So a nice way to support buying secondhand items from Phoenix folks, being more sustainable and supporting a smaller business, and overall just a good spot to come explore! How haven't a written a review of this place! I love an establishment that presents itself as a home for the community. I walk in to Bookman's and often find displays that are Arizona focused in a way that makes you feel and know this place is home town friendly. No big box impersonal feels here! I frequent this store and stop in just because I'm passing by. As an avid reader, I read about 50 books a year, Bookman's is a great place to buy paper books at a cheaper price. My favorite part about local shops like Bookman's is how they don't shy away from displaying banned books all year long! I have to read at least one banned books a month! There's gotta be something in the banned books they don't want us to know and I'm determined to read as many as possible. Interestingly enough, this store is full of "entertainment treasures" too. Music, musical instruments and even gaming equipment can be purchased here. The only thing missing is a social lounge with a coffee bar. I write this review as an elementary teacher who loves books and reading in her free time. I first discovered Bookmans a few months ago when I had the time to read more. When I first walked in, I was amazed at how big the space was with books, comics, musical instruments, gadgets, etc. And naturally, I was curious if they had teacher discounts -- and what do you know, when I went up to the counter, they said they offer 20% discounts for teachers, and even have a Read 10 program for students/kids (if a child reads 10 books and writes a book report for each, I was told it could be a paragraph long or so, they can get 1 free book in store!) I love how this bookstore supports educators and children! But with that being said, I have noticed that there are some suggestive items near the checkout, which is fine, but as a teacher who has mentioned the Read 10 program to my 3rd grade students, I feel slightly uncomfortable having them go here knowing those things are visible in the one place they'll probably have to go through in this big bookstore. Now, reviewing not as a teacher but as a person... This is an awesome place for book-lovers who read for the story, not the cover: Some books on shelf may be worn down (small folds on paperback, slight fades on the spine, I assume they were traded in) but that makes them super affordable! I love to support, and personally I would prefer a once-used book for cheaper from a smaller business than a new $$ one from a chain (Don't worry, Bookmans has new stuff too though). My boyfriend and I are hard-core Bookmans fans and have been to every location. They have two Phoenix-area locations (this location and one in Mesa) as well as three locations in Tucson and one in Flagstaff. This location is my favorite. I just seem to find the best stuff here (I tend to find really good books, DVD's, and Blu Rays, mostly). Bookmans will take the following items in trade or for cash: books, magazines, CD's, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, DVD's, Blu Rays, video games, video game systems, musical instruments, puzzles, games, and housewares. It's best to get trade credit because they really don't pay a lot in cash. I like to spend my trade credit right away. My boyfriend is more disciplined and saves his up. What an awesome place. Don't let the fact that it's a trade and resale shop fool you--the store is clean, organized, and full of high-quality finds. We were especially excited about the huge selection of books and board games, which is what originally drew us in. There were also some really cool instruments to check out. This place is epic, and very well organized. I literally only had 10 minutes before I had to go to the airport, so I stopped here and made a beeline for the sections of interest to me. I found hidden gems in the categories, that I loved, checked out efficiently, and then was on my way. I've been shopping and trading at this store with my daughters since it opened 20 years ago. Recently, we bought a used game on DVD that wouldn't play. We didn't even want a refund -- just to have it buffed -- but were told they no longer offer that service here (actually, one of the employees said we could take it to Flagstaff for that). The manager, Jon, signed our receipt to allow a future refund since we'd removed the price tag, thinking we'd keep the game. When we came back a few days later for the refund, we were accused at the counter -- in front of other customers -- of swapping the disc for one in worse condition. We were told, "We don't sell games in that condition" and "We don't sell games for that price." It was humiliating. We did get the refund, but the public accusation has stayed with us. I didn't post this right away because I'd reported an issue here once before and didn't want to seem petty. But my daughter is still upset, and after 20 years of loyalty, being treated like liars over a $10 item was disappointing, humiliating and hurtful. read more

I've been to the different Bookman's many times. Yes it is dusty and somewhat eclectic but if you are looking to get used DVD's like British Tv series at discount prices it is the place to shop. Used books that may be out of print or if you just don't want to pay new prices and shipping on Amazon is also a good deal. I also like to peruse the gallery, most of the time I don't see anything I need to buy but once and a while I do buy something interesting. It takes a bit of time to look and you do need to be patient but if you are a voracious reader you can rally save a good deal of money. Plus they buy back books and sometimes decor. I have taken many boxes of items there and gotten store credit, do check it out if you haven't already been!! read more

This is a review of new books only! I love their used book selection but the way they handle new book sales is concerning. Usually, I've been pretty happy with my experiences at bookmans. Today I found a book that was listed as "new" but was very clearly damaged. The spine was detaching, the dust jacket was pretty rough, and there was obvious soiling to the pages. I'm sorry but if the spine to a hard back is coming apart, this is not a new book. This is a damaged book. I asked someone about the price of the book, and they offered me 10% off the "new" price, to which I declined. The person who helped me rudely responded when I declined the offer by saying "oh, no" and he threw the book on the counter and said "okay so you don't want it" and laughed at me. Don't sell damaged books at "new" prices, that's pretty shady, and no need to be so rude when a sale is declined. Their new book prices are usually not priced very competitively compared to other options. What's more concerning is none of their new books actually look new, which makes me wonder where they came from. Do better. read more

The service is awful. Walked in to exchange a couple of books and was not greeted at the door or offered help by anyone at any point. I searched for a staff member and when I finally got one's attention to ask where to exchange books his response was, "That's what we do at that counter over there". Then when I got over to the book exchange counter the staff member there was occupied so I waited to the side until he was done with his task. Bookman's is so AWESOME! They have both new & used books, magazines, collectibles, home décor, CDs, DVDs, video games, puzzles, board games, jewelry, musical instruments, and collectible toys. They also have NEW gift items and greeting cards. I love the overall unique selection. They have a fantastic selection of gently-used rubber stamps in their Craft Department. It's hard to find unique rubber stamps, since there are no more little mom and pop stores that sell them. The big box chain store's selection are boring and forever the same. They do accept trade for cash or store credit. Bring your items in to the Trade Counter and they will call your name when the staff have processed your items to see what they have accepted or declined. Used books are 1/2 the cover price. General pricing is reasonable. Some collectible are "market price". Much better than shopping at overpriced thrift stores. Clean restrooms. Friendly staff. Plentiful parking. I was so excited to go to Bookmans, I had my kids clean out all of their books so we can exchange them which they were very excited. Getting into the store I was lost, I didn't know where to go and there was a map that I was able to use to navigate my way to the correct area. The gentleman that helped was friendly enough, we left their books to be looked at and wondered around. A wonderful woman helped us find books that we were looking for so she was great and saved us time. The processing of their books took longer than I excepted and I was not given an actual timeframe. I made sure my kids were aware that they weren't going to get much for their books and even if they got 50cents they will be happy. What I didn't expect was for Bookmans to take none of them, we walked in with about 5 bags and not one book was taken. The lady that informed me wasn't nice about and just said, we get a lot of kid books so we aren't taking these, in a tone that could have been a little more sincere. My kids visibly upset and there was no sincerity in her voice. I get it, they receive a lot of books but we were also buying books, there has to be a balance there somewhere or maybe find a way to expand the kid zone. Unfortunately I bought books because my kids had them picked out and I love that they love to read and don't want to deter them from that. I've been going to bookmans for a long time now. I recently just traded in a Nintendo switch they gave me 50 more dollars and what GameStop wanted to give me. I've also traded in over the decades book after book after book. This is a spacious store but it's not very clean. There's a strong musty odor and the books and vents are coated in a thick layer of dust, along with many roof leaks and mold spots. Staff was incredibly unfriendly, only offered me around $5 for 20 newish books. Won't be back! read more

As others have commented, they offer reasonably fair trade in for used media and their selection on offer is always changing. Customer service, crazy how Customer service does not exist kids make no eye contact and aviod communicating at all costs,and very unorganized. I used to teach small classes here untill they stopped assisting me with set up and even communicating with me I had the managers email as well as cell number. Learning lesson for me never come back to this location so sad because I used to buy all of my books and school materials here. Professionalism and additional training for management and books elders is highly recommended. Don't apply y here if you really enjoy books,they never communicate with candidates let alone people actually in the store. One of the books elders didn't even know the current manager still worked there:(I'd rather work for a more organized and respectful company,I now do not purchase anything from this location,and I'm so glad. Please Bookmans hire people who don't look inconvenienced and angry every time a customer asks for assistance. I do not understand having half of the collectible stock upfront behind the register if some people are annoyed when people have to ask to look at the items in stock. I've loved Bookmans for many years! Just recently had an amazing experience. Though the store isn't up-to-date on tech, I asked for help finding a book and a very sweet employee helped me find it. Another book we couldn't find, and she double checked to see what it said in their system. Above and beyond customer service always! I will not be returning, and this is why!! So I went into Bookmans last night. While walking inside, I walked past a woman who did nothing but look me up and down and roll her eyes. (At this point, I didn't even know she was an employee; she was wearing no nametag or anything.) I walked to the back counter where the games are sold and stood there for maybe 7 minutes and never saw anybody that looked like an employee. After waiting, I went to the front counter that had a really long line with only one cashier and noticed an employee. I called out "excuse me, sir." And was greeted with a rude "give me a minute," and the employee never even turned around to look at me. I kind of stood there in shock for 30 seconds, to which he came back and asked in a rude tone "What can I do for you, sir?" I said I have these game books that I'd like to trade in. He responded in a tone as if I worked there and was asking a stupid question, "It's over there in the book section." At this point, I'm pretty annoyed but just want to sell my books since I'm moving and don't need them. I walk over to the books counter and see an empty counter with an employee over there by himself shutting off a PS4. He purposely kept his attention on the PlayStation that was powering down as to not look my direction until the phone rang when all of a sudden his time was free and he was the most friendly employee on the phone. Was never acknowledged by this employee for the approx. 3 minutes I stood there. As I decided enough was enough and proceeded to leave, the same woman that looked me up and down was walking behind the counter and still never said a word.
