Le moulin de provence has so many items on display it can be a bit overwhelming. The shop is large, they have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and the service was fast. I ordered the "obama cookie" which is a shortbread cookie shaped like a maple leaf. The cookie was crumbly and not too sweet, but I was disappointed because the cookie was broken by the time I got it from the cashier.

TLDR: touristy bakery/cafe in the Byward Market. Baked goods range from ok to excellent. Haven't had anything terrible there. This is a very popular place in the Byward Market, mostly with tourists, but locals such as myself pop in once in a while too. This place was made famous by former USA President Barack Obama. When he was president he visited this place and bought some cookies. After his visit, they renamed those cookies he bought "Obama cookies" and Obama fans have been coming to try those cookies ever since, lol. They are shortbread cookies with icing on top. I don't like shortbread cookies, so I've never tried them. They are in the actual Byward Market Square building and the decor is quite pretty. It's a nice place to grab a pastry or even lunch. Their items are on the pricey side, but that's to be expected given they are in a touristy area. I've had many items from them over the last decade plus, and I'd say items range from ok to excellent. Their cheese bread sticks were a bit dry and lacking in cheese, but their danishes and cakes were tasty. Service varies from neutral to good. Metered street parking or paid parkade parking. (34)

We have been visiting this spot for years. Always consistently good. Something for everyone, any time through the day. Nice place to sit and watch the folks walk by the market. And pleasant service. A must visit in Ottawa.

They have a MASSIVE selection of baked goods, cakes and pastries! We ordered several items to share between 4 and had leftovers! They are a little on the heavier side, unlike asian inspired dessert! They portions are also very big per piece. We definitely over ordered, but was great to try a variety of treats while we're there. They're a little sweet for me but goes well with a black coffee!

average (a bit pricy) breakfast my husband and I were making a quick stop in Ottawa. so we decided to visit Parliament Hill and also the Byward market. as tourists ourselves, we decided to visit this tourist spot. this place was most famous for its Obama cookies, which we did not order. we had not had breakfast yet, so we ordered the breakfast combo. i found it a bit pricy, around 15 per breakfast. the portion was small. the taste was average. I would not recommend breakfast here, McDonalds breakfast would probably have better value. maybe just visit here for the cookies and desserts as tourists.

Sometimes touristy places are good and this is one of those times. They are strangely famous because Obama once ate a cookie there, had to be about a decade ago, but they are still talking about it. Anyway, the cookies are good. A standard shortbread style but my son loved it because it had a Mario design. I got the German Strudel which was good and had a bite of the Black Forest danish I got for my wife which was really good. No complaints, I'd go back.

Small little corner shop for grab and go. Have anything a bakery have ranging from sandwich, bagel, cookies, cakes, cupcakes, quiche and more. I took a ham and cheese sandwich warmed in panini. Was good but maybe a bit bland since I didn't taste anything like mustard, mayo or other condiment. But overall was good, would retake for a quick light snack. There is a different cashier for different section so you enter and walk to the counter offering what you want, following the arrows and you pay at each of them.

Baguette sandwich, croissants, cinnamon pastries. The options were endless. We managed to grab a seat (with our wheelchair) and sat comfortably.

This bakery was my favorite part of the Byward Market. With plenty of street parking available, this was a perfect place for a quick and delicious breakfast. Ordered some croissant sandwiches and macaroons, with cappuccino on a cold December morning. This bakery completely satisfied by cravings! And strangely I learned Obama once ate cookie there-we thought that was pretty funny. Service was good, the market is slow in a winter, so not many people in a bakery either. Ambience is casual.

We went here because it's one of those places that's recommended on the tourist blogs and such, but honestly, it wasn't worth it. We ordered 4 things: - croissant : just ok and didn't taste too fresh. Was also made with margarine instead of butter, so it had more of a bready texture and taste than a classic croissant. - mini pepperoni pizza: also just ok. The pizza sauce was obviously not homemade, and they didn't heat it up before serving. - fruit Danish: This was probably the best thing, in my opinion. The pastry was soft and chewy, and the fruits were fresh. The custard in the middle was pretty thick, so I tried to spread it out across the entire pastry, but overall, this was tasty, and the only thing I would probably get again if I went back - obama cookie: they kind of really played this up, and it made the establishment look tacky and dated. The cookie itself was just meh. Your typical shortbread cookie. Thick and dry and mildly sweet. You can get something similar in any grocery store, though to be fair, it won't have the Canadian maple leaf on it, so there's that!

The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

Prepare to be amazed............... We had heard about his place for months and how awesome it was so we finally decided to try it out. When we got there at mid-day on a Saturday there was a line up out the door. My wife suggested we go for a walk to let the line thin out a but. We got back and the line had thinned out so we went in. They have a set number of sandwiches and you can also make your own, but we decided to try their set sandwiches. I got the Parkdale and the Holland, my wife got the Bayswater, and we picked up a Scott for my daughter. When we got home, we were nothing short of blown away. The quality of the sandwich was amazing - the bread was light and fluffy, a ton of meat, fresh veggies, great sauces, just incredible quality. More importantly, fantastic value for money. Even more importantly, the staff were wonderful - they chatted with us but kept the line moving - super professional and friendly. The quality of the sandwiches here rivals Old Tyme - no word of a lie. The bread they use is very very close to what we had in Lafayette and the quality of the fillings is outstanding. Don't walk, run to this place. It will change your life for what you think about sandwiches.

This sandwich is literally the reason I downloaded this app…read more I've just spent the whole winter in Quebec and am now hitchhiking across Canada and decided to stay in Ottawa a few days. I booked 4 nights at the Saintlo jail hostel and when I came downstairs after a rejuvenating nap I saw that they had a list of recommendations sitting amongst a pile of other plastic sheets. Dirienzo's - the best ITALIAN SANDWICH in the city. I'm not really an Italian sandwich sort of person normally, maybe it was contributed by the burgeoning like for cured meats that I was acquiring after eating dried salami as my only source of food for the past week or so -- but who's going to pass up the chance to try the BEST of anything? I got there after taking 2 buses and was starting to become a bit concerned. I had $40 in my account and was hitchhiking across the country -- after all it was labelled the BEST in the city and that would normally come with a hefty price tag. When I first opened the door I instantly got greeted by the guy behind the counter, which made me feel welcomed and at ease. I looked up to view the selection of sandwiches that they had on offer and potentially the cheaper ones. I was surprised to see the sign that said $10 for ANY SANDWICH!! #booyah I was finding it hard to decide on which of the sandwiches to get since they all looked so appetising, but decided on number 16. The sandwich was massive for the price that it was. The bread was a perfect mix between durable so that it wouldn't fall apart in your hands, but soft enough that it was enjoyable, with the amount of bread contemplating he rest of the fillings just the right amount. I was pretty overwhelmed to be honest with how good it was. All of the ingredients including the lettuce (which I've found is usually the first thing places will skimp out on) were extremely fresh. I put in my coworker groupchat: "Anyone coming over across Canada after the season has to make a stop in Ottawa if they aren't already just to try one of these." Accompanied by a photo of my eyes watering with glee. My Nonna is always telling me how I need to learn Italian to be more connected to our culture and I've always just kindof brushed it off since I haven't needed to use it and we don't speak it much at home, but this has made me so proud to be Italian. As I continued to eat the sandwich sitting on a bench looking towards the city and the people playing basketball in the park, I found myself contemplating staying in Canada and raising my kids here in Ottawa so that they get to experience it themselves on a warm summer afternoon after picking them up from school. The eggs could have used some seasoning even with salsa it needed something extra A Vegan Breakfast Bowl ($14) - a mixture of tofu, spinach, mushrooms and tomato chutney - which somehow tasted to all 4 of us like onion chutney. The vegetables done good, but tofu again had just no flavour. Tofu had a spice rub all over, but it tasted like plain tofu. The Bacun strips were rice paper rolls with some attempted flavours but none came through. And two Vegan Bennies ($16) - a super grainy slice of bread topped with the same tofu, green onions, Bacun and some red pepper strips (NOT Coulis as described in the menu). If some person was having a tofu dish for the first time I think they would describe tofu as no flavour at all. We vegans know that you can do amazing things with Tofu. The home fries in the above dishes was the best - now that we could give 5 out 5. All of us had to go and get Sriracha and Ketchup from the counter to rescue the dishes. Coffee was too weak as well. When you go in and order on the counter and you get food delivered to your table. Should the restaurant still offer to tip on the machine BEFORE even we were served? The order did take a long time, the table not clean when we sat, no condiments on the table and coffee refills slow. An extra star for giving tons of vegan options
