Server never even came over to ask how it was as she was busy talking to a table the entire time I was there. Oh noooo!! We forgot to take pictures before eating!! We ordered a Chicken burger and fries with one of their huuuuge (and very tasty) milkshakes, and the Greek wrap with butternut squash soup and a side of potato pancakes (this last add on was $3.00). Each meal was about $17.00. I have to admit to avoiding this place beforehand; I won't avoid it any more! The decor is fabulous - all '50s. Everyone gets a booth! All we needed was a jukebox in each one. However, they compensated with something like a Wurlitzer in the corner (modern: it seems to be touch screen) back to the future?! Anyway, they're open 24/7, and serve breakfast any time. The food was good but not fabulous, and the waitress didn't know the soup du jour, or the cost of the side of potato pancakes, but was willing to find out for us. Regarding the visit on the night of 12 Nov 2022. My wife and I live 35 minutes away from Zak's Diner. The last 2 times that we attempted to eat there, we called to make sure they will be open and were then refused service upon arrival. The last time, (when we called) we were told that they were open until 11pm but the kitchen closes at 10pm. We informed them that we'll be there by 9:30. We got into the car and did the 35 minute drive in. We showed up at 9:15 and we were told that they've closed early. We had actually called ahead, we were told they were open, we drove the 35 minutes there only to be refused service on arrival. Being refused service due to closing early has happened both times we tried to eat there. Both time we called ahead, both times we were told they were open. Both times we drove in and both times we came back with nothing. We've decided to never attempt to eat there again. read more

Today's visit was better than the last. Our server was excellent, dealing with our large group without breaking a sweat, and with a smile. Coffees were topped up without having to ask. The pancakes were fluffier than I expected they would be if they were made from a mix. read more

Hey, you! Out there on the road, looking for breakfast. Or just leaving your hotel, unable to face another plastic fork. Or you are new in town, and want someone to cook for you. Put this address in your GPS, and boogie. This restaurant chain has studied breakfast, and the results are very satisfying. Yes, my pictures of my oatmeal across Canada all look the same (according to my Facebook friends) but seriously...steamed milk? And just enough fresh strawberries. Blueberry pancakes large enough to share, and eggs just right. We knew we were in the right place when we saw a table full of men wearing reflective vests, and smelled the coffee, but it just kept getting better. When we walked in "Barracuda" was playing on the sound system, and it set the tone for the whole meal. And the restrooms are marked with signs of Wonder Woman and Superman. And it's located in a strip mall with a beer store AND a liquor store AND an unrefined olive tasting store. This experience makes it hard to leave Canada again. We did pick up a few bottles of Jackson Triggs at the liquor store, and back on the road again. We know where we will stop for breakfast next time we are in Ottawa. And you should, too. read more

Went for weekday breakfast. The place is large, cavernous even, but decorated somewhat like a diner. Service was fast and good. Sadly my first cup of coffee of the day was weak and tepid. Later, I was given a refill and it was hot. The food was as expected, but I really enjoyed the sausages, big and juicy. There's not much you can say about a diner for breakfast. Zac's had it. I have been here a couple times with my kids. Nice decor, decent food, a little pricey but what I didn't like was the attitude and poor service from the servers. We seemed to be annoying them. They seemed to treat their "regulars" better. Maybe they're family or something but making other guests feel second rate isn't a way to gain a following or repeat business. This diner is pretty much designed for those hungover twenty somethings on Saturday mornings. The diner is open 24 hours, has a big menu with huge portions, and even has a bar off to the side. The food is pretty decent, particularly if you like things that taste processed and from a package or mix. I'm not knocking any of those categories, by the way. Goodness knows that my favorite kind of macaroni and cheese is still the kind that comes from a blue box, but I digress. The service has been cheerful, friendly, and efficient on each of my visits. You can order from anywhere on the menu regardless of the time of day, which is great for people with small children who insist that 9 a.m. is the perfect time for chicken nuggets. My only complaint (and the reason that this review isn't an even-keeled three-stars) is about the cleanliness of the dinnerware and eating utensils. This always looked questionable, but in a way that I could overlook as things not rinsing to a perfect sheen in the dishwasher. I love this place, especially for breakfast. While a little on the expensive side, I definitely think it's worth the money you pay. The place has a real 50's diner feel that reminds me of the diner from Pulp Fiction. I recently went there with my grandmother who loved all the fun little signs they have everywhere, such as one that said "No dancing on the tables". Food wise, I would definitely recommend the Banana Bread French Toast. I'm a big French toast fan and I thought that was definitely something new and out of the box. We ordered 2 cookie dough cheesecakes, and 2 milkshakes (chocolate and a mocha). The service initially was pretty good, but quickly became worse as more servers came to the front. The server became rather distant and carefree. The cheesecake was made visibly wrapped in plastic wrap (eew) and then served to us. It was BURNT on a whole side, and the cake itself was clearly stale from its texture. I did not taste any cheese, nor did I taste cookie dough (It tasted like peanut butter? The server didn't even ask if we had allergies, WHAT IF I WAS ALLERGIC?!) The milkshake I had (mocha) tasted very much of artificial chocolate, and was not cold when it was served. The glass it came in was warm to the touch so I figured it must have just come out of the wash, making my milkshake warm. Great. At the end of our trip to Zac's, we payed the bill and only received two gumballs for the three of us. We kindly asked for a third so we could each have one, my friend also asked for her milkshake to-go. When the server came back, he brought us two cups and said his good-byes. Great listener. I don't plan to go to this restaurant with it's apparently "famous" milkshakes again. Maybe I'll go to the downtown one or Johnny's Diner instead. read more

When you wait in line for seating on the weekend, notice the pancakes on the plates of the seated patrons. You will see that an abnormal amount of people have one or more leftover pancakes on their plates. Also notice the lack of request for a doggy bag. Somehow they made the pancakes fluffy but not moist. The pancakes are extremely dry. Even with blueberries and maple syrup, you'll cough if you slightly inhale while chewing. Have a glass of water on standby because when you do cough, a cloud of dust will linger near. Zak's, I'm not afraid to say that you're all hype. I waited in line for an expensive meal that is easily surpassed in the texture department by $3 McDonald's hotcakes. This Zak's location is a spankin' new replica of the downtown location in the Byward market. If you've been to the other one before, this Kanata location is a bit off putting because the 'diner' feel is sort of lost between the big screen TVs and shiny, new decorations. The quality of food is the same as the other location - Average but satisfying. Similarly, you can expect a wide variety on the menu and benefit from all-day breakfast... Probably the only place that serves breakfast all day in this area of Ottawa. Other than that, I'd say that Zak's is quite pricey overall, especially for breakfast ($12-20) even for the basic options. read more

Went a bit early on a Sunday morning and thankfully so. The décor is nice, not in your face 50's but we found it fun. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. I ordered the Eggs Florentine and my son ordered the Piggies in a Blanket. So much food, he has great take home food for later. The hollandaise was home made and quite tasty, the eggs were done to perfection. My son loved the crepe wrapped sausages, very good. I enjoy their breakfast poutine and California scramble, but when I have tried other meals such as the nachos or breakfast burrito I wasn't a fan.
