We went here based on their online menu that was totally different when we got there. Ordered risotto twice because first batch was undercooked. Second batch was the same. 3 of us got burgers medium and they were dry. I ordered last so I ordered mine rare. It was raw. They gave us a cereal bowl size popcorn for $6. The cheese tray was $20 and there was 1 ounce of each of the 3 cheeses to share around the table. The smoked oysters were $13 and there were 3 little oysters on the plate. I'd been wanting to check this place out since I read about it in Southwest's magazine on one of my flights. Finally made my way here! We got there before happy hour ended, and it's a good deal. Monday - Friday 5PM - 7 PM, $4 off house drinks and lower prices for some appetizers. The waitress was nice enough to take our 2nd round order before happy hour ended, but waited to bring them out until we were ready (even after HH ended). First, the drinks. $12 regularly and $8 during happy hour. Barnum Was Right: This was one of our waitress's recommendations when I said I prefer sweeter drinks. It was good, but not memorable. Petit Zinc: The aftertaste of this reminded me of an orange creamsicle. I'd get this again. Deviled eggs $5 HH: These were good. It's hard to top deviled eggs with bacon once you've had them in life. So now deviled eggs without just seem incomplete to me. Marinated chicken kebabs $9 HH: I'm usually not a chicken fan, but these were good. The chicken pieces are small, so each bite is flavorful. I really liked the cabbage slaw it came with. Burger $16: This was a solid burger. I would've liked if it was a little more juicy. The fries were good, I'd ask to add feta cheese to them next time. The burger tasted even better when I added the cabbage slaw and tzatziki that came with the chicken kebabs. Greek lasagna $19: This was my first time ever trying Greek lasagna, so I don't have others to compare it to. For me, it's too much meat and not enough cheese, so I'd pass on this next time. What a hidden(?) gem! Great cozy restaurant and their service was fantastic. Small selections of wines but they were really good wines and reasonable. Ordered A charcuterie plate, fried oysters, burgers and mussels. The plate was so tasty and the meats were perfectly cured, their mousse was just melt in my mouth. Mussels were so plumped and juicy. Creamy curry? Sauce was as good as mussels. Their burgers were seasoned right and right size. Not to small or big. Fried oysters were my fave. Small size and sweet. Zig zag was recommended by a business owner we had visited on tour of Seattle. It did not disappoint us. All the staff were knowledgeable, curious, and efficient. The food was outstanding. In fact, we ate at Zig Zag for dinners during our two evenings in Seattle. The drink menu was very creative while having the standards. If you are a bourbon lover, this is place is for you. I had the lasagna the first night and the burger the second night. My only regret was not having a third night to try the nochi. We had fresh pork rinds and the deep fried deviled eggs as an appetizer. Both we're a tasting experience. It's not often I take the time to recommend a place, but Zig Zag was worth it. I had a great experience here. I've heard a lot of good things about Zig Zig and I'm so happy I've finally made my way there to experience it myself. I ate the fries and deviled eggs off their late night menu. I loved the sultry smokey ambiance and the bartender was great. I just loved watching the art that goes into crafting their perfect cocktails. I had a simple Moscow mule, perhaps next time I'll try one of their house cocktails. The deviled eggs were so yummy! This place fills up fast! Especially during happy hour. We arrived at around 630 and only got in 45 mins or so later. That was fine, we kinda expected the wait anyway. Say hi to the store owner next door, he's super friendly. We had a couple of drinks, which were definitely reasonable at $13 each and had a spread of food for the table. From pita and dips to Greek fries and Greek cheese, the food had nice portions to share around the table. Unfortunately, the choices for food were lacking. It did not immediately scream "this is a food lovers place" but I guess they are more known for their drinks? This place never fails! When all the restaurants in the downtown area close down around 10 and you want a fab bit & a great craft cocktail - zigzag is there to save the night! I have been a patron for over 10 years and honestly not one bad experience. The food is always interesting and a culinary adventure; presentation is never haphazard and the ambiance is very cozy and romantic. This visit we had steak frites, olives and the cheese plate. The orange marmalade was amazing ---. I had an old-fashioned (which was super smooth); we also had a craft cocktail that I cannot recall the name of. Their list of specialty liquors and drinks will always serve up an interesting option to try. Summer nights (week nights) are made very special with an impromptu visit to have great food & drinks with the perk of sitting outside and smelling the wonderful salty oceanic air! The old streetlights in the alleyway create a very cozy atmosphere -- just overall a great spot! It's not a big place, so keep that in mind for busy weekend visits. read more

We went to Zig Zag a couple months ago and it was amazing. Went back tonight and it was a completely different experience... And NOT in a good way. The cookies and ice cream dessert consisted of a rock hard "cookie" (literally harder than petrified wood) and Dryers ice cream, whereas last time it was a soft melty cookie with ice cream made from fresh strawberries. They also took away the pita and hummus dip dish, which was half the reason for for coming to Zig Zag in the first place. Probably won't be back unless they replace the current chef. I came here with my friends and the ambiance was chill. You find this location tucked in the middle of a stairway but it's super pretty at night. They were like a bistro and we got a table just for drinks. The server was super accommodating and recommended us a great light beer. She added a lemon twist on it for us to give it a nice kick and it was yummy. My friend ordered a citrus cocktail which had a nice aftertaste. Great place and we completely lucked out by getting seats. They have stand up stations because this place gets so incredibly busy. This gem is small but really cozy. My friends all ordered fancy cocktails that weren't lacking of booze or originality. I stuck to cider, having so many different new options to taste! We also ordered appetizers and I'm glad we did. We ordered herbed olives, hummus and cucumber (cucumber was the only GF option), and their take on Greek fries (made vegan by omitting the feta and having the Greek dip on the side). The olives were so fresh and packed full of flavour. The humus was ok and they served it with a full cucumber. It was the FRIES that were simply amazing. The herbs they used to coat the fried goodness was perfect. My friends loved the dip that came with them. It was so good that we ordered another round! Service was perfect! Just a quick walk down some stairs from Pike Place Market, Zig Zag is impressive to say the least. It's fancy without being pretentious, small without being cramped, stocked with hard to find alcohols, has a kitchen serving bar food worth ordering, and has an outdoor patio to boot! The staff here is professional, attentive, friendly, and very social. Post up at the bar and enjoy great conversation with a likely out-of-towner sitting near you or one of the bartenders. I don't even waste my time with the cocktail menu. Rather, tell any of the talented bartenders what you're in the mood for and give them the reigns. I've never been let down and typically find myself experiencing a tasty new liqueur or spirit to add to my drinxicon. If you find yourself hungry don't be afraid of the bar food stigma that it will be heavy, greasy, and overall disappointing. This place knows what they're doing! It took us a while to figure out where this place was - it seemed popular on yelp, so where was the foot traffic and inevitable noise coming from this trendy bar on Saturday night? We came for happy hour one day after apartment hunting and it was a great choice. We sat outside to enjoy some of the last days of good weather in Seattle. The staff was friendly and showed us to seats right away. We didn't have a lot of time left for happy hour, but the waitress was on top of it and got our orders in. We ended up with a super carb-loaded spread, but here goes. Food: Chicken kabobs: it was great and the sauce was good Dip sampler: The hummus and tzatsiki were great, the olive dip was a bit salty, but I guess it should be as it's olives. Zig Zag nails a lofy trifecta: cocktails, crowd, character. The bartending is close to bar none and offers one of the most storied cocktail menus in Seattle - an impossibly extensive selection of house cocktails, ranging from classic to rare. Cocktails are expertly made, beautifully presented. The crowd is diverse, interesting and has a great vibe. Prior reviews attest to the ambiance, which might be the hardest to replicate. I was cruising along in my T-65 X-wing when Alec Guinness' voice entered my mind -- which was weird -- saying "You will go to Zig Zag Cafe. There you will learn from master Murray." So I redirected my R-2 unit to take us there. The seats at the bar were all occupied when I ventured in but it was a great evening so I sat on the sweet little patio and perused the menu. Yes, I was there to visit the oracle of alcohol but first I needed to fortify myself with some hard calories. The waitress was great and recommended a mojito for my beverage, saying, "It is just the most amazing mojito, EVER." A bold statement, so I had to verify this. That in turn led me to choose alligator gumbo for my dinner, just to maintain that Creole groove. The gumbo was good, no doubt about it, but not nearly flavorful enough to compete with the mojito. This was, without question, the best I'd ever had, the glass stuffed with lime slices and topped with fresh mint dusted with powdered sugar. It was just sweet enough without assaulting the fresh taste. So after my dinner was complete I grabbed a seat at the small, busy bar. This, I realized, is where the faithful come to worship at the shrine of Cocktail. An owner of another bar was quizzing Murray about his source for a rare bitters (the bar features a whole shelf of bitters, another of hot sauce and still another of vermouths). When he left, the owner of another popular bistro took his place and she and Murray traded rapid-fire pearls about new openings, closings and moves in the Seattle food and beverage scene. And then it was my turn. "What'll ya have?," the man asked me. "I'm not sure yet," I said. "You new at this?" he said. "I'll be back." When he came back around I still wasn't sure. "I'm over my head," I said. "You have any suggestions?" Murray ran me through a quick interview. After determining I wanted something vodka-y, maybe citrusy, but not sweet, he screwed up his face and studied me like an unworthy Padawan. Then he snapped his fingers and flew into action. In the space of just a few seconds he poured -- without visible measuring -- 5 or 6 different ingredients into a shaker, shook it, sampled it with a swizzle stick, poured a taster and slid it in front of me. By the time I lifted it to my lips he was on to concocting two or three other beverages. But it was brilliant and delicious - a Pegu, he called it, an old school recipe from the early 20th century. I came here on a Thursday night with four friends. They open up at 5 pm and happy hour is from 5 pm to 7 pm. I came exactly at 5 pm and there were people already waiting for the door to open. Such a popular spot! The place is kind of hidden. It is across the street from Pike Place Market. You would have to go down the stairs from Kasala furniture store and it is to the right near the viaduct. For drinks, I ordered the Ginger's snap. It was a simple vodka, lemon, honey and ginger beer drink. For food, we ordered the Greek fries, the house spread platter, chicken kabobs, and the burger (not on the HH menu). We enjoyed all the dishes. For the house spread platter, everyone in my party agreed that the minty feta and the bleu cheese dip was the best one out of the 3. The other ones were the hummus and the tzatiziki dip. Even though the burger was not on the HH menu, it was so good. The patty was juicy and the burger was packed with flavor due to the red onion jam and the mustard aioli sauce. I highly recommend if you have to choose a dish for dinner. I loved hearing about the Zig Zag in the past from the bartender who's name I am blanking on. Our waitress seated us inside, but we were lucky enough to snag a table that opened on the back patio, so despite having already ordered drinks, we were able to move to the fresh air. This is the perfect place to relax and unwind-- dark, unassuming, dare I say romantic? Every small plate we ordered was delicious. Tucked between that and the staircase you're coming down is The Zig Zag Cafe. It feels just as hidden, quirky, and discreet on the inside as it looks on the outside, if not more so. It's a great place for a romantic dinner and/or drinks, as well as a quirky place to hang out with your friends. Such a great place to come with a group of friends! Their servers have a great understanding in splitting the check as many ways as you desire, not only without the judgment, but with a smile on their face! The food: tasty! You know that look when you are sharing a meal with a friend and you both take a bite, and then you just look each other in the eye and you just mumble the words of approval? It must happen here a lot. Beet salad was so delicious: with good amount of beets, roasted potatoes and big chunks of boar bacon. The menu of this place is a little on the wild side: camel burger, alligator gumbo, boar bacon... Although I heard great things about these, our appetites were a little less adventurous that evening and we went with the muffaletta sandwich. It was very good, with generous portion of salty meats and it came with a delicious curry butternut squash soup. I loved that the soup was served hot. So many places just throw it on the side and present it to you lukewarm. I was drinking barbera wine that evening and it was just fine, I wish their pours were a little less skimpy too. On the other side my friend's mule was fantastic. And I am not even a fan of these. I will try some of their cocktails next time! Came here on Valentine's Day and expected a long wait but we just sat down right when we walked in! I was kinda worried since it was completely empty on a popular holiday haha. This place is definitely hidden. We got lost for awhile and finally found it down the stairs of a plaza. We got the deviled eggs as appetizer and it turned out pretty good. Those folks always turn out to be the most insecure neurotics on the planet. That's exactly what's going on here. The Lemon Drop was mediocre at best. The LIT was nothing to shout about. This is pretty upscale, bougie place and if you're feeling fancy or if you're loaded, this is a good place to come for drinks. I will say that their drinks are spot on, but they're a bit expensive so you get what you pay for. The servers who attend to you also know what they're talking about, and they seem to have pretty good communication with the bartenders. Their food is also pretty expensive as well, the cheapest food item was $18 I think, or at least everything is above $12 easy. It's a pretty cool place and it's dimly lit so I can see how it can be a date night thing. This place does get crowded so be sure to make reservations, or you'll be waiting for a long time. Thank goodness I had my Blackberry complete with Google Maps on hand. Zig Zag Cafe is a hidden gem in a corner of the Pike Hillclimb stairs. Thank goodness they had seats for seven on a Saturday night. The atmosphere is very dark and romantic, not so good for a group setting, but we made do. We sat down, asked for food menus (only drink menus are available on hand), and perused through the list. Andrew B. was right, the menu is short and sweet. I ended up ordering the four-cheese pie, which was excellent. Nothing on the cocktails menu caught my eye, but I was in a celebratory mood, so I ordered a Kir Royal for myself, not knowing the cost. Overall, I enjoyed both my pizza and my champagne, and it didn't put a big dent in my wallet. A perfect place to start or end an evening out. read more

The HH menu- I've had are the olives, bruschetta & calamari (highly recommend) As for the regular menu, I've had the veggie flatbread & it was gooooood But I love the outdoor seating compared to the inside..It's worth the iron marks on your a** from the wrought iron chairs to have a little seclusion and quiet with your friends because it can get pretty loud inside. This was on my "must visit" list when I was in Seattle for a few days because I'm super into great cocktails, and I'd seen this place show up in enough lists of "best cocktails in Seattle" that I clearly had to check it out. I didn't entirely know what to expect going in - I was sort of hoping to find more wacky creative experimental type drinks, and that is not what I found at all. Their menu definitely skews towards the traditionally-presented, but that doesn't mean they aren't still fantastic. I was only planning on trying at most two cocktails here, but despite both of the cocktails I tried looking exactly the same (light brown liquid served up in a coupe glass), they were both so perfectly balanced and delicious, I had to try a third (which also looked basically the same as the first two, and was also just as deliciously balanced and not particularly similar to either of the first two in flavor). The place was fairly quiet, so I had a nice chat with the very knowledgeable bartender about cocktails, the bar's focus, and local craft spirits (they do also have a great curated selection of local craft spirits, though sadly other than a couple of liqueurs, none of them are in drinks that are on happy hour, you have to call them specifically if you want them in cocktails.) If I were a Seattle local, this would definitely be the sort of place I'd frequent frequently - $9 for drinks of this quality (on HH) is a deal. I imagine the place gets crazy busy later, though. I wasn't here for dinner, but I had to try the happy hour fries while I was here, partially so I could review it properly, and partially to sop up the large quantity of alcohol I was imbibing (their drinks, in addition to being delicious, are also quite stiff). I'm happy to report, the fries were also pretty good (and you get a surprisingly large amount of them for happy hour). My only complaint is that the garlic dip was clearly the entire point of ordering the fries (it was super delicious), but they give you a stupidly tiny amount of it for the amount of fries you get, and it took way too long to get more of it (and even then, I still had to conserve it a bit to not run out of it a second time while still having fries left.) Why not just give us enough garlic dip up front? That's a pretty tiny complaint about an otherwise fantastic drinking establishment, though. read more

We're visiting from LA and have been carted around town by family members to breweries, diners, pike place market, pho and a handful of other places to eat. We didn't come to Sesttle with anything particular in mind so I guess where we were taken was ok. We split off from everything and everybody last night and went to the waterfront to ride the Ferris wheel (worth it!) and then grab a bite to eat. This place was the closest and the food looked great. What a wonderful surprise!!! It was warm, cozy and intimate - just what we like. Great drinks, awesome food, and a wonderful atmosphere that supported intimate conversation. The servers were nice (though very busy) and the manager (?) was nice enough to move us when someone at a near table began to impede on our personal space. It's places like these that I feel really make a city great - gems that are a little off the beaten path that have so much more to offer than everything else that's enshrouded in a bunch of hype and always leaves you wanting a little more. This is a cool place!....A little Noir....and subterranean. On business, and a snowy night, I had the munchies and I thought I would try it out. I showed up around 12:30 on a Thursday night this past December and found the place to be hopping with cool jazz music and a decent waitstaff at the bar. I ordered the $16 burger and here I wait....With a drink in hand....probably one too many, but I was walking....of all things, a snowy night in Seattle....at least it wasn't rain. Anyway, the burger good and was what the gut needed. It was a cool experience, as it is tucked away where you have to walk down or up some stairs to get to it. Their happy hour has delicious small plates available, too, and I got some fried oysters and a mixed greens salad, both of which were just right. Actually quite a bit of food, too! Lets just say, I relished and savored every bite until my plate was empty! It was super yummy, savory, and just a sensation in my mouth! There's a reason it always so busy in here for happy hour! 5-7pm. Prices on drinks and food are amazing. Food is great quality with awesome variety. We enjoyed oysters, kebabs, fries, humus with bleu cheese and tzatziki sauce sampler. Vibe is a traditional martini bar, dark and sultry. Love it. Been many times and will be back many more. Just can't give 5 stars cause our waitress was very impersonal although we tried to break the ice many times. She kept an off-put demeanor. She even corrected my friend when it wasn't necessary. You just stumbled into the world's most perfect cocktail lounge. And no, I am not exaggerating. Head bartender Murray Stenson is everything you want in the man behind the bar: funny, friendly, helpful, interesting, and talented. The other two bartenders, Kacy and Ben, are his perfect sidekicks (they're also the co-owners of the bar, doncha know...) As Cameron says: They put more love into a single cocktail here than most chefs put into a whole meal... and he's right! This is no razberry-pucker-tini joint: they really know how to make great cocktails, from perfect classics to resurrected drinks of yore to modern inventions that just taste...right. If you're feeling peckish, they do have a dinner menu, and they serve until the small hours. The sausage plate is nice, and the cheeses; the pizzas are hit and miss. None of it is great, some of it is only so-so. But really, you're not here for the food... I miss this place more than any other in Seattle. Seriously, go. Tell Murray that I sent ya. read more

Great atmosphere and lighting. You go here to get away from the very young or very old drinkers. Most people are hip urban people in their 30's. The menu cocktails are for super advanced drinkers and I don't mean people who just drink a lot so I haven't found anything I really like. Really classy joint where you can go and pretend to be grown up. Warning: This place is hard to find. Look for the Kasala furniture store on Western behind the Pike Place Market and go down the stairs. Its on the right. Good Luck read more
