Every time I stop by Bookmans Entertainment Exchange in Mesa, I manage to find at least one hidden…read moregem in the comic book section. In fact, I can usually find something to check off my ever-growing wish list--which is why I keep coming back. The catch? You're going to have to put in some serious time digging through the racks. The bagged-and-boarded comics are loosely organized by DC, Marvel, and Indie, with the individual titles generally alphabetized. They also have a section of bundles, which is always worth a look if you're hunting for complete runs. Unfortunately, nothing in the bundles made it onto my wish list this time. After spending a considerable amount of time working my way through the DC and Marvel sections, I wandered over to the magazine racks and discovered even more comics--some bagged and boarded, along with plenty of raw comics that were definitely in the low-grade, $1-bin neighborhood. The downside? This section appeared to have absolutely no organizational system. Consider it the comic-book equivalent of an archaeological dig. Bring patience. And possibly snacks. I also checked out the video game section to see if there were any must-haves hiding behind the glass. I found a few games in the locked cabinet, but some were priced about the same as buying a brand-new copy. I'm not really sure how that makes sense for a resale store. If I'm buying used, I'm expecting at least a little bit of a "used game" discount. Overall, Bookmans is worth checking out if you're hunting for comics, especially if you enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Don't expect everything to be perfectly organized or easy to find. Be prepared to spend some quality time flipping through racks, digging through the less-organized sections, and hoping the comic-book gods smile upon you. I didn't walk out with a massive haul, but I did find something worth adding to the collection--which makes the hunt worthwhile. Four stars for the potential, the selection, and those occasional hidden gems. ‍

I was shopping, and waiting for my trade offer for some items I brought in. I asked to look at a Collector Comic Book that was locked in a case. I asked the staff member if I could take the book out and look a it because I wanted to make sure nothing was cut out of the comic. He immediately became defensive, and his attitude became hostile. I said "if there is anything cut out it's not worth $25 and I want to check. If I damage it while looking at it, I'll pay for it." His response wasn't helpful or understanding, it was pushy and abusive. "You should just get these while you see them. No one has these, and I've never seen one in our store since I've been here". I said "I have been collecting comics all of my life, and if there is anything cut out, it's not worth $10 to me". Again, instead of being friendly and asking anything helpful or asking questions, he was pushy and forceful, and became even more irritated when I pointed out the water damage on the back of the comic and told him I didn't want it. He was very unfriendly from the start. A toxic person, to be as kind as I can be. I received notice that my trade offer was ready, but I cancelled my trade offer, and walked out of the store with the items I had brought to trade. I WILL NEVER RETURN AS LONG AS THAT PERSON WORKS THERE. When I advised the staff of what happened, they seemed disinterested in doing anything. I asked them "how can you allow a person who treats customer this was to work here, and why would you want to work here if the business allows this?" They all looked at me with blank stares on their faces. A manager did talk to me, but it was the same attitude as the rude employee. He didn't introduce himself my name. He didn't try to find out the name of the employee. His attitude, like the rude staff member, was an attitude of not wanting to be there, an attitude of feeling irritated that they have to actually talk to a customer and assist them, an attitude of superiority and entitlement, an attitude that their customers do not matter to them and that they don't respect people in general. I advised their manager on duty that I work as a customer service consultant, and the employees treatment was unacceptable. He did offer complimentary credit, but did not indicate how much. I declined and told them honestly "I don't care if you pay me a Billion dollars in cash, I don't want it if that person works here. What he did was unacceptable and he should be fired". I am sure they won't do anything, and I want everyone to know that Bookman's is a TOXIC company who does not appreciate their customers, and they will screw you over and abuse you if you go there.

This is not a pop-up. This is not a drill. This a record store. This is not just any record store…read more This is Eastside Records raised from the dead (again!) and for realsies. And I got to pop in Thanksgiving weekend (shop small Saturday people!). I'll be honest. As far as record stores go, I'm not sure this is truly "Woohoo as good as it gets!". But, for me -- a girl who was willing to take a bus from Ahwatukee to Mill Ave (in sweltering AZ summer heat no less) to get to Eastside's original location to browse CDs, upcoming show flyers, buy posters, surreptitiously sneak glances at cute boys (with an eye on their taste in bands) and buy tickets to punk shows --I am over the moon that Eastside is back and offering a place to peruse vinyl in Tempe. Be prepared: this isn't your curated, neatly displayed, Urban Outfitters bullshit record shopping. This is records shopping from a guy who is obsessed with records. They. Are. Everywhere. Stacks and stacks spilled out of crates and almost blocked the entrance. But there is a system, sort of. There are bins with genre markers. Big enough artists get their own marker to make them easier to find. There are used, there are new. There are third-party sellers tables (though not clearly marked as such - but the price tags are a different color). Come prepared to spend time *digging*. That is the best part of record shopping anyway: the hunt. I found the prices to be fair. I spent $8 on some, $18 on others. There are stacks and stacks of $1 records (though I didn't check the quality of them) and of course more collectible/special edition items for $35+ If you have a record player go check it out. Give yourself plenty of time and don't drag someone who isn't willing to help you look or at least has a passing interest in vinyl. They'll be bored and you'll fee bad ;)

TEMPE 7/18/2016: So I bring in 8 collectible, sellable records to this store and they offer me $2.45 cents for them. How *#%@^ insulting right? I ask where they came up with that price and then said I wouldn't take less than $10 for my BOB MARLEY JA 12'. She says the computer sets the price and they weren't really interested in any of my records anyway. Not interested in an original pressing JA MARLEY 12" on TUFF GONG huh? I ask if they know anything about vinyl at this point right? It's gonna be marked at $19.99 so give me $10 in trade. How hard is that? She says she'll put $2.99 on it. I say you have more than that price on a Melissa Manchester record that no one will EVER buy! So I asked to see the manager and he came over and said that they could only offer me the $2.45. I said calmly that you can't have my PRINCE BUSTER GOLDEN OLDIES for less than $20 trade. He looked it up and said that they only go for $10 and he offered me $3.00. YOU CAN'T HAVE MY UK PRINCE BUSTER GOLDEN OLDIES VOL 1 FOR MERE PENNIES! GET REAL! He says and get this, "take it or leave it" Great customer service skills right! Totally disses me. Not cool. I wasn't rude to him but I did let him know that the offer was insulting. Very insulting. I even called back that night to re-affirm so and politely I might add. So here's the sad part for them - I put back 7 records ($70+) so they don't make any money from me and they have no new old stock - I brought good sellable stuff - that's all I really have. So here's the sad part for me - I am 53 years old now and have been shopping at this Tempe location since I was 16 (they were more near the campus then - I used to bug the crap out of Brad - the owner) and I can't go back to this location - or others as this lowballing seems to be their thing these last few years. Total disrespect. I am a pretty avid record buying consumer. Good luck with this philosophy ZIA - you're gonna need it because that is just bad business. I can't imagine it would be a fun place to work either as people would always be mad at the cannibalistic offers they offer. I am on a ventilator and I have a Trac. I use a power wheelchair because I have very little movement in my body. These conditions make it very hard for me to wear a mask and drive my power wheelchair. On October 23, 2020 I was refused entry into Zia Records because I cannot wear a face mask. The store employee stated that I could shop on line but could not come into the store because the policy requires masks on everyone. My friend even showed that there was an exception for people with medical conditions to be exempt from masks requirements by government guidelines. But I was told I still could not go in the store. The Maricopa County March 11, 2020 requirements for masks state under categorical exemptions section B point i: "For persons who fall into the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guidance for those who should not wear Face Covering due to a medical or mental health condition or developmental disability". Just by looking at me it is clear that I fall under this exemption. Yet Zia Records does not recognize this exemption. I called to talk to the store manager the next day and he reaffirmed that I am not welcomed in the store without a mask. Then once again I was told I could freely use their website to purchased anything I would like. I do not understand how anyone would believe that, as a disabled person, I would be happy being locked in a room because I cannot function as a normal person. To verify the information, I called another Zia Records and I was told the same thing. It is clear that this is a corporate policy. To create, or enforce, rules that are targeting a single class by its very nature is discrimination. Zia Records has targeted the disable class of citizens to practice this discrimination. I cannot understand why Zia Records would change standards just to exclude disabled people, but it is clear that they are doing just that. I would ask that if you do not support discrimination please do not support Zia Records until they learn not to discriminate. read more

I've been visiting Zia Records for years. I have always supported it and it has been one of my favorite places to go. For about the past years I have not had any good experiences here. Last time I made a visit I was offered a bottle of water as I waited for my trade ins. After drinking the bottle of water I felt suddenly ill and passed out. The assistant store manager was kind enough to help me up. What I didn't notice is that I woke up in a "storage" room with my pants around my ankles. I'm not sure what the assistant manager did while I was out but I defiantly woke up with a smile on my face. On my way out the assistant manager gave me a card with his number on it.
