Malatang is a Chinese staple food, it is like pizza, chicken wings or bbq, you have to try to make it bad. The main differentiating between them is ingredients and broth. The main broth (Tomyum) is pretty tasty, I thought it would be thick and heavy but it is more like a soup (I did drink a bit and it was delicious). Ingredients vice it is just what you eat at buffets that has hot pot or malatang section. I found the lamb to be a bit better quality than buffets, fried egg old and stale (the only disappointment), green veggies quite a surprising delight (I usually don't eat that). I came here for lunch with the wife for our biweekly Friday lunch date. Zhangliang Malatang takes the concept of Asian "hot pot" with a DIY noodle bar. You literally pick your own ingredients from their huge ingredient bar using this gigantic salad bowl. You'll be charged $15.99 per lb of dry weight, and then they'll cook everything in the broth of your choice. Virtually every food group is represented: various fish balls, greens, root veggies, sliced beef and lamb, tofu, octopus and squid, eggs, and even exotic items like cogealed pork blood, braised intestines, and yes even frog legs. Their noodle options are also diverse - ramen (regular and purple-colored ube ones), soba, egg noodles, udon, and thin rice noodles. I enjoyed my Tom Yum soup with mild spiciness and got about 1.5-lb worth of ingredients: * 2 helping of fresh noodles - I like them thick and chewy * Slices of lamb - excellent, I would get more next time and less fish balls * Crown Daisy ("tong po") - an excellent green vegetable for hot pot * Bamboo Shoots * Lotus Roots * Various fish balls - note these are filling and some have additional ingredients like sea urchin inside. Picked up some food to go and it took a little longer than expected (15-16 min- I was in a hurry). You walk in, pick a bowl and tongs and select proteins, veggies, and carbs. They weigh your items and you make your broth selection. You are given 2 sauce containers (slight cost if you want more) per bowl and they pack everything for you. I appreciate that they cook the food and separate the broth from your cooked items so noodles don't get soggy. Since food is weighed, it can easily add up. My bowl was about $26 with tip. I have been to Zhangliang Malatang in Berkeley and wanted to try this location since it is so highly rated on Yelp. When you walk in, they assign you a table and then you grab a bowl and tongs to pick your ingredients. After that they weigh your bowl, with a one pound minimum at $15.99. This location actually has a bigger variety of food options compared to Berkeley. I noticed items like fried egg, marinated soy egg, and a wide selection of noodles. I ordered the tom yum broth and asked for medium spicy, but it came out very mild. The flavor was still good and overall just as tasty as Berkeley. Service was friendly and efficient too. The downsides are mostly about the space itself. The restaurant is about half the size of the Berkeley one and it gets really warm inside. They did not seem to have the AC on and I was sweating while eating. I was relieved every time the door opened because the outside air was cooler. The sauce bar setup is also cramped and feels awkward. At the end they gave out watermelon, which was a nice touch, but unfortunately it was not sweet at all. We had a great time at Zhangliang Malatong. They have an amazing selection of toppings to choose from. Perfect for folks with dietary restrictions and "picky eaters". Lots of fun for kids. Everyone can be happy and get just what they want! They charge you based on the weight of the toppings, $15.99/lb. There is a minimum of 1 pound of toppings, but they waive this requirement for kids. Little one got just under a pound - lots of seafood and two types of noodles. He said, "I liked everything!" He loved the beef broth, which was rich and creamy, "nice and hot" (temperature). They do have 3 non-spicy broth options: tomato, beef, or mushroom. But their most popular are the spicy "classical bone soup" bases. I selected the mild, which still has quite a bit of heat! If you're unsure, pick a non-spicy one and add chili oil at the end. All of the veggies are fresh and delicious. I loved their hand pulled "fresh noodles". Mushrooms are awesome! The tea eggs are great and I wished I got 2. DH is a fan of their lamb and soft tofu. They even have frog legs, although we didn't try it this time. The beef tendon is a little chewier than we would like. They have a variety of hot pot staples, like dumplings, fish cake, and blood cake. I felt like on my last recent visit, they have even less food ingredient choices than last time, and last time was already limited as well. Not sure why they have less of a variety compared to their other locations though. I am confused about the soup base because I asked the employee if the Classic Bone Soup and Beef Broth Soup were two different soups, and I was told the Classic Bone Soup was different, so I asked for the Classic Bone Soup, but was given the Beef Broth Soup. If your bow is full like half way, I would say that's about around 1.5 lbs. Don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach! Pro tip. They are very generous with the soup. So feel free to pour some soup out in a Togo container before you dive in. The Asian in us didn't waste a single drop of delicious broth. The beef broth is very flavorful. After some experience, I have learned not to pack my bowl so much because it can add up when you go weigh it. This place did not have as much variety as the other ones, but it was still a good amount. Mostly everything I wanted/needed. Baby bok choy, cabbage, potatoe wide noodles, fish balls, meat balls, squid, meats. The sauce bar is great! They had lots of variety of things there for us. Note that this isn't AYCE and instead joins the growing popularity of hot pot joints where you first select your ingredients and sauce, then go to the counter to weigh your bowl and actually place the order. You don't pay until the end, so be aware of everything that can add up. The staff seemed friendly and efficient, and our food came out in a short amount of time. There are two sections with a plethora of veggies, protein, and carbs for you to select from. I got spam, some greens, beef tripe, lamb, and quail eggs and ended up with a bowl that weighed about 1 lb. I was excited to try this Zhangliang Malatang since we went to the San Mateo one a few weeks ago, and it was so delicious that we were thinking about the delicious broth. As we walked in, one of the staff told us to sit down first. So we did, then another staff member asked us to stand up and get our food which is what we would normally do at other malatang restaurants so maybe the first guy was a new employee? Just a normal size bowl after weighing comes out to be average $20 to $25 which would almost get you AYCE at the other hot pot restaurants in the area. We've been to ZLM a couple times and they still have some improvements to their service to be made. ie. They close in the afternoon but because they wanted to leave 40 min early they asked if I could take out. I refused and they relented. The process is very fun. I like being able to control what meats/seafoods/vegetables/noodles/etc go into my food! Be careful though because your cost adds up quicks. The ingredients stand is very well kept here and they continue to refill and keep things in stock. The bowls are either $14.99 a lb for the soup or $15.99 a lb for dry mix! I opted for the dry mix because I was not feeling soup. It is automatically a mild spice so you can't control that. I had no problem with it and enjoyed the mild spice but for some in my party, the mild was too much. They didn't finish their meal. You weight your bowl, go sit or make your sauce, they cook, and then bring your food to the table. There is a sauce bar near the corner and a water refill station. I tried my friend's beef bone broth and it was very rich in Szechuan spice, but I'm the type of person who thinks Szechuan peppers taste like tv static. Although, their chili oil was mild and added flavor back into my food! At the sauce bar, the tub of chili oil was 90% oil and barely any chili crisp, so we asked one of the servers for some without that much oil. She was really sweet and got us some from the kitchen. The sauce bar also had satay, peanut sauce, sesame oil, oyster sauce, green onions, and cilantro. All these mixed together make the elite dipping sauce which each bite practically required. Visited on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed to the brim. Waitlist situation was a bit confusing as finding the clipboard was like playing iSpy (hint: it was on the counter behind the bowls). Groups were crowding around the entrance so it was confusing if you needed to line up. The restaurant itself is pretty small, especially the refrigerated section, which are two fixtures, similar to the ones in a grocery store where they store the vegetables.
