready and are to updating the pick up area. Basically, please visit to keep this gem in our area!
Bakery side needs to be condemned for health hazards. Algae or mold covering the inside of the bakery case. Small bugs crawling over the donuts and platters and a fly freely flying around in the pastry case. The lack of hygiene and maintenance here is astounding. We threw away our take out food after seeing this as I can't imagine what the kitchen looks like if the pastry case in the front looks like this.
Have been coming here since I was in high school, it's one of the best zippys! Had a bowl of chili rice with garlic bread, it was decadent as always!
Sadly there must be only one cook. Premade Portuguese bean soup and chili with a breakfast took more than 25 minutes. Staff was friendly but they need more help. Management is setting them up for failure and frustrated customers. Dining area is run down. Fried rice and corned beef hash had no taste.
Stay away from this Zippy's if you value your health. They have mold/algae growing in plain sight. How many workers and managers must have seen this gross stuff on the bakery window yet decided to do nothing about it? Let that sink in for a second. The outdoor dining area has rust, dirt, and broken materials all over the place. I was going to order food but changed my mind after seeing the state of things and instead ordered a coffee. The coffee was lukewarm - they couldn't even get that right. This Zippy's is an embarrassment and brings shame to all the other Zippy's on this island. The owner should be ashamed.
It's Zippys what could I expect. The food was dry and bland. I got a special the mini roast turkey and this is what I received. No salad or stuffing which is what was said on the menu. I mean I do manage a restaurant and hate to leave reviews if it ain't positive but I called and was out on hold for over 20 minutes. But seriously? I understand that mistakes happen but how on earth do you send something like this out? It was slow and not busy inside, not to sure about take out but still. If you just take a look at it wouldn't you think where the stuffing ? Or the cranberry? I got a mini so this was $13 without tax and tip. I should have just gone and got a microwaveable dinner for half the cost. Ridiculous

I got the Korean fried chicken salad bowl. Nothing special to it, the salad was a mixed salad & the Asian sauce was a bit thick, but tasty. The fried chicken was actually very good! My family got the sweet & sour chicken (not pictured) the plate looked very unappetizing & the chicken was drenched in sauce & was a miss for us. The service was quick & the views were great. We came from the Koko head trail & stopped for a quick bite before heading back to Waikiki where we were staying. The ambiance was nice, the beach views made the stop worth it & it was quite empty for a Saturday afternoon. read more
I didn't take pictures because it was crowded. People were still there hanging out...and enjoying themselves. I ordered a Korean Chicken plate, favorite. It was sweet, shoyu, garlicky and intense flavor that permeates your palate. In other words, do not go on a date or kiss your favorite person. My friend was waiting at his house where we were preparing to rent it out. He got a Ted's burger and not get me one. So, I killed him with the ono Korean Chicken! He looked at me...my favorite was his expression. I offered half. He said I'll save it for dinner. I ate three pieces and left seven for him. I'm a good friend...Ciao! read more
Revisiting the east side of the island with my friend, I decided to eat at Zippy's at the koko marina center. Sadly, the dining area is closed as well as the bathrooms at Zippy's. There is a bathroom, but it is at the building on the left side of zippy's on the second floor of the building, next to the florist. Food was the same as other zippy's, fresh and fried chicken was crunchy. Even though it was outside, we could eat our lunch in peace having it next to the pier with a scenic serene view of the ocean. Service was fast, but tables were a bit dirty, and a table also didn't have a tabletop, and at least there weren't bird turd since there is a sign posted "don't feed the birds," but there was a dove that was persistent in hanging near our table even if we tried shooing it away. read more

Zippy's at Koko Marina is not zippy at all. Waited 16 minutes for my Kokua Pac. While I was waiting. I went over to Napoleon's Bakery. Wow! It really looked unappealing. The display case was rusted and the glass was not clean. The counter had dirty plywood to close the counter. Won't be going back to Zippy's anytime soon. Hope they can spruce things up! read more
Sunday, February 5, 2023, will be the last day to dine in at this Koko Marina location of Zippy's... It was shocking news... Donna O. suggested that we pay our final respects to this iconic restaurant. Gosh - this Zippy's has the best view of the marina... I remember bringing Vienna (from Los Angeles) here after we hiked to the Makapu'u Lighthouse. We had a satisfying, convenient, and relatively inexpensive meal. I've been here at various other times with my family and my classmates from high school... Well... It was nice to visit one last time with Donna, Bruddah Fran, Peter Y., and Kenzie. An era is closing up for Zippy's Koko Marina. What do I mean by that??? For the longest time, the Zippy's Restaurant at the Koko Marina Shopping Center had two eatery areas - 1. Zippy's had a full service restaurant if you chose to dine inside of an enclosed air conditioned area. The restaurant had a nice view of the bay, a/c of course, and someone will serve you your food at your table. 2. On the other side of the restaurant, Zippy's also had a "take-out" area, where you can walk up to the ordering counter, place your food order, & pay for your food. When you food is ready, they will call your order number, then you go back up to the counter and pick up your food. The "take-out' area also has seating, but there is no air conditioning. The seating area is covered, but it's an open air seating area. In recent years, times have changed.........I think a lot of businesses are facing a shortage of workers, and of course overall cost has gone through the roof with inflation! After hearing on the local news (last week) that the Koko Marina Zippy's was gonna close shop on the "restaurant side", a few of my Yelp buddies decided to make our pilgrimages to the Koko Marina Zippy's to eat our very last meal. Of course since we already had a big meal at Repetti's early that day, Zippy's was our so called "night cap" for dessert. What better way to end it with some Custard Pie & Coffee???? For you folks that don't know about Zippy's..........Zippy's has a fabulous bakery called Napoleon's Bakery, and I must say they make a fabulous Custard Pie!!!! Sad that they will be closing down half of the restaurant, but on the bright side, Zippy's isn't going anywhere, as they are keeping the Zippy's "take-out" area open inside of the Koko Marina Shopping Center! It's nice to know if you're on the east side of the island, you can still get your Zippy's fix! read more

It's Zippy's... what can I say. It happens to be the closest one to my home, so it's the one I frequent the most. The good news is that it has a fantastic view of the marina, which actually makes your fried chicken taste better! Haha The food is consistent no matter what Zippy's you go to. I always get the mini fried chicken plate with two scoops rice and Orange bang. My second favorite plate is the spaghetti. The wonton min is not that good, trust me. In addition to their plate lunches, they have some decent breakfast options and bentos, and of course amazing desserts! The service here is slow as molasses, but again, it's Zippy's. I don't think I've ever been to a speedy Zippy's. Come for the view! read more
You can never go wrong with comfort food. Right after a nice view of the sunrise and you went on a mornkng swim in the ocean, heading down to Zippy is not a bad idea. They have simple local food that makes you miss local food. We order eggs and pancakes for the morning. Lots of food for 3 people and it was yummy!! The waitress were nice and helped us if we needed help. You can never go wrong here! read more

Ordered via the app. Was there early so waited a few minutes til it was close to the pick up time. Got my order 15 minutes after the pick up time. If it wasn't for covid. I would have the a lower rating. read more
Recently tried the Chicken Katsu platter, which is about 10 servings of chicken katsu on a bed of cabbage on the bottom for about $37. Came with a bunch of Katsu sauce that were individually wrapped, which was really convenient also. Platter came wrapped with rubber bands to help secure it. Perfect platter to bring to your ohana for parties!! It was tasty and exactly what we were expecting from Zippy's. read more
Ah, Zippy's. This is like going back to your parents house for dinner after being away for many years. You don't quite remember how the food tastes, how the food looks, and how much you actually miss their food. Zippy's was like that for me. I used to go to it quite frequently when I was in high school. It was THE hangout spot after prep football games, win or lose (usually), or after hours of intense basketball games with my friends. I've pretty much tried the entire menu since I like to try different things, but after 15+ years, I don't remember! And I have never thought about going there since. Back to the present day, my wife said she wanted Fried Chicken! I started to think about several places and searched on Yelp, but all of them are in town, so nothing was quick and convenient. Wait a minute! Zippy's has fried chicken! Can order online too? Nice! Curbside pickup? Even better! Zippy's menu has not changed one bit. Everything offered is pretty much the same 15 years ago. Besides the price! $3.35 for one piece of fried chicken! Obviously, ordering one piece isn't the best deal. The more, the better. There's a 9-, 15-, and 21-pack. We opted for the 9-pack for $25 total. After placing an order online, it gives you a choice to pick up ASAP or at a specific time. If ASAP, it'll tell you the estimated time your order will be ready, so you don't need to rush there. This Zippy's is located in the Koko Marina Shopping Center in Hawaii Kai. It's all the way in the back corner. There's plenty of parking on that side. I believe it's still takeout only, but you can sit on the outdoor tables and enjoy the view of the marina. Picking up was easy. You should receive an email after you place your order. It'll have a link to press when you arrive and parked in the designated stalls right in front. The person who brought out our food was friendly and upbeat. The smell coming out of the box was intoxicating. It was so hard to not just grab a fried chicken and start eating while I was driving, but I held on for the 15 minutes to drive home, change clothes, and wash hands for 20 seconds. Just like eating a home cooked meal made by your parents or grandparents, the first bite of the crispy and tasty skin and moist and tender chicken brought back a flood of memories, a sense of comfort, a warmth, an ease, a familiarity, a calm. Perhaps I'm exaggerating. Now by all means, it's not the best fried chicken. It wasn't packed with flavor, or deep fried nicely. There were some dry parts. Some parts were fried too much to a dark brown. Some parts needed taste. Those are minor issues. Overall, still a dang pretty good piece of fried chicken with a familiar taste and texture. read more
I was so sad to find out that this restaurant will be closing for good next week. We came in for a last meal and enjoy the gorgeous views of the marina. We ordered our food and added the complete meal extra. The salad was nice and fresh but the roll was tiny and soon turned into stone as most breads do after its been nuked in the microwave. We ordered the mini miso salmon and to my surprise, the piece of salmon was just TINY! I've been coming here since I was in college which is a long long time ago. I'll miss the views, the great servers that we have met and the food from the past. We certainly won't miss the subpar food which has been the norm here lately. Looking around at a very empty dining room during dinner hours, it's not too difficult to understand how the demise of this place came to be. read more

Zippy's an essential in Hawaii! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, Zippy's has got you covered. This post hike meal was the Kokua Pac, which included Korean fried chicken, Portuguese sausage, hot dog, and spam over a bed of rice. The chicken was extremely juicy, sweet and crispy and was by far my favorite thing! And you can never go wrong with spam and Portuguese sausage which were a solid choice as well. This location is still closed for dine in and outdoor seating sadly, even though they have the space for it. Call in and order ahead to get your meal faster! read more
