We came for dim sum and to be honest, probably the worst dim sum place I had. We order shu mai, pork spare rib, fried shrimp ball, shrimp dumpling and shrimp fun roll and hot and sour soup. Starting with the soup, the soup taste like drinking a bowl of vinegar, so sour. The pork spare rib had no flavor, tasted like leftover from the night before that the meat tasted bad. New management. The staff smokes in the kitchen, it smells so strong. Used to be a 5-star, worth-the-wait dim sum spot. Now it's not even 1 star. We came in at 11, and the restaurant was completely empty. We were the only table there. After waiting an hour, most of our food finally came out, but we were still missing three dishes. The staff didn't even realize it until we asked them to check the paper we marked our order on. The food quality was also extremely disappointing. The dumplings tasted freezer-burned, dry, stale, and microwaved instead of fresh. The scallops came out undercooked. The egg fried noodles were inconsistent -- some noodles were hard and crunchy like they weren't fully cooked, and even the onions were still hard instead of soft and cooked through. I got served spoiled meat inside the bbq pork Cheung Fun, and it tasted like cigarettes. Absolutely disgusting.

We used to enjoy the dim sum at this place and have visited several times in the past, but today was very disappointing. Most of the dim sum items seem to have changed, and it feels like they may have changed the chef. Some of the servers were very nice--attentive, patient, and genuinely trying to explain things to us, which we appreciated. Some was just spoke to us in Chinese words. However, the atmosphere feels dated and could really use a remodel. At this point, I can't recommend this place until they improve the dim sum or bring back the previous quality. Went for a Saturday lunch dim sum experience for my grandpa's birthday and he loved it. He really wanted dim sum but was also really craving lobster and a friend had suggested this restaurant. The service was really great. We were given a large table fairly quickly and it wasn't super busy which is surprising for a dim sum place on the weekend, but lucky for us, the service was great! There was no wait on carts and we received the food super fast. The lobster was great and we also ordered a very generous portion of crab fried rice. For me, I thought the dim sum was decent nothing was bad but I didn't think anything was especially great either, but I would go again if invited. This dim sum spot in Plano has been around for quite some time, and it's become our goto for a more relaxed brunch experince. This is our third visit, and we keep coming back because it's never as chaotic as the two more popular spots in the neighboring town especially during the weekend. Some context- my family has been coming to this restaurant since it was in Richardson- 30+ years. Friday night at 7 we were THE ONLY CUSTOMERS! It was a sign of things to come. One server for the entire place so she was doing orders, running the cash register, we had to write down the numbers of what we wanted. We ordered family favorites and were so disappointed. Where do I begin? Unfortunately I did not read the recent reviews about the change in ownership before going today. We have been to JS Chen before on several occasions over the years and zero issues (great service and great food). Today, however, was a complete 180. I noticed something was off when the restaurant workers spoke only Mandarin (usually a bad sign for a Cantonese restaurant). There also was not a soul in the restaurant around lunchtime. There also wasn't a hostess up front and just a couple of ladies babbling in the back of the restaurant. I had to wave at them to eventually be seated. The service did not improve as the meal went on. A worker never came to check on us during the meal. We had to flag someone down just to get them to add hot water to our teapot. Maybe the poor service could be overlooked if the food was good, but again, another 180 from the old JS Chen. The food was just awful. The shumai lacked any bite and just sort of crumbled as you ate it. Any dish that that had shrimp did not taste fresh and a bit sour. Another diner that came in after us had a similar complaint about the shumai and was pretty vocal about it with the wait staff. None of the dishes were particularly done well, portions were small, and frankly, all quite overpriced. The last problem capping off an awful dining experience was the debacle of the ordering process itself. They give you a sheet to fill out with the dim sum options, but they also roll around a cart. It's unclear if the cart is fulfilling your written order or if it is supposed to be more typical cart service. They don't check off your ticket/receipt consistently as dishes are placed on your table, so in the end, you don't know if your final tab is the ticket/receipt (like most dim sum places) or if the order sheet you originally filled out. In other words, there is no record of what dishes were actually delivered to your table, which is sort of fundamental for a dim sum place. In the end, they didn't bring out half of what we ordered on our order sheet, and it was super unclear if we were being charged for the food we ordered but they didn't bring out. We just paid whatever they asked so we could get the heck out of there. I can't imagine this restaurant will stay in business for long given the terrible service and awful food. We will never be returning and hope this review helps others avoid this once delightful restaurant. read more

Recently went to Chen. Apparently Anna, the old owner sold the restaurant. The king poa chicken was flavorless and had no peppers or peanuts. The pork and shrimp steamed dumplings were still good and so were the fried shrimp balls but overall, I was very disappointed in the food and the service and will not be going back. I never like to give a negative review until I have been to a restaurant at least twice. My first visit was in 2017, on a Saturday, when the dim sum carts were in full service & it was delightful. My next visit was 2 weeks ago and then again tonight. FOOD: we ordered 5 dim sum plates. The first to be served was steamed Chinese vegetables, which came out cold. When we sent it back, the manager explained they were steamed, yes, we know and steam is HOT. She took it back and it came out warmer, but not hot. The second was scallops (bay) in ginger with peas and carrots. It was passable. Next, we had chicken feet. While this is an acquired taste, can be quite tasty, if done right. These were not, the breading was too heavy and became soggy & laden. Our last two included shrimp and pork dumplings, which were tasted, but put back on the plate. The last hope was the shrimp egg rolls. It was obvious the oil was old and left an off-putting taste on the wrappers. ATMOSPHERE: the restaurant is fine, family-atmosphere. What irks me is a bathroom that is half functional. Soap & towel dispensers didn't work, but a bottle of soap was there and a roll of towels. SERVICE: this has always been minimal effort service. All three times, we had to ask for water refills, our checks, all while management is at the front desk waiting for door dash pickups. TIP: if you go, avoid the dim sum menu and stick to the Americanized dishes. read more

This place is exactly what you need when you want to get a quick dim sum fix. I'm not going to say it's amazing or someplace that will take your breath away. It's more like going to a El Fenix for Mexican food. Not the best but it's still going to satisfy. The service isn't very attentive but you can easily wave any person down and they will help you. This place USED to be great. Understanding it is now under new ownership. It's now a DISASTER. Dim Sum and dishes used to be great. Well made and fresh. Now depending on what you order, it is a best average. Most are below average to poor. A few are inedible. Shrimp items tasted a bit off. Service is pretty much completely lacking. Ordering is a mess. The whole experience was confused and disorganized. We could see we were not the only table with our hands up in the air completely confused as to what was joining on. Had no idea what or how they charged - just paid what they said . . . then got pressured to leave a larger tip - which we did just to get out of there. Will not be returning. Had a craving for dimsum and I was staying in town for work at a local hotel. I wanted to try a different place and this was pretty close with decent ratings. Got my normal go to dishes to compare with other dimsum places I've been to and it was pretty much what you would expect. Flavors were familiar and tasty. Not bland or overly salty. Came out hot and fresh from the kitchen. Mind you I came in for dinner around 7:30pm so I'm pretty sure they steamed my order right when I placed them. Expect to wait a few and I was fine with that. Portions are okay and like I said the flavors were great but it felt a bit overpriced. I didn't order any exotic like sharks fin. Just the normal Shumai, beef spare ribs which was quite small for the price. You can see from the picture and that was only one piece less than what it was when it served. Came here on Sunday morning for dimsum with a group of 6 friends. Although the restaurant was very busy, it was easy to find a table for 6. I had never really had dimsum before, so it was a wonderful new experience. The food was fantastic. I especially loved the soup dumplings and bbq pork baos. The shrimp dumplings and chicken and scallion dumplings were delicious as well. We also ordered the Kung Pao chicken, fried rice, and sea bass in black bean sauce. All three of these dishes were delicious! The only thing I would recommend before going to this restaurant is to bring a friend who speaks Chinese if you don't do so yourself. Although it is possible to communicate with the staff if you don't know Chinese, many if the waiters don't speak English so it is easier if you have a Chinese speaker in your group! read more

We have eaten here for at least 15 years - maybe longer. Noted something seemed off tonight. Found out they are under new ownership. No problem...or so we thought. They dont have a liquor license when we tried to order wine. Asked the waiter if we can get our own from the grocery store. He says yes. We do. Bring back 4 bottles of soju. A lady comes by our table. We tell her we brought it. She nods her head and goes to to the back. We finish dinner go to pay. They TRY to tell us $15/bottle!! My boyfriend say no and she says ok $15 total which he agrees to and tell Me when he gets back to the table. I was not happy and I want to talk to the owner and they tell me she cant speak english and I said she seemed to say $15 per bottle pretty well. She and another gentleman come to the front to talk to me. They try to say it was "only $15" and i try to explain to them that you cant not tell someone there is a cost to something and just charge a ridiculous amount and their response was we changed it to $15 what are you complaining about? And "so whats the problem?" So at that point I just said Ive come here for 20 years and I wont be coming back. read more

Service was deplorable - our server attempted to pressure us into leaving a higher tip and tried to force us to raise it.
