I've had a few items from The Cake Shop, ranging from their cakes, muffins, shortbread cookies and gingerbread cookies. Let's just say, you can't eat items here and be on a diet, lol. The cakes and muffins are moist and tasty, but on the oily/greasy side and very sweet. The cookies are also tasty, but very rich and full of butter, and also very sweet. I know that "real baking" is full of sugar and fat, and this is how most people like it, but I personally prefer reduced-fat and reduced-sugar baking, lol. That being said, I can still appreciate full-fat and full-sugar baked goods, haha. They are a nut-free bakery, so if you are allergic to nuts, you need not worry about eating items here. And their (nut-free) carrot cake is really good! If I recall correctly, they put pineapple in it, yum! I didn't even miss the walnuts. The bakery is pretty and they have lots of ready to go cakes so you can pick one up last minute if you have to. Obviously you can also pre-order if you want something specific, but they do have a good selection of readymade cakes. Staff are friendly. Street parking only. read more

We used to get 4-5 sugar-free cakes a year for parents' birthdays, anniversaries, Father's Day, and even Mother's day since dad is diabetic and loved cakes and often has several slices if he can. I have not shopped there again after an incident a few years ago where I called ahead to reserve a sugar free cake and found when i got home that the cake had moldy berries on it and touch the cake too so it likely was in the display case for 1-2 days. Mom insisted that she did not want any of us eating a cake with mold on it, so an expensive cake was discarded. When I called, they said they had at the time an outside baker that came in once a week to bake the sugar-free cakes, and they freeze it. If a cake is past its best, they should have defrosted another cake since they were selling a supposedly premium product. Customer service by I think the owner's mother or a co-owner was terrible. She offered us a bag of cookies that l seen in the store before and looked kind of stale and remember we have a diabetic in the family! With that experience, we have been getting our cakes elsewhere, either sugar free or regular cakes but smaller ones, so dad would eat a maximum of 2 slices lol read more

I have seen some of the reviews and I must say I was shocked. I have bought several cakes from the cake shop and they have all been excellent (especially the Black Magic). The staff (including the owner) have always been pleasant and professional. 5 stars from this customer and I continue to recommend the business to many people and I haven't heard one complaint! read more

$150 Deep and Delicious knock off! We ordered a vanilla and strawberry jam cake. We got cheap vanilla with pink frosting. Who puts a ribbon around a cake, then frosting decoration on top of that ribbon? All that pretty work for nothing whev we tried to cut it. Disappointing to say the least. No one wanted seconds and for a good reason. read more

I ordered a Black Forest Cake for a birthday celebration. It was a big hit and tasted delicious. The shop had muffins, cookies, cakes and other tasty treats to choose from. The owners were responsive to my order and the customer service they provided was great. I will definitely use The Cake Shop again. read more

I've previously ordered a lemon cake through Givopoly Ottawa and my recipients have been delighted. So I thought I'd try them for myself this time, for my daughter's birthday. I really appreciate that they are nut-free (hallelujah! nut-free bakeries in the US are rare!) and the many nut-free signs posted in the store demonstrated that they take this allergy seriously. I ordered a Hello Kitty sheet cake (1/2 slab, $55) with pretty simple instructions, some pink icing, Hello Kitty character, chocolate cake. The ordering process was very easy online, and then Nadine called on the phone to confirm my order. The cake was ready at the specified time and looked fantastic! They used a sugar sheet to transfer the image onto the cake. It was very impressive-looking. Considering the fact that it feeds 25 people, I thought it was a reasonable price for the cake. Everyone enjoyed the cake, although in my humble opinion I didn't get as much chocolate flavor as I expected, but I did like that the buttercream icing wasn't overly sweet. Thanks, Cake Shop, for making a special occasion memorable! read more

The cakes were really, really well designed. Like, it most definitely takes above average talent to make that poutine cake. In fact, we were thinking of getting it for our friend who loves poutine but is now on a diet, but then we realized that cake is just as bad as poutine when you're on a diet. They were really expensive, but I guess understandable. The flavour was pretty sub-par though. While they looked nice, the cake we tried(the rainbow one, by the slice) tasted identical to the slab cake you buy at Loblaws. Also, the service was slow. They served 3 people who came in after us before us. A slice of cake was also pretty pricey at 6$. read more

The quickest way to find yourself pulled into a bakery is by walking by with a small child. I can't put all the blame on my kid. One, I like cake, too! Two, the ones on display were very cute. I also like cute things. Combined, it was like a sign to waltz in and get a little something to accompany my medium double-double. The decision of which cupcake flavor to buy was solved by the fact that they don't sell them individually. Each six pack contained two of each: vanilla, chocolate and red velvet. The price was a bit daunting : $14 per half dozen. It isn't so bad if you realize that the average price for a cupcake at Superstore is about $2 or $2.50 apiece. I had a red velvet cupcake. The buttercream frosting was sugary and smooth (I don't know if the latter was because it happened to be a hot day and it took us awhile to get home). In contrast, the cake was lightly sweetened in a perfect contrast to the frosting. The cake portion was also nicely moist. Overall, a good treat for people who don't like to aim for sugar shock when they have dessert. It's also a good treat for people with nut allergies, as all goods in the store are nut-free. read more

I purchased a kit kat cake last August for my dad's 60th birthday from the Cake Shop. I always walk by this store and was excited that I finally had a reason to spend $50 on a cake! I called ahead of the party to see what kind of cakes they had in store. They had a kit kat cake which sounded great so I asked them to put one aside for me. I went to pick up the cake and followed the special directions. I was so disappointed when I tried the cake an hour after buying it. The cake had 2 pieces of kit kat on the top and the rest just tasted like a slightly stall chocolate cake from a box. We also had a Farmboy strawberry cake at the party and it was 10x better. I would not purchase from here again. read more

They were so rude on the phone, then the birthday cake I received has animal hairs, and dirty stuff on it. This cost me $50

Do not make the mistake of getting a cake here! One step away from styrofoam in terms of flavour, these cakes must be made with the cheapest ingredients possible. Be warned! Total waste of money - I will not be able to eat my birthday cake, it's that lousy. In fact, I couldn't even finish my one small slice. How utterly and completely disappointing. Did they think that we wouldn't know the difference between a quality cake and a cheap knockoff? What is this, cakes just for show? Again, I repeat: do not buy your cake here. Anywhere else has to be better than this. Ugh. read more

Quite disappointing. I ordered a red velvet cake for a birthday, unfortunately what we got was a cake dyed red, with regular icing sugar...NOT a red velvet cake. It did not taste any better than a generic cake picked up in a grocery store. It doesn't seem that any cream cheese was used, which is kinda the whole idea of a red velvet. Not sure what their other products are like, but sadly based on this experience I will not go back. read more

It was a while ago, but I can still taste the zesty lemon cake that we got from the Cake Shop! Love the interior - Andrea B - you should do an event here! Could use some improvements in your customer service attention. I've had the caramel cheesecake (delicious!) and the red velvet...(meh!), the cakes are just fine, beautiful decorations, the shop is really cute and love that they have extra parking at the back since parking in wellington village is always a hassle. BUT their customer service is not good at all, everytime I'm there I leave feeling very unconfortable, denigrated and mistreated. I've tried inquiring about their products and services (their flavours, icing types, birthday cakes...) and the lady always has a sour face, very uninterested in helping, almost pushing me out of the store. This type of attitude really makes me feel llike not coming back. Hope they get a better clerk that matches their inviting shop. read more

The story of my search for a very special cake to mark a very special birthday ended at The Cake Shop, and I was not let down by its top notch service - not to mention the artist's attention to detail to recreate the vision I had of the end product. I had ordered a custom design cake (fondant), 2 layers with some intricate icing work and 2 flavors. The simplified process went like this: I had emailed my idea to Nadine, one of the owners of the shop, 2 weeks in advance with a detailed description of how I wanted the cake to be designed and the flavors. We met in person to finalize details which took about 10-15min. The more detailed the instructions, the less unpleasant surprises there will be in the end product, in my opinion. Sometimes our visions don't quite work in terms of an edible design, so that's where Nadine's expertise comes in with providing alternatives to the design/layout of the cake. For anything custom designed, I suggest a 2 week window from ordering to pickup. There were a few differences between the design I had provided (ie. butterflies instead of dragonflies), minor changes to the over cake, but the arrangement still worked beautifully with the final design - I was still very pleased with the aesthetics, color and finish! Most of the decor had to be designed in advance for the icing to set, so yes, edible, but no would not suggest eating it! The cake itself had to be anchored by skewers and the "lid" on the top cake was another slice of cake...so almost 3 cakes in total to make the entire design. A hefty design weighing a decent 10-15lbs at least! The top layer was a 6" lemon cake with raspberry filling. The bottom cake was a 10" marble cake with coffee cream filling. There were four options for cake flavor as per website: vanilla, chocolate, marble and red velvet. The fillings were also in abundant...can't recall them off the top of my head, but enough selection to create a good taste combination for any cake flavor. The marble cake was more moist than the lemon cake, which was similar to a pound cake in density. I think for the cake to structurally work and hold shape, the cake has to be a bit denser. It is not like the moist, fluffy cake you would get in the grocery store...those would fall or flake before getting the cake back home. Overall, the cake struck a delicate balance between aesthetics and taste and definitely carried a wow factor. The cake has approx 30 servings, so plenty for a family get together, to share...and then some! While shopping around for custom cakes (having emailed about 5 stores/online bakeries in total) The Cake Shop was the most responsive and helpful out of the bunch. A big thanks to Nadine again for putting together this visual and delectable masterpiece :) read more

Unfortunately very poor service. I called and the person on the other line kept on cutting me off and kept on repeating that she was short staffed. She also sent me a rude email afterwards. She didn't even listen to what I had to say and kept on influencing my answers. I wanted to send her a picture of what I wanted as a custom cake and the logo of the company but she refused. Overall I cannot recommend this place at all. read more

Rude and insufferable staff! I was next in line waiting for the person working behind the counter to complete her transaction with a customer who was ordering a cake. While I was waiting, my friend had entered into the shop and was looking for me. I was about to vocally let her know I was at the counter and just about to speak then stopped realizing she was too far for me to do so. All of a sudden, the staff member turned to me and said with a curt, condescending tone "I will be with you as soon as I am finished here", then she turned to the customer, shook her head in disapproval and said loudly under her breath "some people". That is obnoxious! You misinterpreted something then had the audacity to vocalize your thoughts to my face. I was humiliated. embarrassed, and disgusted. I just moved to Ottawa and Hintonburg and you were the first experience I encountered in the neighbourhood. Not very welcoming. You lost out on a potentially loyal customer. Keep your thoughts to yourself and be kind to your customers as they ARE your livelihood! read more

Just bought grenache marble cake and 6 pack of cupcakes for 14yo birthday dinner. Thankfully we only had 4 friends over because I was embarrassed about this dessert. The icing on the cake tastes like wax...no joke. The cupcakes from grocery stores are 99% better. Seriously. read more

I ordered a sleeping beauty cake for my daughter 's birthday and was very happy. Ordering by phone was quick and easy. Pick up was just as easy, service was friendly. The cake was a good size, I got more slices out than the website anticipated (is a tall cake so thin slices worked well). The cake looked identical to the website picture. It was delicious, the kids loved it, it was nut free so worked for the venue and my daughter was mesmerized by this princess cake. I thought the price was reasonable for such a hand made cake. All in all, a very positive experience! read more

Horrendous cupcakes. My work ordered cupcakes for pride week. The icing was supposedly buttercream, but the texture indicated it was made with margarine, or just overbeat. The purple and blue cupcakes tasted like chemicals, green and yellow tasted like NOTHING, red and orange were tolerable but extremely sweet. The cake itself was dry, bland, and I'm sure was from a box. Do not waste your money. read more

Overpriced and subpar quality. Ordered a strawberry shortcake birthday cake. 2pm pickup. Cake was ready on time. But slabs of the actual cake tasted stale as if they were baked a week ago. My co-worker and I often drop in for a cupcake treat. The Cake shop does sell individual cupcakes of the fancy sort. They vary their flavours often. You can also buy a 6 pack of cupcakes for $10, which are a bit smaller and geared towards children with plastic decorations on top of the icing. I believe they are a nut free bakery. They also have a good selection of gluten free fancy cupcakes and cakes, and some cakes that are egg, milk and nut free. Aside from the cupcakes they do sell all sorts of other goodies, like cookies and ice cream and have a little cafe at the front of the store. read more

Called this cake shop this morning to order a cake for this Saturday, today is Wednesday (thought this would be sufficient time). I was told by this accented women (did not catch her name) that "oh no, no I could not make this cake by Saturday".. it was not really a complicated cake (not by my standards anyways). I was told to check out the occasion cakes on her website and that she would have to let me go because she had customers waiting for her. She said to call back when I had made my choice of cake... well you know what, NOPE not going to call back and in fact, I am letting everyone I know how unprofessional this person was. Do not care if her cakes are the best, but customer service is always first and foremost. I see that she had reopened recently, apparently this person should have had some lessons in manners during her reno time. read more
