The Italian bakery has remained a mainstay among the Garden State institutions since the arrival of Italian immigrants in the early 20th century. They brought with them the best of mostly southern Italian and Sicilian pastries, cakes, and cookies. These delicacies all share a mixed past, some equally as French as they are Italian, and others showing Arabic-Sicilian influence. Many of the items continue to be made in the Italian tradition, while others have morphed into something uniquely Italian-American. Located off 46 East in Fairfield, this family-owned and operated establishment, founded in 1962, is one of our favorites for sweet desserts and Italian pastries. Upon arriving on this Christmas Day at Calandra's Italian and French Bakery, a steady stream of patrons entered its door to an interior space big and nicely designed, awaiting their turns on several available lines. On display in their numerous cases, there were cookies to cannolis, an assortment of cookies, pies, cakes, custom cakes, jarred sauces, and homemade pasta. I decided on a coconut custard pie, a pecan pie, and several pasteis de nata. Everything was so good and simply amazing, with a variety of freshly baked goods that cater to all tastes, especially the pasteis, just how the bakeries in Newark's Ironbound district make them. Ok so the fact that this bakery is open until 9 is incredible with a great seating area. It's decorated in wicked / with wizard of oz cut outs. So cute The bakery goodies were amazing. The 4 of us each got samples of different pastries, donuts, cakes and tarts and each was better than the next. Coffee bar was just ok but it was after 8 pm when we arrived so to be expected. Although I didn't get to try the strawberry shortcake here, I did order a whole cake version to be delivered to a friend for her birthday via DoorDash. I clicked on the toggle indicating the order was a gift and was able to write a message that would be delivered to my friend via text. It was a rush order and I wasn't in town to enjoy it but my friend, the birthday girl, did. The bakery prepared the cake so beautifully and was so considerate (and instinctive because I forgot to request it) provided a happy birthday message on the cake. It was very thoughtful, so presentable, and per my friend, absolutely delicious. A long time traditional bakery in this area. As such, they have flourished and expanded as you'll find other establishments with the same name (Restaurants, etc.). Way too many choices when you walk in (and that's a good thing!). Hopefully, you are going to a party and you can order a box full of different items. My suggestion is that, if you do that, you get a knife and cut them up so you can have some of each. It's easy to get full if you eat the entire pastry or cookie, so getting samples of each worked great for us. They also have bread so if you're having sausage and peppers at your party, pick up some long rolls to make them amazing. Very clean inside, private parking lot that's easy to use. Be careful when approaching off of 46, the turn-in comes up quickly. Also, if you are in the mood for a quick slice of pizza, their neighbor has a very good slice. After a delicious meal at Kebabs and Kurries, stopped into Calandra's bakery in Fairfield. A massive sized bakery that offers Italian and French pastries, breads, cakes, cookies, gelato and even doggy treats! The choices were so many it was hard to chose! Opted for a few mini tarts, lemon meringe, key lime, passion fruit all were fantastic their shortbread crust is perfect. Their tiramisu cup was ok, lacked that coffee liquor taste as it tasted more chocolate. The mini creme brûlées were disappointing as it was not fully set and watery. The ultimate choice was the raspberry and cream cookie tower. Fresh raspberries with sweet cream on a decadent shortbread cookie was perfect in every bite. Easter hot cross buns were soft and fluffy. Service was quick and courteous. A nice addition would be specialty coffees. Will return to try breads cookies and more items. read more

I was craving a cheesecake, so I went in and ordered a simple classic cheesecake. It was really good and creamy! We also ordered a custard chocolate mousse, but it wasn't our favorite. Italian pastries are my favorite and French are right behind them BUT trying to fusion them, especially the traditional ones, is not good. Let's start with the STARS... 1 STAR for ambiance because the bakery is beautiful and inviting. 1 STAR for service because the girls are nice. 1 STAR for the cannoli because it was good...the shell was nice & crispy, tasted fresh and the filling was good, on point. Now this is where I believe they are trying to fusion Italian & French TRADITIONAL pastries and it's a NO WAY. The Napoleon tasted so bad I took a bite and just could not take another. I'm not sure if it was old & stale but the pastry was soggy and the cream tasted horrible. The Lobster Tail was edible but very disappointing because it was filled with a cream that was more like a meringue, no flavor but whipped sugar. What a fantastic bakery! Growing up in Queens where it felt like there was a great bakery in every town, you really appreciate it when you find a good NJ bakery. There are definitely a couple around, but I'd put Calandra's near the top of the list. A bakery that makes fresh bread on the hour until 9pm? Wow!! Today I picked up a delicious loaf of Italian bread to have with dinner tonight. I also picked up a pastry for a late snack. The pastry was a chocolate almond horn. We got our wedding cake from Calandra's Bakery. They have so many flavors to choose from, and their cakes are magnificent works of art! We got a four tier cake to feed 250 people. We had such a good time at our tasting, sampling all the different flavor combinations, and enjoying some complimentary coffee. The flavors we chose were vanilla cake with chocolate pudding, chocolate and vanilla cake with Italian custard and strawberries, and chocolate cake with dulce de leche. This has been bothering me snice Thanksgiving and I couldn't hold it in any longer. I've been a customer for many years and have typically never had any problems. Every year for Thanksgiving, I get a Pumpkin Pie and Pecan Pie. My husband picked them up this year as usual , with the girl going into the back and bringing them out already in boxes. We didn't think anything of them until we went to serve them Thanksgiving day. Imagine my shock when I opened the boxes and both pies were burnt. And I mean blacken crusts as well as the tops of the pies. I couldn't even cut them and we certainly couldn't eat them. It was a waste of food and money. The absolute nerve of Calandra's to sell these pies in that condition. This is not the quality that was expected and to say that we were disappointed and angry is an understatement. If this is the quality that Calandra's is offering, I will be buying my baked goods elsewhere. The owners should be ashamed of themselves. They obviously don't care about the quality of their products and I am very disappointed by that. read more
