Came from Decatur to eat some dim sum and was very pleasantly surprised. Food was great; only compliant would be that there was hardly any broth in pork soup dumplings. We liked the fact that the workers didn't come check in on us as often as most restaurants would. Once all customers but us had left and it settled down, we noticed the staff sat down and ate together. A sentiment that we appreciate as we are Pacific Islanders. Zhang's Kitchen steps up the game by offering online ordering on their regular and dim sum menu, and it's an easy decision when cravings for Cantonese food hit you while you're in the neighborhood. On a recent visit, fried garlic ribs and yang chow fried rice were capably rendered. The snow pea leaves with mushrooms was excellently flavored as was the extra crispy fried pork chitterling, cooked as requested. General Tao's chicken was only ordinary, and the one misstep in the order was the Hong Kong style beef with egg...wasn't expecting the fried beef to be swimming in an egg sauce, so maybe a better menu description with pictures might have set better expectations. I didn't partake in the siu mei offerings this time, but made a note to try their bbq on the next visit. I've visited this restaurant on a number of occasions. It is a family owned establishment that serves Cantonese Chinese food and offers Dim Sum by order on the weekdays and by cart on the weekends. The ambience is relaxed and the decor is colorful and festive. I like the white paper lined table cloths, my son usually draws on them or plays tick tack toe which keeps him occupied while we order food. I have tried multiple dishes, the ones that I like the most are: Vegetable Fried Rice- not your typical fried rice, no frozen peas and corn here! The rice has a nice presentation, it is very colorful, not overly oily, and is loaded with fresh tasting veggies such as bok choy, zucchini, and carrots. My entire family loves this rice, even one of my kiddos who doesn't like zucchini, but will eat it in this rice. Peking Duck- I love the presentation of this dish too. The duck is sliced with the skin placed on top. The other parts of the duck are served in the marinade, which is absolutely delicious. The green onion is served curly with slivered cucumbers and sauce. Steamed buns also accompany this dish. Salt and Pepper Calamari- I love the flavor of this dish, it rocks! The calamari is nice and crispy and the salt and pepper seasoning adds a unique flavor to this dish! Various Dim Sum- Too many to name, but a few of my favorites are: Phoenix claws (chicken feet) very flavorful and tender. Pork and Shrimp dumplings- hold together and are tasty, Soup Dumplings- the mixture inside is very delicious, but the only downside is that the soup has a tendency to leak out, but overall it is still good! There hasn't been one person who I've brought here who hasn't enjoyed the food. My father came to visit and I took him here and he fell in love with the veggie-fried rice. This is definitely one of my favorite Chinese food places to go to with family and friends! The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is as with most mom and pop places the service could be spotty and inconsistent depending on when you visit. read more

We read multiple positive reviews for Zhang's Kitchen so figured we would try out their dim sum. We were very disappointed with the food. The two waitresses were friendly and the food came out quickly. Their dim sum is not traditional as you order from a menu rather than selecting what you want from a cart. The beef rice noodles consisted of old noodles wrapped around barely touched unseasoned ground beef and soy sauce & vinegar poured on top. We ordered the fried bean curd skin expecting it to be only the bean curd skin rolled and deep fried since no where on the menu did it state otherwise. They came out filled with shrimp which we do not eat. We asked if they could make us some without shrimp and the waitress told us that they are premade. She did not offer to remove the charge from our ticket nor to replace it with something else even as we finished up - leaving the uneaten dish sitting on the table. While these two dishes disappointed us, my husband and daughter did enjoy the salt and pepper fish which helped them to leave without still being hungry. read more

I have been waiting for a half hour with not even an apology until I asked how much longer. All I got was they were swamped and that I have to wait. Dad asked me to pick a restaurant for us to eat at for Chinese New Year, so I hopped on Yelp to help me make a decision. I noticed the "Hot and New" rating here and decided to take us since I'd been craving dimsum; my dad had actually been to this place when it was still JS Chen so he was interested in trying the new establishment out. I called ahead on Saturday morning and was greeted by Cherry who took us down for a reservation of four at 11:30. There were several tables already being served as we arrived and were seated, and the wait line started forming not long after, so be aware of that on the weekends! The interior was remodeled and is very clean and bright. Some of the tables are pretty close together but for our purposes it was fine. We ordered from the dimsum carts as they came around; they had a wide variety of dishes. My favorites were the tofu skin pork wrap (super flavorful and the texture of the tofu skin was excellent), the turnip cake (perfectly fried, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, ask for a side of hoisin sauce!), and the stuffed eggplant, but everything we tried was good! One thing was that because it was so busy, it took them a while to come by to refill our waters, and we had to remind them of our turnip cake and stuffed eggplant orders a couple of times. The food was satisfying enough that it didn't really detract from our overall experience, though. My dad really enjoyed the spicy chicken feet and my brother really liked the shark meat dumplings as well as the beef spare ribs. The next time we're craving dimsum close to home, we will definitely be back! read more

I found out that this JS Chen's is now Zhang's Kitchen and they have Dim Sums all day, so I went there to try. Besides, I wanted to check out the new menu. I ordered salt and pepper shrimp from the Dim Sum menu and it was huge and so good. I also ordered shrimp/scallop dumpling and chives dumpling and they were delicious as well. The waitress(I think she's also the owner)was very nice and attentive. I had to send back the items, because they had meat in them. She graciously took them back and gave me something with no meat in it. She even gave me a discount on the bill Very impressive, because I wasn't even expecting that. She's truly a class act! My daughter and I got food poisoning from the dim sum. If you're used to Cantonese dim sum, this place is not for you. The taste is off. We got the siu mai, haw gow, tripe and shrimp balls. Also a plate of seafood chow mein, which comes with sauce. The seafood didn't taste clean and the sauce was bland. The tripe was a orange color versus the plain clear color. This place used to be J.S. Chen's and I hadn't had the chance to come here then, because I lived closer to the one off of 75. But once I saw that they had changed owners but still managed to be Dim Sum, I was intrigued to try. I came on a Sunday afternoon after church and it was pretty packed with both asians as well as non-asians. Most of the workers there were Canto speaking, so that kind of eased me as well. They do the cart style of dim sum, so when the first cart came, we tried a couple of dishes. We had the shrimp dumpling, sui mai, bbq pork bun, egg custard bun, and the shark fin dumpling. My first bite went to the shrimp dumpling. OMG, what did I sink my teeth into?? Despite my nasal congestion and altered taste buds, that did not taste right at all. I really thought my illness was making my first experience really poor, but my husband confirmed that it wasn't me. And then I went to taste everything else and nothing was redeeming itself. They didn't seem fresh, the ingredients weren't the norm, the buns were not soft and fluffy, and the egg custard is suppose to be melted liquid gold inside....it was solid! I always finish my bread part of the steam bun, and that bun was so nasty that I just inhaled the bbq pork which was mediocre and just tossed the bread. My husband and I were so disappointed.....we just gave up on dim sum entirely! We decided to get the Singapore Stir Fried Vermicelli. The curry didn't really sink into the dish; it was more sprinkled on top. So it didn't quite make it either, but we were still hungry so it had to do. We will not be stopping by ever again. If you've never had dim sum, you might like it. If you've had good dim sum...it's not even comparable! You're better off with J.S. Chen or Kirin Court...until Dallas comes up with somewhere more competitive like Houston's Crown Seafood Restaurant. Let's not even go to the west coast....cuz we're not even close. I always, wherever I go for dimsum, order : siumai, blackbean spareribs, bbq pork, bbqpork bun, something salt & pepper (usually calamari but today had tofu), and my fave taro puff aka deep fried taro. Everything was delicious! Taro puff was extra good and flavorful. Better than most places! Altho, the Black bean ribs could have used some more black beans.
