I brought in a box of stuff to sell and staff was friendly and explained the process-they take the entire lot and offer a price for everything. Although I didn't get much for the dvds I brought in, I was given a 10% off coupon for bringing in items to sell. I went in for puzzles and magazines. Puzzles are $7-8 with a wide selection. They have a variety of magazines for $1 and the recent releases are $3.99. Great book selection. FYI they don't give plastic bags so bring your own bag. Nice little used bookstore. Selection about the same as a small Barnes & Noble. Not sure how much they give in trade ins compared to Bookmans. My only issue was how far they are from me. This is a fantastic, local, secondhand bookstore. They're not as big as Bookman's, which I frequent regularly, but I always come here every so often too because their stock is different. Not only do they have used books at lower costs, they also sell discount priced new releases. They have a great kid and chapter book selection, as well as sell some vinyl and music. Their staff are always friendly and professional, and I find their buy back rates to be decent. What a great bookstore! I could spend hours in there honestly. read more

Half Price Books - Cactus & Tatum, AZ I've been a customer at this bookstore in the past, both buying and selling, and used to appreciate the straightforward process. Unfortunately, my recent experience on selling left me feeling disappointed and taken advantage of. In the past, the process was simple: you'd bring in your books, they'd sort through them, offer you cash for the ones they wanted, and return the rest. That's what I expected when I brought in a large collection (about 60-70 books). However, the policy had changed -- without any notice posted in the store or communication from staff. Now, they simply offer a lump sum for everything you bring in, and you don't get any books back, regardless of whether they intend to sell them or not. When I returned to the counter, they offered $43 for the entire lot. I was caught off guard. I questioned the change and was told, "We assumed you knew," even though I hadn't been in the store for a long time. How could I be expected to know a major policy had changed if no one told me? I called the store manager from my car to say I did not like how my transaction had been handled and he again said "he assumed I knew". I asked what happens to the books you don't want and he said 'they get given to charity or we use them where we can". I wanted to give my unwanted books to my own charity not theirs. But I was denied this choice due to the new policy. It felt like a bait-and-switch. I was not given a choice or informed before the transaction -- which, in any reputable business, should be standard. In hindsight, I wish I had asked for my books back, but by the time I realized what had happened, it was too late. I won't be returning to sell or shop here again. The lack of communication and transparency in their updated policy left me feeling misled and cheated. If you're considering selling books here, make sure you fully understand their current policy before handing anything over. read more

We were in the bookstore this morning and my 6 year old son was pushing books back on the shelf when I was as placing an item back. He yelled at my children saying, "where are your parents!?" He was screaming at a 3 year and 6 year old when he could have asked nicely where their parent was and pulled me aside like a normal person would do and ask for us to place the books where they belong. He screamed at me and said that took a long time. Never have I been treated so terribly in a place of business and I will never bring my children in a place where a person appears to display anger issues towards small children. We will NEVER return to that bookstore and I will make sure the parents are aware that surround us our aware of this terrible encounter. read more

I was at a ladies retreat, when someone requested we go here during our break. This is a store with used and new books for sale, as well as games, puzzles, and literature related swag. I purchased baby board books, children's books and adult books. They had a selection of new 1000 price jigsaw puzzles, journals, and very appealing merchandise. The store is well organized and staff asked me a few times if they could assist me. I will be returning!! I'm a fan in Tucson of Bookmans and Half Price Books provides the same experience. A couple of days later, Colin, the manager of the store, called me. He said that they had undervalued one of my books. Sorry but have to give them a 1 star. Brought in 60+ books. About 30% were hardbacks. Was offered right under $13. That is laughable because as I waited, I obviously browsed and saw that most of their books were on sale for $5-$10. That's an offer less than 20¢ per book at they will sell all of them at $5 or more. And yes I took the offer because I had driven all the way over from the west valley, so at least I got my gas money back. Leaving this review so others know to just skip this place and sell somewhere like Facebook Marketplace. You'll even do better at a garage sale selling them for 50¢.. read more

I love going to this store. I love bookstores in general but this one is especially charming. It has a little bit of everything both old and new. You never know what you'll find. The prices are good. They're not zero or rock-bottom but they are reasonable given that they have to pay rent and employees. I intend to keep coming here and I recommend it to others. read more

Well organized with friendly staff. We came in with a huge list of books. Inside is organized well, it was easy to find the area we wanted. The list consisted of about 30 books interested in reading, we only found three as all are very popular. Staff took time to look up their computer system one by one and he found four other books at another location nearby. He offered to transfer them to this location but we decided to drive there to purchase on the same day. They also have clearance sections where books are $2-3 each! I ended up finishing intriguing history book for $2! I started reading it already and so far pretty interesting. We get lots of books from library but sometimes we like to read over and over again. It's nice to have own paper copies of books. read more

I've been helping a boy with severe Autism 3x per week for the last 3 years. During that time I've read to him "Pete the Cat" at least twice per week. I don't even need to hold the book to recite it to him anymore. It's time for some new material for my friend. I picked up Dr Seuss books- "There is a wocket in my pocket", "The sneetches" and "one fish , two fish , red fish , blue fish" today all for a great price. I absolutely love this book store. It's family owned and operated. They also buy and sell used books. In addition to kids books they have New York Times best sellers. I love giving books as gifts. I'm kinda on the fence. They have a very nice vinyl collection. I found two KISS solo albums - one by Gene and the other by Ace. If Paul and Peter were also there it would have been a complete set but since they weren't, I had to pass. A bit over priced on the vinyl but maybe it's worth it considering you're not paying for shipping and having someone steal your packages off your porch. So I guess maybe you could say, not too high on price. Okay so I rolled up with two very large shopping bags filled to the top with books. Despite closing in 8 minutes, they still went thru my books and presented an offer on most of the stuff. I felt like it could have yielded a higher offer but I accepted for the following reasons: 1) the bags were heavy loading into my trunk and Schelping them into the store. Do I really wanna carry that stuff back , NOPE! 2) Good luck on me finding a buyer willing to buy all of my kids old books. 3) If I ended up giving the books away which was going to end up happening, I still wouldn't see a dime back So , I made a few bucks unleashing these books from my closet, I might come back and try my luck on selling some DVD's read more

I've been obsessed with reading as of late. There's no reason to pay full MSRP for a gently used books. There's so many used books in available just like kitties and puppies. Don't buy new. Buy gently used. This location of Half Price Books is located right off the 51 & Cactus. Super convenient location and relatively easy to get in and out of. There is plenty of ample parking as they're adjacent to a Target store. The entryway is clean and the employees are so friendly! Just about everyone greeted me and a few asked me if I needed any assistance. I found the crime, mystery, thriller and horror sections and was left to browse for almost an hour. The store itself is also quite clean, well organized and so reasonably priced! I picked up a few Stephen King novels to add to my collection and a Joe Hill novel. There were several other books on my TBR list I found. I could have filled up my trunk with books, but I opted to just take home a few titles. Juliann (sp? sorry! I didn't catch the spelling of your name. I'm so sorry!) took my hard-earned cash and her friendly demeanor added to my pleasant shopping experience at this Half Price Books location. The store manager Jennifer at Half Price Books located in Paradise Valley is one the rudest individuals I've ever met in a store manager position. To sum it all: I went into the store and gave a representative my name to wait outside due to their current pandemic policy. Fine no big deal. However after waiting about 15 minutes in the AZ sun, three people came out and she allowed two people in. When I questioned why wasn't I called in she stated hold on. A few minutes later two more individuals walked up and she came out and let them in. I asked why did you let them in before me? She then rudely flipped out her paper tablet and blurted out they are on the list! I again asked back why did you let them in before me after I've been out here for almost 30 minutes?? Mind you it's a 3000+ sq ft store with only 8 people in at time. Jennifer becomes irritated and states that's it you're not coming in at all. I ask who the store manager was and she said I am! I asked for her district manager number and she refused to give it me! Then she slams the door! I advise anyone who who values being treated fairly and respectfully DO NOT go to the Half Price Book Store in Paradise Valley on Cactus Road. Jennifer is a horrible store manager and should be removed from that position. The most disappointing part is nobody should be treated differently particularly during these times. Oh well I guess I'll have to find my reading materials elsewhere. ‍ Poor leadership at this particular location. I will say this I was able to speak to customer service at corporate and they ensured me they will handle this so we shall see. read more

Worst service and rude staff. We spend hundred of dollars at half price books every month. They closed the one on camelback and being in town for the weekend we went to the one on Cactus. My kids were looking for books my wife was working remotely and asked kindly for a spot to plug her computer in as it was dying. She didn't ask for WiFi or anything. They book buyer went off on her and how they were not a provider of WiFi. Which isn't what she asked for. She needed power for five minutes. Where is the decency and kindness. He was rude to my wife in front of my kids. Never acceptable. They just spent $95 this visit. I will write reviews at Google as well and anywhere else I can. Half Price Books is the best. There are so many great, current titles to choose from and the buy counter works so quickly. I brought in three bags of books and sold half for about $30. Most books were in great condition and new - I buy and read books a lot, probably too much if I'm selling three bags of books with more books to spare at home. They are a little less finicky than Changing Hands (which I also love) so you may get more bang for your buck on older titles. Great selection with paperback and hardcover copies of many books. This is a dangerous store to live nearby. They always have great selections of new arrivals that are far cheaper than the retail list price. Their plethora of used books are also amazing, and I tend to grab things even when I didn't want to add another book to my shelves at home. They also have artful journals, stationary, and greeting cards. The staff is always friendly, and when I bring my dog inside, they always offer him treats if he does a trick they ask. All staff are wearing masks, and have signs reminding shoppers to stay distanced. I made an appointment to trade in some books, and although it was nice to be able to walk in whenever prior to COVID, setting the appointment was nice as it took less time to get my offer. This place is definitely a great store! And if I'm ever looking for a specific title, the staff is quick to look it up for me and offers to have it transferred from another store if they don't have it here. read more

I love this half price. It's not as big as other locations but still has a good selection. I come in pretty often to see what new items have shown up and there are always several things in the clearance section that catch my eye. I also like how they organize and label shelves by topic so you can easily find what you may be interested in. The staff here have always been friendly to me, from the buy counter to the cashiers. They are always willing to answer questions and help too. I've sold to them several times and never had any issues. Usually I don't have any price point in mind though and am really just looking to get rid of stuff I don't read/watch anymore. I'll take whatever they offer, and usually they'll donate anything they don't want to buy. If you are particular about a price you are looking for, then maybe this isn't the first place to check, but I don't know details on the pricing model. Fun place to go to and hang out. My daughters father plays disc golf and she was looking for a book for him about the "sport." We were having a discussion about if disc golf was considered a sport and one of the employees overheard us and joined our discussion. We all stood around for a good 20 minutes debating our opinions. Always a good time when total strangers take part in a fun and open debate. We concluded our discussion that discus throwing was a popular sport in Greek and Roman athletics... so maybe disc golf is a sport. I didn't see a single book that was overpriced. Some books look newer than others, but that just gives them character and generally makes them cheaper. I'm not from the area but will be back to this bookstore whenever I'm in the neighborhood.
