I went on a bit of a shopping spree here. It was like being a kid in a vegan candy store. The variety is incredible. Often places with vegan options have a single piece of banana bread that tastes like cardboard; not zest. The have everything from cookies to cakes to smoothies to bowls. ***2 1/2 stars*** This is a weird one for me, because I don't think this is necessarily a "bad" place - Zest is clearly very popular and was decently crowded when I was there. I don't think it's impossible to come in here and really enjoy the food/drink offerings. Ultimately though, it just wasn't my cup of tea palate-wise and if you're like me, it's going to be tough to find something that hits the spot. I stopped in right after the gym yesterday in the late morning. I'm a huge acai bowl fan and have been trying to find a more convenient source than the Playa Bowls all the way up 23 in Pompton Plains. Up until this experience, all of my acai bowl purchases have come from chains like Playa or Sweetberry (which unfortunately closed their location in nearby Little Falls during Covid). I ordered the Peanut Butter Powerhouse bowl, which featured unsweetened acai, banana, housemade granola, vegan chocolate chips and organic peanut butter. It's very similar in content to the OG at Playa Bowls, except with the addition of the chocolate chips. It just didn't taste that good. I thought the chocolate chips were a nice complement to the peanut butter, and the decision to go heavy on the peanut butter as its own layer versus a minimal drizzle was solid - it's the one area where I think they surpassed Playa. It also helped that the taste of the organic peanut butter and the vegan chips wasn't all that different from "normal" peanut butter and chocolate chips. However, everything else bordered on tasteless and was disappointing. I'm sure there are plenty of people who may disagree with me on this, but an acai bowl is already pretty healthy in the grand scheme of things. They tend to be higher in calories especially with the granola, but I always feel very peppy and glad I didn't opt for something naughtier like pizza. I just don't think it's necessary to get even healthier with something like this, opting to use unsweetened acai and granola instead of tastier alternatives. The same goes for the pastries. I also ordered a blueberry scone that honestly just tasted like cardboard - somehow even the blueberries barely registered on my tongue. It just feels like overkill. And honestly? I'm certainly not opposed to a healthy lifestyle; as mentioned above, this was a post-gym stop. I get it. But if opting for bread with gluten and sweeter granola cuts a few months off my life expectancy at the end of the day, I'd take that deal over eating the taste equivalent of cork during my extra time on Earth. That said, the girls behind the counter were very pleasant and accommodating. I got the impression that some of their equipment wasn't as efficient as the chains - one of their blenders, for instance, just looked like one you'd have in your kitchen versus an industrial one. As a result, they had to physically bang the mixer/ingredients together to complete the process, but that's a pretty easy fix. Regardless, they had great attitudes while also being a little swamped. They handled it well, so that's a pretty solid selling point in my view. I don't know that I'd come back without doing some careful research on specific products I'd likely enjoy (preferably ones that don't have something unsweetened as their number one ingredient), and I'd stay far away from the pastries/baked goods. read more

I assumed it was no longer good so I stopped eating it. Luckily no belly aches after it. But the redemption was in the baci truffle! A highlight here! My second time back, I got the matcha latte with oat milk, a homemade pizza with hummus & fresh tomatoes and a baci of course. The pizza was plain, couldn't taste the hummus but appreciated the fresh tomatoes on top. The "dough" was firm, thick & soft... I think it's sweet potato "crust", nothing spectacular tho. Came here for a quick to-go breakfast. I ordered the Berry Simple smoothie with hemp seeds as well as their special avocado toast of the day. The smoothie was honestly really disappointing. It was extremely bland and tasted like blended milk and ice. I definitely understand that they don't add sweetener or use sweetened milk (I actually prefer it this way without added sweetener), but there were virtually no berries in my smoothie despite the name of the drink. I couldn't even taste any bananas in there at all. I'm not sure if this is on purpose to try to cut costs or whether it's due to lack of staff training. I'm no Smoothie Queen but I have definitely made better smoothies at home. The toast was small for the price, but was bursting with flavor. We were in the area trying to go to the Pancake House but didn't realize their hours changed due to Covid. So I accessed Vegan places to eat on my Yelp app and came across this place which indicated it was 10 minutes from us in West Caldwell (near the pancake house). I wasn't familiar with Zest and never heard of it so I had no expectations but the description indicated it was also a bakery so that got me excited. So many options on the menu to choose from and a wide array of bakery treats that are all vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free! After studying the menu, we both decided on the Buffalo Blue Burger. It included "bacon" but what was the "bacon" made from. Turns out it's made from rice water and the young ladies there - both Nia and Jane were kind and professional as we asked several questions about the food and they answered every question so patiently. I was very pleased with the place up until this point. The restaurant was very clean and the decor was so adorable and inviting. The tables and chairs had naturally been blocked off due to Covid so that was appreciated as well. At this time, you may only take your food to go or dine-out where they have tables and chairs neatly placed outside but who wants to dine out in 100 degree weather. We took our food to go. If I stopped here my review would easily be 5 stars. Everything was near perfect at this point however, after eating the food on the way back home, sadly my review drops down to 3. The food was a complete no for me. We both ordered the Buffalo Blue Burger. First of all, the food wasn't even hot. I literally started eating it 3-5 minutes after I got it and it was cold. The "bacon" was so hard I was afraid I was going to break my tooth while eating it. The burger had NO flavor. Do they even use seasoning? We stopped in for lunch and it was packed and I see why! They have a lot of good vegan and vegetarian choices . I did the mashed avocado toast with sea salt and hemp seeds. It was tasty a bit pricey for one slice of toast however . My man had a great quinoa salad with tofu . We shared a "pizza" as well. Very tasty but again over priced for one small piece. The juice was great probably best I have had. I did the Detox and added a shot of CBd oil which actually was reasonable at two dollars. Zest is located off a highway in a nondescript area, but it's worth driving a bit out of the way to try. When you walk inside, you're greeted with a bright, spacious cafe setting with about 3-4 dining tables and a bar table. There are cute vegan sayings and photos of the owners & community on the walls. The owner and workers are friendly and more than happy to give recommendations off of the extensive menu. The counter, display case, and fridge, which take up half the room, are always filled with vegan + gluten-free baked goods. Everything is made in-house (I think) with wholesome ingredients. They have chickpea blondie bars, sweet potato brownies, "truffles," protein bites, several types of cookies, muffins, cookie dough, cake, pie, and more. Definitely try the chickpea blondie bar, which is decadent and sweet, with a dense and gooey texture. The food and smoothie / juice menus are extensive and parts of it change seasonally. About 90% of the menus are vegan. They have smoothies, juices, smoothie bowls, toast, sandwiches / burgers, loaded waffles (in summer), oatmeal bowls (in winter), and soup. I highly recommend the smoothie bowls, which I actually like slightly more than Playa Bowls, and loaded waffles, which consist of protein waffles topped with smoothie mixture, granola, fruit, etc. Like a dessert waffle, but with more wholesome, filling ingredients! I personally loved the Blue Mermaid Acai Bowl. The presentation and taste is great. My friend got a Peanut Butter Powerhouse acai bowl which was a little too rich and chocolates for my taste. It's a little pricey especially for the serving size. We also had their sweet potato brownie and the double chocolate cookie.
