I recently bought a PSP from one Zia Records location that was labeled as "tested" and "working." By the time I got home and tested it properly, the original store had already closed, so I went to another open Zia location nearby for help. After testing the PSP, I found that the analog stick and HOME button do not work at all. These are major controls, so the system clearly was not fully tested before being sold. When I explained the issue at the other location, I was only offered store credit or told I could keep it. I ask if it would be possible to do a partial refund or price adjustment since I was willing to repair it myself, but they refused. I also asked if I returned it, they would at least mark the PSP's price down they said no i also asked if they would label it as having joystick issues before reselling it, and I was told no. What frustrated me most was the attitude during the interaction. The employee was dismissive and laughed while talking to me instead of trying to help resolve the issue. I understand retro electronics can have problems sometimes, but if a console is sold as "tested" and "working," basic controls like the analog stick and HOME button should function properly. Don't shop here. Absolute highway robbery. You can get your full amount returned to your debit card online, for the same item. Brand new unopened and everything, but if you return it in store the same way, they can't return it back to your debit card and can only do store credit? Absolutely bad business practices. I have been visiting Zia Records since my college days. I was such a music junkie back then. There were many nights after an evening of working in the kitchens that I would swing by Zia Records and dig for rare CD's and other forms of music. Back then, the Zia that I would go to was located on Mill Ave and University in Tempe. They now operate out of this location on Southern. These days I find myself trading back old stuff from my collection for newer gems. It has been fun looking for new and used vinyl. Zia Records opened in 1980 in Phoenix and has been the leading retailer of independent music in the Valley ever since. They have locations all over the Valley and in Tucson and Nevada. They sell new and pre-owned music, movies, books, video games and more. They also have pop culture collectables, accessories, toys, comics, incense sticks, and used stereos. On occasions Zia will host in-store performances by local and national acts. Record Store Day is one of my favorite days. Zia Records joins in with several other independent record stores across the world to sell exclusive vinyl and other rarities. It is a lot of fun to see collectors and die-hard music fans come out to pick up a handful of limited vinyl. I hate to say it, but Zia is losing its luster for me. I've been visiting here since the 90s and the past few times I've visited any location I can't seem to find anything I'm looking for. There's more new music/vinyls than the old school ones I'm used to loving. Service can be a definite hit or miss. This week besides a quick hi from someone at the entrance it was non existent even though multiple walked by. Store is clean for the most part. Left a 4 star, but feeling more a 3.5. I get they can't control who brings in vintage records or certain types of music but I'd love if I could just find one Chris Cornell album, Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, but from the actual 90s etc. read more

These guys have been around for about 45 years, and I can see why they've been able to create such a following and are still going. About 15 minutes after Charlie Kirk was shot, I was walking by a group of employees behind the counter discussing it. They blamed him for being shot, saying he was "talking some right wing bullshit", and one of the employees walked away saying she "loved hearing news like this". This repulsive behavior reflects poorly on the company as a whole. I tried addressing it via the "contact us" section of their website, and received no response. Praising the assassination of an innocent man should be never be acceptable, and customers should be aware of the type of people they're supporting by shopping here. read more

I used to love this store, but it seems to have gone downhill lately and I think my experience this week was the final straw for me. I brought in a box of stuff to trade, and the process took so long that I was able to shop, go pick up my wife from work, run an errand, drive her home across town, and then drive back to the store before they finished. All for a paltry $13 in store credit. I couldn't find anything worthwhile to spend that on in the main part of the store (the book section is worse than a below-average Goodwill shelf) so I put in some cash and bought a guitar pedal from their glass case of music equipment. I got home, tested it, and it was broken. It wouldn't turn on or off. So I drove back there only to learn: they will only do returns for store credit. Even though the item was broken, and I saved my receipt. The first sentence of the return policy they pointed me to starts "like most stores, we only exchange for store credit", but I have scoured my brain and cannot think of a single other establishment with this policy. I would have been better off dumping that box of books and movies into the garbage can instead of trading it in. Now I'm actually * out * a bunch of money, and much worse off than before I ever came in. read more

BEST POP CULTURE/THRIFT STORE! Zia is my go-to store when hanging out with other music, video game, movie, book, or other pop culture media fans! They have a large selection of both new and used media ranging from CDs, vinyl records, video games, DVDs, books, and more. I always find something new when I'm here. My personal favorite section is the CDs! They always have end caps full of CDs on sale for low prices, sometimes $1! You can also sell your stuff here! One time I sold a box full of miscellaneous manga and I got ~$70 in store credit to buy some new CDs! I like this location a lot because of the surrounding area and the Dutch Bros in the plaza, perfect for a day out. The store has what seems to be a decent selection of vinyls, cds, movies, and more. However the trade in process is very time consuming with very nominal payment amounts vs Bookmans. Only a very small amount of my selection had offers of 2 or 3 dollars, and as soon as you leave the store you have to wait for all your items to be priced again another day. The first time it took about 1.5 hours, so I decided to donate my items instead. It just didn't seem like they valued my time. read more

I want to thank Zia records for all the hard work and the efforts they are putting in for for Covid 19. These hard working essential workers are really helping me and the community out. For Covid there is social distancing. I showed pics for you guys so you can see for yourself it is safe in here. You can do curbsides. You can have peace with music playing. Please be prepared to wear a mask it's mandated by Tempe. Precovid 19 there were puzzle pieces that are sent out to the places I took a pic of and are matched as a donation to the charities. Ive been a few times since Covid hit us hard in March in AZ. But Zia has been amazing. they have sanitizer in place and social distancing. Yes people are going to stores and frantic for food but let's not forget about the kids at home, gamers, comic nerds, toys, collectors, us resellers, and more we are all hurting right now. Not just one of us as an individual but our community and the world. Now back to Zia Their toy section is huge. Matthew helped with behind the counter. He helped with my trade too and also is just an overall cool guy with great music stories. When I called, Brooklyn who gave me info on what is being traded and how they are doing it right now. When you come in they have a bucket for you as she told me, and are not doing clothing or wearable items but business as usual. Then there was Cat. She was super awesome and helpful. She looked up items that I needed. (Reef the list Cauze, Snowgoons, C Lance) and many more. She got me a Onyx CD that's called "Bacdafucup" from the 90s who are legendary from NY. There's Jay the asst store manager that works his butt off too and been with Zia since 2016 and he's been kind looking up items too while working! Thanks. He's into Jazz, Death Metal, Classic country and more. He said he lives Bb King and Rush and we talked video games too. He said he plays PS4 Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order Then there's Brianna the Store Manager. She's got green hair and I have done trades with her in the past so thank you. All the CDs, Blu Rays, jerseys and more I appreciated the help during normal times from Brianna. I appreciate that she's never judged me by the music I like. I showed her my favorite trio Jon Murdock, Lex Starwind, and Ricky Fitz of Foundation who are in my favorite Group called Lost Children of Babylon by Rasul Allah. He's made an awesome group and been kind to me too. I get judged so much for like rapping music but not here. I've told Brianna over the time I've seen her about underground hip hop vs mainstream. I've talked about the producers like Bozac Morris, Mr Green, G.U.N. productions, South Paw (Immortal techniques producer) Evidence, and evening Eminem and Kanye. While I'm 95% hip hop I love the Beatles, Elton John, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift and even BTS now. They're super awesome especially the BTS fans that shut down hate on twitter lol I wanna thank Core too who helped me out behind the counter today as well. We talked video games. He plays all systems. We talked family and his Mom which was nice since I lost my own and it was nice just to talk to a stranger and hear how much he cared and to share about my job. Always able to find a good deal! My husband and I came here on the hunt for some Marvel movies in order to prepare for Friday, but instead we left with the whole X-Men series which is still alright by me haha. I will say the store is normally not put together well, the clothing area is kind of like a goodwill kind of area. It seems like an afterthought, just to make an extra buck. Most of the time the staff are friendly and helpful, but they never really have any good suggestions for music and such. We've never had an issue with any of the locations, will continue to support the business! This is a cool store and all but the employees were so grouchy. Maybe I caught them on a bad day. They had that "I wish I wasn't scheduled to work today" vibe. Anyway, aside from the employees that could use an uplifting motivational speech, they have a lot of neat things here: DVDs, books, games, music, collectibles. They also have lots of random things like the world's smallest Duncan yo-yo, a meditating Bigfoot, and rubber chickens to name a few. As a fan of other Zia locations, this one doesn't disappoint either. Large location and good selection as always. I was browsing the criterion collection they have here and found a movie I've been looking for for a very long time. Score! Friendly staff too, a nice girl didn't mind pointing me in the right direction to find the section and the guy checking us out was super friendly as well. Chill spot where you can find great stuff if you have the time to browse, but also can pick up a new release and find them easily too. I like this Zia Records, one of the biggest store and I usually find some unique gifts for gift giving from here. This is also a place where I buy most of my movies, cds and anything anime for my kids. It is hard to come out of this place without buying anything, because they have such great prices on things that I find. I recommend them to everyone that has the same likings as me. read more

I have been going to zia for over 20 years. I have been going to the Tempe store for about 15 years. The last few times I have gone there have been horrible customer service. I was in there the other day waiting over 20 minutes for them to count like six CDs to exchange. He said there were many before me but there was no one else in the store but one other person. He knew that I was in a rush and said he would hurry but about a half an hour went by and she gave me a smug comment and told me it was first come first serve. I looked around and did not see anyone else. I had things to do and didn't have another half hour to wait for this teenager that didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. This place has super cool inventory, but some of the staff are straight up rude and dumb which ruined the experience. My friend asked if he could take a look at something behind glass to which one of the female employees responded loudly, "ARE YOU GOING TO BUY IT?" Idiot was treating a grown ass customer like a child. Then, idiot #2 who opened the glass looked at the item and made a remark like " wow , this much just for this" and comments to that regard. I used to love this store. Back in the day my music collection was enormous. Records, records and more records. And the arrogant store clerks who seemed to act superior with their personal knowledge of quality music never bothered me much. In high school my older sister briefly dated one of these dudes. Ziggy Stardust he was not. But when CDs came in vogue I was all over that. I got rid of the records. Now, my music collections are in clouds. That would be Amazon Prime and Pandora. And my collection is larger than ever at a fraction of the cost. I just can't touch and feel it. No more visits to Zia. Sorry, time waits for no one. read more

Wow, came in to check the new location out and it didn't disappoint! The hubby is always looking for hard to find records and books and he almost always finds em here! This location was very organized, staff seemed on top of putting everything back to where it belonged and they were very helpful and knowledgable as well! we liked how the sections were nice separated and not bunched together like it was at the other location in Tempe. Love the knick knacks they sold at the ends of the book shelves and love how they have a kid section for kid books. Will definitely be coming back! read more
