Well, with an introduction like that we had no choice but to stop over after we grabbed some Lego pieces. Holy Funko Pop collection, Batman !! I had never before seen anything like the Funko Pop collection that Asylum has on the North wall inside their store. If you're looking for a specific Funko, they are likely to have it in stock. Wow. Besides the newer collectibles like those this is a traditional old school record store. I felt like I had been transported back to the early 80's when I was buying up albums by groups like Ratt, Huey Lewis and the News, Prince, Men at Work, etc. Scott fits the bill perfectly, too. He'll entertain you with stories as you shop or while you're checking out with your latest purchases. Fantastic first visit. Looking forward to future visits. Going to look around the house for any collectibles, albums, movies, etc. for possible trade, too.

Every time I stop by Bookmans Entertainment Exchange in Mesa, I manage to find at least one hidden…read moregem in the comic book section. In fact, I can usually find something to check off my ever-growing wish list--which is why I keep coming back. The catch? You're going to have to put in some serious time digging through the racks. The bagged-and-boarded comics are loosely organized by DC, Marvel, and Indie, with the individual titles generally alphabetized. They also have a section of bundles, which is always worth a look if you're hunting for complete runs. Unfortunately, nothing in the bundles made it onto my wish list this time. After spending a considerable amount of time working my way through the DC and Marvel sections, I wandered over to the magazine racks and discovered even more comics--some bagged and boarded, along with plenty of raw comics that were definitely in the low-grade, $1-bin neighborhood. The downside? This section appeared to have absolutely no organizational system. Consider it the comic-book equivalent of an archaeological dig. Bring patience. And possibly snacks. I also checked out the video game section to see if there were any must-haves hiding behind the glass. I found a few games in the locked cabinet, but some were priced about the same as buying a brand-new copy. I'm not really sure how that makes sense for a resale store. If I'm buying used, I'm expecting at least a little bit of a "used game" discount. Overall, Bookmans is worth checking out if you're hunting for comics, especially if you enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Don't expect everything to be perfectly organized or easy to find. Be prepared to spend some quality time flipping through racks, digging through the less-organized sections, and hoping the comic-book gods smile upon you. I didn't walk out with a massive haul, but I did find something worth adding to the collection--which makes the hunt worthwhile. Four stars for the potential, the selection, and those occasional hidden gems. ‍

I just left the Bookman's Store on Country Club and Southern, and I was abused and disrespected by…read moreone of their staff members. I was shopping, and waiting for my trade offer for some items I brought in. I asked to look at a Collector Comic Book that was locked in a case. I asked the staff member if I could take the book out and look a it because I wanted to make sure nothing was cut out of the comic. He immediately became defensive, and his attitude became hostile. I said "if there is anything cut out it's not worth $25 and I want to check. If I damage it while looking at it, I'll pay for it." His response wasn't helpful or understanding, it was pushy and abusive. "You should just get these while you see them. No one has these, and I've never seen one in our store since I've been here". I said "I have been collecting comics all of my life, and if there is anything cut out, it's not worth $10 to me". Again, instead of being friendly and asking anything helpful or asking questions, he was pushy and forceful, and became even more irritated when I pointed out the water damage on the back of the comic and told him I didn't want it. He was very unfriendly from the start. A toxic person, to be as kind as I can be. I received notice that my trade offer was ready, but I cancelled my trade offer, and walked out of the store with the items I had brought to trade. I WILL NEVER RETURN AS LONG AS THAT PERSON WORKS THERE. When I advised the staff of what happened, they seemed disinterested in doing anything. I asked them "how can you allow a person who treats customer this was to work here, and why would you want to work here if the business allows this?" They all looked at me with blank stares on their faces. A manager did talk to me, but it was the same attitude as the rude employee. He didn't introduce himself my name. He didn't try to find out the name of the employee. His attitude, like the rude staff member, was an attitude of not wanting to be there, an attitude of feeling irritated that they have to actually talk to a customer and assist them, an attitude of superiority and entitlement, an attitude that their customers do not matter to them and that they don't respect people in general. I advised their manager on duty that I work as a customer service consultant, and the employees treatment was unacceptable. He did offer complimentary credit, but did not indicate how much. I declined and told them honestly "I don't care if you pay me a Billion dollars in cash, I don't want it if that person works here. What he did was unacceptable and he should be fired". I am sure they won't do anything, and I want everyone to know that Bookman's is a TOXIC company who does not appreciate their customers, and they will screw you over and abuse you if you go there.

And I got to pop in Thanksgiving weekend (shop small Saturday people!). I'll be honest. As far as record stores go, I'm not sure this is truly "Woohoo as good as it gets!". But, for me -- a girl who was willing to take a bus from Ahwatukee to Mill Ave (in sweltering AZ summer heat no less) to get to Eastside's original location to browse CDs, upcoming show flyers, buy posters, surreptitiously sneak glances at cute boys (with an eye on their taste in bands) and buy tickets to punk shows --I am over the moon that Eastside is back and offering a place to peruse vinyl in Tempe. Be prepared: this isn't your curated, neatly displayed, Urban Outfitters bullshit record shopping. This is records shopping from a guy who is obsessed with records. They. Are. Everywhere. Stacks and stacks spilled out of crates and almost blocked the entrance. But there is a system, sort of. There are bins with genre markers. Big enough artists get their own marker to make them easier to find. There are used, there are new. There are third-party sellers tables (though not clearly marked as such - but the price tags are a different color). Come prepared to spend time *digging*. That is the best part of record shopping anyway: the hunt. I found the prices to be fair. I spent $8 on some, $18 on others. There are stacks and stacks of $1 records (though I didn't check the quality of them) and of course more collectible/special edition items for $35+ If you have a record player go check it out. Give yourself plenty of time and don't drag someone who isn't willing to help you look or at least has a passing interest in vinyl. They'll be bored and you'll fee bad ;)

I recently bought a PSP from one Zia Records location that was labeled as "tested" and "working."…read moreBy the time I got home and tested it properly, the original store had already closed, so I went to another open Zia location nearby for help. After testing the PSP, I found that the analog stick and HOME button do not work at all. These are major controls, so the system clearly was not fully tested before being sold. When I explained the issue at the other location, I was only offered store credit or told I could keep it. I ask if it would be possible to do a partial refund or price adjustment since I was willing to repair it myself, but they refused. I also asked if I returned it, they would at least mark the PSP's price down they said no i also asked if they would label it as having joystick issues before reselling it, and I was told no. What frustrated me most was the attitude during the interaction. The employee was dismissive and laughed while talking to me instead of trying to help resolve the issue. I understand retro electronics can have problems sometimes, but if a console is sold as "tested" and "working," basic controls like the analog stick and HOME button should function properly. I like the themed rooms as well. There's a lot of things to look at around every corner. The museum is a cool touch as well. And if you spend $15 you get free admission to the museum. Yesterday, it was cool to see ghost face sitting on a bench. I definitely took some pictures with my favorite scary movie villain. This wasn't my first time but I will definitely be back.
