This review is solely based on the cakes themselves. A couple of friends of mine drove all the way to this bakery to pick up these two special cakes for my birthday so I haven't personally been there to experience the service or ambiance. The cakes were DELICIOUS and honestly too pretty to eat. Worth the price in my opinion. The cakes were so moist. The chocolate cake had multiple thin layers and the strawberry had fresh strawberries all throughout the middle and outer edge.

They are the kindest people ever in here!! I walked in looking for a cake and I was overhwelmed with my choices. So what they did was come from behind the counter to help me. One of the people explained every cake they had, she was so sweet and kind and tried to speak in the best English. So sweet, everyone else was speaking in French and my working vocabulary is still limited (working on it!!)! So I got a chocolate caramel cake that was just out of this world, my husband claimed it was the best cake he has ever had! So I would say we have a winner!! I will be returning for more! They also had some frezer croissants and take home products that were incredible as well.

Elegant bakery: the cakes were so beautiful, but we were there for the croissant; best in Ottawa/Gatineau!

Really delicious and beautifully cakes. Bought a bunch of smaller cakes, pastries and a large passion fruit cake. The pastries were ok and a bit on the denser side. The smaller desserts were delicious. The large passion fruit cake was a bit on the sour side.

I think everything I have had here has been excellent: fluffy apple turnovers and croissants, crunchy but chewy breads, not too sweet and really fresh cakes, and the best éclairs and millefeuilles in the national capital region. They do everything pastry and bread well! I heard they have lunch sandwiches which I haven't tried yet.

Oh Gatineau, Ottawa's Frenchy neighbor and home of awesome french inspired items. Where no matter what you look like, they automatically speak French assuming you understand. We came to Fidelice for some tarts and croissants at the recommendation of my cousin who says their pastries are delectable. We ordered the almond croissants, chocolate croissants, and an assortment of tarts to bring back to my grandparents home in Nepean and needless to say they were a hit! My favorite was their almond croissants which is filled with this gooey custard like filling and it was sooooo good. I could literally have eaten 10 of them. They had a wonderful assortment of pastries, super cute boxes, meats, jellys, spreads, and pate in the shape of animals!! I loved everything about this little shop and will definitely be back!

Got a birthday cake from here (strawberries and cream) and it rocked. Totally got the bill and was huge portion size for a professional cake at $50. Cake was ready when specified. I put the order in a week before online. Only one hiccup - I requested pickup on Saint Joseph but I received an email saying to pick it up in Alymer. However, staff was very prompt at figuring out the cake was indeed at the Saint Joseph location and gave me a complementary pastry for my trouble. I would use them again for birthday cake needs - might have to swing by for another pastry sometime as well.

I got 2 Portuguese egg tarts (Pasteis de Nata) $2.50 each, 2 cannoli $3.50 each and a cream filled horn pastry $3.50. I didn't like that none of the items had prices listed anywhere, so I had to ask how much everything was. The egg tarts were not fresh, as the pastry was all soft and chewy. The filling was sweet, rich and smooth though. I love Portuguese egg tarts for their flakey pastry with that crispiness to them when they are fresh, and I did not get that here. The cannoli fortunately were not soft nor soggy, but rather crunchy, despite being prefilled. The shell was a bit too dense and oily tasting for liking though. However, the filling was tasty. The cream horn was filled with a smooth custard, which I enjoyed, but I didn't really like the dry crumbly pastry. Overall, I enjoyed the fillings of the items I bought, but not the pastry. Service was neutral. I don't think they take credit cards because when I went to pay by credit, the man asked me if I had debit instead. The bakery is co-located with Syrian Kitchen. I saw some falafels and rice on display, as well as various dips and spreads in the fridge. No parking lot. Street parking only.

Now also known as SYRIAN KITCHEN (says on their new business cards)…read more Based on what I have overheard and read, this place is now owned and operated by Syrian families, employing some recent refugees. They have retained the Portuguese name and products from working with the previous co-owner. This is currently the only place you can get Syrian falafel in town. They gave me and my partner each a sample falafel to try - the falafels were flavourful, crispy on the outside and moist inside. I liked it much better than a lot of other falafels in town!!! $0.65 each if you were to buy. Looks like they are made to order, or the pre-made ones are within the hour and fresh. We tried the Syrian falafel wrap ($6) and Beef steak sandwich ($7) and both were delicious. Don't expect the food to come super fast like other shawarma-type places because they don't have an assembly line. For the beef steak sandwich, they sauteed mushrooms and onions along with the beef on their grill until caramelized, which took a while, but it tasted so homey and fresh. Beef was a little tough but the flavour was good. We got a bunch of natas (Portuguese egg tarts) and they were really good. $1.75 each. We also got a bunch of kibbehs (beef croquettes) - which I have just reheated and am eating right now on Day #2 - and they are flavourful and still juicy inside even after reheating. 5/5 would buy again. And of course we got extra Syrian falafels to go....because they're so good and we eat them like cookies (except healthier...I think). Lovely people, homey food at very reasonable prices. Cannot wait to come back again.

This place has a huge following. Maybe I have always just gotten the wrong items at the wrong times…read morebecause I am not as enamoured of this place as the vast majority of people seem to be. My first visit was many moons ago, when French macarons were just becoming popular in North America. I had had macarons for the first time at a bakery in Toronto called Nadege and I will forever compare all macarons to the ones I had there, lol. At the time, I did not know of any place in Ottawa that sold them, then some time later, I had heard that The French Baker had them, so I was so excited to try them. I was so disappointed though. They were hard and tasted stale to me. That put me off trying anything else there for years. However, I believe in second chances and even third chances. Unfortunately, I can't say that any of the subsequent items I've had there blew me away. Their cupcakes are tiny and drier than I like. Their palmiers are rich and buttery though, but also tiny, lol. Good for portion control, I suppose ;) People love this place, so maybe you will too. As for me, I would eat it if someone bought me some food from this bakery, but it's unlikely I would return and buy something for myself there. It's in the Byward Market, so like most places there, street parking only.
