Hadn't been in here since my 20's. I got the Prince Black Album on Wax from the owner back then as it was not a full release and only certain people had it for sale. They don't have the database but it is still that old school relaxing record store and they have turntables to ask them to play albums. I'll be back. Great selection of any genre you can think of, and well-organized, too. Easygoing atmosphere and if you like the real old stuff (78 rpm records, 45 rpm records) they have it. Huge selection of jazz and also some great world music, classical, easy listening, 50s/60s and everything else. Fun place to explore. read more

Checked this place out on a late Sunday afternoon. Place is fairly small housed within a small strip mall facing Central Avenue. We had to park around the back of the building in a church parking lot. Even though most of the other businesses within the center were closed the gaming place on the corner monopolized most of the parking spaces. Even though it's fairly small inside vinyl selection is pretty good, organized alphabetically by genre. My son purchased a vintage Black Sabbath album he had been searching for at a great price. Man that was working the counter was nice and helped my son find what he was looking for. So why three stars? The place reeked of weed. Absolutely horrible. I was afraid my clothes were going to smell like it when we left. I know it's legal, BUT it's not legal to smoke inside of a business and clearly someone had been. I'm pretty sure if I would have lit a cigarette while shopping I'd have been kicked out. Be respectful. For that reason alone we probably won't be back UPDATE: So the owner reached out and explained the reefer smell and it's not from their suite, it's from a neighboring business. Reaching out proves that as a small business owner he cares about your experience. My son did find a bargain and the customer service was outstanding. read more

This is a very organized record store and looking for 7 inch singles was very easy (organized by codes via a spreadsheet) and the prices are very reasonable. Highly recommend, especially if you're looking for 45s. read more

Tracks in Wax truly is a beloved institution in Arizona. It is the first place I learned to enjoy the beauty and magnificence of records and the "vinyl listening experience." That was 30 years ago, during the hey-day of compact discs. The place has only gotten better! First, let me say, Tim, the owner, is a class act. He is on our side as his customers and I've found him to be a cool and friendly shop owner. He is very loyal as a business owner. He does it all himself and with his whole heart. He clearly loves his shop, it's history, his records, and his clients. Buying records from a "brick and mortar" shop should be an experience and Tracks provides that. I have so much fun shopping there and the room has a historic and nostalgic presence he has lovingly preserved. I was a regular customer back in the 80's/90's, and the place looks and feels like home to this very day. There is a spirit and an atmosphere that is amazing and, in ways, hallowed for those of us that have been in Arizona for many years. I have a few spots on my regular record rotation and I love all of them. Tracks in Wax, however, is special to me. I definitely spend the lion's share of my record budget here and there is a very good reason why. Tim. I've really enjoyed building a business relationship with him as his customer. In addition to keeping the spirit of Tracks alive, he has an uncanny ability to provide me with the LP's that bring me the most joy; the records that take me back to my roots, my youth. I can't put a price on that. If a record store in Arizona has ever had "cathedral-like" qualities, Tracks in Wax does for me. The stores proximity to a venerable local Phoenix church probably doesn't hurt either. His selection is fantastic and very fairly priced. I've never seen an item there that I thought "that's overpriced" or "what a rip-off." I always feel appreciated and like a VIP when interacting with Tim at the store. I'm not special or different, he just really loves records and record collectors. There are lots of places, great places, you can buy records all over the valley. If you want someone on your side when it comes to LP collecting, Tracks in Wax and Tim are one of the best ways to go. Head to Tracks in Wax and bask in the atmosphere, the gems and treasures, and come back regularly. There are still dozens and dozens of records that I can't wait to come back and buy and more show up all the time. I've been hanging out with my flamboyant and fabulous gay uncle a lot lately. His heyday was in the 80's when he rocked frayed daisy dukes with tan legs and a bare furry chest and used mascara on his mustache. Most of our time is spent dancing to 80's songs or rummaging through sale items to find good deals. He brought me along to his favorite record store and it was such a blast from the past. I dig it when people are really into their record collections, it's rare. The place is very laid back and the person working there welcomes questions and won't make you feel like a noob for not knowing about the wax. They have a great 80's selection and my uncle ended up buying some Tina Turner to go along with his wig. read more

RIP, Mr. Wax. I read in New Times that Dennis, the long time owner of Tracks in Wax, recently passed. For now, the plan is the store will go on without him. I'm quietly optimistic - but will miss his sense of humor and encyclopaedic music knowledge. Last time I was in with a girlfriend, we ended up wrestling over Sisters Of Mercy's "First and Last and Always." She won, but promised me visitation rights. (Bitch doesn't even have a record player!!) Sorry, I digress. I walked out with (get your collective geek squeals in unison) the original 2 record set of the radio broadcast of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds." Granted, it's not music - but SQUEE! I can't wait to play it on a dark and stormy night! It was a geektacular moment in my life, to be sure! Selection is solid - but keeping in mind it's used music - what's hard to find is still hard to find. Dennis told me he coulnd't keep Leonard Cohen or Tom Waits in stock no matter how much he brought in. Damn other record collectors that get there wanting the same things I do! How much do I love this place? I have given myself a weekly allowance on what I can spend here. It is a practice in self control. I can't help myself when I come here. The selection is THAT awesome. You know when you go to a record store and you see an album by an artist and it's not the one you want? When this happens, go to Tracks in Wax because the one you want will be there. No kidding. I get giddy on a freakish level. What I really dig is the variety. They have major albums by popular rock bands, singles you've never seen and their alternative/punk selection is pretty awesome. It is super organized in there and they have the friendliest people working there. Sad admission, due to the self imposed spending limit I keep a mental list of all the records I want to go back and pick up. It's a long list. By the way, the spending limit has nothing to do with the prices, which are awesome. It has everything to do with the fact that this place could turn me into a hoarder. read more

I spent many a day hanging out in this store when I was went to high school down the road. Admittedly, most of the time I chose hanging out at Tracks instead of making my mid morning English class. This is a great place to find records. I found a lot of old records I was looking for including Johnny Cash, Paul Simon, and Billy Joel. They have a large selection and most of them are reasonably priced. The BF bought a sealed copy of Folsom Prison this weekend for 35$....pretty cool find. this was my last stop on my Phoenix vinyl ventures. It was actually supposed to be my 2nd stop, but they close too early at 6pm, so I got there too late the first time. I was able to get here at 530 and felt bad since the lady stayed around till 615pm for me.-----I could have spent at least another 45 mins here. I didn't realize that they kept an Indie section up front, so after spending most of my time finding just a few items in the regular section, I found my section, but right at closing time. As I have pretty much most of what I want on UK vinyl, I now mostly collect Japanese vinyl releases----this place had a pretty good stock of nice Japanese pressings of the stuff I like. Pricing was on the higher side, most of my Japanese scores were $20 and up. They had some killer 7' vinyl, like rare Cure singles, but they were way over-priced i ended up spending the most dough here, even though my best finds were at Revolver read more

I was a kid in a candy store in here. A playground for those on a vinyl odyssey, especially if you're looking for a quality well-loved discs that play well. In every direction I turned new finds popped up, and I left with a stack of something like 13 titles and had to check a bag at the airport, which was well worth it. Zappa, Charlie Daniels Band, Rick James, Cal Tjader, and ZZ Top, among others. There were something like six crates devoted to classic jazz and an entire row along the upper aisle for funk, soul, and R&B. And the prices are entirely fair; some of these went for $5 or $7, and the emphasis is clearly on hooking up customers with pleasing sounds rather than strangling every last possible dollar out of them. Next time I return to the Phoenix metro I will for sure be back, and I encourage everyone passing through the north side of town with an hour to kill and a taste for vinyl to give them a visit. read more

Smells like old records which is a huge +++++ Downside, and nearly every record store suffers from this, is that you shouldn't go in looking for any particular record. Lots of new and used records at very fair prices. The owner, Tim Stamper, helped me out and you can't find better customer service. I will be back soon when I have hours to spend happily hunting there. I found a 1966 copy of The Official Adventures of Flash Gordon with amazing retro-comic cover art. That is going on my wall at home and it sounds great. He has a huge selection of 45's (over 40,000), if you are looking for a particular song just ask him, they are all in his database and he can find it for you quickly. Whenever I am fly into Phoenix, I make time to stop by this record shop on central ave in the downtown area. If you collect vinyl records, in particular, classic rock, soundtracks from TV and films, blues, jazz, etc..then this place is amust see..They have two locations, however the one located on central ave contains the majority of vinyl, some cds, and even cassets. The owner is avery friendly and knowledgable older cat...you will usualy find a few original rockers hanging out by the counter, discussing rock music, or just music in general. It;s a clean and well mainted (organised) record shop, one of a dyign breed. I've scored afew rarities in here over the past few years. Enjoy if you go. read more

It was a sad day to me when I learned of Dennis passing. I knew him and his brother years before they started their store in Phoenix. Tracks In Wax goes back a few decades and built up a loyal clientele over the years. Was in there about a year or so ago and the place had gotten in a sizable collection. Been going into Tracks in Wax for a couple of decades now. It's more of the Classic Rock style shop and the place to go in the Valley for the best chance of finding music of the that genre. Last time in I found 2 original Funkadelic LPs and 2 original Al Green releases, all in excellent condition, in their very decent soul/R&B section. I really like the guys who ran the store for years but the people taking care of it these days are doing a great job. The stores much cleaner than it's ever been and the selection of goodies remains very high. read more

After the elderly woman at the counter fingered through 3 or 4 albums she said they were too dusty to look through and she wasn't going to do it.
