    Veggie crêpe
    Valerie D.

Not a bad little bakery. Lots of pastries, lots of cookie options imported from France. We stopped in before the new 28-day province wide lockdown and enjoyed one of their savoury crêpes in house. I lived in (Lower) Normandy for 3 years and visited Bretagne (Brittany) on several different occasions, the crêpes are not Brittany style crêpes, made with buckwheat, but they're alright. My boyfriend and I spilt a veggie crêpe. We also had the namesake, a small Kouign-Amann. My boyfriend had never had one before. I was raving to him about my experience in France about this delicious cake, essentially make with copious amounts of butter, sugar, and flour...I was telling him that it tastes like a butter cookie but in cake form, he was in for a treat. Needless to say, we were so disappointed when the Kouign-Amann that we got was stale and tasteless, likely day old. It was not what I expected from a place called "The House of Kouign-Amann". They have lots of frozen food as well. My boyfriend suggested we buy a quiche but I found that they exorbitantly priced, many over $25, closer to $30! I understand that they're made fresh in a bakery, but they're also frozen so that people can take them home. They are not fresh to eat. You can find cheaper (freshly made) frozen quiche in other Ottawa bakeries that are very good. We passed on these... We did decide to patronize this establishment again on Christmas Eve to purchase Kouign-Amann again. Thankfully, this time it was fresh and it tasted amazing, like butter with a hint of sweetness, as it should. I would recommend La Maison du Kouign-Amann, just be aware that when you go there that you're prepared to spend a lot of money. Also, be sure to ask if the Kouign-Amann is fresh before purchasing!

5 Kouign Amann for $10 (or if you buy less than 5 it's $2.75 each)

I first had Kouign Amann in Montreal at a bakery called "Au Kouign-Amann" on Mont Royal East and fell in love with this pastry that I can only describe as a cross between a croissant and a cake. Ever since then, I've been on a hunt for Kouign Amann in Ottawa. I found this place on Yelp and bookmarked it. Since it's out in Kanata North, I wasn't sure when I'd get around to going there, but today was the day! This is not a place that is easy to stumble upon. I think you have to make a deliberate effort to find it. It is in an industrial part of town and not even on a major street. Good thing Google Maps led me to the right place, lol. The bakery is super cute. They have 3 seats facing the window in case you want to eat in. They have croissants, other pastries, tarts, cakes, and macarons, in addition to Kouign Amann. Kouign Amann are $2.75 each or 5 for $10. Obviously, I got a box of 5, haha. I just got them plain, but you can get toppings for $0.25 each. The Kouign Amann were delicious. So many flaky soft layers. Sweet and sticky goodness. I think toppings would make it too sweet for my tastes, so I'm glad I didn't get any. Staff were nice and the bakery looked clean. Prices are reasonable. There's free parking available in the lot that they share with other businesses. Don't know how often I'll make the trek out there, but this bakery seems like a gem to me.

Since this bakery opened and it's our go to place for desserts and nice cakes to impress our guests! Today we were wvit's to try their new crepe addition and sit in their new expansion. Although it's only a week in, but their crepe menu is so versatile wether ur looking for salty crepe or a sweet one. I ordered the green plate which was pesto sauce with veggies and was very good and couldn't eat all day! Very filling. My kids got Nutella crepe with fruits and loved it!

Kanata is hiding a gem of a pastry shop in their neck of the woods. This family-run establishment gets me salivating with their tarts and pastries. Their namesake is delicious. I've had it at other shops, but theirs is the winner. The kouign amann is dense like a bread pudding, but flakey. The combination is amazing! If you want to sweeten up the plain ones, ask them to add toppings. They are still delicious without though. My personal favourite is the nutella or salted caramel, but they also have lemon and raspberry. They do have other pastries such as croissants, savoury pies, fruit tarts and cakes. The chocolatines are particularly delicious coated with chocolate bits and toasted almonds. There isn't seating so be sure to grab your treats to enjoy at home. While some items can be a little more pricey than others, the fancy schmancy is justified for a bit of a treat or special occasion.

Ok people, whose insanely bad idea was it to put this hidden gem right beside the gym I work out at? Oooohhh my gawwwddddd! Their tagline is genuine French pastry which, whether you've been to France or not, is exactly true. It's just layers of buttery flakiness, topped with cream and chocolate and fruit and all other goodness from the Garden of Eden. Impressive bites to eat in or take to a dinner party when you're tasked to bring dessert! Honestly, my only complaint would be the coffee. It's...meh.... but it certainly doesn't stop me from going back... Overall, a quaint little must check out in the heart of high tech Kanata!

THIS IS THE ONLY BAKERY YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE. Everything is fresh and tastes amazing. The pastries are quite rich but if you're looking to take your in laws or a date out for breakfast or for something short and sweet... this is definitely the place! We had the kouign-amann topped with salted caramel, one plain and one with lemon topping. The pistachio croissant is good for someone who doesn't like something too sweet. It gives a nice nutty flavour. The almond croissant is by far my favourite from all bakeries I've tried. This one is savoury and definitely can taste the almonds, again, a pretty rich pastry. The chocolate croissant isn't too sweet. It does have a more chalkier taste unlike the rest which were more smooth and creamy. But, not bad at all. CROQUE MONSIEUR WAS AMAZING. It really hit the spot. Cheesy with ham and pressed so it's nice and warm! Delicious! The espresso here is smooth, not bitter like Starbucks. Service here is 10/10. The staff were patient when we were all over the place with how many of each items we want even though there was a long line. I understand it can be frustrating for them as they probably would like to clear the line but they showed no sign of wanting to rush us and were very happy to help. Edit: tried the crepe, it's mediocre. Can definitely get better elsewhere. But everything is delicious!!!!

Maybe my expectations were a bit high but I found it only average. Nothing wrong with it really, but not worth a special trip of you aren't already out that way. Owners were there and quite friendly but it was pricey and fairly standard.

This spot just opened up on Friday and had already gained a foothold in the hearts and bellies of Kanata-ites. Stopped in for the first time today, the aroma of fresh french pastries and breads is intoxicating. The croissants are light as air, crispy and delicious. Their signature pastry (the kouign-amann) is about the size of a muffin, made with pastry with an option of lemon, raspberry or salted caramel sauce. While it is heavy for the size, the taste ia not heavy at all. Buttery, flaky deliciousness. I am so happy that I work cloae to this place as I know I will be stopping in often.

There's also a small public square with some benches outside that will absolutely be useful for busy summer nights. My recommendation is to grab an ice cream sandwich bar from one of the freezers where you line up to order - great textures, fresh flavours, and lots of fun. Easy to split with a loved one! Prices are a bit high, but Moo Shu sources local ingredients (with the names of local farms on the flavour signs!), and pays employees a livable wage. It's a great place to stop by and support, while trying a delicious new flavour. Their new location is absolutely a step up :)

I showed up around 9:00 on a random Tuesday and the place was impressively packed. The line was snaking out the door but it moved quickly. I've always been a huge fan of French Onion Soup, so when I saw a flavor called French Onion Scoop, I obviously had to get it. It's not good. The quality of the ice cream itself is top-notch (i.e. it's super creamy) but the flavor is just kind of gross. Plus there's a lot of sautéed onion in there and I think there's a reason onion and ice cream have never been combined before. I ate some of my cup but wound up throwing most of it away. To paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, Moo Shu was so preoccupied with whether or not they could make a French Onion Soup inspired ice cream flavor, they didn't stop to think if they should. (I should note I also tried a couple bites of their DunkaMoo's ice cream sandwich and it was really delicious, so obviously they are capable of making an excellent product.)

I was in the mood for a Sfogliatella (lobster tail pastry), so my husband and I went to Little Italy to get one. Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana has been around since 1979, but I had never been there before. They had a large selection of desserts and gelato. We took our pastry to-go, but they have some seating both indoors and on their raised front patio and street-level side patio. The Sfogliatella was $7.49 which is the most I've ever paid for this pastry. Fortunately, it was delicious. Very crispy and flakey on the outside and softer on the inside with a generous amount of cream. I prefer the ricotta cheese filling slightly more, but I like the cream filling too. It was light and airy and not too sweet. Service was efficient and pleasant. The shop has a one way flow, you enter one door and you follow the arrows and exit a different door. The area to wait for service is narrow, so this process prevents congestion and crowding. I like it. Great for the occasional treat, but a bit too spendy for me. (77)
